Abstract:Power distribution of progressive power lenses provides usable regions based on power distribution analysis. However, recent studies demonstrated that these regions are not always used for certain tasks as predicted. This work determines the concordance between the actual region of lens use and compares it with the theoretically located regions. The pupil position of 26 subjects was recorded using an eye-tracking system (Tobii-Pro-Glasses 3) at distance and near-reading tasks while wearing a general use progressive power lens. Subjects were asked to read aloud a text showed on a screen placed at 5.25 m and 37 cm while looking though the central and lateral regions of the lens. The pupil position was projected onto the back surface of the lens to obtain the actual region of use for each fixation. Results showed that the actual region of use matched with the theoretically located. On average, the concordance between the actual and theoretical regions of use was 85% for a distance-reading task and 73% for a near-reading task. In conclusion, the proposed method effectively located the actual regions of the lens used, revealing how users' posture affects lens usage. This insight enables the design of more customized progressive lenses based on the areas used during vision-based tasks.

Spatially resolved wavefront aberrations of ophthalmic progressive-power lenses in normal viewing conditions

Abstract:Purpose: To measure the wavefront aberration at different locations in progressive-power lenses (PPL's) isolated and in situ (PPL's plus eye). Methods: A Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor was used to measure progressive-power lenses and human eyes either independently or in combination. In each selected zone, the lens was placed and tilted accordingly to simulate natural viewing conditions. We measured 21 relevant locations across an isolated PPL (plano lens of power addition of 2 D). In six of the locations, the wavefront aberration of the eye plus PPL were obtained in two ways: (1) by direct measurement of the system and (2) by adding the individual wavefront aberrations of the eye and the lens for each appropriate zone. In every case, we obtained the wavefront aberration as Zernike polynomials expansions, the root mean square error, the point-spread function, and the Strehl ratio. Results: Along the corridor of the PPL, third-order coma and trefoil, and astigmatism were the dominant aberrations. In areas of the PPL outside the corridor, astigmatism increased, whereas other aberrations remained similar to the lens center. Small differences were found between the direct and calculated methods used to obtain the wavefront aberration of the eye with the lens, and the possible sources of errors were discussed. In some lenses zones, the aberrations of the lens may be compensated by the particular aberrations of the eye, yielding improved optical performance over that present in the lens alone. Conclusions: We designed and built a wavefront sensor to perform spatially resolved aberration measurements in ophthalmic lenses, in particular in PPL's, either isolated or in combination with the eye. The aberrations appearing in the PPL were compared with those in normal aged eyes.
Refractive power profiles of commercially available soft multifocal contact lenses for myopia control

Abstract:Purpose Lens power profiles can provide valuable insights on the imposed optical defocus and visual experience of contact lens wearers, especially in the context of myopia control. This study measured the refractive power profiles of multifocal soft contact lenses (MFCLs) currently used or that have the potential for use in myopia control using high spatial resolution aberrometry. The instrument's repeatability for determining MFCLs power profiles was also assessed. Method The power profiles of 10 MFCLs of various designs (centre‐distance, centre‐near and extended depth of focus) were measured using the Lambda‐X NIMOEVO, a phase shifting Schlieren‐based device. Power profiles were graphically expressed as measured power at each chord position and the maximum add power was calculated. The repeatability of the NIMOEVO was expressed as the within‐subject standard deviation at each chord position for a subset of five MFCLs. Results The measured distance powers differed from nominal powers for more than half of the MFCLs with a definable distance zone. There were variations in the chord position of the distance and near correction zones, rate of power transitions and calculated maximum add between the MFCLs which did not depend on lens design. For half of the MFCLs, the power profile shape was inconsistent between different nominal back vertex powers of the same design. The repeatability of the NIMOEVO was dependent on the lens design, with designs featuring faster rates of power change exhibiting worse repeatability. Conclusions Significant differences in MFCL power profiles were found which were not adequately represented in labelling. This is likely due to the small number of parameters used to define lens power characteristics. Eye health care practitioners should be aware of potential differences in power profiles between different MFCLs, which will impact the retinal defocus introduced during lens wear and the wearer's visual experience.

Fourier tools for the evaluation of refractive multifocal designs

Abstract:This paper presents innovative tools and methodologies for the theoretical assessment of optical properties in refractive multifocal designs. Utilizing lens segmentation techniques and classical Fourier optics, these tools can be of help evaluating multifocal contact lenses, intraocular lenses, small aperture designs, and corneal inlays. As an example of their utility, this study presents the through-focus Visual Strehl ratios in the frequency domain of 12 multifocal contact lenses from four companies, derived from the sagittal power profiles obtained with a NIMO equipment (LAMBDA-X) for three base prescriptions (- 6.00 D, - 3.00 D, and + 1.00 D). The contact lenses are also assessed alongside higher-order aberrations obtained from 65 eyes, measured using a Wavefront Sciences Complete Ophthalmic Analysis System (AMO). Diameter variations, corresponding to individual pupil sizes (2.45-6.27 mm), were considered in the evaluation. These novel tools enable the theoretical evaluation of multifocal solutions without the need for prototypes. In the case examples presented, they differentiate between lenses tailored for different presbyopic age groups, offer guidance on optimizing hyperfocal distance in contact lens design, and underscore the relevance of the effective aperture effect. Notably, this paper introduces the pioneering conversion of sagittal powers of multifocal solutions into an equivalent wavefront and optical quality metric, with potential applications in myopia control assessments. The author hopes that readers recognize and utilize these tools to advance the field of refractive multifocality.

Abstract:The spatially resolved wavefront aberrations of four types of ophthalmic lens are measured with a custom-built apparatus based on a Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor and specially designed positioning stage. The wavefront aberrations of the progressive addition lenses (Pairs) are compared. The results show that the distribution depends much on the design philosophy, although the average values of root mean square in the entire measurement areas have no significant difference. It is feasible to evaluate the optical performance through the wavefront analysis of PALs, but how to meet the customized visual needs of patients and how to minimize the unwanted aberrations in some special zones are important points that should be taken into account. Power profile and optical performance of two extended range-of-vision intraocular lens designs

Abstract:Purpose: To assess the power profile and optical performance of 2 extended range-of-vision (ERV) intraocular lenses (IOLs), TECNIS Eyhance (ICB00) and LuxSmart, and compare them with their monofocal counterpart lenses with similar platforms and materials: TECNIS 1-piece (ZCB00) and LuxGood, respectively. Setting: Optics and Optometry Faculties of Complutense University (Madrid) and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya BarcelonaTech (Terrassa) in Spain. Design: Laboratory investigation on optical bench. Methods: For each design, the power distribution and (fourth and sixth-order) spherical aberration (SA) across the lens aperture were measured as well as the optical performance using modulation transfer function-based metrics with through-focus evaluation. 3 nominal powers (+10.00 diopters [D], +20.00 D, and +30.00 D) and 3 pupil sizes (2.0 mm, 3.0 mm, and 4.5 mm) were considered to assess whether the base power of the lens and pupillary dynamics have an influence on the depth-of-focus extension. Results: TECNIS Eyhance and LuxSmart IOLs had different power and SA profiles, but both designs shared a positive add power in their central region in comparison with their monofocal counterparts. LuxSmart had a greater add power while TECNIS Eyhance showed higher peak optical quality but smaller depth of focus. Conclusions: Differences of focus extension between the 2 ERV IOL designs are related to differences of power and SA profile. The nominal base power of the IOLs has little effect on their optical quality. However, pupil dynamics plays a key role since it determines the effective add power and optical performance of the ERV IOLs.

Abstract:Purpose: The aim of this study was to develop a methodology, based on profilometer measurements to assess the optical behaviour of Intraocular Lenses (IOls). The "Modulation Transfer Function through-object" (MTF through-object) based on vergence object displacement was calculated for different pupil sizes and pseudophakic eyes. Tilt and decentration were also analysed in a realistic cornea eye model. Methods: For comparison between the different IOLs, an optical quality criterion based on a minimum value the MTF through-object and the recognition of simulated vision optotypes was introduced. Five IOLs were used in this study: Tecnis Eyhance, Mini Well, Tecnis Symfony, Tecnis Synergy and RayOne EMV. Results: The technique was validated with previous methodologies. A general narrowing of the through-object MTF curve compared to the through-focus MTF curve was shown, resulting in greater distances between near and intermediate points and less depth of field around the far peak. The comparison between the IOLs showed that variations in corneal aberrations, pupil size and decentration caused relevant changes in IOL performance. A decrease of the SA produced a hypermetropic shift of the far focus between + 0.3 D and + 0.4 D. Most of IOLs worsen the optical quality as pupil size increased, even the MTF through-object shape changed. Decentration was an important factor in IOL implantation, causing a significant change in MTF through-object shape in most of IOLs. Conclusions: This study highlights the need to evaluate pre-operative patients for corneal aberrations and pupillary size to have the best optical success after cataract surgery in multifocal or extended depth of focus IOLs. Optical characterisation of two novel myopia control spectacle lenses

Abstract:Purpose: To quantify the amount of myopic defocus, contrast modulation and other optical characteristics of two novel spectacle lenses (MiYOSMART by Hoya and Stellest by Essilor) with the inclusion of lenslets in their designs were investigated computationally and experimentally. This paper examined the hypothesis that despite the non-coaxial nature of the optics, image degradation will exist due to the fragmented nature of the base optic when imaging through the lens regions populated by lenslets. Methods: Optical power was evaluated by computing wavefront vergence and curvature from wavefront slope measured with the Optocraft aberrometer within 1.0 and 6.0 mm apertures across MiYOSMART hexagons and Stellest rings. Point-spread functions (PSFs) were computed using physical (wave) optics and geometrical ray optics principles, and compared with experimental measurements using a 4f optical system. Simulated retinal images and modulation transfer functions (MTFs) were computed from PSF-derived optical transfer functions (OTFs). Results: Mean lenslet power in MiYOSMART was +3.95 ± 0.10 D through the hexagons and +6.00 ± 0.15 D in Stellest in rings 1-5 and decreased by 0.42 D/ring reaching 3.50 D in the final one. Stellest lenslets included up to -0.015 microns of primary spherical aberration. PSFs and retinal images revealed simultaneous contributions of the base optic and lenslets. MTFs showed a decrease in contrast at low (1-10 c/deg) spatial frequencies (SFs) comparable to 0.25 D of defocus, and retention of diminished levels of contrast at higher SFs. Conclusions: Varying sagittal power and consistent curvature power across the lenslets is an identifying signature of the novel non-coaxial lens design included in both spectacle lenses. Lenslet array structure itself plays a significant role in determining image characteristics. For both lenses, the blur created by the fragmented base optic contributes to the image quality. The reduced MTFs over a wide range of spatial frequencies result in lowered image contrast.

Abstract:Background The evaluation of visual function after laser in situ keratomileusis(LASIK) mainly focuses on the study of contrast sensitivity funetion (CSF).However,CSF measurement is a subjective method and therefore has a limiting in application.A point spread function (PSF) is becoming a study topic because of its objectivity in assessing visual quality.Objective Present study was to evaluate the change of the modulation transfer function (MTF) of eyes and compare the optical and visual quality of human eyes after LASIK.Methods Thirty-six patients(72 eyes) were included in this study.The patients were divided into low myopia(-2.72±0.52 D),moderate myopia (-4.89+0.80 D) and high myopia (-8.00+0.98 D) groups according to the spherical equivalent (SE)diopter before the sugery.The uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA),best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were examined before and after operation,and PSF data was obtained with Topoeon PSF-1000 analyzer under the 3.0 mm and 6.0 mm pupil size conditions.The follow-up visits of the patients were scheduled at the 7th days,1 st and 3rd months.Written informed consent was obtained from each patient before this study. ResuIts The MTF values among the three refractive groups were significantly different between 3 mm and 6 mm pupil preoperatively (P＜0.05).Under the condition of 3 mm pupil size,the MTF values in the spatial frequencies of 2.98 cpd and 14.88 cpd were significantly declined in different time points after operation in comparison with preoperative ones (P＜0.05).However,the MTF changes had no statistical significance in the spatial frequencies from 18.85-37.70 cpd among various time points(P＞0.05).Under the condition of the 6 mm pupil size,MTF values in low and moderate myopia groups were reduced after operation in comparison with before operation at the spatial frequencies from 2.98-7.44 cpd(P＜0.05),however,there were no obvious difference was found in the spatial frequencies of 9.42-37.70 cpd(P＞0.05).The MTF values of high myopia group was decreased significantly at all spatial frequencies(P＜0.05).The MTF values improved gradually as the prolong of time after operation but was still lower at the 3rd postoperative month than that of preoperation. Conclusion The postoperative visual quality is associated with refractive power and pupil diameter.PSF is a feasible method in assessing the early visual quality after LASIK.
Contour mapping of spectacle lenses

Abstract:The measurement of spectacle lenses by conventional focimeters and automated focimeters assesses only a small region of the lens, and only the power and related data at that point are indicated. In this paper, two methods based on optical Fourier filtering and optical correlation are suggested for contour-mapping the deviations of a spectacle lens over its whole aperture. The fringe pattern appearing on the lens image depicts vividly the characteristics of the tested lens. All the related data are qualitatively seen at a glance and can be calculated from the fringe distribution. Furthermore, the optical processing of the fringes by defocusing is described; thus, the fringes can be continuously changed by shifting the illuminating point source or mask. The shift indicates the spherical power needed to decrease or increase the lens fringes. In addition, a fringe-reading technique is suggested by counting the number of the fringes within a reticle ring. Therefore, the sphere power, cylinder power, cylinder axis, prism power, and prism orientation can be obtained from the reading of the fringes, the shift position, or their combination with a high accuracy. The methods are suitable not only to sphere, spherocylinder, and prism lenses but also to multifocus and progressive power lenses. The suggestion provides a practical way to measure spectacle lenses over the whole aperture.
Spatio-chromatic vision with multifocal diffractive intraocular lens

Abstract:Background: This study aims to detect alterations in the spatio-chromatic pseudophakic vision produced by multifocal diffractive intraocular lenses (IOLs) and provides a physical interpretation. Methods: In vitro characterization of the imaging performance of two diffractive IOLs: AT LISA Tri (Zeiss) and FineVision (PhysIOL) in on-bench model eye illuminated with red (R, 625 nm), green (G, 530 nm) and blue (B, 455 nm) lights. We used the metrics: energy efficiency (EE), area under the modulation transfer function, longitudinal chromatic aberration (LCA), and halo intensity. Through-focus (TF) analysis and calculation of the expected defocus curve under white (W) daylight were included. In vivo visual acuity (VA) of 50 pseudophakics (60 eyes) was assessed under W, R, G, B lights at far and near. Two clinical experiments evaluated LCA and R, G, B TF-EE effects on pseudophakic vision and their relative importance. Results: Clinical mean VA values under W light agreed with the predicted values at far and near for both IOLs. LCA measurements and R, G, B TF-EE curves were consistent with their lens design based on the 0th and 1st diffraction orders operative for far and near vision, respectively. LCA effects were compensated at near but noticed at far (- 0.75 D under B light). We detected strong asymmetry in visual resolution depending on the object distance and the illuminating wavelength-red predominance at far, blue predominance at near-in consistency with the TF-EE measurements. Conclusions: Diffractive multifocal IOL designs produce asymmetries in the spatio-chromatic vision of pseudophakics beyond the alterations strictly due to LCA. VA asymmetry for far/near object distance under R and B illumination is clinically detectable in subjects implanted with IOLs with 0th and 1st diffraction orders for far and near vision, respectively. Such VA asymmetry cannot be explained solely from the influence of defocus, as would be derived from a chromatic difference of power, but mainly from the wavelength dependence of the EE.

Abstract:Purpose. The purpose of this study was to determine and compare visual quality indicators in eyes wearing multifocal center-distance, and dual-focus soft contact lenses that are specifically designed for the purpose of myopia progression management, as well as single-vision soft contact lenses. Material and Methods. Visual quality indicators of 34 eyes of healthy, young myopic adults ages 20 to 35 were determined. Non-cycloplegic measurements were conducted without contact lenses (baseline) and while subjects wore soft multi- focal center-distance soft contact lenses (ArtMost SoftOK SMR and SEED 1-day Pure UP Multistage daily disposable), dual-focus soft contact lenses (CooperVision MiSight 1 Day), and single-vision soft contact lenses (iLens Aqua Bi-weekly). In this study, the lenses were referred to as SoftOK, Pure UP, MiSight, and iLens. The measured and analyzed visual quality indicators included high-contrast distance and near visual acuity, stereopsis, accommodative amplitude, accommo- dative response, spherical aberration, and horizontal coma. Results. High-contrast distance and near visual acuities, accommodative responses, and stereopsis values achieved with the SoftOK, Pure UP, and MiSight contact lenses werecomparable to those achieved with the iLens single-vision soft contact lenses and to baseline values. Accommodative amplitude was slightly reduced with the MiSight contact lens and spherical aberration was significantly higher with the SoftOK lens compared to the other lenses. Both findings had statistical significance (P = 0.047 and P < 0.001, respec- tively). Horizontal coma, most likely resulting from slight lens decentration, was higher and more variable with the SoftOK lens compared to the other lenses, although no statistical significance was determined. Conclusion. Dual-focus and multifocal center-distance soft contact lenses allow for good visual quality, especially clear vision at distance and near. Small differences in accommoda- tive amplitude and spherical aberration were found between lens designs, however the clinical impact requires further investigation. Screening of positive dysphotopsia before multifocal intraocular lens implantation

Abstract:Purpose: To assess the photic phenomena (PP) and positive dysphotopsia in candidates for presbyopia or cataract surgery and to evaluate their relationship with cataract grading systems. Design: Retrospective observational. Methods: Monocular data for 82 subjects measured during the preoperative screening were retrospectively retrieved from our database. The evaluated variables consisted of two methods for PP measurement: light distortion index (LDI) and parameters obtained from a simulator, both of which were combined with subjective bother related to PP. The cutoff for LDI that better predicted patients passing from slightly to moderately bothersome was estimated. The relationships between LDI and the following objective cataract grading methods were also assessed: objective scatter index (OSI), dysfunctional lens index (DLI), and Pentacam Nucleus Staging (PNS). Results: LDI was the best method for measuring PP, which showed a significant correlation with the bothersome question (rho = 0.34, P = 0.002) and also with OSI (rho = 0.67, P < 0.0005), DLI (rho = −0.29, P = 0.007), and PNS (rho = 0.48, P < 0.0005). The number/percentage of patients who found it bothersome was as follows: “Not at all” (18/22%), “Slightly” (41/50%), “Moderately” (15/18.3%), and “Very” (8/9.7%). The cutoff value that predicted the transition from slightly to moderately bothersome was ≥15.20% according to LDI, which could be estimated with the following values for grading: ≥2.8 for OSI, ≤7.6 for DLI, and ≥2 for PNS. Conclusions: Patients reporting moderately or higher bothersome levels in the preoperative period and with LDI <15.20%, 7.6 for DLI, and <2 for PNS might deserve special attention in the multifocal intraocular lens selection.

Abstract:Mycosis fungoides (MF), the most common primitive cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, can undergo transformation in about 10% of cases. Transformed mycosis fungoides (T-MF) is often associated with the appearance of a CD20+ component. The aim of this study was to analyze whether such cells are reactive or lymphomatous and to evaluate their prognostic impact. Among 311 T-MFs from the French Cutaneous Lymphoma Study Group registry, we studied 148 cases. CD20 was expressed in 88 cases (59%). The proportion of CD20+ cells among T-MF lesions was <10% for 54 cases (38%), 10% to 49% for 71 cases (81%), and >50% for 17 cases (19%). We focused the study on 23 cases that contained >50% CD20+ cells. To evaluate the nature of the CD20+ component, we used immunohistochemistry (2 anti-CD20 antibodies, L26 and 7D1 clones, and 2 other anti–B-cell antigen antibodies, CD22 and PAX5) and a double-stain immunofluorescence technique (anti-CD20 and anti-CD3 antibodies). The clonality of B cells was studied by polymerase chain reaction. Three profiles were observed. In 15 of the 23 cases, the CD20+ cells were reactive. In 6 cases, CD20 protein was aberrantly expressed in T-MF lesions. Lastly, there were 2 composite lymphomas (T-MF infiltrate with a B-cell follicular lymphoma). In view of this series, we propose a simple algorithm to help pathologists evaluate the nature of the CD20+ component associated with T-MF. Although statistically not significant, there was a trend toward a worse prognosis in the presence of >50% CD20+ cells and of a nodular perifollicular pattern of this component.

Abstract:From the Department of Surgery, V. A. Medical Center and Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina A history of caustic injury was obtained in 12 of 846 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus. The average age was 52.8 years; the interval from injury to development of carcinoma was 45.8 years. Nine of the 12 carcinomas were in the midthoracic segment. Resection was possible in nine patients, with two surviving over ten years. A survey of reported series with this association confirms the increased resection rate and probability of long survival compared with the usual carcinoma of the esophagus

Abstract:Objective To compare the clinical outcomes of laser subepithelial keratomileusis(LASEK)with laser in situ keratomileusis(LASIK)for the correction of high myopic astigmatism using the power vector method of Thibos.Methods This analysis comprised 59 eyes that had LASEK and 37 eyes that had LASIK for high myopia astigmatism(cylinder ≥-2.75 D).Postoperative uncorrected visual acuity(UCVA),best corrected visual acuity(BCVA),manifest refractive errors and power vector(B)were compared with preoperative respectively.Manifest refractive errors were expressed as a spherical lens of power M and a Jackson crossed cylinder.The pythagorean length of the power vector(B)was a measure of overall blurring strength of a spherocylindrical lens or refractive error.Results UCVA and BCVA were significantly better after operation in both groups,whereas BCVA had no significant difference in LASIK eyes.Postoperative refractive error and blur strength(B)were significantly lower in both groups.The postoperative vision,refractive error and blur strength(B)were similar in both groups.No eye lost more than 2 lines of BCVA in both groups.Power vector analysis found that both LASEK and LASIK were successful in achieving the astigmatic surgical correction at the last postoperative visit.Conclusions LASEK and LASIK are both effective and safe procedure for the treatment of high myopic astigmatism.The power vector approach creates a natural link from current clinical practice to an optical theory,powerful enough to provide a comprehensive description of all the refractive imperfections of an eye.
Predicting Short-Term Subjective Vision Performance of Contact Lenses Used in Myopia Control

Abstract:Objective: To investigate whether initial assessment of contact lenses prescribed for myopia control (MC) predicts short-term visual performance. Method: Retrospective analysis of 43 participants in a double-masked, randomized, cross-over trial wearing at least one lens: single-vision (SV) lens (1-DAY ACUVUE MOIST) or MC lenses (MiSight or Proclear Multifocal-Distance +2.00D). Participants completed questionnaires at the fitting visit, a take-home questionnaire (THQ) 3 days after fitting and finally at the assessment visit (≥5 days after fitting). Questions comprised vision clarity and lack of ghosting (distance, intermediate, near at day/night time); vision stability; driving vision; overall vision satisfaction and comfort (1–10 scale, 1-point steps); and willingness to purchase based on vision and MC benefit of lens (yes/no response). Visual acuity was measured at fitting and assessment visits. Results: Vision clarity (intermediate and near) was significantly worse at assessment compared with fitting while wearing MC lenses (P<0.001), as was overall vision satisfaction (P<0.001), comfort (P<0.001), and vision stability (P=0.001) while wearing either SV or MC lenses. Participants willing to purchase at assessment visit was 84% with SV and 36% with MC lenses, increasing to 88% (SV, P=1.00) and 61% (MC, P<0.001) if the lenses slowed myopia progression. Visual acuity was no different with either MC or SV lenses at fitting or assessment (P≥0.251). Conclusion: Initial performance at fitting did not predict short-term performance for SV or MC lenses. A significant increase in willingness to purchase if lenses slowed myopia progression was observed while wearing MC lenses. Educating patients on the benefits might increase acceptability of MC lenses.

Assessment of the performance of automated focimeters in the measurement of single vision spectacle lenses

Abstract:Background: The accuracy and precision of any instrument should not be taken for granted. While there is an international standard for checking focimeters, there is no report of any study on their performance. Method: A sample set of 51 focimeters (11 brands), were used to measure the spherical power of a set of lenses and the prismatic power of two lenses complying with ISO 9342-1:2005 and other calibrated prismatic lenses and the spherical power of some grey filters. Results: The mean measured spherical power corresponded very closely with the calibrated values; however, the spread of results was substantial and 10 focimeters did not comply with ISO 8598:1996. The measurement of prism was much more accurate and precise and all the focimeters complied easily. With the grey filters, about one-third of the focimeters either showed erratic reading or an error with the equivalent of category 4 sunglasses. On the other hand, nine focimeters had stable and accurate reading on a filter with a luminous transmittance of 0.5 per cent. Conclusions: These results confirm that, in common with all other measurement instruments, there is a need to ensure that a focimeter is reading accurately and precisely over the range of refractive powers and luminous transmittances. The accurate and precise performance of an automated focimeter over its working life cannot be assumed. Checking before purchase with a set of calibrated lenses and some dark sunglass tints will indicate the suitability of a focimeter. Routine checking with the calibrated lenses will inform the users if a focimeter continues to indicate accurately.
