Abstract:This note shows that the hope expressed in [ADL+07]--that the new algorithm for edge-unfolding any polyhedral band without overlap might lead to an algorithm for unfolding any prismatoid without overlap--cannot be realized. A prismatoid is constructed whose sides constitute a nested polyhedral band, with the property that every placement of the prismatoid top face overlaps with the band unfolding.

Abstract:A polycube is an orthogonal polyhedron composed of unit cubes glued together along entire faces, homeomorphic to a sphere. A polycube layer is the section of the polycube that lies between two horizontal cross-sections of the polycube at unit distance from each other. An edge unfolding of a polycube involves cutting its surface along any of the constituent cube edges and flattening it into a single, non-overlapping planar piece. We show that any polycube with orthogonally convex layers can be edge unfolded.

Abstract:An example of reversible (or hinge inside-out transformable) figures is the Dudeney's Haberdasher's puzzle in which an equilateral triangle is dissected into four pieces, then hinged like a chain, and then is transformed into a square by rotating the hinged pieces. Furthermore, the entire boundary of each figure goes into the inside of the other figure and becomes the dissection lines of the other figure. Many intriguing results on reversibilities of figures have been found in prior research, but most of them are results on polygons. This paper generalizes those results to a wider range of general connected figures. It is shown that two nets obtained by cutting the surface of an arbitrary convex polyhedron along non-intersecting dissection trees are reversible. Moreover, a condition for two nets of an isotetrahedron to be both reversible and tessellative is given.

Abstract:A notion of "radially monotone" cut paths is introduced as an effective choice for finding a non-overlapping edge-unfolding of a convex polyhedron. These paths have the property that the two sides of the cut avoid overlap locally as the cut is infinitesimally opened by the curvature at the vertices along the path. It is shown that a class of planar, triangulated convex domains always have a radially monotone spanning forest, a forest that can be found by an essentially greedy algorithm. This algorithm can be mimicked in 3D and applied to polyhedra inscribed in a sphere. Although the algorithm does not provably find a radially monotone cut tree, it in fact does find such a tree with high frequency, and after cutting unfolds without overlap. This performance of a greedy algorithm leads to the conjecture that spherical polyhedra always have a radially monotone cut tree and unfold without overlap.

Overlapping Edge Unfoldings for Convex Regular-faced Polyhedra

Abstract:Herein, we discuss the existence of overlapping edge unfoldings for convex regular-faced polyhedra. Horiyama and Shoji showed that there are no overlapping edge unfoldings for all platonic solids and five of the Archimedean solids. The remaining five Archimedean solids were found to have edge unfoldings that overlap. In this study, we propose a method called rotational unfolding to find an overlapping edge unfolding of a polyhedron. We show that all the edge unfoldings of an icosidodecahedron, a rhombitruncated cuboctahedron, an n -gonal Archimedean prism ( 3≤n≤23 ), an m -gonal Archimedean antiprism ( 3≤m≤11 ), and 48 types of Johnson solids do not overlap. Our algorithm finds overlapping edge unfoldings for the snub cube, and 44 types of Johnson solids. We present analytic proof that an overlapping edge unfolding exists in an n -gonal Archimedean prism ( n≥24 ), and an m -gonal Archimedean antiprism ( m≥12 ). Our results prove the existence of overlapping edge unfoldings for convex regular-faced polyhedra.

Abstract:We report the controlled synthesis of free-standing ZnO nanobelts whose surfaces are dominated by the large polar surfaces. The nanobelts grow along the a axis, their large top/bottom surfaces are the ±(0001) polar planes, and the side surfaces are (011̄0). Owing to the positive and negative ionic charges on the zinc- and oxygen-terminated ±(0001) surfaces, respectively, the nanobelts form multiloops of nanohelixes/nanosprings/nanospirals for the sake of reducing electrostatic energy introduced by the polar surfaces as well as balancing the difference in surface tension. The polar surface dominated ZnO nanobelts are likely to be an ideal system for understanding piezoelectricity and polarization induced phenomena at nanoscale.

Abstract:A $3$-Prismatoid is the convex hull of two convex polygons $A$ and $B$ which lie in parallel planes $H_A, H_B\subset\mathbb{R}^3$. Let $A'$ be the orthogonal projection of $A$ onto $H_B$. A prismatoid is called nested if $A'$ is properly contained in $B$, or vice versa. We show that every nested prismatoid has an edge-unfolding to a non-overlapping polygon in the plane.

Abstract:Topological field structures, such as skyrmions, merons, and vortices, are important features found in ordered systems with spontaneously broken symmetry. A plethora of topological field structures have been discovered in magnetic and ordered soft matter systems due to the presence of inherent chiral interactions, and this has provided a fruitful platform for unearthing additional groundbreaking functionalities. However, despite being one of the most important classes of ordered systems, ferroelectrics scarcely form topological polarization structures due to their lack of intrinsic chiral interactions. In the present study, we demonstrate using multiphysics phase-field modelling based on the Ginzburg-Landau theory that a rich assortment of nontrivial topological polarization structures, including hedgehogs, antivortices, multidirectional vortices, and vortex arrays, can be spontaneously formed in three-dimensional nanoporous ferroelectric structures. We realize that confining ferroelectrics to trivial geometries that are incompatible with the orientation symmetry may impose extrinsic frustration to the polarization field through the enhancement of depolarization fields at free porous surfaces. This frustration gives rise to symmetry breaking, resulting in the formation of nontrivial topological polarization structures as the ground state. We further topologically characterize the local accommodation of polarization structures by viewing them in a new perspective, in which polarization ordering can be mapped on the order parameter space, according to the topological theory of defects and homotopy theory. The results indicate that the nanoporous structures contain composite topological objects composed of two or more elementary topological polarization structures. The present study therefore offers a playground for exploring novel physical phenomena in ferroelectric systems as well as a novel nanoelectronics characterization platform for future topology-based nanotechnologies.

In this paper, we investigate the topological nature of the polar mapping A → A ° on , where d AW denotes the Attouch–Wets metric. We prove that is homeomorphic to the Hilbert cube and the polar mapping is topologically conjugate with the standard based-free involution σ : Q → Q , defined by σ ( x ) = − x for all x ∈ Q . We also prove that among the inclusion-reversing involutions on (also called dualities), those and only those with a unique fixed point are topologically conjugate with the polar mapping, and they can be characterized as all the maps of the form f ( A ) = T ( A °), with T a positive-definite linear isomorphism of R n .

Abstract:Eric Lord has observed: "In nature, helical structures arise when identical structural subunits combine sequentially, the orientational and translational relation between each unit and its predecessor remaining constant." This paper proves Lord's observation. Constant-time algorithms are given for the segmented helix generated from the intrinsic properties of a stacked object and its conjoining rule. Standard results from screw theory and previous work are combined with corollaries of Lord's observation to allow calculations of segmented helices from either transformation matrices or four known consecutive points. The construction of these from the intrinsic properties of the rule for conjoining repeated subunits of arbitrary shape is provided, allowing the complete parameters describing the unique segmented helix generated by arbitrary stackings to be easily calculated. Free/Libre open-source interactive software and a website which performs this computation for arbitrary prisms along with interactive 3D visualization is provided. We prove that any subunit can produce a toroid-like helix or a maximally-extended helix, forming a continuous spectrum based on joint-face normal twist. This software, website and paper, taken together, compute, render, and catalog an exhaustive "zoo" of 28 uniquely-shaped platonic helices, such as the Boerdijk–Coxeter tetrahelix and various species of helices formed from dodecahedra.

Unknotting Nonorientable Surfaces of Genus 4 and 5

Abstract:Expanding on work by Conway, Orson, and Powell, we study the isotopy classes rel. boundary of nonorientable, compact, locally flatly embedded surfaces in $D^4$ with knot group $\mathbb{Z}_2$. In particular we show that if two such surfaces have fixed knot boundary $K$ in $S^4$ such that $\vert \det(K) \vert =1$, the same normal Euler number, and the same nonorientable genus $4$ or $5$, then they are ambiently isotopic rel. boundary. This implies that closed, nonorientable, locally flatly embedded surfaces in the $4$-sphere with knot group $\mathbb{Z}_2$ of nonorientable genus $4$ and $5$ are topologically unknotted. The proof relies on calculations, implemented in Sage, which imply that the modified surgery obstruction is elementary. Furthermore we show that this method fails for nonorientable genus $6$ and $7$.

Abstract:A triangulation is called $z$-knotted if it has a single zigzag (up to reversing). A $z$-orientation on a triangulation is a minimal collection of zigzags which double covers the set of edges. An edge is of type I if zigzags from the $z$-orientation pass through it in different directions, otherwise this edge is of type II. If all zigzags from the $z$-orientation contain precisely two edges of type I after any edge of type II, then the $z$-oriented triangulation is said to be $z$-homogeneous. We describe an algorithm transferring each $z$-homogeneous trianguation to other $z$-homogeneous triangulation which is also $z$-knotted.

Universal Zigzag Edge Reconstruction of an α-Phase Puckered Monolayer and Its Resulting Robust Spatial Charge Separation

Abstract:Edges are important, because they dictate the stability and properties of nanoribbons. Here, we reveal a universal reconstruction of the ZZ edge into a (2 × 1) tubed [ZZ(Tube)] edge, enabling an ultimate narrow nanotube to terminate nanoribbons for α-puckered group-V elemental and compound monolayers (GeS/Se and SnS/Se). The reconstructed edge formations are confirmed by CALYPSO. The ZZ(Tube) edge forms easily, is highly stable, and is semiconducting. Remarkably, the ZZ(Tube) edge always exhibits a type-II band structure and robust spatial charge separation. For a compound monolayer monochalcogenide, mild (2 × 1) ZZ(S-R) occurs at the chalcogenide-terminated edge. TDDFT simulations indicate that charge separation occurs only at 672 fs, while the lifetime is over 5 ns, thus facilitating robust spatial charge accumulation. Abstract:In this paper, we define the edge zeta function of weighted complex. We also present the formula for the edge zeta function of the standard non-uniform complex $\operatorname{PGL}(3,\mathbb{F}_q[t])\backslash\operatorname{PGL}(3,\mathbb{F}_q(\!(t^{-1})\!))/\operatorname{PGL}(3,\mathbb{F}_q[\![t^{-1}]\!])$, arising from the group $\operatorname{PGL}_3$, as a rational function. Applying trunction in a specific direction is one of the main ingredient. As a result, we obtain the exact formula for the number of closed cycles coming from geodesics in the building.

Abstract:We present new examples of topologically convex edge-ununfoldable polyhedra, i.e., polyhedra that are combinatorially equivalent to convex polyhedra, yet cannot be cut along their edges and unfolded into one planar piece without overlap. One family of examples is acutely triangulated, i.e., every face is an acute triangle. Another family of examples is stacked, i.e., the result of face-to-face gluings of tetrahedra. Both families achieve another natural property, which we call very ununfoldable: for every $k$, there is an example such that every nonoverlapping multipiece edge unfolding has at least $k$ pieces.
