Abstract:We establish quantitative lower bounds for the number of primes $p$ such that, for an odd integer $b$, $p - b \leq N$ and $p - b = 2^{k(N) + m} P_k \quad \text{for some } m \geq 0$, where $P_k$ is a product of at most $k$ primes other than 2, for $k \geq 2$. These results hold under various upper bounds for $2^{k(N)}$ depending on $k $, specifically when $2^{k(N)} \leq N^a$ for different values of $a$. Our approach combines techniques from Chen's theorem, weighted sieves, and Selberg's lower bound sieve, as well as results on primes in arithmetic progressions with large power factor moduli.

On the Brun--Titchmarsh theorem

Abstract:The classical Brun--Titchmarsh theorem gives an upper bound, which is of correct order of magnitude in the full range, for the number of primes $p\leqslant x$ satisfying $p\equiv a\bmod q$. We strength this inequality for $\log q/\log x$ in different ranges, improving upon previous works by Motohashi, Goldfeld, Iwaniec, Friedlander and Iwaniec, and Maynard for general or special moduli. In particular, we obtain a Burgess-like constant in the full range $q<x^{1/2-}.$ The proof is based on various estimates for character and exponential sums, by appealing to arithmetic exponent pairs and bilinear forms with algebraic trace functions from $\ell$-adic cohomology, and sums of Kloosterman sums from spectral theory of automorphic forms, as well as large value theorem for Dirichlet polynomials due to Huxley.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime number. Using modular arguments, we give an easy testable condition which allows often to prove Fermat's Last Theorem over the quadratic field ${\bf Q}(\sqrt{5})$ for the exponent $p$. It is related to the Wendt's resultant of the polynomials $X^n-1$ and $(X+1)^n-1$. We deduce Fermat's Last Theorem over this field in case one has $5\leq p<10^7$, and we obtain analogous results on Sophie Germain type criteria.

Abstract:Fermat's Little Theorem states that if p is a prime number and gcd (x,p) = 1, then xp−1 ≡ 1 (modp) If the requirement that gcd (x,p) = 1 is dropped, we can say xp ≡ x(modp)for any integer x. Euler generalized Fermat's Theorem in the following way: if gcd (x,n) = 1 then xφ(n) ≡ 1(modn), where φ is the Euler phi-function. It is clear that Euler's result cannot be extended to all integers x in the same way Fermat's Theorem can; that is, the congruence xφ(n)+1 ≡ x(modn)is not always valid. In this note we show exactly when the congruence xφ(n)+1 ≡ x(modn) is valid.

An explicit lower bound for large gaps between some consecutive primes

Abstract:Let $p_{n}$ denote the $n$th prime and for any fixed positive integer $k$ and $X\geq 2$, put \[ G_{k}(X):=\max _{p _{n+k}\leq X} \min \{ p_{n+1}-p_{n}, \ldots , p_{n+k}-p_{n+k-1} \}. \] Ford, Maynard and Tao proved that there exists an effective absolute constant $c_{LG}>0$ such that \[ G_{k}(X)\geq \frac{c_{LG}}{k^{2}}\frac{\log X \log \log X \log \log \log \log X}{\log \log \log X} \] holds for any sufficiently large $X$. The main purpose of this paper is to determine the constant $c_{LG}$ above. We see that $c_{LG}$ is determined by several factors related to analytic number theory, for example, the ratio of integrals of functions in the multidimensional sieve of Maynard, the distribution of primes in arithmetic progressions to large moduli, and the coefficient of upper bound sieve of Selberg. We prove that the above inequality is valid at least for $c_{LG}\approx 2.0\times 10^{-17}$.

Abstract:We prove that the primes below $x$ are, on average, equidistributed in arithmetic progressions to smooth moduli of size up to $x^{1/2+1/40-\epsilon}$. The exponent of distribution $\tfrac{1}{2} + \tfrac{1}{40}$ improves on a result of Polymath, who had previously obtained the exponent $\tfrac{1}{2} + \tfrac{7}{300}$. As a consequence, we improve results on intervals of bounded length which contain many primes, showing that $\liminf_{n \rightarrow \infty} (p_{n+m}-p_n) = O(\exp(3.8075 m))$. The main new ingredient of our proof is a modification of the q-van der Corput process. It allows us to exploit additional averaging for the exponential sums which appear in the Type I estimates of Polymath.

Abstract:Under Cramér's conjecture concerning the prime numbers, we prove that for any $x>1$, there exists a real $A=A(x)>1$ for which the formula $[A^{n^x}]$ (where $[]$ denotes the integer part) gives a prime number for any positive integer $n$. Under the same conjecture, we also prove that for any $\epsilon>0$, there exists a positive real number $B$ for which the formula $[B.{n!}^{2+\epsilon}]$ gives a prime number for any sufficiently large positive integer $n$.

Abstract:We show the primes have level of distribution $66/107\approx 0.617$ using triply well-factorable weights. This gives the highest level of distribution for primes in any setting, improving on the prior record level $3/5=0.60$ of Maynard. We also extend this level to $5/8=0.625$, assuming Selberg's eigenvalue conjecture. As applications of the method, we obtain new upper bounds for twin primes and for Goldbach representations of even numbers $a$. For the Goldbach problem, this is the first use of a level of distribution beyond the square-root barrier, and leads to the greatest improvement on the problem since Bombieri-Davenport from 1966. Our proof optimizes the Deshouillers-Iwaniec spectral large sieve estimates, both in the exceptional spectrum and uniformity in the residue $a$, refining Drappeau-Pratt-Radziwill and Assing-Blomer-Li.

Abstract:Assuming the Riemann hypothesis, this article discusses a new elementary argument that seems to prove that the maximal prime gap of a finite sequence of primes p_1, p_2, ..., p_n <= x, satisfies max {p_(n+1) - p_n : p_n <= x} <= c1((logx)^2)/loglogx, c1 > 0 constant. Equivalently, it shows that the very short intervals (x, x + y] contain prime numbers for all y > c2((logx)^2)/loglogx, c2 > 0 constant, and sufficiently large x > 0.

Abstract:For a prime number $p$ and integer $x$ with $\gcd(x,p)=1$ let $\overline{x}$ denote the multiplicative inverse of $x$ modulo $p.$ In the present paper we are interested in the problem of distribution modulo $p$ of the sequence $$ \overline{x}, \qquad x =1, \ldots, N, $$ and in lower bound estimates for the corresponding exponential sums. As representative examples, we state the following two consequences of the main results. Abstract:Let $\mathcal{P}_r$ denote an almost-prime with at most $r$ prime factors, counted according to multiplicity. In this paper, it is proved that, for $0.989<\gamma<1$, there exist infinitely many primes $p$ such that $[p^{1/\gamma}]=\mathcal{P}_7$, which constitutes an improvement upon the previous result of Banks-Guo-Shparlinski [4] who showed that there exist infinitely many primes $p$ such that $[p^{1/\gamma}]=\mathcal{P}_8$ for $\gamma$ near to one.

Abstract:One of the themes of this paper is recent results on large gaps between primes. The first of these results has been achieved in the paper [12] by Ford, Green, Konyagin and Tao. It was later improved in the joint paper [13] of these four authors with Maynard. One of the main ingredients of these results are old methods due to Erdős and Rankin. Other ingredients are important breakthrough results due to Goldston, Pintz and Yildirim [15, 16, 17], and their extension by Maynard on small gaps between primes. All these previous results are discussed shortly. The results on the appearance of $k$-th powers of primes contained in those large gaps, obtained by the author in joint work with Maier [23, 24, 25] are based on a combination of the results just described with the matrix method of Maier.

Abstract:Gerth generalised Cohen-Lenstra heuristics to the prime $p=2$. He conjectured that for any positive integer $m$, the limit $$ \lim_{x \to \infty} \frac{\sum_{0 < D \le X, \atop{ \text{squarefree} }} |{\rm Cl}^2_{\Q(\sqrt{D})}/{\rm Cl}^4_{\Q(\sqrt{D})}|^m}{\sum_{0 < D \le X, \atop{ \text{squarefree} }} 1} $$ exists and proposed a value for the limit. Gerth's conjecture was proved by Fouvry and Kluners in 2007. In this paper, we generalize their result by obtaining lower bounds for the average value of $|{\rm Cl}^2_Ł/{\rm Cl}^4_Ł|^m$, where $Ł$ varies over an infinite family of quadratic extensions of certain Galois number fields. As a special case of our theorem, we obtain lower bounds for the average value when the base field is any Galois number field with class number $1$ in which $2\Z$ splits.

Proof of the Complete Presence of a Modulo 4 Bias for the Semiprimes

Abstract:Dummit, Granville and Kisilevsky have recently shown that the proportion of semiprimes (products of two primes) not exceeding a given $x$, whose factors are congruent to $3$ modulo $4$, is more than a quarter when $x$ is sufficiently large. They have also conjectured that this holds from the very beginning, that is, for all $x \geq 9$. We give a proof for $x\geq 10^{21}$ via an explicit approach based on their work. Together with their data for the remaining $x$, this results in a full proof of the conjecture. Our method consists of techniques with cancellations of sums over primes with different remainders. We also rely on classical estimates for prime counting functions, as well as on very recent explicit improvements by Bennet, Martin, O'Bryant and Rechnitzer, which have wide applications in essentially any setting involving estimations of sums over primes.
