Abstract:Cold electropolishing (EP) of a nitrogen-doped (N-doped) niobium (Nb) superconducting RF (SRF) cavity was found to improve its quality factor. In order to understand the effect of EP temperature on N-doped and undoped surfaces, a systematic EP study was conducted with 2/0 N-doped and heat-treated Nb samples in a beaker. The Nb samples were electropolished at different surface temperatures ranging from 0 to 42 C. The results showed that the doped surface was susceptible to the sample temperature during EP. EP resulted in the surface pitting on the doped samples where the number density of pits increased at a higher temperature. The surface results were compared with the surface of cutouts from a 9-cell cavity which was 2/0 N-doped and electropolished. This paper shows de-tailed surface features of the N-doped and undoped Nb surfaces electropolished at different temperatures.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the influence of different temperatures on surface characteristics, especially on the formation of surface pits, during the cold electropolishing (EP) process on nitrogen - doped (N - doped) and undoped niobium (Nb) surfaces. Specifically, the research aims to: 1. **Understand the influence of electropolishing temperature on the surface characteristics of nitrogen - doped and undoped niobium**: By electropolishing 2/0 nitrogen - doped and heat - treated niobium samples at different temperatures, observe the changes in the number density and depth of surface pits. 2. **Explore the relationship between bubble generation and surface pit formation during the electropolishing process**: Analyze the position and trajectory of bubble generation to determine whether bubbles are the main cause of surface pit formation. 3. **Compare the differences between samples and the actual superconducting cavity surface**: By comparing the surface of the electropolished sample with the surface of the sample cut from the 9 - cell superconducting cavity, understand the surface characteristics in practical applications and their possible reasons. 4. **Optimize electropolishing parameters**: Based on the experimental results, discuss how to reduce the formation of surface pits by adjusting the temperature and voltage of electropolishing, thereby improving the performance of the superconducting cavity. Through these studies, the author hopes to provide a more in - depth understanding and optimization suggestions for future superconducting cavity surface treatment.
