Abstract:Kedlaya, Kolpakov, Poonen, and Rubinstein classified tetrahedra all of whose dihedral angles are rational multiples of $\pi$ into two one-parameter families (a Hill family and a new family) and $59$ sporadic tetrahedra. In this paper, we consider which of them tile space; we show that every member of the Hill family, exactly one member of the new family, and at most $40$ sporadic tetrahedra tile space. As a corollary, we disprove the converse of Debrunner's theorem, showing that not all Dehn invariant zero tetrahedra tile space.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to determine which tetrahedra with rational dihedral angles can tile space. Specifically, the author focuses on which of the tetrahedra, all of whose dihedral angles are rational multiples of \(\pi\) as classified by Kedlaya, Kolpakov, Poonen and Rubinstein, can tile three - dimensional space. According to the abstract and introduction parts of the paper, the main objectives of the research can be summarized as follows: 1. **Classify tetrahedra that tile space**: - Researchers have divided these tetrahedra into two categories: one is the one - parameter family (Hill family), and the other is 59 sporadic tetrahedra. - The goal of the paper is to determine which of these tetrahedra can tile space. 2. **Verify and extend known results**: - The author mentions that all members of the Hill family can tile space. - They also find that only one member in the new family can tile space. - For the 59 sporadic tetrahedra, at most 40 can tile space. 3. **Overturn the converse of Debrunner's theorem**: - Debrunner's theorem states that a polyhedron that can tile space must have a zero Dehn invariant. - Through their research, the author proves that not all tetrahedra with a zero Dehn invariant can tile space, thus overturning the converse of Debrunner's theorem. ### Main Results - **Theorem 1.1**: All tetrahedra in the Hill family can tile space. - **Theorem 1.2**: Among the 59 sporadic tetrahedra, at most 40 can tile space. See Table A in the paper for the specific list. - **Corollary 1.3**: Not all tetrahedra with a zero Dehn invariant can tile space. ### Methods and Techniques To achieve the above goals, the author uses a variety of methods and techniques, including but not limited to: - **Combinatorial conditions**: Judge whether a tetrahedron can tile space by analyzing the combination of dihedral angles. - **Linear programming**: Use the method of linear programming to verify whether certain tetrahedra can tile space. - **Geometric properties**: Analyze the geometric properties of tetrahedra, such as the relationship between side lengths and dihedral angles, to exclude certain tetrahedra that cannot tile space. ### Conclusion Through these methods, the author successfully classifies which tetrahedra with rational dihedral angles can tile space and overturns the converse of Debrunner's theorem. This result is of great significance for understanding the geometric properties of polyhedra and the tiling problem.
