Abstract:We study the behavior of real-normalized (RN) meromorphic differentials on Riemann surfaces under degeneration. We determine all possible limits of RN differentials in degenerating sequences of smooth curves, and describe the limit in terms of solutions of the corresponding Kirchhoff problem. We further show that the limit of zeroes of RN differentials is the set of zeroes of a twisted meromorphic RN differential, which we explicitly construct. Our main new tool is an explicit solution of the jump problem on Riemann surfaces in plumbing coordinates, by using the Cauchy kernel on the normalization of the nodal curve. Since this kernel does not depend on plumbing coordinates, we are able to approximate the RN differential on a smooth plumbed curve by a collection of meromorphic differentials on the irreducible components of a stable curve, with an explicit bound on the precision of such approximation. This allows us to also study these approximating differentials at suitable scales, so that the limit under degeneration is not identically zero. These methods can be applied more generally to study degenerations of differentials on Riemann surfaces satisfying various conditions.

Abstract:We produce a flexible tool for contracting subcurves of logarithmic hyperelliptic curves, which is local around the subcurve and commutes with arbitrary base-change. As an application, we prove that hyperelliptic multiscale differentials determine a sequence of Gorenstein contractions of the underlying nodal curve, whose dualising bundle they descend to generate. This is the first piece of evidence for a more general conjecture about limits of differentials.

Abstract:We prove a differential Harnack inequality for noncompact convex hypersurfaces flowing with normal speed equal to a symmetric function of their principal curvatures. This extends a result of Andrews for compact hypersurfaces. We assume that the speed of motion is one-homogeneous, uniformly elliptic, and suitably 'uniformly' inverse-concave as a function of the principal curvatures. In addition, we assume the hypersurfaces satisfy pointwise scaling-invariant gradient estimates for the second fundamental form. For many natural flows all of these hypotheses are met by any ancient solution which arises as a blow-up of a singularity.

Canonical Differential Equations Beyond Genus One

Abstract:We discuss for the first time canonical differential equations for hyperelliptic Feynman integrals. We study hyperelliptic Lauricella functions that include in particular the maximal cut of the two-loop non-planar double box, which is known to involve a hyperlliptic curve of genus two. We consider specifically three- and four-parameter Lauricella functions, each associated to a hyperelliptic curve of genus two, and construct their canonical differential equations. Whilst core steps of this construction rely on existing methods $\unicode{x2014}$ that we show to be applicable in the higher-genus case $\unicode{x2014}$ we use new ideas on the structure of the twisted cohomology intersection matrix associated to the integral family in canonical form to obtain a better understanding of the appearing new functions. We further observe the appearance of Siegel modular forms in the $\varepsilon$-factorized differential equation matrix, nicely generalizing similar observations from the elliptic case.

Abstract:Abstract In this article we show that for every finite area hyperbolic surface X of type ( g , n ) {(g,n)} and any harmonic Beltrami differential μ on X, then the magnitude of μ at any point of small injectivity radius is uniform bounded from above by the ratio of the Weil–Petersson norm of μ over the square root of the systole of X up to a uniform positive constant multiplication. We apply the uniform bound above to show that the Weil–Petersson Ricci curvature, restricted at any hyperbolic surface of short systole in the moduli space, is uniformly bounded from below by the negative reciprocal of the systole up to a uniform positive constant multiplication. As an application, we show that the average total Weil–Petersson scalar curvature over the moduli space is uniformly comparable to - g {-g} as the genus g goes to infinity.

Abstract:We show that for many strata of Abelian differentials in low genus the sum of Lyapunov exponents for the Teichmueller geodesic flow is the same for all Teichmueller curves in that stratum, hence equal to the sum of Lyapunov exponents for the whole stratum. This behavior is due to the disjointness property of Teichmueller curves with various geometrically defined divisors on moduli spaces of curves.

Abstract:This paper lays the foundation for determining the Kodaira dimension of the projectivized strata of Abelian differentials with prescribed zero and pole orders in large genus. We work with the moduli space of multi-scale differentials constructed in [BCGGM2] which provides an orbifold compactification of these strata. We establish the projectivity of the moduli space of multi-scale differentials, describe the locus of canonical singularities, and compute a series of effective divisor classes. Moreover, we exhibit a perturbation of the canonical class which allows the corresponding pluri-canonical forms to extend over the locus of non-canonical singularities. As applications, we certify general type for strata with few zeros as well as for strata with equidistributed zero orders when g is sufficiently large. In particular, we show general type for the odd spin components of the minimal strata for g > 12.

Abstract:Abstract We review some classical and modern aspects of hypergeometric differential equations, including A -hypergeometric systems of Gel $$'$$ ′ fand, Graev, Kapranov and Zelevinsky. Some recent advances in this theory, such as Euler–Koszul homology, rank jump phenomena, irregularity questions and Hodge theoretic aspects are discussed with more details. We also give some applications of the theory of hypergeometric systems to toric mirror symmetry.

Discrete Differential Geometry for $C^{1,1}$ Hyperbolic Surfaces of Non-Constant Curvature

Abstract:We develop a discrete differential geometry for surfaces of non-constant negative curvature, which can be used to model various phenomena from the growth of flower petals to marine invertebrate swimming. Specifically, we derive and numerically integrate a version of the classical Lelieuvre formulas that apply to immersions of $C^{1,1}$ hyperbolic surfaces of non-constant curvature. In contrast to the constant curvature case, these formulas do not provide an explicit method for constructing an immersion but rather describe an immersion via an implicit set of equations. We propose an iterative method for resolving these equations. Because we are interested in scenarios where the curvature is a function of the intrinsic material coordinates, in particular, on the geodesic distance from an origin, we suggest a fast marching method for computing geodesic distance on manifolds. We apply our methods to generate surfaces of non-constant curvature and demonstrate how one can introduce branch points to account for the sort of multi-generational buckling and subwrinkling observed in many applications.

Local Euler characteristics of $A_n$-singularities and their application to hyperbolicity

Abstract:Wahl's local Euler characteristic measures the local contributions of a singularity to the usual Euler characteristic of a sheaf. Using tools from toric geometry, we study the local Euler characteristic of sheaves of symmetric differentials for isolated surface singularities of type $A_n$. We prove an explicit formula for the local Euler characteristic of the $m$th symmetric power of the cotangent bundle; this is a quasi-polynomial in $m$ of period $n+1$. We also express the components of the local Euler characteristic as a count of lattice points in a non-convex polyhedron, again showing it is a quasi-polynomial. We apply our computations to obtain new examples of algebraic quasi-hyperbolic surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$ of low degree. We show that an explicit family of surfaces with many singularities constructed by Labs has no genus $0$ curves for the members of degree at least $8$ and no curves of genus $0$ or $1$ for degree at least $10$.

Abstract:The strata of the moduli spaces of Abelian differentials are non-homogenous spaces carrying natural bi-algebraic structures. Partly inspired by the case of homogenous spaces carrying bi-algebraic structures (such as torii, Abelian varieties and Shimura varieties), Klingler and Lerer recently showed that any bi-algebraic curve in a stratum of the moduli space of Abelian differentials is linear provided that the so-called condition $(\star)$ is fulfilled. In this note, we construct a non-linear bi-algebraic curve, resp. surface, of Abelian differentials of genus $7$, resp. $10$.

Abstract:We develop an explicit theory of Kummer varieties associated to Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves of genus 3, over any field $k$ of characteristic $\neq 2$. In particular, we provide explicit equations defining the Kummer variety $\mathcal K$ as a subvariety of $\mathbb P^7$, together with explicit polynomials giving the duplication map on $\mathcal K$. A careful study of the degenerations of this map then forms the basis for the development of an explicit theory of heights on such Jacobians when $k$ is a number field. We use this input to obtain a good bound on the difference between naive and canonical height, which is a necessary ingredient for the explicit determination of the Mordell-Weil group. We illustrate our results with two examples.

Abstract:We establish that the Grunsky norm of any normalized univalent function on the disk is completely determined by the squares of holomorphic abelian differentials (in contrast to the Teichmuller norm, which relates to all integrable holomorphic quadratic differentials). This result has important interesting applications. In particular, it provides an explicit representation of Fredholm eigevalues of all quasiconformal curves.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the zero loci of local systems of the form $\delta\Pi$, where $\Pi$ is the period sheaf of the universal family of CY hypersurfaces in a suitable ambient space $X$, and $\delta$ is a given differential operator on the space of sections $V^\vee=\Gamma(X,K_X^{-1})$. Using earlier results of three of the authors and their collaborators, we give several different descriptions of the zero locus of $\delta\Pi$. As applications, we prove that the locus is algebraic and in some cases, non-empty. We also give an explicit way to compute the polynomial defining equations of the locus in some cases. This description gives rise to a natural stratification to the zero locus.

Abstract:To study a 0-dimensional scheme X in Pn over a perfect field K , we use the module of Kähler differentials ΩR/K1 of its homogeneous coordinate ring R and its exterior powers, the higher modules of Kähler differentials ΩR/Km . One of our main results is a characterization of weakly curvilinear schemes X by the Hilbert polynomials of the modules ΩR/Km which allows us to check this property algorithmically without computing the primary decomposition of the vanishing ideal of X . Further main achievements are precise formulas for the Hilbert functions and Hilbert polynomials of the modules ΩR/Km for a fat point scheme X which extend and settle previous partial results and conjectures. Underlying these results is a novel method: we first embed the homogeneous coordinate ring R into its truncated integral closure R ̃ . Then we use the corresponding map from the module of Kähler differentials ΩR/K1 to ΩR ̃/K1 to find a formula for the Hilbert polynomial HP(ΩR/K1) and a sharp bound for the regularity index ri(ΩR/K1) . Next we extend this to formulas for the Hilbert polynomials HP(ΩR/Km) and bounds for the regularity indices of the higher modules of Kähler differentials. As a further application, we characterize uniformity conditions on X using the Hilbert functions of the Kähler differential modules of X and its subschemes.

Large-$n$ asymptotics for Weil-Petersson volumes of moduli spaces of bordered hyperbolic surfaces

Abstract:We study the geometry and spectral theory of Weil-Petersson random surfaces with genus-$g$ and $n$ cusps in the large-$n$ limit. We show that for a random hyperbolic surface in $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ with $n$ large, the number of small Laplacian eigenvalues is linear in $n$ with high probability. By work of Ballmann, Matthiesen and Mondal [7], this result is optimal up to a multiplicative constant. We also study the relative frequency of simple and non-simple closed geodesics, showing that on random surfaces with many cusps, most closed geodesics with lengths up to $\log(n)$ scales are non-simple. Our main technical contribution is a novel large-$n$ asymptotic formula for the Weil-Petersson volume $V_{g,n}\left(\ell_{1},\dots,\ell_{k}\right)$ of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}\left(\ell_{1},\dots,\ell_{k}\right)$ of genus-$g$ hyperbolic surfaces with $k$ geodesic boundary components and $n-k$ cusps with $k$ fixed, building on work of Manin and Zograf [31].
