Abstract:We develop a bundle theory of presheaves on small categories, based on similar work by Brent Everitt and Paul Turner. For a certain set of presheaves on posets, we produce a Leray-Serre type spectral sequence that gives a reduction property for the cohomology of the presheaf. This extends the usual cohomological reduction of posets with a unique maximum.

Abstract:Quillen's fundamental spectral sequences relate André-Quillen homology and cohomology to Tor and Ext functors. The five-term exact sequences arising from these spectral sequences are leveraged to characterize regular and complete intersection local rings. Despite their immense importance in the theory of André-Quillen homology and cohomology, these spectral sequences are not treated in the literature as they merit. A sketchy argument with gaps for a special case of the first spectral sequence appears in an unpublished manuscript of Quillen, while the second spectral sequence is only stated without proof in another paper of Quillen. A rigorous proof of the spectral sequences requires a delicate investigation of the subtle structures involved. The goal of this expository article is to present a comprehensive and detailed proof of Quillen's fundamental spectral sequences in a readable and well-structured manner.

Abstract:In this survey paper, we present Čech and sheaf cohomologies -- themes that were presented by Koszul in University of São Paulo during his visit in the late 1950s -- we present expansions for categories of generalized sheaves (i.e, Grothendieck toposes), with examples of applications in other cohomology theories and other areas of mathematics, besides providing motivations and historical notes. We conclude explaining the difficulties in establishing a cohomology theory for elementary toposes, presenting alternative approaches by considering constructions over quantales, that provide structures similar to sheaves, and indicating researches related to logic: constructive (intuitionistic and linear) logic for toposes, sheaves over quantales, and homological algebra.

Abstract:We study homotopy theory of the category of spectral sequences with respect to the class of weak equivalences given by maps which are quasi-isomorphisms on a fixed page. We introduce the category of extended spectral sequences and show that this is bicomplete by analysis of a certain linear presheaf category modelled on discs. We endow the category of extended spectral sequences with various model category structures, restricting to give the almost Brown category structures on spectral sequences of our earlier work. One of these has the property that spectral sequences is a homotopically full subcategory. By results of Meier, this exhibits the category of spectral sequences as a fibrant object in the Barwick-Kan model structure on relative categories, that is, it gives a model for an infinity category of spectral sequences. We also use the presheaf approach to define two décalage functors on spectral sequences, left and right adjoint to a shift functor, thereby clarifying prior use of the term décalage in connection with spectral sequences.

Abstract:We first introduce global arithmetic cohomology groups for quasi-coherent sheaves on arithmetic varieties, adopting an adelic approach. Then, we establish fundamental properties, such as topological duality and inductive long exact sequences, for these cohomology groups on arithmetic surfaces. Finally, we expose basic structures for ind-pro topologies on adelic spaces of arithmetic surfaces. In particular, we show that these adelic spaces are topologically self-dual.

Abstract:Many important theorems in differential topology relate properties of manifolds to properties of their underlying homotopy types -- defined e.g. using the total singular complex or the Čech nerve of a good open cover. Upon embedding the category of manifolds into the $\infty$-topos $\mathbf{Diff}^\infty$ of differentiable sheaves one gains a further notion of underlying homotopy type: the shape of the corresponding differentiable sheaf. In a first series of results we prove using simple cofinality and descent arguments that the shape of any manifold coincides with many other notions of underlying homotopy types such as the ones mentioned above. Our techniques moreover allow for computations, such as the homotopy type of the Haefliger stack, following Carchedi. This leads to more refined questions, such as what it means for a mapping differential sheaf to have the correct shape. To answer these we construct model structures as well as more general homotopical calculi on the $\infty$-category $\mathbf{Diff}^\infty$ (which restrict to its full subcategory of $0$-truncated objects,$\mathbf{Diff}^\infty_{\leq 0}$) with shape equivalences as the weak equivalences. These tools are moreover developed in such a way so as to be highly customisable, with a view towards future applications, e.g. in geometric topology. Finally, working with the $\infty$-topos $\mathbf{Diff}^0$ of sheaves on topological manifolds, we give new and conceptual proofs of some classical statements in algebraic topology. These include Dugger and Isaksen's hypercovering theorem, and the fact that the Quillen adjunction between simplicial sets and topological spaces is a Quillen equivalence.

Failures of Compositionality: A Short Note on Cohomology, Sheafification and Lavish Presheaves

Abstract:In many sciences one often builds large systems out of smaller constituent parts. Mathematically, to study these systems, one can attach data to the component pieces via a functor F. This is of great practical use if F admits a compositional structure which is compatible with that of the system under study (i.e. if the local data defined on the pieces can be combined into global data). However, sometimes this does not occur. Thus one can ask: (1) Does F fail to be compositional? (2) If so, can this failure be quantified? and (3) Are there general tools to fix failures of compositionality? The kind of compositionality we study in this paper is one in which one never fails to combine local data into global data. This is formalized via the understudied notion of what we call a lavish presheaf: one that satisfies the existence requirement of the sheaf condition, but not uniqueness. Adapting Čech cohomology to presheaves, we show that a presheaf has trivial zeroth presheaf-Čech cohomology if and only if it is lavish. In this light, cohomology is a measure of the failure of compositionality. The key contribution of this paper is to show that, in some instances, cohomology can itself display compositional structure. Formally, we show that, given any Abelian presheaf F : C^op --> A and any Grothendieck pretopology J, if F is flasque and separated, then the zeroth cohomology functor H^0(-,F) : C^op --> A is lavish. This follows from observation that, for separated presheaves, H^0(-,F) can be written as a cokernel of the unit of the adjunction given by sheafification. This last fact is of independent interest since it shows that cohomology is a measure of ``distance'' between separated presheaves and their closest sheaves (their sheafifications). On the other hand, the fact that H^0(-,F) is a lavish presheaf has unexpected algorithmic consequences.

For instance, we discuss its functoriality (in particular its behaviour along étale maps), the support morphism to $\mathrm{Sym}^n(X)$, and its relationship with the Quot scheme of points $\mathrm{Quot}_X(\mathcal E,n)$ for fixed $\mathcal E\in \mathrm{Coh}(X)$.

Abstract:We categorify the inclusion–exclusion principle for partially ordered topological spaces and schemes to a filtration on the derived category of sheaves. As a consequence, we obtain functorial spectral sequences that generalize the two spectral sequences of a stratified space and certain Vassiliev-type spectral sequences; we also obtain Euler characteristic analogs in the Grothendieck ring of varieties. As an application, we give an algebro-geometric proof of Vakil and Wood's homological stability conjecture for the space of smooth hypersurface sections of a smooth projective variety. In characteristic zero this conjecture was previously established by Aumonier via topological methods.

Abstract:This paper presents a gentle introduction to cohomology vanishing theorems, largely based on the paper work of Hongshan Li. It offers an insightful exploration of unitary local systems on complex manifolds, particularly focusing on their characteristics near normal crossing divisors. The Main Vanishing Theorem, demonstrating the vanishing of specific cohomology groups associated with unitary local systems, stands as a central result in this work. In our exposition, we delve into the interplay between local system theory, Hodge theory, and the geometry of complex manifolds. The canonical extensions of unitary local systems are examined in detail, providing a deeper understanding of their algebraic and geometric properties. The foundational aspects of these systems are thoroughly discussed, culminating in an in-depth analysis of their spectral sequences and the behavior of associated de Rham complexes. A pivotal aspect of the paper is the exploration of the spectral sequence associated with the Hodge filtration on de Rham complexes. Here, we establish its degeneration at the E1 stage and its implications for cohomology groups. This work also encompasses a thorough examination of the properties of Higgs bundles, particularly in the context of parabolic structures and semistability. The amalgamation of these diverse concepts and techniques contributes to a broader understanding of the complex interdependencies in the realm of unitary local systems and their cohomological properties.

Abstract:We compute Joyce's (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2111.04694" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2111.04694">arXiv:2111.04694</a>) enumerative invariants $[\mathcal{M}^{\mathrm{ss}}_{(r,d)}]_{\mathrm{inv}}$ for semistable rank $r$ degree $d$ coherent sheaves on a complex projective curve. These invariants are a generalization of the fundamental class of the moduli of semistable sheaves. We express the invariants as a regularized sum, which is a way to assign finite values to divergent series, and we obtain explicit expressions for the invariants. From these invariants, one can extract cohomology pairings on the moduli of semistable sheaves. When $r$ and $d$ are coprime, formulae for such pairings were found by Witten and proved by Jeffrey and Kirwan. Our results provide a new point of view on this classical problem, and can be seen as a generalization of this to the case when $r$ and $d$ are not coprime.

Let $M$ be the supertorus obtained by quotienting $\mathbb{C}^{1 \mid n}$ by the abelian group generated by the maps $S: (z,\theta_1, \dots, \theta_n) \mapsto (z + 1, \theta_1, \dots, \theta_n)$ and $T: (z, \theta_1, \dots, \theta_n) \mapsto (z + t, \theta_1 + \alpha_1, \dots, \theta_n + \alpha_n)$ where $t \in \mathbb{C}$ has positive imaginary part and $\alpha_1, \dots, \alpha_n$ are independent fermionic parameters. We compute the zeroth and first cohomology groups of the structure sheaf $\mathcal{O}$ of $M$ as doubly graded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-modules, exhibiting an instance of Serre duality between these groups. We use skein relations and noncrossing matchings to give a combinatorial presentation of $H^0(M,\mathcal{O})$ in terms of generators and relations.

Spectral sequences in unstable higher homotopy theory and applications to the Coniveau filtration

Abstract:With the aim of understanding Morel's result on the $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy sheaves over a field, one extends the theory of unstable spectral sequences of Bousfield and Kan in the $\infty$-categorical setting. With this natural extension, parallel to the classical formalism of 'cohomology theory with supports', we introduce the notion of 'cohomotopy theory with supports'. We extend the Bloch-Ogus-Gabber theorem for Cohomology theory with supports to that of unstable setting, to obtain unstable Gersten (or Cousin) resolutions associated to the coniveau filtration, under suitable assumptions. We apply this theory to motivic homotopy, Nisnevich-local torsors, and Artin-Mazur étale homotopy type.

Abstract:We give an account of well known calculations of the RO(Q)-graded coefficient rings of some of the most basic Q-equivariant cohomology theories, where Q is a group of order 2. One purpose is to advertise the effectiveness of the Tate square, showing it has advantages over the slice spectral sequences in algebraically simple cases. A second purpose is to give a single account showing how to translate between the languages of different approaches.
