Abstract:The gradient bounds of generalized barycentric coordinates play an essential role in the $H^1$ norm approximation error estimate of generalized barycentric interpolations. Similarly, the $H^k$ norm, $k>1$, estimate needs upper bounds of high-order derivatives, which are not available in the literature. In this paper, we derive such upper bounds for the Wachspress generalized barycentric coordinates on simple convex $d$-dimensional polytopes, $d\ge 1$. The result can be used to prove optimal convergence for Wachspress-based polytopal finite element approximation of, for example, fourth-order elliptic equations. Another contribution of this paper is to compare various shape-regularity conditions for simple convex polytopes, and to clarify their relations using knowledge from convex geometry.

Riemannian Geometry to Higher Order in the Infinitesimals

Abstract:Differential geometry may be generalized to allow infinitesimals to any order. The purpose of the present contribution is to show that the theory so developed expands received geometrical ideas in an interesting way, rich in potential for future exploration. The first order of business is to furnish the notion of a higher tangent vector, as defined abstractly by means of commutative algebra, with a workable interpretation in terms of spatial intuition. Then we introduce the differential calculus of the so-called jet connection, viz., an extension of the usual affine connection that takes higher tangent vectors as its arguments -- thereby enabling us to give a sense to parallel transport in the direction of a higher tangent, what has (to our knowledge) never been entertained before. After generalizing the Riemannian metric tensor to include a dependence up to any order in the infinitesimals, we arrive at natural analogues of the Levi-Civita connection and the Riemannian curvature tensor which display novel phenomena rooted in interactions among infinitesimals differing in order. Finally on the integral side, an intrinsic theory of integration adapted to integrands possibly of higher than first order in the differentials is developed, with a view towards eventually defining an action functional that will be applicable in the general theory of relativity.

Abstract:We obtain global analytic hypoellipticity for a class of differential operators that can be expressed as a zero-order perturbation of a sum of squares of vector fields with real-analytic coefficients on compact Lie groups. The key conditions are: the vector fields must satisfy Hörmander's finite type condition; there exists a closed subgroup whose action leaves the vector fields invariant; and the operator must be elliptic in directions transversal to the action of the subgroup. This paves the way for further studies on the regularity of sums of squares on principal fiber bundles.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the rectifying curves in multiplicative Euclidean space of dimension 3, i.e., those curves for which the position vector always lies in its rectifying plane. Since the definition of rectifying curve is affine and not metric, we are directly able to perform multiplicative differential-geometric concepts to investigate such curves. Having presented several characterizations, we completely classify the multiplicative rectifying curves by means of the multiplicative spherical curves.

Abstract:Let $f: B^n \rightarrow {\mathbb R}$ be a $d+1$ times continuously differentiable function on the unit ball $B^n$, with $\max_{z\in B^n} \| f(z) \|=1$. A well-known fact is that if $f$ vanishes on a set $Z\subset B^n$ with a non-empty interior, then for each $k=1,\ldots,d+1$ the norm of the $k$-th derivative $\|f^{(k)}\|$ is at least $M=M(n,k)>0$. We show that this fact remains valid for all ``sufficiently dense'' sets $Z$ (including finite ones). The density of $Z$ is measured via the behavior of the covering numbers of $Z$. In particular, the bound $\|f^{(k)}\|\ge \tilde M=\tilde M(n,k)>0$ holds for each $Z$ with the box (or Minkowski, or entropy) dimension $\dim_e(Z)$ greater than $n-\frac{1}{k}$.

Abstract:In this short note, we hope to give a rapid induction for non-experts into the world of Differential Harnack inequalities, which have been so influential in geometric analysis and probability theory over the past few decades. At the coarsest level, these are often mysterious-looking inequalities that hold for `positive' solutions of some parabolic PDE, and can be verified quickly by grinding out a computation and applying a maximum principle. In this note we emphasise the geometry behind the Harnack inequalities, which typically turn out to be assertions of the convexity of some natural object. As an application, we explain how Hamilton's Differential Harnack inequality for mean curvature flow of a $n$-dimensional submanifold of $R^{n+1}$ can be viewed as following directly from the well-known preservation of convexity under mean curvature flow, but this time of a $(n+1)$-dimensional submanifold of $R^{n+2}$. We also briefly survey the earlier work that led us to these observations.

Abstract:Expressions for the derivatives with respect to order of modified Bessel functions evaluated at integer orders and certain integral representations of associated Legendre functions with modulus argument greater than unity are used to compute derivatives of the associated Legendre functions with respect to their parameters. For the associated Legendre functions of the first and second kind, derivatives with respect to the degree are evaluated at odd-half-integer degrees, for general complex orders, and derivatives with respect to the order are evaluated at integer orders, for general complex degrees.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a $p$-adic field, and let $K_\infty/K$ be a Galois extension that is almost totally ramified, and whose Galois group is a $p$-adic Lie group of dimension $1$. We prove that $K_\infty$ is not dense in $(\mathbf{B}_{\mathrm{dR}}^+ / \operatorname{Fil}^2 \mathbf{B}_{\mathrm{dR}}^+ )^{\operatorname{Gal}(\overline{K}/K_\infty)}$. Moreover, the restriction of $\theta$ to the closure of $K_\infty$ is injective, and its image via $\theta$ is the set of vectors of $\widehat{K}_\infty$ that are $C^1$ with zero derivative for the action of $\operatorname{Gal}(K_\infty/K)$. The main ingredient for proving these results is the construction of an explicit lattice of $\mathcal{O}_{K_\infty}$ that is commensurable with $\mathcal{O}_{K_\infty}^{d=0}$, where $d : \mathcal{O}_{K_\infty} \to \Omega_{\mathcal{O}_{K_\infty} / \mathcal{O}_K}$ is the differential.

Abstract:A tautological system, introduced in [17, 18], arises as a regular holonomic system of partial differential equations that govern the period integrals of a family of complete intersections in a complex manifold X, equipped with a suitable Lie group action. In this article, we introduce two formulas-one purely algebraic, the other geometric-to compute the rank of the solution sheaf of such a system for CY hypersurfaces in a generalized flag variety. The algebraic version gives the local solution space as a Lie algebra homology group, while the geometric one as the middle de Rham cohomology of the complement of a hyperplane section in X. We use both formulas to find certain degenerate points for which the rank of the solution sheaf becomes 1. These rank 1 points appear to be good candidates for the so-called large complex structure limits in mirror symmetry. The formulas are also used to prove a conjecture of Hosono, Lian, and Yau, on the completeness of the extended GKZ system when X is P-n [12].
Quantitative tame properties of differentiable functions with controlled derivatives

Abstract:We show that differentiable functions, defined on a convex body $K \subseteq \mathbb R^d$, whose derivatives do not exceed a suitable given sequence of positive real numbers share many properties with polynomials. The role of the degree of a polynomial is hereby played by an integer associated with the given sequence of reals, the diameter of $K$, and a real parameter linked to the $C^0$-norm of the function. We give quantitative information on the size of the zero set, show that it admits a local parameterization by Sobolev functions, and prove an inequality of Remez-type. From the latter, we deduce several consequences, for instance, a bound on the volume of sublevel sets and a comparison of $L^p$-norms reversing Hölder's inequality. The validity of many of the results only depends on the derivatives up to some finite order; the order can be specified in terms of the given data.

Abstract:Higher order derivatives of functions are structured high dimensional objects which lend themselves to many alternative representations, with the most popular being multi-index, matrix and tensor representations. The choice between them depends on the desired analysis since each presents its own advantages and disadvantages. In this paper, we highlight a vectorized representation, in which higher order derivatives are expressed as vectors. This allows us to construct an elegant and rigorous algebra of vector-valued functions of vector variables, which would be unwieldy, if not impossible, to do so using the other representations. The fundamental results that we establish for this algebra of differentials are the identification theorems, with concise existence and uniqueness properties, between differentials and derivatives of an arbitrary order. From these fundamental identifications, we develop further analytic tools, including a Leibniz rule for the product of functions, and a chain rule (Faà di Bruno's formula) for the composition of functions. To complete our exposition, we illustrate how existing tools (such as Taylor's theorem) can be incorporated into and generalized within our framework of higher order differential calculus.

Hyperbolicity of generic hypersurfaces of polynomial degree via Green-Griffiths jet differentials

Abstract:We give a new version of a recent result of B{é}rczi-Kirwan, proving the Kobayashi and Green-Griffiths-Lang conjectures for generic hypersurfaces in the projective space , with a polynomial lower bound on the degree. Our strategy again relies on Siu's technique of slanted vector fields and the use of holomorphic Morse inequalities to prove the existence of a jet differential equation with a negative twist -- however, instead of using a space of invariant jet differentials, we base our computations on the classical Green-Griffiths jet spaces.
