Abstract:We study the solutions of the local Zamolodhcikov tetrahedron equation in the form of correspondences derived by $3\times 3$ matrices. We present all the associated generators of 4-simplex maps satisfying the local tetrahedron equation. Moreover, we demonstrate that, from some of our solutions, we can recover the 4-simplex extensions of Kashaev--Korepanov--Sergeev and Hirota type tetrahedron maps. Finally, we construct several novel 4-simplex maps.

Solutions to quantum tetrahedron equation with two colors and nonnegative matrix entries

Abstract:In this short note, we construct solutions to quantum tetrahedron equation of the kind "with variables on the edges". Each of these variables takes just two values, called sometimes "colors". We propose two different constructions. The first of them involves, in particular, two $\mathcal R$-operators each depending on one parameter, while these parameters are independent from each other; the number of nonvanishing matrix entries in these two $\mathcal R$-operators is either 12 or 14. In the second construction, we use what may be called "modified tetrahedron in a direct sum" to produce, again, quantum tetrahedron solutions. All matrix entries of our $\mathcal R$-operators are nonnegative, if the relevant parameters are chosen properly.

Algebraic and differential-geometric constructions of set-theoretical solutions to the Zamolodchikov tetrahedron equation

Abstract:We present several algebraic and differential-geometric constructions of tetrahedron maps, which are set-theoretical solutions to the Zamolodchikov tetrahedron equation. In particular, we obtain a family of new (nonlinear) polynomial tetrahedron maps on the space of square matrices of arbitrary size, using a matrix refactorisation equation, which does not coincide with the standard local Yang--Baxter equation. Liouville integrability is established for some of these maps. Also, we show how to derive linear tetrahedron maps as linear approximations of nonlinear ones, using Lax representations and the differentials of nonlinear tetrahedron maps on manifolds. We apply this construction to two nonlinear maps: a tetrahedron map obtained in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1708.05694" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1708.05694">arXiv:1708.05694</a>] in a study of soliton solutions of vector KP equations and a tetrahedron map obtained in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2005.13574" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2005.13574">arXiv:2005.13574</a>] in a study of a matrix trifactorisation problem related to a Darboux matrix associated with a Lax operator for the NLS equation. We derive parametric families of new linear tetrahedron maps (with nonlinear dependence on parameters), which are linear approximations for these nonlinear ones. Furthermore, we present (nonlinear) matrix generalisations of a tetrahedron map from Sergeev's classification [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="solv-int/9709006" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/solv-int/9709006">arXiv:solv-int/9709006</a>]. These matrix generalisations can be regarded as tetrahedron maps in noncommutative variables. Besides, several tetrahedron maps on arbitrary groups are constructed.

Noncommutative solutions to Zamolodchikov's tetrahedron equation and matrix six-factorisation problems

Abstract:It is known that the local Yang--Baxter equation is a generator of potential solutions to Zamolodchikov's tetrahedron equation. In this paper, we show under which additional conditions the solutions to the local Yang--Baxter equation are tetrahedron maps, namely solutions to the set-theoretical tetrahedron equation. This is exceptionally useful when one wants to prove that noncommutative maps satisfy the Zamolodchikov's tetrahedron equation. We construct new noncommutative maps and we prove that they possess the tetrahedron property. Moreover, by employing Darboux transformations with noncommutative variables, we derive noncommutative tetrahedron maps. In particular, we derive a noncommutative nonlinear Schrödinger type of tetrahedron map which can be restricted to a noncommutative version of Sergeev's map on invariant leaves. We prove that these maps are tetrahedron maps.

Abstract:A fixed point theorem is used to study a singular second order three-point boundary value problem. The problem is more general. Combining the method of constructing Green functions with operators defined piecewise, the existence result of positive solutions to a singular second order three-point boundary value problem is established. The nonlinearity can be allowed to change sign.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to tetrahedron maps, which are set-theoretical solutions to the Zamolodchikov tetrahedron equation. We construct a family of tetrahedron maps on associative rings. We show that matrix tetrahedron maps presented in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2110.05998" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2110.05998">arXiv:2110.05998</a>] are a particular case of our construction. This provides an algebraic explanation of the fact that the matrix maps from [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2110.05998" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2110.05998">arXiv:2110.05998</a>] satisfy the tetrahedron equation. Also, Liouville integrability is established for some of the constructed maps.

A class of explicit solutions for the Fermat problem for tetrahedra

Abstract:We present a class of explicit solutions for the problem of minimization of the function $f(x,y,z)=\sum_{i=1}^{4}\sqrt{(x-x_{i})^2+(y-y_{i})^2+(z-z_{i})^2},$ which gives the location of the unique stationary (Fermat-Torricelli) point for four non-collinear and non-coplanar points $A_{i}=(x_{i},y_{i},z_{i}),$ determining tetrahedra, which are derived by a proper class of isosceles tetrahedra having four equal edges and two equal opposite edges. This class of explicit solutions contains Mehlhos and Glastier's explicit solutions (theoretical constructions) obtained in \cite{Mehlhos:00} and \cite{Glastier:93}, respectively.

Solutions of tetrahedron equation from quantum cluster algebra associated with symmetric butterfly quiver

Abstract:We construct a new solution to the tetrahedron equation by further pursuing the quantum cluster algebra approach in our previous works. The key ingredients include a symmetric butterfly quiver attached to the wiring diagrams for the longest element of type $A$ Weyl groups and the implementation of quantum $Y$-variables through the $q$-Weyl algebra. The solution consists of four products of quantum dilogarithms, incorporating a total of seven parameters. By exploring both the coordinate and momentum representations, along with their modular double counterparts, our solution encompasses various known three-dimensional (3D) $R$-matrices. These include those obtained by Kapranov-Voevodsky ('94) utilizing the quantized coordinate ring, Bazhanov-Mangazeev-Sergeev ('10) from a quantum geometry perspective, Kuniba-Matsuike-Yoneyama ('23) linked with the quantized six-vertex model, and Inoue-Kuniba-Terashima ('23) associated with the Fock-Goncharov quiver. The 3D $R$-matrix presented in this paper offers a unified perspective on these existing solutions, coalescing them within the framework of quantum cluster algebra.

Abstract:We study tetrahedron maps, which are set-theoretical solutions to the Zamolodchikov tetrahedron equation, and Yang-Baxter maps, which are set-theoretical solutions to the quantum Yang-Baxter equation. In particular, we clarify the structure of the nonlinear algebraic relations which define linear (parametric) tetrahedron maps (with nonlinear dependence on parameters), and we present several transformations which allow one to obtain new such maps from known ones. Furthermore, we prove that the differential of a (nonlinear) tetrahedron map on a manifold is a tetrahedron map as well. Similar results on the differentials of Yang-Baxter and entwining Yang-Baxter maps are also presented. Using the obtained general results, we construct new examples of (parametric) Yang-Baxter and tetrahedron maps. The considered examples include maps associated with integrable systems and matrix groups. In particular, we obtain a parametric family of new linear tetrahedron maps, which are linear approximations for the nonlinear tetrahedron map constructed by Dimakis and Müller-Hoissen [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1708.05694" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1708.05694">arXiv:1708.05694</a>] in a study of soliton solutions of vector Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equations. Also, we present invariants for this nonlinear tetrahedron map.

Abstract:We study tetrahedron maps, which are set-theoretical solutions to the Zamolodchikov tetrahedron equation, and their matrix Lax representations defined by the local Yang--Baxter equation. Sergeev [S.M. Sergeev 1998 Lett. Math. Phys. 45, 113--119] presented classification results on three-dimensional tetrahedron maps obtained from the local Yang--Baxter equation for a certain class of matrix-functions in the situation when the equation possesses a unique solution which determines a tetrahedron map. In this paper, using correspondences arising from the local Yang--Baxter equation for some simple $2\times 2$ matrix-functions, we show that there are (non-unique) solutions to the local Yang--Baxter equation which define tetrahedron maps that do not belong to the Sergeev list; this paves the way for a new, wider classification of tetrahedron maps. We present invariants for the derived tetrahedron maps and prove Liouville integrability for some of them. Furthermore, using the approach of solving correspondences arising from the local Yang--Baxter equation, we obtain several new birational tetrahedron maps, including maps with matrix Lax representations on arbitrary groups, a $9$-dimensional map associated with a Darboux transformation for the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation, and a $9$-dimensional generalisation of the $3$-dimensional Hirota map.

Abstract:Bethe Ansatz was discoverd in 1932. Half a century later its algebraic structure was unearthed: Yang-Baxter equation was discovered, as well as its multidimensional generalizations [tetrahedron equation and $d$-simplex equations]. Here we describe a universal method to solve these equations using Clifford algebras. The Yang-Baxter equation ($d=2$), Zamalodchikov's tetrahedron equation ($d=3$) and the Bazhanov-Stroganov equation ($d=4$) are special cases. Our solutions form a linear space. This helps us to include spectral parameters. Potential applications are discussed.

Abstract:We develop the quantum cluster algebra approach recently introduced by Sun and Yagi to investigate the tetrahedron equation, a three-dimensional generalization of the Yang-Baxter equation. In the case of square quiver, we devise a new realization of quantum Y-variables in terms -Weyl algebras and obtain a solution that possesses three spectral parameters. It is expressed in various forms, comprising four products of quantum dilogarithms depending on the signs in decomposing the quantum mutations into the automorphism part and the monomial part. For a specific choice of them, our formula precisely reproduces Sergeev's matrix, which corresponds to a vertex formulation of the Zamolodchikov-Bazhanov-Baxter model when is specialized to a root of unity.

On equilibria of tetrahedra

Abstract:The monostatic property of polyhedra (i.e. the property of having just one stable or unstable static equilibrium point) has been in a focus of research ever since Conway and Guy \cite{Conway} published the proof of the existence of the first such object. In the same article they also proved that a homogeneous tetrahedron has at least two stable equilibrium points. By using polar duality, the same idea has been used \cite{balancing} to prove that a homogeneous tetrahedron has at least two unstable equilibria. Conway \cite{Dawson} also claimed that among inhomogeneous tetrahedra one can find monostable ones. Here we not only give a formal proof of this statement and show that monostatic tetrahedra have exactly 4 equilibria, but also demonstrate a startling new aspect of this problem: being monostatic implies certain \emph{visible} features of the shape and vice versa. Our results also imply that mono-monostatic tetrahedra (having just one stable and just one unstable equilibrium point) do not exist. In contrast, we show that for any other legal number of faces, edges, and vertices there is a mono-monostatic polyhedron with that face vector.

Abstract:The tetrahedron equation introduced by Zamolodchikov is a three-dimensional generalization of the Yang-Baxter equation. Several types of solutions to the tetrahedron equation that have connections to quantum groups can be viewed as $q$-oscillator valued vertex models with matrix elements of the $L$-operators given by generators of the $q$-oscillator algebra acting on the Fock space. Using one of the $q=0$-oscillator valued vertex models introduced by Bazhanov-Sergeev, we introduce a family of partition functions that admits an explicit algebraic presentation using Schur functions. Our construction is based on the three-dimensional realization of the Zamolodchikov-Faddeev algebra provided by Kuniba-Okado-Maruyama. Furthermore, we investigate an inhomogeneous generalization of the three-dimensional lattice model. We show that the inhomogeneous analog of (a certain subclass of) partition functions can be expressed as loop elementary symmetric functions.

Abstract:The iterated Crank-Nicolson is a predictor-corrector algorithm commonly used in numerical relativity for the solution of both hyperbolic and parabolic partial differential equations. We here extend the recent work on the stability of this scheme for hyperbolic equations by investigating the properties when the average between the predicted and corrected values is made with unequal weights and when the scheme is applied to a parabolic equation. We also propose a variant of the scheme in which the coefficients in the averages are swapped between two corrections leading to systematically larger amplification factors and to a smaller numerical dispersion.

Abstract:We established a method for obtaining set-theoretical solutions to the 3D reflection equation by using known ones to the Zamolodchikov tetrahedron equation, where the former equation was proposed by Isaev and Kulish as a boundary analog of the latter. By applying our method to Sergeev's electrical solution and a two-component solution associated with the discrete modified KP equation, we obtain new solutions to the 3D reflection equation. Our approach is closely related to a relation between the transition maps of Lusztig's parametrizations of the totally positive part of $SL_3$ and $SO_5$, which is obtained via folding the Dynkin diagram of $A_3$ into one of $B_2$.

Abstract:Kedlaya, Kolpakov, Poonen, and Rubinstein classified tetrahedra all of whose dihedral angles are rational multiples of $\pi$ into two one-parameter families (a Hill family and a new family) and $59$ sporadic tetrahedra. In this paper, we consider which of them tile space; we show that every member of the Hill family, exactly one member of the new family, and at most $40$ sporadic tetrahedra tile space. As a corollary, we disprove the converse of Debrunner's theorem, showing that not all Dehn invariant zero tetrahedra tile space.
