Abstract:We review the relationship between discrete groups of symmetries of Euclidean three-space, constructions in algebraic geometry around Kleinian singularities including versions of Hilbert and Quot schemes, and their relationship to finite-dimensional and affine Lie algebras via the McKay correspondence. We focus on combinatorial aspects, such as the enumeration of certain types of partition-like objects, reviewing in particular a recently developed root-of-unity-substitution calculus. While the most complete results are in type A, we also develop aspects of the theory in type D, and end with some questions about the exceptional type E cases.

Abstract:Consider a simple algebraic group $G$ of classical type and its Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. Let $(e,h,f) \subset \mathfrak{g}$ be an $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-triple and $Q_e= C_G(e,h,f)$. The torus $T_e$ that comes from the $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-triple acts on the Springer fiber $\mathcal{B}_e$. Let $\mathcal{B}_e^{gr}$ denote the fixed point loci of $\mathcal{B}_e$ under this torus action. Our main geometric result is that when the partition of $e$ has up to $4$ rows, the derived category $D^b(\mathcal{B}_e^{gr})$ admits a complete exceptional collection that is compatible with the $Q_e$-action. The objects in this collection give us a finite set $Y_e$ that is naturally equipped with a $Q_e$-centrally extended structure. We prove that the set $Y_e$ constructed in this way coincides with a finite set that has appeared in various contexts in representation theory. For example, a direct summand $J_c$ of the asymptotic Hecke algebra is isomorphic to $K_0(Sh^{Q_e}(Y_e\times Y_e)$. The left cells in the two-sided cell $c$ corresponding to the adjoint orbit of $e$ are in bijection with the $Q_e$-orbits in $Y_e$. Our main numerical result is an algorithm to compute the multiplicities of the $Q_e$-centrally extended orbits that appear in $Y_e$.

Hyperkähler torsion structures invariant by nilpotent Lie groups

Abstract:We study HKT structures on nilpotent Lie groups and on associated nilmanifolds. We exhibit three weak HKT structures on $\R^8$ which are homogeneous with respect to extensions of Heisenberg type Lie groups. The corresponding hypercomplex structures are of a special kind, called abelian. We prove that on any 2-step nilpotent Lie group all invariant HKT structures arise from abelian hypercomplex structures. Furthermore, we use a correspondence between abelian hypercomplex structures and subspaces of ${\frak sp}(n)$ to produce continuous families of compact and noncompact of manifolds carrying non isometric HKT structures. Finally, geometrical properties of invariant HKT structures on 2-step nilpotent Lie groups are obtained.

Abstract:We consider a real Abelian Lie supergroup $G$ acting on its complexification $M$, equipped with a $G$-invariant super Kähler form. We extend the scheme of classical geometric quantization to this setting and construct a unitary $G$-representation. We show that the occurrences of its irreducible subrepresentations are governed by the image of the moment map of the super Kähler form. As an application, we construct a Gelfand model of $G$, namely a unitary $G$-representation in which every unitary irreducible representation occurs exactly once.

Abstract:In this paper we continue our investigation of the global categorical symmetries that arise when gauging finite higher groups and their higher subgroups with discrete torsion. The motivation is to provide a common perspective on the construction of non-invertible global symmetries in higher dimensions and a precise description of the associated symmetry categories. We propose that the symmetry categories obtained by gauging higher subgroups may be defined as higher group-theoretical fusion categories, which are built from the projective higher representations of higher groups. As concrete applications we provide a unified description of the symmetry categories of gauge theories in three and four dimensions based on the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{so}(N)$, and a fully categorical description of non-invertible symmetries obtained by gauging a 1-form symmetry with a mixed 't Hooft anomaly. We also discuss the effect of discrete torsion on symmetry categories, based a series of obstructions determined by spectral sequence arguments.

Abstract:A totally oriented Klein graph is a trivalent spatial graph in the 3-sphere with a 3-coloring of its edges and an orientation on each bicolored link. A totally oriented Klein foam is a 3-colored 2-complex in the 4-ball whose boundary is a Klein foam and whose bicolored surfaces are oriented. We extend Gille-Robert's signature for 3-Hamiltonian Klein graphs to all totally oriented Klein graphs and develop an analogy of Murasugi's bounds relating the signature, slice genus and unknotting number of knots. In particular, we show that the signature of a totally oriented Klein graph produces a lower bound on the negative orbifold Euler characteristic of certain totally oriented Klein foams bounded by $\Gamma$. When $\Gamma$ is abstractly planar, these negative Euler characteristics, in turn, produce a lower bound on a certain natural unknotting number for $\Gamma$. Mutatis mutandi, we produce lower bounds on the corresponding Gordian distance between two totally oriented Klein graphs that can be related by a sequence of crossing changes. We also give examples of theta-curves for which our lower bounds on unknotting number improve on previously known bounds.

Abstract:Abstract. We show that a Kleinian surface group, or hyperbolic 3-manifold with a cusp-preserving homotopy-equivalence to a surface, has bounded geometry if and only if there is an upper bound on an associated collection of coefficients that depend only on its end invariants. Bounded geometry is a positive lower bound on the lengths of closed geodesics. When the surface is a once-punctured torus, the coefficients coincide with the continued fraction coefficients associated to the ending laminations.

Geometries in perturbative quantum field theory

Abstract:In perturbative quantum field theory one encounters certain, very specific geometries over the integers. These perturbative quantum geometries determine the number contents of the amplitude considered. In the article `Modular forms in quantum field theory' F. Brown and the author report on a first list of perturbative quantum geometries using the $c_2$-invariant in $\phi^4$ theory. A main tool was denominator reduction which allowed the authors to examine graphs up to loop order (first Betti number) 10. We introduce an improved quadratic denominator reduction which makes it possible to extend the previous results to loop order 11 (and partially orders 12 and 13). For comparison, also non-$\phi^4$ graphs are investigated. Here, we extend the results from loop order 9 to 10. The new database of 4801 unique $c_2$-invariants (previously 157) -- while being consistent with all major $c_2$-conjectures -- leads to a more refined picture of perturbative quantum geometries. In the appendix, Friedrich Knop proves a Chevalley-Warning-Ax theorem for double covers of affine space.

Abstract:Tensor hierarchy algebras constitute a class of non-contragredient Lie superalgebras, whose finite-dimensional members are the "Cartan-type" Lie superalgebras in Kac's classification. They have applications in mathematical physics, especially in extended geometry and gauged supergravity. We further develop the recently proposed definition of tensor hierarchy algebras in terms of generators and relations encoded in a Dynkin diagram (which coincides with the diagram for a related Borcherds superalgebra). We apply it to cases where a grey node is added to the Dynkin diagram of a rank $r+1$ Kac-Moody algebra $\mathfrak{g}^+$, which in turn is an extension of a rank $r$ finite-dimensional semisimple simply laced Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. The algebras are specified by $\mathfrak{g}$ together with a dominant integral weight $\lambda$. As a by-product, a remarkable identity involving representation matrices for arbitrary integral highest weight representations of $\mathfrak{g}$ is proven. An accompanying paper describes the application of tensor hierarchy algebras to the gauge structure and dynamics in models of extended geometry.

Nilmanifolds with non-nilpotent complex structures and their pseudo-Kähler geometry

Abstract:We classify nilpotent Lie algebras with complex structures of weakly non-nilpotent type in real dimension eight, which is the lowest dimension where they arise. Our study, together with previous results on strongly non-nilpotent structures, completes the classification of 8-dimensional nilpotent Lie algebras admitting complex structures of non-nilpotent type. As an application, we identify those that support a pseudo-Kähler metric, thus providing new counterexamples to a previous conjecture and an infinite family of (Ricci-flat) non-flat neutral Calabi-Yau structures. Moreover, we arrive at the topological restriction $b_1(X)\geq 3$ for every pseudo-Kähler nilmanifold $X$ with invariant complex structure, up to complex dimension four.

Abstract:We consider geometric and supergravity Killing spinors and the spinor bilinears constructed out of them. The spinor bilinears of geometric Killing spinors correspond to the antisymmetric generalizations of Killing vector fields which are called Killing–Yano forms. They constitute a Lie superalgebra structure in constant curvature spacetimes. We show that the Dirac currents of geometric Killing spinors satisfy a Lie algebra structure up to a condition on 2-form spinor bilinears. We propose that the spinor bilinears of supergravity Killing spinors give way to different generalizations of Killing vector fields to higher degree forms. It is also shown that those supergravity Killing forms constitute a Lie algebra structure in six- and ten-dimensional cases. For five- and eleven-dimensional cases, the Lie algebra structure depends on an extra condition on supergravity Killing forms.

Abstract:We prove that no nilpotent Lie algebra admits an invariant generalized Kaehler structure. This is done by showing that a certain differential graded algebra associated to a generalized complex manifold is formal in the generalized Kaehler case, while it is never formal for a generalized complex structure on a nilpotent Lie algebra.
