Abstract:In this note, we prove that the $\lceil \tfrac{1}{2} \sqrt{n} \log_2^2 n \rceil^{th}$ power of a connected $n$-vertex Eulerian digraph is Hamiltonian, and provide an infinite family of digraphs for which the $\lfloor \sqrt{n}/2 \rfloor^{th}$ power is not.

A Note on Hamiltonian-Intersecting Families of Graphs

Abstract:How many graphs on an $n$-point set can we find such that any two have connected intersection? Berger, Berkowitz, Devlin, Doppelt, Durham, Murthy and Vemuri showed that the maximum is exactly $1/2^{n-1}$ of all graphs. Our aim in this short note is to give a 'directed' version of this result; we show that a family of oriented graphs such that any two have strongly-connected intersection has size at most $1/3^n$ of all oriented graphs. We also show that a family of graphs such that any two have Hamiltonian intersection has size at most $1/2^n$ of all graphs, verifying a conjecture of the above authors.

Abstract:Hammack and Livesay introduced a new graph operation G((k)) for a graph G, which they called the kth inner power of G. A graph G is Hamiltonian if it contains a spanning cycle. In this paper, we show that C-n((k))(n >= 3, k >= 2) is Hamiltonian if and only if n is odd and k = 2, where C-n is the cycle with n vertices.

Abstract:Given an $n$-vertex digraph $D$ and a labeling $\sigma:V(D)\to [n]$, we say that an arc $u\to v$ of $D$ is a descent of $\sigma$ if $\sigma(u)>\sigma(v)$. Foata and Zeilberger introduced a generating function $A_D(t)$ for labelings of $D$ weighted by descents, which simultaneously generalizes both Eulerian polynomials and Mahonian polynomials. Motivated by work of Kalai, we look at problems related to $-1$ evaluations of $A_D(t)$. In particular, we give a combinatorial interpretation of $|A_D(-1)|$ in terms of "generalized alternating permutations" whenever the underlying graph of $D$ is bipartite.

Hamilton cycles in pseudorandom graphs

Abstract:Finding general conditions which ensure that a graph is Hamiltonian is a central topic in graph theory. An old and well known conjecture in the area states that any $d$-regular $n$-vertex graph $G$ whose second largest eigenvalue in absolute value $\lambda(G)$ is at most $\frac{d}{C}$, for some universal constant $C>0$, has a Hamilton cycle. In this paper, we obtain two main results which make substantial progress towards this problem. Firstly, we settle this conjecture in full when the degree $d$ is at least a small power of $n$. Secondly, in the general case we show that $\lambda(G) \leq \frac{d}{C(\log n)^{1/3}}$ implies the existence of a Hamilton cycle, improving the 20-year old bound of $\frac{d}{ \log^{1-o(1)} n}$ of Krivelevich and Sudakov. We use in a novel way a variety of methods, such as a robust Pósa rotation-extension technique, the Friedman-Pippenger tree embedding with rollbacks and the absorbing method, combined with additional tools and ideas. Our results have several interesting applications, giving best bounds on the number of generators which guarantee the Hamiltonicity of random Cayley graphs, which is an important partial case of the well known Hamiltonicity conjecture of Lovász. They can also be used to improve a result of Alon and Bourgain on additive patterns in multiplicative subgroups.

Abstract:We prove that for $r\in \mathbb{N}$ with $r\geq 2$ and $\mu>0$, there exist $\alpha>0$ and $n_{0}$ such that for every $n\geq n_{0}$, every $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $\delta(G)\geq \left(1-\frac{1}{r}+\mu\right)n$ and $\alpha(G)\leq \alpha n$ contains an $r$-th power of a Hamilton cycle. We also show that the minimum degree condition is asymptotically sharp for $r=2, 3$ and the $r=2$ case was recently conjectured by Staden and Treglown.

Abstract:We study the existence of a directed Hamilton cycle in random digraphs with $m$ edges where we condition on minimum in- and out-degree at least one. Denote such a random graph by $D_{n,m}^{(\delta\geq1)}$. A note on Hamilton decompositions of even-regular multigraphs

Abstract:In this note, we prove that every even regular multigraph on $n$ vertices with multiplicity at most $r$ and minimum degree at least $rn/2 + o(n)$ has a Hamilton decomposition. This generalises a result of Vaughan who proved an asymptotic version of the multigraph $1$-factorisation conjecture. We derive our result by proving a more general result which states that dense regular multidigraphs that are robust outexpanders have a Hamilton decomposition. This in turn is derived from the corresponding result of Kühn and Osthus about simple digraphs.

Abstract:We prove that for every $\varepsilon > 0$ there exists $n_0=n_0(\varepsilon)$ such that every regular oriented graph on $n > n_0$ vertices and degree at least $(1/4 + \varepsilon)n$ has a Hamilton cycle. This establishes an approximate version of a conjecture of Jackson from 1981. We also establish a result related to a conjecture of Kühn and Osthus about the Hamiltonicity of regular directed graphs with suitable degree and connectivity conditions.

Abstract:In 1965 Edmonds showed that every eulerian graph has a bi-eulerian embedding, i.e., an embedding with exactly two faces, each bounded by an euler circuit. We refine this result by giving conditions for a graph to have a bi-eulerian embedding that is specifically orientable or nonorientable. We give connections to the maximum genus problem for directed embeddings of digraphs, in which every face is bounded by a directed circuit. Given an eulerian digraph $D$ with all vertices of degree 2 mod 4 and a directed euler circuit $T$ of $D$, we show that $D$ has an orientable bi-eulerian directed embedding with one of the faces bounded by $T$; this is a maximum genus directed embedding. This result also holds when $D$ has exactly two vertices of degree $0$ mod $4$, provided they are interlaced by $T$. More generally, if $D$ has $\ell$ vertices of degree 0 mod 4, we can find an orientable directed embedding with a face bounded by $T$ and with at most $\ell+1$ other faces. We show that given an eulerian graph $G$ and a circuit decomposition $C$ of $G$, there is an nonorientable embedding of $G$ with the elements of $C$ bounding faces and with one additional face bounded by an euler circuit, unless every block of $G$ is a cycle and $C$ is the collection of cycles of $G$. In particular, every eulerian graph that is not edgeless or a cycle has a nonorientable bi-eulerian embedding with a given euler circuit $T$ bounding one of the faces. Polynomial-time algorithms giving the specified embeddings are implicit in our proofs.

Abstract:Given a finite group G and an integer t , let G(φt/G) be the directed graph with vertex set G and directed edges g→gt,g∈G . We prove that nilpotent groups are precisely the class of groups yielding a special symmetry on the graphs G(φt/G) that has appeared several times in the literature (considering functions over various algebraic structures). We then explore the question on when two finite nilpotent groups yield the same digraphs as t runs over Z : this defines an equivalence relation ∼φ . We completely describe the set of integers M in which the relation ∼φ is equivalent to the isomorphism of groups when one restricts to the set of nilpotent groups of order M . Our proofs rely on arguments from number theory and combinatorics.

Abstract:The Eulerian extension number of any graph~$H$ (i.e. the minimum number of edges needed to be added to make~$H$ Eulerian) is at least~$t(H),$ half the number of odd degree vertices of~$H.$ In this paper we consider an inhomogenous random graph~$G$ whose edge probabilities need not all be the same and use an iterative probabilistic method to obtain sufficient conditions for the Eulerian extension number of~$G$ to grow \emph{linearly} with~$t(G).$ We derive our conditions in terms of the average edge probabilities and edge density and also briefly illustrate our result with an example.

Abstract:For $\Delta$ a finite connected nontrivial directed multigraph, we prove: 1. $\Delta$ has a directed circuit using each directed edge exactly once if and only if both each pair of distinct vertices of $\Delta$ occur in a common directed circuit and in-degree$({\bf x}) =$ out-degree$({\bf x})$ for every vertex ${\bf x}$. 2. $\Delta$ contains a non-circuit directed path which uses every directed edge exactly once if and only if both every pair of distinct vertices of $\Delta$ occur in a common directed circuit and there are vertices ${\bf b \not= e}$ such that in-degree$({\bf e}) -$ out-degree$({\bf e}) = 1 =$ out-degree$({\bf b}) -$ in-degree$({\bf b})$ but, for every vertex ${\bf x \notin \{b,e\}}$, it happens that in-degree$({\bf x}) =$ out-degree$({\bf x})$.

Abstract:In this note it is proven that there exist infinitely many positive integers a and b such that the Cartesian product of a directed cycle of length 2 a and a directed cycle of length 2 b is non‐Hamiltonian. In particular, the Cartesian product of an 880‐dicycle and a 4368‐dicycle is non‐Hamiltonian. We also prove that there is no such graph on fewer than 880 ⋅ 4368 = 3 , 843 , 840 vertices, which is rather astonishing.

Generalized Eulerian Numbers and Directed Friends-and-seats Graphs

Abstract:Let $A(n,m)$ denote the Eulerian numbers, which count the number of permutations on $[n]$ with exactly $m$ descents, or, due to the Foata transform, the number of permutations on $[n]$ with exactly $m$ excedances. Friends-and-seats graphs, also known as friends-and-strangers graphs, are a seemingly unrelated recent construction in graph theory. In this paper, we introduce directed friends-and-seats graphs and establish a connection between these graphs and a generalization of the Eulerian numbers. We use this connection to reprove and extend a Worpitzky-like identity on generalized Eulerian numbers.

A new sufficient condition for a 2-strong digraph to be Hamiltonian

Abstract:In this paper we prove the following new sufficient condition for a digraph to be Hamiltonian: {\it Let $D$ be a 2-strong digraph of order $n\geq 9$. If $n-1$ vertices of $D$ have degrees at least $n+k$ and the remaining vertex has degree at least $n-k-4$, where $k$ is a non-negative integer, then $D$ is Hamiltonian}. This is an extension of Ghouila-Houri's theorem for 2-strong digraphs and is a generalization of an early result of the author (DAN Arm. SSR (91(2):6-8, 1990). The obtained result is best possible in the sense that for $k=0$ there is a digraph of order $n=8$ (respectively, $n=9$) with the minimum degree $n-4=4$ (respectively, with the minimum $n-5=4$) whose $n-1$ vertices have degrees at least $n-1$, but it is not Hamiltonian. We also give a new sufficient condition for a 3-strong digraph to be Hamiltonian-connected.

Abstract:It is shown that Euler's theorem for graphs can be generalized for 2-complexes. Two notions that generalize cycle and Eulerian tour are introduced (``circlet'' and ``Eulerian cover''), and we show that for a strongly-connected, pure 2-complex, the following are equivalent: (i) each edge meets a positive even number of 2-cells (faces), (ii) the complex can be decomposed as the face-disjoint union of circlets, and (iii) the complex has an Eulerian cover. A number of examples are provided.

Abstract:For integers $k\geq 1$ and $n\geq 2k+1$, the Schrijver graph $S(n,k)$ has as vertices all $k$-element subsets of $[n]:=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ that contain no two cyclically adjacent elements, and an edge between any two disjoint sets. More generally, for integers $k\geq 1$, $s\geq 2$, and $n \geq sk+1$, the $s$-stable Kneser graph $S(n,k,s)$ has as vertices all $k$-element subsets of $[n]$ in which any two elements are in cyclical distance at least $s$. We prove that all the graphs $S(n,k,s)$, in particular Schrijver graphs $S(n,k)=S(n,k,2)$, admit a Hamilton cycle that can be computed in time $\mathcal{O}(n)$ per generated vertex.
