Abstract:We prove that the deformation space of geodesic triangulations of a flat torus is homotopy equivalent to a torus. This solves an open problem proposed by Connelly et al. in 1983, in the case of flat tori. A key tool of the proof is a generalization of Tutte's embedding theorem for flat tori. When this paper is under preparation, Erickson and Lin proved a similar result, which works for all convex drawings.

Abstract:The notion of a spiral unfolding of a convex polyhedron, resulting by flattening a special type of Hamiltonian cut-path, is explored. The Platonic and Archimedian solids all have nonoverlapping spiral unfoldings, although among generic polyhedra, overlap is more the rule than the exception. The structure of spiral unfoldings is investigated, primarily by analyzing one particular class, the polyhedra of revolution.

Abstract:An example of reversible (or hinge inside-out transformable) figures is the Dudeney's Haberdasher's puzzle in which an equilateral triangle is dissected into four pieces, then hinged like a chain, and then is transformed into a square by rotating the hinged pieces. Furthermore, the entire boundary of each figure goes into the inside of the other figure and becomes the dissection lines of the other figure. Many intriguing results on reversibilities of figures have been found in prior research, but most of them are results on polygons. This paper generalizes those results to a wider range of general connected figures. It is shown that two nets obtained by cutting the surface of an arbitrary convex polyhedron along non-intersecting dissection trees are reversible. Moreover, a condition for two nets of an isotetrahedron to be both reversible and tessellative is given.

Abstract:We prove that, for any two polyhedral manifolds P, Q, there is a polyhedral manifold I such that P, I share a common unfolding and I, Q share a common unfolding. In other words, we can unfold P, refold (glue) that unfolding into I, unfold I, and then refold into Q. Furthermore, if P, Q are embedded in 3D, then I can be embedded in 3D (without self-intersection). These results generalize to n given manifolds P_1, P_2, ..., P_n; they all have a common unfolding with an intermediate manifold I. Allowing more than two unfold/refold steps, we obtain stronger results for two special cases: for doubly covered convex planar polygons, we achieve that all intermediate polyhedra are planar; and for tree-shaped polycubes, we achieve that all intermediate polyhedra are tree-shaped polycubes.

Overlapping Edge Unfoldings for Convex Regular-faced Polyhedra

Abstract:Herein, we discuss the existence of overlapping edge unfoldings for convex regular-faced polyhedra. Horiyama and Shoji showed that there are no overlapping edge unfoldings for all platonic solids and five of the Archimedean solids. The remaining five Archimedean solids were found to have edge unfoldings that overlap. In this study, we propose a method called rotational unfolding to find an overlapping edge unfolding of a polyhedron. We show that all the edge unfoldings of an icosidodecahedron, a rhombitruncated cuboctahedron, an n -gonal Archimedean prism ( 3≤n≤23 ), an m -gonal Archimedean antiprism ( 3≤m≤11 ), and 48 types of Johnson solids do not overlap. Our algorithm finds overlapping edge unfoldings for the snub cube, and 44 types of Johnson solids. We present analytic proof that an overlapping edge unfolding exists in an n -gonal Archimedean prism ( n≥24 ), and an m -gonal Archimedean antiprism ( m≥12 ). Our results prove the existence of overlapping edge unfoldings for convex regular-faced polyhedra.

Convexity and rigidity of hypersurfaces in Cartan-Hadamard manifolds

Abstract:We show that in Cartan-Hadamard manifolds $M^n$, $n\geq 3$, closed infinitesimally convex hypersurfaces $\Gamma$ bound convex flat regions, if curvature of $M^n$ vanishes on tangent planes of $\Gamma$. This encompasses Chern-Lashof-Sacksteder characterization of compact convex hypersurfaces in Euclidean space, and some results of Greene-Wu-Gromov on rigidity of Cartan-Hadamard manifolds. It follows that closed simply connected surfaces in $M^3$ with minimal total absolute curvature bound Euclidean convex bodies, as stated by M. Gromov in 1985. The proofs employ the Gauss-Codazzi equations, a generalization of Schur comparison theorem to CAT($k$) spaces, and other techniques from Alexandrov geometry outlined by A. Petrunin.

Abstract:We give an algorithm for finding conformal mappings onto the upper half-plane and conformal modules of some types of polygons. The polygons are obtained by stretching along the real axis polyominoes i.e., polygons which are connected unions of unit squares with vertices from the integer lattice. We consider the polyominoes of two types, so-called the $P$-pentomino and the $L$-tetromino. The proofs are based on the Riemann-Schwarz reflection principle and uniformization of compact simply-connected Riemann surfaces by rational functions.

Abstract:<p>We prove that any finite polyhedral manifold in 3D can be continuously flattened into 2D while preserving intrinsic distances and avoiding crossings, answering a 19-year-old open problem, if we extend standard folding models to allow for countably infinite creases. The most general cases previously known to be continuously flattenable were convex polyhedra and semi-orthogonal polyhedra. For non-orientable manifolds, even the existence of an instantaneous flattening (flat folded state) is a new result. Our solution extends a method for flattening semi-orthogonal polyhedra: slice the polyhedron along parallel planes and flatten the polyhedral strips between consecutive planes. We adapt this approach to arbitrary nonconvex polyhedra by generalizing strip flattening to nonorthogonal corners and slicing along a countably infinite number of parallel planes, with slices densely approaching every vertex of the manifold. We also show that the area of the polyhedron that needs to support moving creases (which are necessary for closed polyhedra by the Bellows Theorem) can be made arbitrarily small.</p>
Deformation of moduli spaces of meromorphic $G$-connections on $\mathbb{P}^{1}$ via unfolding of irregular singularities

Abstract:The unfolding of singular points of linear differential equations is a classical technique to study the properties of irregular singular points from those of regular singular points. In this paper, we propose a general framework for the unfolding of unramified irregular singularities of meromorphic $G$-connections on $\mathbb{P}^{1}$. As one of main results, we give a description for the unfolding of singularities of connections as the deformation of moduli spaces of them, and show that every moduli space of irreducible meromorphic $G$-connections with unramified irregular singularities on $\mathbb{P}^{1}$ has a deformation to a moduli space of irreducible Fuchsian $G$-connections on $\mathbb{P}^{1}$. Furthermore, we can consider the unfolding of additive Delinge-Simpson problems, namely, the unfolding of irregular singularities generates a family of additive Deligne-Simpson problems. Then as an application of our main result, we show that a Deligne-Simpson problem for $G$-connections with unramified irregular singularities has a solution if and only if every other unfolded Deligne-Simpson problem simultaneously has a solution. Also we give a combinatorial and diagrammatic description of the unfolding of irregular singularities via spectral types and unfolding diagrams, and then consider a conjecture proposed by Oshima which asks the existence of irreducible $G$-connections realizing the given spectral types and their unfolding. Our main result gives an affirmative answer of this conjecture.

Abstract:Polyfold theory was developed by Hofer-Wysocki-Zehnder by finding commonalities in the analytic framework for a variety of geometric elliptic PDEs, in particular moduli spaces of pseudoholomorphic curves. It aims to systematically address the common difficulties of compactification and transversality with a new notion of smoothness on Banach spaces, new local models for differential geometry, and a nonlinear Fredholm theory in the new context. We shine meta-mathematical light on the bigger picture and core ideas of this theory. In addition, we compiled and condensed the core definitions and theorems of polyfold theory into a streamlined exposition, and outline their application at the example of Morse theory.

On Gromov's rigidity theorem for polytopes with acute angles

Abstract:In his Four Lectures, Gromov conjectured a scalar curvature extremality property of convex polytopes. Moreover, Gromov outlined a proof of the conjecture in the special case when the dihedral angles are acute. Gromov's argument relies on Dirac operator techniques together with a smoothing construction. In this paper, we give the details of the smoothing construction, thereby providing a detailed proof of Gromov's theorem. The proof of the rigidity statement also uses a deep estimate due to Fefferman and Phong.

Abstract:Let $P$ be a convex polyhedron in $\mathbb{R}^3$. The skeleton of $P$ is the graph whose vertices and edges are the vertices and edges of $P$, respectively. We prove that, if these vertices are on the unit-sphere, the skeleton is a $(0.999 \cdot \pi)$-spanner. If the vertices are very close to this sphere, then the skeleton is not necessarily a spanner. For the case when the boundary of $P$ is between two concentric spheres of radii $1$ and $R>1$, and the angles in all faces are at least $\theta$, we prove that the skeleton is a $t$-spanner, where $t$ depends only on $R$ and $\theta$. One of the ingredients in the proof is a tight upper bound on the geometric dilation of a convex cycle that is contained in an annulus.

Abstract:Recently, it has been proven that a tensegrity framework that arises from coning the one-skeleton of a convex polytope is rigid. Since such frameworks are not always infinitesimally rigid, this leaves open the question as to whether they are at least prestress stable. We prove here that this holds subject to an intriguing new conjecture about coned polytope frameworks, that we call the stress-flex conjecture. Multiple numerical experiments suggest that this conjecture is true, and most surprisingly, seems to hold even beyond convexity and also for higher genus~polytopes.

Abstract:We address a conjecture of Mirzakhani about the statistical behavior of certain expanding families of ``twist tori'' in the moduli space of hyperbolic surfaces, showing that they equidistribute to a certain Lebesgue-class measure along almost all sequences. We also identify a number of other expanding families of twist tori whose limiting distributions are mutually singular to Lebesgue.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the non-singular extension problem of horizontal stable fold maps from closed oriented surfaces into $\mathbb{R}^{2}$. The problem asks, given a horizontal stable fold map $f\colon M\to\mathbb{R}^{2}$ on a closed oriented surface $M$, under what conditions there exist a compact oriented 3-dimensional manifold $N$ with $\partial N = M$ and a submersion $F\colon N \to\mathbb{R}^{2}$ such that $F|_{\partial N}=f$. As a main theorem, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a non-singular extension of a horizontal stable fold map with certain properties, assuming a submersion on a collar neighborhood is given.

Unfolding Convex Polyhedra via Radially Monotone Cut Trees

Abstract:A notion of "radially monotone" cut paths is introduced as an effective choice for finding a non-overlapping edge-unfolding of a convex polyhedron. These paths have the property that the two sides of the cut avoid overlap locally as the cut is infinitesimally opened by the curvature at the vertices along the path. It is shown that a class of planar, triangulated convex domains always have a radially monotone spanning forest, a forest that can be found by an essentially greedy algorithm. This algorithm can be mimicked in 3D and applied to polyhedra inscribed in a sphere. Although the algorithm does not provably find a radially monotone cut tree, it in fact does find such a tree with high frequency, and after cutting unfolds without overlap. This performance of a greedy algorithm leads to the conjecture that spherical polyhedra always have a radially monotone cut tree and unfold without overlap.

Abstract:We prove that the knots and links in the infinite set of $3$-highly twisted $2m$-plats, with $m \geq 2$, are all hyperbolic. This should be compared with a result of Futer-Purcell for $6$-highly twisted diagrams. While their proof uses geometric methods our proof is achieved by showing that the complements of such knots or links are unannular and atoroidal. This is done by using a new approach involving an Euler characteristic argument.
