Abstract:We prove that two polygons $A$ and $B$ have a reversible hinged dissection (a chain hinged dissection that reverses inside and outside boundaries when folding between $A$ and $B$) if and only if $A$ and $B$ are two noncrossing nets of a common polyhedron. Furthermore, monotone reversible hinged dissections (where all hinges rotate in the same direction when changing from $A$ to $B$) correspond exactly to noncrossing nets of a common convex polyhedron. By envelope/parcel magic, it becomes easy to design many hinged dissections.

Abstract: We investigate the collapsing geometry of hyperk\"ahler 4-manifolds. As applications we prove two well-known conjectures in the field. (1) Any collapsed limit of unit-diameter hyperk\"ahler metrics on the K3 manifold is isometric to one of the following: the quotient of a flat 3-torus by an involution, a singular special K\"ahler metric on the 2-sphere, or the unit interval. (2) Any complete hyperk\"ahler 4-manifold with finite energy (i.e., gravitational instanton) is asymptotic to a model end at infinity.

Abstract:It is conjectured that all decomposable (i.e. interior can be triangulated without adding new vertices) polyhedra with vertices in convex position are infinitesimally rigid and only recently has it been shown that this is indeed true under an additional assumption of codecomposability (i.e. the interior of the difference between the convex hull and the polyhedron itself can be triangulated without adding new vertices). One major set of tools for studying infinitesimal rigidity happens to be throughout the (negative) Hessian $M_T$ of the discrete Hilbert-Einstein functional. Besides its theoretical importance, it provides the necessary machinery to tackle the problem experimentally. To search for potential counterexamples to the conjecture, one constructs an explicit family of so-called $T$-polyhedra, all of which are weakly convex and decomposable, while being non-codecomposable. Since infinitesimal rigidity is equivalent to a non-degenerate $M_T$, one can let Mathematica search for the eigenvalues of $M_T$ and gather experimental evidence that such a flexible, weakly convex and decomposable $T$-polyhedron may not exist.

Reversible Nets of Polyhedra

Abstract:An example of reversible (or hinge inside-out transformable) figures is the Dudeney's Haberdasher's puzzle in which an equilateral triangle is dissected into four pieces, then hinged like a chain, and then is transformed into a square by rotating the hinged pieces. Furthermore, the entire boundary of each figure goes into the inside of the other figure and becomes the dissection lines of the other figure. Many intriguing results on reversibilities of figures have been found in prior research, but most of them are results on polygons. This paper generalizes those results to a wider range of general connected figures. It is shown that two nets obtained by cutting the surface of an arbitrary convex polyhedron along non-intersecting dissection trees are reversible. Moreover, a condition for two nets of an isotetrahedron to be both reversible and tessellative is given.

On inside-out Dissections of Polygons and Polyhedra

Abstract:In this work we study inside-out dissections of polygons and polyhedra. We first show that an arbitrary polygon can be inside-out dissected with $2n+1$ pieces, thereby improving the best previous upper bound of $4(n-2)$ pieces. Additionally, we establish that a regular polygon can be inside-out dissected with at most $6$ pieces. Lastly, we prove that any polyhedron that can be decomposed into finitely many regular tetrahedra and octahedra can be inside-out dissected.

Abstract:Simple polyhedra are $2$-dimensional polyhedra and important objects in low-dimensional geometry and in the applications of {\it fold} maps, defined as smooth maps regarded as higher dimensional variants of Morse functions. For example, they are locally so-called {\it Reeb spaces} of (so-called stable) fold maps into the plane and represent the manifolds compactly. The Reeb space of a fold map is the space of all connected components of preimages of it and is a polyhedron whose dimension is same as that of the manifold of the target. Is a given simple polyhedron homeomorphic to the Reeb space of a suitable stable fold map? What are their global topologies like? Previously the author has challenged this for a specific case and presented fundamental construction and topological properties of the polyhedra as new results. The present paper extends some of these works and results and present results of new types.

Abstract:We prove that, for any two polyhedral manifolds P, Q, there is a polyhedral manifold I such that P, I share a common unfolding and I, Q share a common unfolding. In other words, we can unfold P, refold (glue) that unfolding into I, unfold I, and then refold into Q. Furthermore, if P, Q are embedded in 3D, then I can be embedded in 3D (without self-intersection). These results generalize to n given manifolds P_1, P_2, ..., P_n; they all have a common unfolding with an intermediate manifold I. Allowing more than two unfold/refold steps, we obtain stronger results for two special cases: for doubly covered convex planar polygons, we achieve that all intermediate polyhedra are planar; and for tree-shaped polycubes, we achieve that all intermediate polyhedra are tree-shaped polycubes.

Geometric and topological rigidity of pinched submanifolds

Abstract:We investigate the geometry and topology of compact submanifolds of arbitrary codimension in space forms satisfying a certain pinching condition involving the length of the second fundamental form and the mean curvature. We prove that this pinching condition either forces homology to vanish in a range of intermediate dimensions, or completely determines the submanifold up to congruence. The results are sharp and extend previous results due to several authors without imposing any further assumption on the mean curvature.

Hinged Dissections Exist

Abstract:We prove that any finite collection of polygons of equal area has a common hinged dissection. That is, for any such collection of polygons there exists a chain of polygons hinged at vertices that can be folded in the plane continuously without self-intersection to form any polygon in the collection. This result settles the open problem about the existence of hinged dissections between pairs of polygons that goes back implicitly to 1864 and has been studied extensively in the past ten years. Our result generalizes and indeed builds upon the result from 1814 that polygons have common dissections (without hinges). We also extend our common dissection result to edge-hinged dissections of solid 3D polyhedra that have a common (unhinged) dissection, as determined by Dehn's 1900 solution to Hilbert's Third Problem. Our proofs are constructive, giving explicit algorithms in all cases. For a constant number of planar polygons, both the number of pieces and running time required by our construction are pseudopolynomial. This bound is the best possible, even for unhinged dissections. Hinged dissections have possible applications to reconfigurable robotics, programmable matter, and nanomanufacturing.

Abstract:We introduce a deformed product construction for simple polytopes in terms of lower-triangular block matrix representations. We further show how Gale duality can be employed for the construction and the analysis of deformed products such that specified faces (e.g., all the k-faces) are “strictly preserved” under projection.Thus, starting from an arbitrary neighborly simplicial (d−2)-polytope Q on n−1 vertices, we construct a deformed n-cube, whose projection to the last d coordinates yields a neighborly cubical d-polytope. As an extension of the cubical case, we construct matrix representations of deformed products of (even) polygons (DPPs) which have a projection to d-space that retains the complete $$(\lfloor\tfrac{d}{2}\rfloor-1)$$-skeleton.In both cases the combinatorial structure of the images under projection is determined by the neighborly simplicial polytope Q: Our analysis provides explicit combinatorial descriptions. This yields a multitude of combinatorially different neighborly cubical polytopes and DPPs.As a special case, we obtain simplified descriptions of the neighborly cubical polytopes of Joswig and Ziegler (Discrete Comput. Geom. 24:325–344, 2000) as well as of the projected deformed products of polygons announced by Ziegler (Electron. Res. Announc. Am. Math. Soc. 10:122–134, 2004), a family of 4-polytopes whose “fatness” gets arbitrarily close to 9.

Collapsing regular Riemannian foliations with flat leaves

Abstract:We present how to collapse a manifold equipped with a closed flat regular Riemannian foliation with leaves of positive dimension on a compact manifold, while keeping the sectional curvature uniformly bounded from above and below. From this deformation, we show that a closed flat regular Riemannian foliation with leaves of positive dimension on a compact simply-connected manifold is given by torus actions. This gives a geometric characterization of aspherical regular Riemannian foliations given by torus actions.

Abstract:In the present paper, we study partial collapsing degeneration of Hamiltonian-perturbed Floer trajectories for an adiabatic ε -family and its reversal adiabatic gluing, as the prototype of the partial collapsing degeneration of 2-dimensional (perturbed) J -holomorphic maps to 1-dimensional gradient segments. We consider the case when the Floer equations are S 1 -invariant on parts of their domains whose adiabatic limit has positive length as ε → 0, which we call thimble-flow-thimble configurations. The main gluing theorem we prove also applies to the case with Lagrangian boundaries such as in the problem of recovering holomorphic disks out of pearly configuration. In particular, our gluing theorem gives rise to a new direct proof of the chain isomorphism property between the Morse–Bott version of Lagrangian intersection Floer complex of L by Fukaya–Oh–Ohta–Ono and the pearly complex of L Lalonde and Biran–Cornea. It also provides another proof of the present authors' earlier proof of the isomorphism property of the PSS map without involving the target rescaling and the scale-dependent gluing.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a polyptych lattice, which encodes a collection of lattices related by piecewise linear bijections. We initiate a study of the new theory of convex geometry and polytopes associated to polyptych lattices. In certain situations, such a polytope associated to a polyptych lattice encodes a compactification of an affine variety whose coordinate ring can be equipped with a valuation into a certain semialgebra associated to the polyptych lattice. We show that aspects of the geometry of the compactification can be understood combinatorially; for instance, under some hypotheses, the resulting compactifications are arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay, and have finitely generated class group and finitely generated Cox rings.

Abstract:<p>We prove that any finite polyhedral manifold in 3D can be continuously flattened into 2D while preserving intrinsic distances and avoiding crossings, answering a 19-year-old open problem, if we extend standard folding models to allow for countably infinite creases. The most general cases previously known to be continuously flattenable were convex polyhedra and semi-orthogonal polyhedra. For non-orientable manifolds, even the existence of an instantaneous flattening (flat folded state) is a new result. Our solution extends a method for flattening semi-orthogonal polyhedra: slice the polyhedron along parallel planes and flatten the polyhedral strips between consecutive planes. We adapt this approach to arbitrary nonconvex polyhedra by generalizing strip flattening to nonorthogonal corners and slicing along a countably infinite number of parallel planes, with slices densely approaching every vertex of the manifold. We also show that the area of the polyhedron that needs to support moving creases (which are necessary for closed polyhedra by the Bellows Theorem) can be made arbitrarily small.</p>
The polyhedral decomposition of cusped hyperbolic $n$-manifolds with totally geodesic boundary

Abstract:Let $M$ be a volume finite non-compact complete hyperbolic $n$-manifold with totally geodesic boundary. We show that there exists a polyhedral decomposition of $M$ such that each cell is either an ideal polyhedron or a partially truncated polyhedron with exactly one truncated face. This result parallels Epstein-Penner's ideal decomposition \cite{EP} for cusped hyperbolic manifolds and Kojima's truncated polyhedron decomposition \cite{Kojima} for compact hyperbolic manifolds with totally geodesic boundary. We take two different approaches to demonstrate the main result in this paper. We also show that the number of polyhedral decompositions of $M$ is finite.

Abstract:This article mainly concerns retracts in polydisk, analytic varieties with the H ∞ -extension property and the three-point Pick problem on 𝔻^3 . Arising in the study of Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation on the bidisk, Agler and McCarthy recently discovered a remarkable theorem which characterizes subsets in the bidisk with the polynomial extension property, and in this case, these subsets are retracts. To study H ∞ -extensions of holomorphic functions from subvarieties of polydisk, one naturally is concerned with retracts in polydisk. Under certain mild assumptions, it is shown that subvarieties with H ∞ -extension property are exactly retracts. Furthermore, we apply our argument to determine those retracts whose retractions are unique. In particular, a retract in 𝔻^2 having at least two different retractions is exactly a balanced disk. As an application, we give a sufficient condition of the uniqueness of the solution for the three-point Pick problem on 𝔻^3 .

Abstract:All the possibilities are first examined and identified for a given large incompressible deformation to be decomposed into three perpendicular simple shears preceded or followed by a rotation. The perpendicular simple shears involved in this decomposition has the characteristic that their product is characterized by a triangular matrix with unit diagonal components. The decomposition of a large incompressible deformation is then shown to include as a particular case the one of a small incompressible deformation into three perpendicular simple shears, in the sense that the former can be used to deduce the latter.

Abstract:A conjecture of Kalai asserts that for $d\geq 4$, the affine type of a prime simplicial $d$-polytope $P$ can be reconstructed from the space of affine $2$-stresses of $P$. We prove this conjecture for all $d\geq 5$. We also prove the following generalization: for all pairs $(i,d)$ with $2\leq i\leq \lceil \frac d 2\rceil-1$, the affine type of a simplicial $d$-polytope $P$ that has no missing faces of dimension $\geq d-i+1$ can be reconstructed from the space of affine $i$-stresses of $P$. A consequence of our proofs is a strengthening of the Generalized Lower Bound Theorem: it was proved by Nagel that for any simplicial $(d-1)$-sphere $\Delta$ and $1\leq k\leq \lceil\frac{d}{2}\rceil-1$, $g_k(\Delta)$ is at least as large as the number of missing $(d-k)$-faces of $\Delta$; here we show that, for $1\leq k\leq \lfloor\frac{d}{2}\rfloor-1$, equality holds if and only if $\Delta$ is $k$-stacked. Finally, we show that for $d\geq 4$, any simplicial $d$-polytope $P$ that has no missing faces of dimension $\geq d-1$ is redundantly rigid, that is, for each edge $e$ of $P$, there exists an affine $2$-stress on $P$ with a non-zero value on $e$.

Boundary rigidity of 3D CAT(0) cube complexes

Abstract:The boundary rigidity problem is a classical question from Riemannian geometry: if $(M, g)$ is a Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary, is the geometry of $M$ determined up to isometry by the metric $d_g$ induced on the boundary $\partial M$? In this paper, we consider a discrete version of this problem: can we determine the combinatorial type of a finite cube complex from its boundary distances? As in the continuous case, reconstruction is not possible in general, but one expects a positive answer under suitable contractibility and non-positive curvature conditions. Indeed, in two dimensions Haslegrave gave a positive answer to this question when the complex is a finite quadrangulation of the disc with no internal vertices of degree less than $4$. We prove a $3$-dimensional generalisation of this result: the combinatorial type of a finite CAT(0) cube complex with an embedding in $\mathbb{R}^3$ can be reconstructed from its boundary distances. Additionally, we prove a direct strengthening of Haslegrave's result: the combinatorial type of any finite 2-dimensional CAT(0) cube complex can be reconstructed from its boundary distances.
