Abstract:Datasets of online communication often take the form of contact sequences -- ordered lists contacts (where a contact is defined as a triple of a sender, a recipient and a time). We propose measures of attractiveness and activity for such data sets and analyze these quantities for anonymized contact sequences from an Internet dating community. For this data set the attractiveness and activity measures show broad power-law like distributions. Our attractiveness and activity measures are more strongly correlated in the real-world data than in our reference model. Effects that indirectly can make active users more attractive are discussed.

Abstract:This is an informal summary of the main concepts in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0905.4044" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0905.4044">arXiv:0905.4044</a>, based on notes of various seminars. It gives constructions of higher and derived stacks without recourse to the extensive theory developed by Toen, Vezzosi and Lurie. Explicitly, higher stacks are described in terms of simplicial diagrams of affine schemes, which are analogous to atlases for manifolds. We also describe quasi-coherent sheaves and complexes on such objects.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a definition of the moduli stack of stable relative ideal sheaves, and prove that it is a separated and proper Deligne-Mumford stack. It is the first part of the project of relative Donaldson-Thomas theory of ideal sheaves on projective threefolds, which in the end provides a degeneration formula of Donaldson-Thomas invariants of threefolds.

For instance, we discuss its functoriality (in particular its behaviour along étale maps), the support morphism to $\mathrm{Sym}^n(X)$, and its relationship with the Quot scheme of points $\mathrm{Quot}_X(\mathcal E,n)$ for fixed $\mathcal E\in \mathrm{Coh}(X)$.

Abstract:We compute Joyce's (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2111.04694" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2111.04694">arXiv:2111.04694</a>) enumerative invariants $[\mathcal{M}^{\mathrm{ss}}_{(r,d)}]_{\mathrm{inv}}$ for semistable rank $r$ degree $d$ coherent sheaves on a complex projective curve. These invariants are a generalization of the fundamental class of the moduli of semistable sheaves. We express the invariants as a regularized sum, which is a way to assign finite values to divergent series, and we obtain explicit expressions for the invariants. From these invariants, one can extract cohomology pairings on the moduli of semistable sheaves. When $r$ and $d$ are coprime, formulae for such pairings were found by Witten and proved by Jeffrey and Kirwan. Our results provide a new point of view on this classical problem, and can be seen as a generalization of this to the case when $r$ and $d$ are not coprime.

Abstract:I demonstrate that, under certain circumstances, regions of negative energy density can undergo gravitational collapse into a black hole. The resultant exterior black hole spacetimes necessarily have negative mass and non-trivial topology. A full theory of quantum gravity, in which topology-changing processes take place, could give rise to such spacetimes.

Abstract:In this survey we provide an overview of some recent developments in the construction of moduli spaces using stack-theoretic techniques. We will also explain the analogue of Harder-Narasimhan stratifications for general stacks, known as $\Theta$-stratifications. As an application of the ideas exposed here, we address the moduli problem of principal bundles over higher dimensional projective varieties, as well as its different compactifications by the so-called principal $\rho$-sheaves. We construct a stratification by instability types whose lower strata admits a proper good moduli space of ``Gieseker semistable" objects and a new Gieseker-type Harder-Narasimhan filtration for these objects. Detailed proofs of the latter results will appear elsewhere.

A decomposition theorem for the affine Springer fibers

Abstract:According to Laumon, an affine Springer fiber is homeomorphic to the universal abelian covering of the compactified Jacobian of a spectral curve. We construct equivariant deformations $f_{n}:\overline{\mathcal{P}}_{n}\to \mathcal{B}_{n}$ of the finite abelian coverings of this compactified Jacobian, and decompose the complex $Rf_{n,*}\mathbf{Q}_{\ell}$ as direct sum of intersection complexes. Pass to the limit, we obtain a similar expression for the homology of the affine Springer fibers. A quite surprising consequence is that we can reduce the homology to its $\Lambda^{0}$-invariant subspace. As an application, we get a sheaf-theoretic reformulation of the purity hypothesis of Goresky, Kottwitz and MacPherson. In an attempt to solve it, we propose a conjecture about the punctural weight of the intermediate extension of a smooth $\ell$-adic sheaf of pure weight.
