Abstract:The residual strength of a delaminated skin is critical for the safety of aircraft made of composite materials. This paper presents a numerical investigation of the compressive residual strengths of quasi-isotropic carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic laminates with delamination due to low-velocity impact (LVI). A series of LVI tests were conducted under six different conditions, and the extent of the damage was quantified using non-destructive inspections. Subsequently, the compressive residual strengths after impact were tested. To estimate the residual strengths numerically, a finite element strategy incorporating three circular delamination models was employed. Two types of the multiple circular delamination models and one full circular delamination model were developed with the damage sizes determined based on ultrasonic C-scan images. Through a post-buckling analysis, the buckling angles, damage shapes, and buckling modes were examined. The predicted residual strengths of the presented models were in good agreement with the test results. This study can serve as the basis for effective numerical modeling of low-velocity impact damage and its assessment that should be considered to ensure the structural integrity and safety of composite aircraft.
