Abstract:The heat pulse experiment is a well-known method for determining thermal diffusivity. However, neither the measurement nor the evaluation methodologies are straightforward for heterogeneous, highly porous materials. In the present paper, we focus on two open-cell carbon foam types, differing in their porosity but having the same size. Recent experiments showed that a non-Fourier behaviour, called 'over-diffusive' propagation, is probably present for such a complex structure. The (continuum) Guyer-Krumhansl equation stands as a promising candidate to model such transient thermal behaviour. In order to obtain a reliable evaluation and thus reliable thermal parameters, we utilize a novel, state-of-the-art evaluation procedure developed recently using an analytical solution of the Guyer-Krumhansl equation. Based on our observations, it turned out that the presence of high porosity alone is necessary but not satisfactory for non-Fourier behaviour. Additionally, the mentioned non-Fourier effects are porosity-dependent. However, porous samples can also follow the Fourier law. These data serve as a basis to correctly identify the characteristic heat transfer mechanisms and their corresponding time scales, which altogether result in the present non-Fourier behaviour. Keywords: flash experiments, non-Fourier heat conduction, highly porous carbon foams.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the challenges encountered in thermal modeling in highly porous carbon foam materials. Specifically, the paper focuses on the fact that in these materials, the traditional Fourier's law of heat conduction may not accurately describe their transient thermal behavior, especially the non - Fourier (or super - diffusion) phenomena observed in high - porosity materials. Through experimental and theoretical analysis, the paper explores the possibility of using the Guyer - Krumhansl (GK) equation to more accurately describe the heat transfer process in these complex structures. The GK equation is a "double - diffusion" model that can introduce two characteristic time scales, thereby better simulating the interaction between different heat transfer mechanisms. ### Main research questions: 1. **Non - Fourier heat conduction phenomena**: The paper explores whether there are non - Fourier heat conduction phenomena in high - porosity carbon foam materials and attempts to determine the characteristics of such phenomena. 2. **Application of the GK equation**: It is studied whether the GK equation can be an effective model for describing the transient thermal behavior of these materials. 3. **Determination of effective thermal parameters**: Using experimental data, the GK equation is utilized to determine the effective thermal parameters of the materials, such as thermal diffusivity, relaxation time and intrinsic length scale, etc. 4. **Applicability and limitations of the model**: The advantages and limitations of the GK equation compared to the traditional Fourier model are evaluated, especially its applicability in dealing with complex porous materials. ### Research background: - **Experimental method**: The flash heat pulse method is used to measure the thermal diffusivity of the materials. - **Material characteristics**: Two open - cell carbon foam materials with different porosities are studied. They have the same size but different internal structures. - **Experimental results**: For the high - porosity ERG sample, the Fourier equation can well describe its thermal behavior; while for the higher - density AllCompLD sample, obvious non - Fourier effects are observed and the GK equation is required for more accurate description. ### Key findings: - **Porosity - dependence of non - Fourier effects**: High porosity itself is a necessary but not sufficient condition for the generation of non - Fourier effects. The increase in porosity will affect the degree of non - Fourier effects. - **Effectiveness of the GK equation**: The GK equation can more accurately describe the transient thermal behavior of the AllCompLD sample, especially in the initial rapid transient stage. - **Calculation of effective thermal parameters**: The effective thermal diffusivity determined by the GK equation can be used for further heat conduction simulation and can provide reliable thermal parameters even when detailed modeling is not required. ### Conclusion: Through experimental and theoretical analysis, the paper verifies the effectiveness of the GK equation in describing the transient thermal behavior of high - porosity carbon foam materials, providing new methods and ideas for the thermal modeling of such materials. This not only helps to understand the heat transfer mechanisms of these materials, but also provides an important reference for thermal management in practical applications.
