Abstract:In this paper we prove the following new sufficient condition for a digraph to be Hamiltonian: {\it Let $D$ be a 2-strong digraph of order $n\geq 9$. If $n-1$ vertices of $D$ have degrees at least $n+k$ and the remaining vertex has degree at least $n-k-4$, where $k$ is a non-negative integer, then $D$ is Hamiltonian}. This is an extension of Ghouila-Houri's theorem for 2-strong digraphs and is a generalization of an early result of the author (DAN Arm. SSR (91(2):6-8, 1990). The obtained result is best possible in the sense that for $k=0$ there is a digraph of order $n=8$ (respectively, $n=9$) with the minimum degree $n-4=4$ (respectively, with the minimum $n-5=4$) whose $n-1$ vertices have degrees at least $n-1$, but it is not Hamiltonian. We also give a new sufficient condition for a 3-strong digraph to be Hamiltonian-connected.

Abstract:Let D be a digraph and C be a cycle in D. For any two vertices x and y in D, the distance from x to y is the minimum length of a path from x to y. We denote the square of Let $D$ be a digraph and $C$ be a cycle in $D$. For any two vertices $x$ and $y$ in $D$, the distance from $x$ to $y$ is the minimum length of a path from $x$ to $y$. We denote the square of the cycle $C$ to be the graph whose vertex set is $V(C)$ and for distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ in $C$, there is an arc from $x$ to $y$ if and only if the distance from $x$ to $y$ in $C$ is at most $2$. The reverse square of the cycle $C$ is the digraph with the same vertex set as $C$, and the arc set $A(C)\cup \{yx: \mbox{the vertices}\ x, y\in V(C)\ \mbox{and the distance from $x$ to $y$ on $C$ is $2$}\}$. In this paper, we show that for any real number $\gamma>0$ there exists a constant $n_0=n_0(\gamma)$, such that every digraph on $n\geq n_0$ vertices with the minimum in- and out-degree at least $(2/3+\gamma)n$ contains the reverse square of a Hamiltonian cycle. Our result extends a result of Czygrinow, Kierstead and Molla.

Abstract:We prove that for every $\varepsilon > 0$ there exists $n_0=n_0(\varepsilon)$ such that every regular oriented graph on $n > n_0$ vertices and degree at least $(1/4 + \varepsilon)n$ has a Hamilton cycle. This establishes an approximate version of a conjecture of Jackson from 1981. We also establish a result related to a conjecture of Kühn and Osthus about the Hamiltonicity of regular directed graphs with suitable degree and connectivity conditions.

Abstract:Inspired by Sheehan’s conjecture that no 4 4 -regular graph contains exactly one hamiltonian cycle, we prove results on hamiltonian cycles in regular graphs and nearly regular graphs. We fully disprove a conjecture of Haythorpe on the minimum number of hamiltonian cycles in regular hamiltonian graphs, thereby extending a result of Zamfirescu, as well as correct and complement Haythorpe’s computational enumerative results from [Exp. Math. 27 (2018), no. 4, 426–430]. Thereafter, we use the Lovász Local Lemma to extend Thomassen’s independent dominating set method. This extension allows us to find a second hamiltonian cycle that inherits linearly many edges from the first hamiltonian cycle. Regarding the limitations of this method, we answer a question of Haxell, Seamone, and Verstraete, and settle the first open case of a problem of Thomassen by showing that for k ∈ { 5 , 6 } k \in \{5, 6\} there exist infinitely many k k -regular hamiltonian graphs having no independent dominating set with respect to a prescribed hamiltonian cycle. Motivated by an observation of Aldred and Thomassen, we prove that for every κ ∈ { 2 , 3 } \kappa \in \{ 2, 3 \} and any positive integer k k , there are infinitely many non-regular graphs of connectivity κ \kappa containing exactly one hamiltonian cycle and in which every vertex has degree 3 3 or 2 k 2k .

Abstract:Finding general conditions which ensure that a graph is Hamiltonian is a central topic in graph theory. An old and well known conjecture in the area states that any $d$-regular $n$-vertex graph $G$ whose second largest eigenvalue in absolute value $\lambda(G)$ is at most $\frac{d}{C}$, for some universal constant $C>0$, has a Hamilton cycle. In this paper, we obtain two main results which make substantial progress towards this problem. Firstly, we settle this conjecture in full when the degree $d$ is at least a small power of $n$. Secondly, in the general case we show that $\lambda(G) \leq \frac{d}{C(\log n)^{1/3}}$ implies the existence of a Hamilton cycle, improving the 20-year old bound of $\frac{d}{ \log^{1-o(1)} n}$ of Krivelevich and Sudakov. We use in a novel way a variety of methods, such as a robust Pósa rotation-extension technique, the Friedman-Pippenger tree embedding with rollbacks and the absorbing method, combined with additional tools and ideas. Our results have several interesting applications, giving best bounds on the number of generators which guarantee the Hamiltonicity of random Cayley graphs, which is an important partial case of the well known Hamiltonicity conjecture of Lovász. They can also be used to improve a result of Alon and Bourgain on additive patterns in multiplicative subgroups.

Abstract:We present a tight extremal threshold for the existence of Hamilton cycles in graphs with large minimum degree and without a large ``bipartite hole`` (two disjoint sets of vertices with no edges between them). This result extends Dirac's classical theorem, and is related to a theorem of Chvátal and Erdős. In detail, an $(s, t)$-bipartite-hole in a graph $G$ consists of two disjoint sets of vertices $S$ and $T$ with $|S|= s$ and $|T|=t$ such that there are no edges between $S$ and $T$; and $\widetilde{\alpha}(G)$ is the maximum integer $r$ such that $G$ contains an $(s, t)$-bipartite-hole for every pair of non-negative integers $s$ and $t$ with $s + t = r$. Our central theorem is that a graph $G$ with at least $3$ vertices is Hamiltonian if its minimum degree is at least $\widetilde{\alpha}(G)$. From the proof we obtain a polynomial time algorithm that either finds a Hamilton cycle or a large bipartite hole. The theorem also yields a condition for the existence of $k$ edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles. We see that for dense random graphs $G(n,p)$, the probability of failing to contain many edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles is $(1 - p)^{(1 + o(1))n}$. Finally, we discuss the complexity of calculating and approximating $\widetilde{\alpha}(G)$.

Abstract:The hamiltonian problem is an important topic in structural graph theory, which is closely related to Four Color Problem. Hence lots of graph scholars are dedicated to this topic. There are many authors working for finding some sufficient conditions for hamiltonian property of graphs. Let G be a claw-free graph with n vertices and δ(G)≥3. In this paper, we show that if G has an induced cycle of length more than (4n – 2δ(G)–4)(δ(G)+2)−1, then G is hamiltonian. The result is best possible if δG is 3 or 4.

Abstract:In this note it is proven that there exist infinitely many positive integers a and b such that the Cartesian product of a directed cycle of length 2 a and a directed cycle of length 2 b is non‐Hamiltonian. In particular, the Cartesian product of an 880‐dicycle and a 4368‐dicycle is non‐Hamiltonian. We also prove that there is no such graph on fewer than 880 ⋅ 4368 = 3 , 843 , 840 vertices, which is rather astonishing.

Algorithmic Extensions of Dirac's Theorem

Abstract:In 1952, Dirac proved the following theorem about long cycles in graphs with large minimum vertex degrees: Every $n$-vertex $2$-connected graph $G$ with minimum vertex degree $\delta\geq 2$ contains a cycle with at least $\min\{2\delta,n\}$ vertices. In particular, if $\delta\geq n/2$, then $G$ is Hamiltonian. The proof of Dirac's theorem is constructive, and it yields an algorithm computing the corresponding cycle in polynomial time. The combinatorial bound of Dirac's theorem is tight in the following sense. There are 2-connected graphs that do not contain cycles of length more than $2\delta+1$. Also, there are non-Hamiltonian graphs with all vertices but one of degree at least $n/2$. This prompts naturally to the following algorithmic questions. For $k\geq 1$,

Abstract:Cohen et al. conjectured that for every oriented cycle $C$ there exist an integer $f(C)$ such that every strong $f(C)$-chromatic digraph contains a subdivision of $C$. El Joubbeh confirmed this conjecture for Hamiltonian digraphs. Indeed, he showed that every $3n$-chromatic Hamiltonian digraph contains a subdivision of every oriented cycle of order $n$. In this article, we improve this bound to $2n$. Furthermore, we show that, if $D$ is a digraph containing a Hamiltonian directed path with chromatic number at least $12n-5$, then $D$ contains a subdivision of every oriented cycle of order $n$. Note that a digraph containing a Hamiltonian directed path need not be strongly connected. Thus, our current result provides a deeper understanding of the condition that may be needed to fully solve the conjecture.

Abstract:An $n$-vertex graph is Hamiltonian if it contains a cycle that covers all of its vertices, and it is pancyclic if it contains cycles of all lengths from $3$ up to $n$. In 1972, Erdős conjectured that every Hamiltonian graph with independence number at most $k$ and at least $n = \Omega(k^2)$ vertices is pancyclic. In this paper we prove this old conjecture in a strong form by showing that if such a graph has $n = (2+o(1))k^2$ vertices, it is already pancyclic, and this bound is asymptotically best possible.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that every 3-connected claw-free graph such that every induced cycle of length at least 4 has at most 8 edges contained in a triangle is hamiltonian. This implies that every 3-connected $\{K_{1,3}\}\cup \{C_i|i\ge 9\}$-free graph is hamiltonian. We also show that every 3-connected o-heavy graph whose induced cycle of length is at most 8 is hamiltonian and that every 2-connected claw-free graph of longest induced cycle with length at least $n-2$ is hamiltonian. These results are all best possible. As a byproduct, we show that it is NP-complete to determine the length of a longest induced cycle of a line graph.
Connectivity Preserving Hamiltonian Cycles in $k$-Connected Dirac Graphs

Abstract:We show that for $k \geq 2$, there exists a function $f(k) = O(k)$ such that every $k$-connected graph $G$ of order $n \geq f(k)$ with minimum degree at least $\frac{n}{2}$ contains a Hamiltonian cycle $H$ such that $G-E(H)$ is $k$-connected. Applying Nash-Williams' result on edge-disjoint Hamiltonian cycles, we also show that for $k \geq 2$ and $\ell \geq 2$, there exists a function $g(k,\ell) = O(k\ell)$ such that every $k$-connected graph $G$ of order $n \geq g(k,\ell)$ with minimum degree at least $\frac{n}{2}$ contains $\ell$ edge-disjoint Hamiltonian cycles $H_1,H_2,\ldots,H_\ell$ such that $G-\cup_{1 \leq i \leq \ell}E(H_i)$ is $k$-connected. As a corollary, we have a statement that refines the result of Nash-Williams for $k$-connected graphs with $k \leq 8$. Moreover, when the connectivity of $G$ is exactly $k$, a similar result with an improved lower bound on $n$ can be shown, which does not depend on the result of Nash-Williams.

Hamiltonicity of Sparse Pseudorandom Graphs

Abstract:We show that every $(n,d,\lambda)$-graph contains a Hamilton cycle for sufficiently large $n$, assuming that $d\geq \log^{10}n$ and $\lambda\leq cd$, where $c=\frac{1}{9000}$. This significantly improves a recent result of Glock, Correia and Sudakov, who obtain a similar result for $d$ that grows polynomially with $n$. The proof is based on the absorption technique combined with a new result regarding the second largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of a subgraph induced by a random subset of vertices. We believe that the latter result is of an independent interest and will have further applications.

Abstract:Given any digraph $D$, let $\mathcal{P}(D)$ be the family of all directed paths in $D$, and let $H$ be a digraph with the arc set $A(H)=\{a_1, \ldots, a_k\}$. The digraph $D$ is called arbitrary Hamiltonian $H$-linked if for any injective mapping $f: V(H)\rightarrow V(D)$ and any integer set $\mathcal{N}=\{n_1, \ldots, n_k\}$ with $n_i\geq4$ for each $i\in\{1, \ldots, k\}$, there exists a mapping $g: A(H)\rightarrow \mathcal{P}(D)$ such that for every arc $a_i=uv$, $g(a_i)$ is a directed path from $f(u)$ to $f(v)$ of length $n_i$, and different arcs are mapped into internally vertex-disjoint directed paths in $D$, and $\bigcup_{i\in[k]}V(g(a_i))=V(D)$. In this paper, we prove that for any digraph $H$ with $k$ arcs and $\delta(H)\geq1$, every digraph of sufficiently large order $n$ with minimum in- and out-degree at least $n/2+k$ is arbitrary Hamiltonian $H$-linked. Furthermore, we show that the lower bound is best possible. Our main result extends some work of Kühn and Osthus et al. \cite{20081,20082} and Ferrara, Jacobson and Pfender \cite{Jacobson}. Besides, as a corollary of our main theorem, we solve a conjecture of Wang \cite{Wang} for sufficiently large graphs.
