Abstract:Lurie's theorem states that there exists a sheaf of ring spectra on the site of formally étale Deligne--Mumford stacks over the moduli stack of $p$-divisible groups of height $n$, which agrees with the classical Landweber exact functor theorem (LEFT) on affines. In other words, this theorem is a global, higher categorical refinement of the LEFT. In recent work, Lurie has introduced many of the ingredients one needs to prove this theorem, and in this article, we gather these ingredients together and prove Lurie's theorem. Applications of this theorem to Lubin--Tate theories, topological modular and automorphism forms, and Adams operations are also discussed.

Abstract:We introduce a sheaf theoretic viewpoint on functional analysis designed for infinite dimensional Lie group actions. We develop functional calculus for Banach valued functors and, in particular, prove the existence of an exponential map for a certain class of operators that generalise first order partial differential operators. This algebraic framework can be used in dynamical systems and KAM theory to provide normal forms and versal deformations. it is used in our papers on the subject such as the Herman conjecture paper, the versal deformation theorem for vector fields etc.

Sectional number of a morphism

Abstract:The genus of a fibration was introduced by Schwarz in 1962. Given a continuous map $g:A\to B$, the usual sectional number $\text{sec}_u(g)$ is the least integer~$m$ such that $B$ can be covered by $m$ open subsets, each of which admits a local section of~$g$. Likewise, the sectional category $\text{secat}(g)$ is the least integer~$m$ such that $B$ can be covered by $m$ open subsets, each of which admits a local homotopy section of~$g$. In the case that $g$ is a fibration, the usual sectional number and the sectional category of $g$ coincide with the Schwarz's genus of $g$. In this paper, we introduce a notion of sectional number for a morphism in a category with covers, which extends the usual sectional number and sectional category (and, of course, Schwarz's notion). We study the invariance property, the behaviour under weak pullbacks and continuous functors, and present upper bounds in terms of a notion of LS category and projective covering number for an object. In addition, we introduce a notion of multiplicative cohomology theory on a category with covers, and we use it to present a cohomological lower bound for the sectional number. Several examples of this invariant are presented to support this theory. For instance, our sectional number yields a family of new numerical invariants in Top; we also express the twin prime conjecture and Goldbach's conjecture in terms of sectional numbers in the category of sets. Our unified concept is relevant in this new setting because it provides a foundation for sectional theory in category theory and builds bridges between new areas in mathematics.

Abstract:As is well known, the Lefschetz theorems for the étale fundamental group of quasi-projective varieties do not hold. We fill a small gap in the literature showing they do for the tame fundamental group. Let XX be a regular projective variety over a field kk, and let D↪XD\hookrightarrow X be a strict normal crossings divisor. Then, if YY is an ample regular hyperplane intersecting DD transversally, the restriction functor from tame étale coverings of X∖DX\setminus D to those of Y∖D∩YY\setminus D\cap Y is an equivalence if dimension X≥3X \geq 3, and is fully faithful if dimension X=2X=2. The method is dictated by work of Grothendieck and Murre (1971). They showed that one can lift tame coverings from Y∖D∩YY\setminus D\cap Y to the complement of D∩YD\cap Y in the formal completion of XX along YY. One has then to further lift to X∖DX\setminus D.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a higher covering diagram in a base $\infty$-category $\mathcal{C}$. The theory of higher covering diagrams in $\mathcal{C}$ will be shown to recover various descent conditions known from the $\infty$-categorical literature in a uniform manner. In fact, higher covering diagrams always assemble to what we refer to as a structured colimit pre-topology on the base $\mathcal{C}$. It hence always defines a sub-canonical sheaf theory over $\mathcal{C}$, and indeed defines the canonical such whenever $\mathcal{C}$ has pullbacks. This ``higher geometric'' sheaf theory will be shown to differ from the usual infinitary-coherent sheaf theory by a cotopological localization whenever $\mathcal{C}$ is infinitary-coherent itself. We prove that this localization is generally non-trivial. For instance, every $\infty$-topos is the theory of higher geometric sheaves over itself, but the according infinitary-coherent sheaf theory over it is generally strictly larger. The higher geometric sheaves are hence characterized by a limit preservation property that is generally not captured by the classical sheaf condition. We define an $\infty$-category of higher geometric $\infty$-categories, and show that the (opposite of the) $\infty$-category of $\infty$-toposes embeds fully faithfully therein. We show that the higher $\kappa$-geometric sheaf theory on a higher $\kappa$-geometric $\infty$-category defines the free $\infty$-topos generated by it, and consequently that it faithfully generalizes Lurie's definition of a ``sheaf'' over an $\infty$-topos.

Abstract:We analyse infinitesimal deformations of morphisms of locally free sheaves on a smooth projective variety $X$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. In particular, we describe a differential graded Lie algebra controlling the deformation problem. As an application, we study infinitesimal deformations of pairs given by a locally free sheaf and a subspace of it sections with a view towards Brill-Noether theory.

Abstract:We provide a calculus of mates for functors to the $\infty$-category of $\infty$-categories and extend Lurie's unstraightening equivalences to show that (op)lax natural transformations correspond to maps of (co)cartesian fibrations that do not necessarily preserve (co)cartesian edges. As a sample application we obtain an equivalence between lax symmetric monoidal structures on right adjoint functors and oplax symmetric monoidal structures on the left adjoint functors between symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories that is compatible with both horizontal and vertical composition of such structures. As the technical heart of the paper we study various new types of fibrations over a product of two $\infty$-categories. In particular, we show how they can be dualised over one of the two factors and how they encode functors out of the Gray tensor product of $(\infty, 2)$-categories.

An analytic approach to Lefschetz and Morse theory on stratified pseudomanifolds

Abstract:We develop an analytic framework for Lefschetz fixed point theory and Morse theory for Hilbert complexes on stratified pseudomanifolds. We develop formulas for both global and local Lefschetz numbers and Morse, Poincaré polynomials as (polynomial) supertraces over cohomology groups of Hilbert complexes, developing techniques for relating local and global quantities using heat kernel and Witten deformation based methods. We focus on the case where the metric is wedge and the Hilbert complex is associated to a Dirac-type operator and satisfies the Witt condition, constructing Lefschetz versions of Bismut-Cheeger $\mathcal{J}$ forms for local Lefschetz numbers of Dirac operators, with specialized formulas for twisted de Rham, Dolbeault and spin$^{\mathbb{C}}$ Dirac complexes as supertraces of geometric endomorphisms on cohomology groups of local Hilbert complexes. We construct geometric endomorphisms to define de Rham Lefschetz numbers for some self-maps for which the pullback does not induce a bounded operator on $L^2$ forms. A de Rham Witten instanton complex is constructed for Witt spaces with stratified Morse functions, proving Morse inequalities related to other results in the literature including Goresky and MacPherson's in intersection cohomology. We also prove a Lefschetz-Morse inequality for geometric endomorphisms on the instanton complex that is new even on smooth manifolds. We derive $L^2$ Lefschetz-Riemann-Roch formulas, which we compare and contrast with algebraic versions of Baum-Fulton-Quart. In the complex setting, we derive Lefschetz formulas for spin Dirac complexes and Hirzebruch $\chi_y$ genera which we relate to signature, self-dual and anti-self-dual Lefschetz numbers, studying their properties and applications including instanton counting. We compute these invariants in various examples with different features, comparing with versions in other cohomology theories.

Abstract:Inspired by some recent work of M. Farber, W. Lück and M. Shubin on L2 homotopy invariants of infinite Galois coverings of simplicial complexes (L2 Betti numbers and Novikov-Shubin invariants), this article extends Atiyah's L2 index theory to coherent analytic sheaves on complex analytic spaces. Let $X$ be a complex analytic space with a proper cocompact biholomorphic action of a discrete group $G$. Let $F$ be a $G$-equivariant coherent analytic sheaf on $X$. We give a meaningful notion of a L2 section of $F$ on $X$. We also construct L2 cohomology groups. We prove that these L2 cohomology groups belong to an abelian category of topological $G$-modules introduced by M. Farber. On this category there are two kinds of invariants: Von Neumann dimension and Novikov-Shubin invariants. The alternating sum of the Von Neumann dimensions of the L2 cohomology groups of $F$ can be computed by an analogue of Atiyah's L2 index theorem. Novikov-Shubin invariants show up when the L2 cohomology groups are non-Hausdorff and, like in algebraic topology, are still very intriguing (and not very well understood).

Abstract:We prove the Lefschetz hyperplane section theorem using a simpler machinery by making the observation that we can compose the Lefschetz Pencil with a Real Morse function to get a map from the variety to $\mathbb{R}$ which is "close" to being a Real Morse function. The proof uses a new method unlike the conventional one which uses vanishing cycles, thimbles and monodromy. We prove the genus formula for plane curves using Morse theory, Lefschetz pencil and Bézout's theorem. And then we prove the Riemann Hurwitz formula for ramified maps between curves by employing techniques from deformation theory. Lastly, we prove the Lefschetz Hyperplane Section Theorem solely using Real Morse Theory and exact sequences.

Abstract:We lift the affine Matsuki correspondence between real and symmetric loop group orbits in affine Grassmannians to an equivalence of derived categories of sheaves. In analogy with the finite-dimensional setting, our arguments depend upon the Morse theory of energy functions obtained from symmetrizations of coadjoint orbits. The additional fusion structures of the affine setting lead to further equivalences with Schubert constructible derived categories of sheaves on real affine Grassmannians.

Abstract:Grothendieck toposes are studied via the process of taking the associated Sl‐enriched category of relations. It is shown that this process is adjoint to that of taking the topos of sheaves of an abstract category of relations. As a result, pullback and comma toposes are calculated in a new way. The calculations are used to give a new characterization of localic morphisms and to derive interpolation and conceptual completeness properties for a certain class of interpretations between geometric theories. A simple characterization of internal sup‐lattices in terms of external Sl‐enriched category theory is given.

Abstract:In an earlier paper (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2212.11163" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2212.11163">arXiv:2212.11163</a>) I constructed a complex of differential forms on a local $C^\infty$-ringed space. In this paper I define a sheaf of vector fields (``the tangent sheaf'') on a local $C^\infty$-ringed space, define contractions of vector fields and forms, Lie derivatives of forms with respect to vector fields, and show that the standard equations of Cartan calculus hold for vector fields and differential forms on local $C^\infty$-ringed spaces.

Abstract:Let $f: X \to \mathbb{A}^1$ be a regular function on a smooth complex algebraic variety $X$. We formulate and prove an equivalence between the algebraic formal twisted de Rham complex of $f$ and the vanishing cycles with respect to $f$ as objects in the category of sheaves valued in the derived $\infty$-category of modules over $\widehat{\mathscr{E}}_{\mathbb{C},0}^{\mathrm{alg}}$, the ring of germs of algebraic formal microdifferential operators. This is a direct generalization of Kontsevich's conjecture, proven in work by Sabbah and then Sabbah--Saito, of an algebraic formula computing vanishing cohomology. The novelty in our approach is the introduction of a canonical $V$-filtration on the derived $\infty$-category of regular holonomic $\mathscr{D}_{\mathbb{C},0}$-modules, and the use of various techniques from the theory of higher categories and higher algebra in the context of the subject of microdifferential calculus.
