Abstract:We prove that for every nonnegative integer $m$ there exists an $\varepsilon>0$ such that if $\lambda\in (0,\varepsilon]$ and $x$ is sufficiently large in terms of $m$, then the number of positive integers $n\leq x$ for which the interval $[n,n+\lambda\log n]$ contains exactly $m$ primes is at least a constant times $x/\log x.$ This improves a result of T. Freiberg, when $\lambda$ is small.

Abstract:A well-known conjecture asserts that, for any given positive real number λ and nonnegative integer m, the proportion of positive integers n⩽x for which the interval (n,n+λlog⁡n] contains exactly m primes is asymptotically equal to λme−λ/m! as x tends to infinity. We show that the number of such n is at least x1−o(1).

Abstract:The Piatetski-Shapiro sequences are of the form $\mathcal{N}^{(c)} := (\lfloor n^c \rfloor)_{n=1}^\infty$ with $c > 1, c \not\in \mathbb{N}$. In this paper, we study the distribution of pairs $(p, p^{\#})$ of consecutive primes such that $p \in \mathcal{N}^{(c_1)}$ and $p^{\#} \in \mathcal{N}^{(c_2)}$ for $c_1, c_2 > 1$ and give a conjecture with the prime counting functions of the pairs $(p, p^{\#})$. We give a heuristic argument to support this prediction which relies on a strong form of the Hardy-Littlewood conjecture. Moreover, we prove a proposition related to the average of singular series with a weight of a complex exponential function.

Abstract:Baker, Harman, and Pintz showed that a weak form of the Prime Number Theorem holds in intervals of the form [x-x0.525,x]$$[x-x^{0.525},x]$$ for large x. In this paper, we extend a result of Maynard and Tao concerning small gaps between primes to intervals of this length. More precisely, we prove that for any δ∈[0.525,1]$$\delta \in [0.525,1]$$ there exist positive integers k, d such that for sufficiently large x, the interval [x-xδ,x]$$[x-x^\delta ,x]$$ contains ≫kxδ(logx)k$$\gg _{k} \frac{x^\delta }{(\log x)^k}$$ pairs of consecutive primes differing by at most d. This confirms a speculation of Maynard that results on small gaps between primes can be refined to the setting of short intervals of this length.

Abstract:We prove that the primes below $x$ are, on average, equidistributed in arithmetic progressions to smooth moduli of size up to $x^{1/2+1/40-\epsilon}$. The exponent of distribution $\tfrac{1}{2} + \tfrac{1}{40}$ improves on a result of Polymath, who had previously obtained the exponent $\tfrac{1}{2} + \tfrac{7}{300}$. As a consequence, we improve results on intervals of bounded length which contain many primes, showing that $\liminf_{n \rightarrow \infty} (p_{n+m}-p_n) = O(\exp(3.8075 m))$. The main new ingredient of our proof is a modification of the q-van der Corput process. It allows us to exploit additional averaging for the exponential sums which appear in the Type I estimates of Polymath.

Abstract:We denote, as usual, the number of integers not exceeding x having no prime factors greater than y by Ψ( x, y ). We also write The function Ψ( x, y ) is of great interest in number theory and has been studied by many researchers (see [ 3 ], [ 5 ] and [ 6 ] for example). The function Ψ( x, z, y ) has also received some attention (see [ 2 ], [ 4–6 ]). In this paper we shall try to obtain a positive lower bound for Ψ( x, z, y ) with y as small as possible when z is about x 1⁄2 in magnitude. We note that the approach in [ 5 ] and [ 6 ] allows y to be much smaller than is permissible here, but requires x/z to be smaller than any power of x in [ 6 ] (unless some conjecture like the Riemann Hypothesis is assumed), or needs in [ 5 ]. The following result was obtained by Balog[ 1 ].

Abstract:We generalise Zhang's and Pintz recent results on bounded prime gaps to give a lower bound for the the number of prime pairs bounded by 6*10^7 in the short interval $[x,x+x (\log x)^{-A}]$. Our result follows only by analysing Zhang's proof of Theorem 1, but we also explain how a sharper variant of Zhang's Theorem 2 would imply the same result for shorter intervals.

Abstract:In this paper we establish function field versions of two classical conjectures on prime numbers. The first says that the number of primes in intervals (x,x+xϵ] is about xϵ/logx. The second says that the number of primes p<x in the arithmetic progression p≡a(modd), for d<x1−δ, is about π(x)ϕ(d), where ϕ is the Euler totient function. More precisely, for short intervals we prove: Let k be a fixed integer. Then πq(I(f,ϵ))∼#I(f,ϵ)k,q→∞ holds uniformly for all prime powers q, degree k monic polynomials f∈Fq[t] and ϵ0(f,q)≤ϵ, where ϵ0 is either 1k, or 2k if p∣k(k−1), or 3k if further p=2 and degf'≤1. Here I(f,ϵ)={g∈Fq[t]∣deg(f−g)≤ϵdegf}, and πq(I(f,ϵ)) denotes the number of prime polynomials in I(f,ϵ). We show that this estimation fails in the neglected cases. For arithmetic progressions we prove: let k be a fixed integer. Then πq(k;D,f)∼πq(k)ϕ(D),q→∞, holds uniformly for all relatively prime polynomials D,f∈Fq[t] satisfying ‖D‖≤qk(1−δ0), where δ0 is either 3k or 4k if p=2 and (f/D)' is a constant. Here πq(k) is the number of degree k prime polynomials and πq(k;D,f) is the number of such polynomials in the arithmetic progression P≡f(modd). We also generalize these results to arbitrary factorization types.

Abstract:Zhang has shown there are infinitely many intervals of bounded length containing two primes. It appears that the current techniques cannot prove that there are infinitely many intervals of bounded length containing three primes, even if strong conjectures such as the Elliott-Halberstam conjecture are assumed. We show that there are infinitely many intervals of length at most $10^8$ which contain two primes and a number with at most 31 prime factors.

Abstract:For a prime number $p$ and integer $x$ with $\gcd(x,p)=1$ let $\overline{x}$ denote the multiplicative inverse of $x$ modulo $p.$ In the present paper we are interested in the problem of distribution modulo $p$ of the sequence $$ \overline{x}, \qquad x =1, \ldots, N, $$ and in lower bound estimates for the corresponding exponential sums. As representative examples, we state the following two consequences of the main results. For any fixed $A > 1$ and for any sufficiently large integer $N$ there exists a prime number $p$ with $$ (\log p)^A \asymp N $$ such that $$ \max_{\gcd(a,p)=1}\left|\sum_{x\le N}{\mathbf e}_p(a\overline{x})\right|\gg N. $$ For any fixed positive $\gamma< 1$ there exists a positive constant $c$ such that the following holds: for any sufficiently large integer $N$ there is a prime number $p > N$ such that $$ N > \exp\left(c(\log p\log\log p)^{\gamma/(1+\gamma)}\right) $$ and $$ \max_{\gcd(a,p)=1} \left|\sum_{x\le N}{\mathbf e}_p(a \overline{x})\right|\gg N^{1-\gamma}. $$

Abstract:The set of short intervals between consecutive primes squared has the pleasant---but seemingly unexploited---property that each interval $s_k:=\{p_k^2, \dots,p_{k+1}^2-1\}$ is fully sieved by the $k$ first primes. Here we take advantage of this essential characteristic and present evidence for the conjecture that $\pi_k \sim |s_k|/ \log p_{k+1}^2$, where $\pi_k$ is the number of primes in $s_k$; or even stricter, that $y=x^{1/2}$ is both necessary and sufficient for the prime number theorem to be valid in intervals of length $y$. In addition, we propose and substantiate that the prime counting function $\pi(x)$ is best understood as a sum of correlated random variables $\pi_k$. Under this assumption, we derive the theoretical variance of $\pi(p_{k+1}^2)=\sum_{j=1}^k \pi_j$, from which we are led to conjecture that $|\pi({x})-\textrm{li}(x)| =O(\sqrt{\textrm{li}(x)})$. Emerging from our investigations is the view that the intervals between consecutive primes squared hold the key to a furthered understanding of the distribution of primes; as evidenced, this perspective also builds strong support in favour of the Riemann hypothesis.

Abstract:Assuming the Riemann hypothesis, this article discusses a new elementary argument that seems to prove that the maximal prime gap of a finite sequence of primes p_1, p_2, ..., p_n <= x, satisfies max {p_(n+1) - p_n : p_n <= x} <= c1((logx)^2)/loglogx, c1 > 0 constant. Equivalently, it shows that the very short intervals (x, x + y] contain prime numbers for all y > c2((logx)^2)/loglogx, c2 > 0 constant, and sufficiently large x > 0.

Abstract:We establish quantitative lower bounds for the number of primes $p$ such that, for an odd integer $b$, $p - b \leq N$ and $p - b = 2^{k(N) + m} P_k \quad \text{for some } m \geq 0$, where $P_k$ is a product of at most $k$ primes other than 2, for $k \geq 2$. These results hold under various upper bounds for $2^{k(N)}$ depending on $k $, specifically when $2^{k(N)} \leq N^a$ for different values of $a$. Our approach combines techniques from Chen's theorem, weighted sieves, and Selberg's lower bound sieve, as well as results on primes in arithmetic progressions with large power factor moduli.
