Abstract:Human cooperation can be influenced by other human behaviors and recent years have witnessed the flourishing of studying the coevolution of cooperation and punishment, yet the common behavior of charity is seldom considered in game-theoretical models. In this article, we investigate the coevolution of altruistic cooperation and egalitarian charity in spatial public goods game, by considering charity as the behavior of reducing inter-individual payoff differences. Our model is that, in each generation of the evolution, individuals play games first and accumulate payoff benefits, and then each egalitarian makes a charity donation by payoff transfer in its neighborhood. To study the individual-level evolutionary dynamics, we adopt different strategy update rules and investigate their effects on charity and cooperation. These rules can be classified into two global rules: random selection rule in which individuals randomly update strategies, and threshold selection rule where only those with payoffs below a threshold update strategies. Simulation results show that random selection enhances the cooperation level, while threshold selection lowers the threshold of the multiplication factor to maintain cooperation. When charity is considered, it is incapable in promoting cooperation under random selection, whereas it promotes cooperation under threshold selection. Interestingly, the evolution of charity strongly depends on the dispersion of payoff acquisitions of the population, which agrees with previous results. Our work may shed light on understanding human egalitarianism.

Abstract:In this study, we propose a new second-order reputation evaluation rule in the spatial public goods games, in which both actions of the individual and his neighbors with the worst reputation are taken into account. Considering the incomplete accessibility of individual reputation information, we introduce a reputation reasoning ability parameter and study the effect of reputation on individual strategy updating from the perspective of social learning, in which individuals with large reputation reasoning abilities are more likely to choose neighbors with a high reputation for strategy imitation. Three cases where the reputation reasoning ability parameter is homogeneous, endogenous, and exogenous are considered and compared. From simulation results, we find that high reputation reasoning ability can promote cooperation in all cases. Specifically, in the homogeneous reputation reasoning ability situation, compared with the first-order rules, the second-order information on reputation inhibits cooperation rather than promotes it and a significant magnitude of reputation change can also inhibit cooperation. In endogenous situations where reasoning ability is negatively correlated with individual reputation, large correlation coefficients can inhibit cooperation. In exogenous situations of the normal distribution, a high mean of reputation reasoning ability boosts cooperation, but when the variance is sufficiently large, the level of cooperation will no longer be affected. In scenarios of the power law distribution, the cooperation level improves with an increase in the power index. These findings further expand our understanding of high-order reputation evaluation rules in multiplayer games and incomplete reputation information environment on the evolution of cooperation from the perspective of reputation-dependent social learning.

Abstract:Abstract Heterogeneity and difference in the dynamics of individual reputation may strongly affect learning behavior, and hence also the evolution of cooperation within a population. Motivated by this, we propose here an evolutionary spatial multigames model, wherein the reputation of an individual increases if they cooperate and decreases if they defect. After the payoffs are determined, individuals with a higher reputation will be more likely to act as strategy sources for other individuals. We perform systematic Monte Carlo simulations to determine the transitions between cooperation and defection, as well as the parameter regions of strategic coexistence. We show that preferential learning, based on dynamic reputation changes, strongly promotes cooperation regardless of the interaction network’s structure. The mechanism responsible for more favorable evolutionary outcomes is enhanced network reciprocity, which leads to more compact cooperator clusters and thus to more robust spatiotemporal dynamics that are resilient to invading defectors. Our research may improve the understanding of selection patterns that favor the emergence and persistence of cooperative behavior.

Abstract:The progression of game theory from classical to evolutionary and spatial games provided a powerful means to study cooperation, and enabled a better understanding of general cooperation-promoting mechanisms. However, current standard models assume that at any given point players must choose either cooperation or defection, meaning that regardless of the spatial structure in which they exist, they cannot differentiate between their neighbours and adjust their behaviour accordingly. This is at odds with interactions among organisms in nature who are well capable of behaving differently towards different members of their communities. We account for this natural fact by introducing a new type of player—dubbed link players—who can adjust their behaviour to each individual neighbour. This is in contrast to more common node players whose behaviour affects all neighbours in the same way. We proceed to study cooperation in pure and mixed populations, showing that cooperation peaks at moderately low densities of link players. In such conditions, players naturally specialize in different roles. Node players tend to be either cooperators or defectors, while link players form social insulation between cooperative and defecting clusters by acting both as cooperators and defectors. Such fairly complex processes emerging from a simple model reflect some of the complexities observed in experimental studies on social behaviour in microbes and pave a way for the development of richer game models.
The influence of environment-based reputation on cooperation in spatial prisoner's dilemma game

Abstract:Abstract Research has shown that reputation mechanism can be effective in facilitating the generation and maintenance of cooperation in social dilemmas. In the traditional reputation mechanism, the amount of change in reputation is fixed. However, in real life, people's impression scores of a player are often influenced by the environment in which he lives. In other words, we prefer to celebrate the cooperative heroes who are surrounded by defectors and spurn the defectors who are hidden among the many cooperators. Thus, this paper proposes an environment-based reputation model, in which the increment of a player's reputation will be influenced by the local and global environment. The results of the research indicate that the greater the intensity of the environmental influence, the more it promotes the evolution of cooperation. It is worth noting that the local and global environmental focus shows peculiarities. Focusing on the global environment can improve the fraction of cooperators at low defection temptations while focusing on the local environment will facilitate cooperators’ survival at higher defection temptations.

Abstract:Indirect reciprocity is a fascinating topic in the field of social cooperation. In this paper, we propose a novel updating strategy based on the critical reputation-aware calculation. The joint of reputation allows players to make decisions not only on current payoffs but also from a third party, which improves the status of cooperators in the prisoner's dilemma game and provides a possibility for surviving. Experiments show that the discrepancies in initial fitness caused by reputation will support cooperators in occupying a high proportion in communities. Interestingly, we find that the massive scale of reputation fluctuation helps to enhance the cooperative effect, and newly name this character as "quasi-time lag". The simulations show that the promotion of our proposed mechanism is effective and robust on different network topologies. This work provides a new perspective for the study of the cooperative game.

Abstract:Individuals with higher reputation are able to spread their social strategies easily. At the same time, one’s reputation is changing according to his previous behaviors, which leads to completely different teaching abilities for players. To explore the effect of the teaching ability influenced by reputation, we consider a coevolutionary model in which the reputation score affects the updating rule in spatial evolutionary games. More precisely, the updating probability becomes bigger if his/her partner has a positive reputation. Otherwise, the updating probability becomes smaller. This simple design describes the influence of teaching ability on strategy adoption effectively. Numerical results focus on the proportion of cooperation under different levels of the amplitude of change of reputation and the range of reputation. For this dynamics, the fraction of cooperators presents a growth trend within a wide range of parameters. In addition, to validate the generality of this mechanism, we also employ the snowdrift game. Moreover, the evolution of cooperation on Erdős-Rényi random graph is studied for the prisoner’s dilemma game. Our results may be conducive to understanding the emergence and sustainability of cooperation during the strategy adoptions in reality.

Abstract:In practice, there exists numerous examples indicating the phenomenon that individuals are inclined to employ different strategies when interacting with the others. This is incurred by the fact that individuals are able to adjust their strategies adaptively under different interacting environments. Scholars have devoted their efforts to this topic; nevertheless, the impact of diverse interactions on cooperation still needs to be further explored. In this manuscript, we propose a mechanism aiming to investigate the co-evolution of personal reputation and strategy under a general framework of interactive diversity (being referred to as edge-strategy for simplicity). Numerous simulations are conducted with sufficient analyses of the obtained results being provided. As illustrated by the evolutionary dynamics, we find that there exists an optimal reputation value which can promote the frequency of cooperation by a large extent. Furthermore, we can clearly conclude that the consideration of interaction diversity is able to ensure the maintenance of cooperation even if the temptation to adopt antisocial behavior is relatively large. Aiming to understand the phenomenon better, we also quantitatively analyze the results by investigating the statistics of interaction chain, cluster size and other microscopic information. Overall, we hope the findings here can provide some interesting insights in solving social dilemmas.

Abstract:In the complex human social environment, reputation plays an important role in interpersonal communication. Normally, individuals pay attention to their neighbors' current and historical reputations during strategy learning, and the variation of individual reputation over time is often non-uniform. This paper proposes a new spatial public goods game model that involves current and historical reputation. An exponential function of the rounds in which the individual continuously maintains the cooperative or defective strategy unchanged is defined to reflect the change of the individual reputation. And two discount coefficients involving five parameters are introduced to the imitation probability of strategy learning. Simulation results indicate that high sensitivities of individuals to her/his own reputation, to the reputation of her/his neighbors, and to changes in neighbors' historical reputations are all beneficial for the cooperative behavior of the system. And individual behavior of paying attention to changes in neighbors' historical reputation is also beneficial for the cooperation, but attention to more historical reputation changes in neighbors does not further promote cooperative behavior. The sensitivity of the population to individual historical information about strategy has little impact on the cooperative behavior of the system.

Abstract:We investigate the cooperation dynamics attributed to the interplay between the evolution of individual strategies and evolution of individual partnerships. We focus on the effect of reputation on an individual's partner-switching process. We assume that individuals can either change their strategies by imitating their partners or adjust their partnerships based on local information about reputations. We manipulate the partner switching in two ways; that is, individuals can switch from the lowest reputation partners, either to their partners' partners who have the highest reputation (i.e., ordering in partnership) or to others randomly chosen from the entire population (i.e., randomness in partnership). We show that when individuals are able to alter their behavioral strategies and their social interaction partnerships on the basis of reputation, cooperation can prevail. We find that the larger temptation to defect and the denser the partner network, the more frequently individuals need to shift their partnerships in order for cooperation to thrive. Furthermore, an increasing tendency of switching to partners' partners is more likely to lead to a higher level of cooperation. We show that when reputation is absent in such partner-switching processes, cooperation is much less favored than that of the reputation involved. Moreover, we investigate the effect of discounting an individual's reputation on the evolution of cooperation. Our results highlight the importance of the consideration of reputation (indirect reciprocity) on the promotion of cooperation when individuals can adjust their partnerships.

Abstract:Reputation and reciprocity are key mechanisms for cooperation in human societies, often going hand in hand to favor prosocial behavior over selfish actions. Here we review recent researches at the interface of physics and evolutionary game theory that explored these two mechanisms. We focus on image scoring as the bearer of reputation, as well as on various types of reciprocity, including direct, indirect, and network reciprocity. We review different definitions of reputation and reciprocity dynamics, and we show how these affect the evolution of cooperation in social dilemmas. We consider first-order, second-order, as well as higher-order models in well-mixed and structured populations, and we review experimental works that support and inform the results of mathematical modeling and simulations. We also provide a synthesis of the reviewed researches along with an outlook in terms of six directions that seem particularly promising to explore in the future.

Abstract:At present, the reputation evaluation problem caused by resource constraints significantly influences group cooperation behavior, and cannot be considered and solved in the traditional game model. In this paper, we consider the evolutionary behavior of a spatial public goods game with constraints on second-order reputation evaluation, which can be characterized by an evaluation variable. First, to achieve constraints on high-reputation individuals, an adaptive threshold adjustment function is introduced to dynamically regulate the individual's image, which is based on the evaluation variable. We discuss the impact of evaluation constraints on group evolutionary behavior under four classical second-order updating rules: shunning, stern judging, simple standing, and image scoring. For shunning and stern judging, the appropriate evaluation constraint maximizes the cooperation level; for the other rules, high cooperative behavior is promoted by a small constraint value. Finally, we also analyze the evolutionary behavior of some mechanisms in two other networks: random and small-world networks. In summary, the current results provide an opportunity to study the evolution of human behavior in a competitive situation and develop an effective mechanism to foster collective cooperation.

Abstract:The influence of reputation and emotions on the evolution of cooperation is acknowledged, but current research predominantly focuses on one aspect. This paper integrates both reputation and emotions to examine their collective impacts on the evolution of cooperation. Initially, we define the expression of individual emotional profiles and emotional reputation. Subsequently, we consider the combined effects of the emotional reputation of an individual's neighbors and their interactive individuals on emotional responses. Further, an emotional transfer activation parameter is introduced. Lastly, we construct an algorithm for the evolutionary game of emotions. Simulation results demonstrate that considering emotional reputation is more conducive to the cooperation. The emotional reputation of interacting individuals has a greater influence on the development of positive emotions and the establishment of collaboration within groups than that of neighboring environments. In heterogeneous networks, considering the emotional reputation of neighbors increases the probability of "free-riding" by unfriendly people. When game parameters are set in favor of betrayal and negative emotions, the system evolves to produce "cautious and friendly people". Individuals with stable emotions, high sympathy for the weak, and high respect for the strong dominate the group. Furthermore, the individuals' emotional expression towards both the weak and the strong exhibits an evolutionary synchronicity. Compared to other network structures, scale-free networks are more conducive to the evolutionary dominance of emotions of high respect for the strong.

Abstract:Reputation plays a crucial role in social interactions by affecting the fitness of individuals during an evolutionary process. Previous works have extensively studied the result of imitation dynamics without focusing on potential irrational choices in strategy updates. We now fill this gap and explore the consequence of such kind of randomness, or one may interpret it as an autonomous thinking. In particular, we study how this extended dynamics alters the evolution of cooperation when individual reputation is directly linked to collected payoff, hence providing a general fitness function. For a broadly valid conclusion, our spatial populations cover different types of interaction topologies, including lattices, small-world and scale-free graphs. By means of intensive simulations we can detect substantial increase in cooperation level that shows a reasonable stability in the presence of a notable strategy mutation.

Abstract:How cooperation emerges and is stabilized has been a puzzling problem to biologists and sociologists since Darwin. One of the possible answers to this problem lies in the mobility patterns. These mobility patterns in previous works are either random-like or driven by payoff-related properties such as fitness, aspiration, or expectation. Here we address another force which drives us to move from place to place: reputation. To this end, we propose a reputation-based model to explore the effect of migration on cooperation in the contest of the prisoner's dilemma. In this model, individuals earn their reputation scores through previous cooperative behaviors. An individual tends to migrate to a new place if he has a neighborhood of low reputation. We show that cooperation is promoted for relatively large population density and not very large temptation to defect. A higher mobility sensitivity to reputation is always better for cooperation. A longer reputation memory favors cooperation, provided that the corresponding mobility sensitivity to reputation is strong enough. The microscopic perception of the effect of this mechanism is also given. Our results may shed some light on the role played by migration in the emergence and persistence of cooperation.
Reputation-Based Conditional Interaction Supports Cooperation in Well-Mixed Prisoner’s Dilemmas

Abstract:In the well-mixed prisoner's dilemma game, individuals are typically assumed to have no choice about whether to interact with other individuals in the population. In this paper, we instead consider reputation-based conditional interaction and its consequences for the evolution of cooperation. Each individual has a tolerance range, and only interacts with other individuals whose reputation lies within its tolerance range in a chosen sample of the population. Reputation contains information about the number of interaction partners an individual has just cooperated with. We find that the introduction of conditional interaction promotes cooperation in well-mixed populations, and there exist moderate tolerance ranges for which this effect is maximized. For a given tolerance range, there is a critical cost-to-benefit ratio below which cooperation can be promoted. Interestingly, we find that if cooperation evolves, different cooperators' interaction clusters are typically maintained in the population, each around a different reputation level. We further investigate some properties of these cooperators' clusters. Moreover, we examine the effects of the sample number on the evolution of cooperation. Our results highlight the importance of the detailed consideration of modes of interaction for the evolution of cooperation in well-mixed populations.

Abstract:In evolutionary games, many mechanisms have been proposed to promote cooperation between individuals and the heterogeneity of these mechanisms has been widely investigated. However, the joint effects and heterogeneity of multiple mechanisms have not been adequately studied. Here, we introduce different neighborhoods and global tags to denote different reputation and conformity types, respectively, and discuss the joint effects and heterogeneity of reputation and conformity mechanisms on promoting cooperation in the prisoner's dilemma game. Simulation results show that the joint effects of reputation and conformity mechanisms can promote cooperation effectively and the heterogeneity of these two mechanisms promotes cooperation only in certain circumstances.
Reputation-based discount effect in imitation on the evolution of cooperation in spatial public goods games

Abstract:<p>Reputation provides important information to society by recording the historical behavior of individuals. The introduction of reputation helps explain the cooperation phenomenon in human society to some extent. However, in previous explanation models, the benefits of a good reputation bring to individuals are generally described from the perspective of future payoffs they can obtain. In reality, the reputation system also affects the process of mutual imitation among individuals. For instance, the willingness of an individual with a high reputation learning from an individual with a low reputation can be greatly discounted. As such, this paper considers the reputation-based discount effect in imitation and extends the research on reputation from the perspective of imitation learning. Specifically, two situations of discount effect are considered. One is based on relative reputation difference, that is, if the reputation of an individual being imitated is too low compared to the strategy updater and the difference between which exceeds a threshold, the probability of imitation will be discounted. The other is based on absolute reputation difference, that is, if the absolute reputation of an individual being imitated falls below a threshold, the probability of imitation will be discounted. The effect of different thresholds and discount parameters on the evolution of cooperation in spatial public goods games is investigated, respectively, in both situations. Simulation results show that the reputation-based discount effect in mutual imitation plays an important role in the emergence and maintenance of cooperative behavior. Especially, low threshold differences for reputation and high discounts can greatly expand the range of parameters in which cooperation emerges. Moreover, compared with the relative reputation situation, the discount effect based on the absolute reputation is more conducive to the evolution of cooperation.</p>
Cooperation dynamics of reputation-based manhattan distance social circle in spatial prisoner's dilemma game in evolutionary game theory

Abstract:Inspired by the complex interplay between reputation and social proximity, we propose a novel model called the Manhattan distance reputation circle, integrating nonlinear reputation mechanisms and interaction range within the spatial prisoner's dilemma game. In this model, the average reputation of neighbors sharing the same strategy within a specific Manhattan distance is incorporated into the central node's strategy update rule. Two rules are introduced to evaluate average reputation: rule A employs the standard averaging method, while rule B applies a distance-based decay, introducing a nonlinear weighting to the reputation, giving more influence to closer neighbors. Monte Carlo simulations reveal that the proposed model exhibits nonlinear dynamics that promote the emergence of cooperative strategies. Specifically, greater interaction range and reputation adjustment values enhance cooperation, although the impact of interaction range plateaus beyond a certain threshold. While both rules foster cooperation, rule B's nonlinear reputation decay reduces the fluctuations in cooperation seen in rule A as α increases under high introduction rates in the model.
