Abstract:Fix coprime natural numbers $a,q$. Assuming the Prime $k$-tuple Conjecture, we show that there exist arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions of Carmichael numbers, each of which lies in the reduced residue class $a$ mod $q$ and is a product of three distinct prime numbers.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a large odd prime, let $x=(\log p)^{1+\varepsilon}$ and let $q\ll\log\log p$ be an integer, where $\varepsilon>0$ is a small number. This note proves the existence of small prime quadratic residues and prime quadratic nonresidues in the arithmetic progression $a+qm\ll x$, with relatively prime $1\leq a<q$, unconditionally. The same results are generalized to small prime $k$th power residues and nonresidues, where $k\mid p-1$ and $k\ll\log\log p$.

Abstract:Let $m$ be any positive integer and let $\delta_1,\delta_2\in\{1,-1\}$. We show that for some constanst $C_m>0$ there are infinitely many integers $n>1$ with $p_{n+m}-p_n\le C_m$ such that $$\left(\frac{p_{n+i}}{p_{n+j}}\right)=\delta_1\ \quad\text{and}\ \quad\left(\frac{p_{n+j}}{p_{n+i}}\right)=\delta_2$$ for all $0\le i<j\le m$, where $p_k$ denotes the $k$-th prime, and $(\frac {\cdot}p)$ denotes the Legendre symbol for any odd prime $p$. We also prove that under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis there are infinitely many positive integers $n$ such that $p_{n+i}$ is a primitive root modulo $p_{n+j}$ for any distinct $i$ and $j$ among $0,1,\ldots,m$.
Positive density for consecutive runs of sums of two squares

Abstract:We study the distribution of consecutive sums of two squares in arithmetic progressions. We show that for any odd squarefree modulus $q$, any two reduced congruence classes $a_1$ and $a_2$ mod $q$, and any $r_1,r_2 \ge 1$, a positive density of sums of two squares begin a chain of $r_1$ consecutive sums of two squares, all of which are $a_1$ mod $q$, followed immediately by a chain of $r_2$ consecutive sums of two squares, all of which are $a_2$ mod $q$. This is an analog of the result of Maynard for the sequence of primes, showing that for any reduced congruence class $a$ mod $q$ and for any $r \ge 1$, a positive density of primes begin a sequence of $r$ consecutive primes, all of which are $a$ mod $q$.

Moments of primes in progresssions to a large modulus

Abstract:Assuming a uniform variant of the Hardy-Littlewood prime $k$-tuple conjecture, we compute moments of the number of primes not exceeding $N$ in arithmetic progressions to a common large modulus $q$ as $a \pmod{q}$ varies. As a consequence, depending on the size of $\varphi(q)$ with respect to $N$, the prime count exhibits a Gaussian or Poissonian law. An interesting byproduct is that the least prime in arithmetic progressions follows an exponential distribution, where some unexpected discrepancies are observed for smooth $q$.

Abstract:Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, it is known that at least half of the central values $L(\frac{1}{2},\chi)$ are non-vanishing as $\chi$ ranges over primitive characters modulo $q$. Unconditionally, this is known on average over both $\chi$ modulo $q$ and $Q/2 \leq q \leq 2Q$. We prove that for any $\delta>0$, there exist $\eta_1,\eta_2>0$ depending on $\delta$ such that the non-vanishing proportion for $L(\frac{1}{2},\chi)$ as $\chi$ ranges modulo $q$ with $q$ varying in short intervals of size $Q^{1-\eta_1}$ around $Q$ and in arithmetic progressions with moduli up to $Q^{\eta_2}$ is larger than $\frac{1}{2}-\delta$.

Abstract:A conjecture of Erdős states that, for any large prime $q$, every reduced residue class $\pmod q$ can be represented as a product $p_1p_2$ of two primes $p_1,p_2\leq q$. We establish a ternary version of this conjecture, showing that, for any sufficiently large cube-free integer $q$, every reduced residue class $\pmod q$ can be written as $p_1p_2p_3$ with $p_1,p_2,p_3\leq q$ primes. We also show that, for any $\varepsilon > 0$ and any sufficiently large integer $q$, at least $(2/3-\varepsilon)\varphi(q)$ reduced residue classes $\pmod q$ can be represented as a product $p_1 p_2$ of two primes $p_1, p_2 \leq q$. The problems naturally reduce to studying character sums. The main innovation in the paper is the establishment of a multiplicative dense model theorem for character sums over primes in the spirit of the transference principle. In order to deal with possible local obstructions we use bounds for the logarithmic density of primes in certain unions of cosets of subgroups of $\mathbb{Z}_q^\times$ of small index and study in detail the exceptional case that there exists a quadratic character $\psi \pmod{q}$ such that $\psi(p) = -1$ for almost all primes $p \leq q$.

Abstract:We study the existence of products of primes in arithmetic progressions, building on the work of Ramaré and Walker. One of our main results is that if q is a large modulus, then any invertible residue class mod q contains a product of three primes where each prime is at most q6/5+ε . Our arguments use results from a wide range of areas, such as sieve theory or additive combinatorics, and one of our key ingredients, which has not been used in this setting before, is a result by Heath‐Brown on character sums over primes from his paper on Linnik's theorem.

Abstract:We consider small solutions of quadratic congruences of the form $x_1^2+\alpha_2x_2^2+\alpha_3x_3^2\equiv 0 \bmod{q}$, where $q=p^m$ is an odd prime power. Here, $\alpha_2$ is arbitrary but fixed and $\alpha_3$ is variable, and we assume that $(\alpha_2\alpha_3,q)=1$. We show that for all $\alpha_3$ modulo $q$ which are coprime to $q$ except for a small number of $\alpha_3$'s, an asymptotic formula for the number of solutions $(x_1,x_2,x_3)$ to the congruence $x_1^2+\alpha_2x_2^2+\alpha_3x_3^2\equiv 0 \bmod{q}$ with $\max\{|x_1|,|x_2|,|x_3|\}\le N$ holds if $N\ge q^{11/24+\varepsilon}$ as $q$ tends to infinity over the set of all odd prime powers. It is of significance that we break the barrier 1/2 in the above exponent. If $q$ is restricted to powers $p^m$ of a {\it fixed} prime $p$ and $m$ tends to infinity, we obtain a slight improvement of this result using the theory of $p$-adic exponent pairs, as developed by Milićević, replacing the exponent $11/24$ above by $11/25$. Under the Lindelöf hypothesis for Dirichlet $L$-functions, we are able to replace the exponent $11/24$ above by $1/3$.

Abstract:Let $a_1 = 1$ and, for $n > 1$, $a_n = a_{n-1} + a_{\left \lfloor \frac{n}{2} \right \rfloor}$. In this paper we will look at congruence properties and the growth rate of this sequence. First we will show that if $x \in \{1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 \}$, then the natural density of $n$ such that $a_n \equiv x \pmod{8}$ exists and equals $\frac{1}{6}$. Next we will prove that if $m \le 15$ is not divisible by $4$, then the lower density of $n$ such that $a_n$ is divisible by $m$, is strictly positive. To put these results in a broader context, we will then posit a general conjecture about the density of $n$ such that $a_n \equiv x \pmod{m}$ for any given $x$ and any $m$ not divisible by $32$. Finally, we will show that there exists a function $f$ such that $n^{f(n)} < a_n < n^{f(n) + \epsilon}$ for all $\epsilon > 0$ and all large enough $n$.

Abstract:Given a prime power $q$ and a positive integer $n$, let $\mathbb{F}_{q^{n}}$ represents a finite extension of degree $n$ of the finite field ${\mathbb{F}_{q}}$. In this article, we investigate the existence of $m$ elements in arithmetic progression, where every element is primitive and at least one is normal with prescribed norms. Moreover, for $n\geq6,q=3^k,m=2$ we establish that there are only $10$ possible exceptions.

Abstract:Let $p\geq3$ be a large prime and let $n(p)\geq2$ denotes the least quadratic nonresidue modulo $p$. This note sharpens the standard upper bound of the least quadratic nonresidue from the unconditional upper bound $n(p)\ll p^{1/4\sqrt{e}+\varepsilon}$ to the conjectured upper bound $n(p)\ll (\log p)^{1+\varepsilon}$, where $\varepsilon>0$ is a small number, unconditionally. This improvement breaks the exponential upper bound barrier.

Abstract:We show the primes have level of distribution $66/107\approx 0.617$ using triply well-factorable weights. This gives the highest level of distribution for primes in any setting, improving on the prior record level $3/5=0.60$ of Maynard. We also extend this level to $5/8=0.625$, assuming Selberg's eigenvalue conjecture. As applications of the method, we obtain new upper bounds for twin primes and for Goldbach representations of even numbers $a$. For the Goldbach problem, this is the first use of a level of distribution beyond the square-root barrier, and leads to the greatest improvement on the problem since Bombieri-Davenport from 1966. Our proof optimizes the Deshouillers-Iwaniec spectral large sieve estimates, both in the exceptional spectrum and uniformity in the residue $a$, refining Drappeau-Pratt-Radziwill and Assing-Blomer-Li.

A note on congruences for generalized cubic partitions modulo primes

Abstract:Recently, Amdeberhan, Sellers and Singh introduced the notion of a generalized cubic partition function $a_c(n)$ and proved two isolated congruences via modular forms, namely $a_3(7n+4)\equiv 0\pmod{7}$ and $a_5(11n+10)\equiv 0\pmod{11}$. In this paper, we provide another proofs of these congruences using classical $q$-series manipulations. We also give an infinite family of congruences for $a_c(n)$ for primes $p\equiv 5,7\pmod{8}$ and other isolated congruences modulo $19,23$ and $31$ using modular forms.

Abstract:We study small non-trivial solutions of quadratic congruences of the form $x_1^2+\alpha_2x_2^2+\alpha_3x_3^2\equiv 0 \bmod{q}$, with $q$ being an odd natural number, in an average sense. This extends previous work of the authors in which they considered the case of prime power moduli $q$. Above, $\alpha_2$ is arbitrary but fixed and $\alpha_3$ is variable, and we assume that $(\alpha_2\alpha_3,q)=1$. We show that for all $\alpha_3$ modulo $q$ which are coprime to $q$ except for a small number of $\alpha_3$'s, an asymptotic formula for the number of solutions $(x_1,x_2,x_3)$ to the congruence $x_1^2+\alpha_2x_2^2+\alpha_3x_3^2\equiv 0 \bmod{q}$ with $\max\{|x_1|,|x_2|,|x_3|\}\le N$ and $(x_3,q)=1$ holds if $N\ge q^{11/24+\varepsilon}$ and $q$ is large enough. It is of significance that we break the barrier 1/2 in the above exponent. Key tools in our work are Burgess's estimate for character sums over short intervals and Heath-Brown's estimate for character sums with binary quadratic forms over small regions whose proofs depend on the Riemann hypothesis for curves over finite fields. We also formulate a refined conjecture about the size of the smallest solution of a ternary quadratic congruence, using information about the Diophantine properties of its coefficients.
