Abstract:We pose a normal form of transition functions along some Levi-flat hypersurfaces obtained by suspension. By focusing on methods in circle dynamics and linearization theorems, we give a sufficient condition to obtain a normal form as a geometrical analogue of Arnol'd's linearization theorem.

Abstract:Let $H \subset {\mathbb P}^n$ be a real-analytic subvariety of codimension one induced by a real-analytic curve in the Grassmannian $G(n+1,n)$. Assuming $H$ has a global defining function, we prove $H$ is Levi-flat, the closure of its smooth points of top dimension is a union of complex hyperplanes, and its singular set is either of dimension $2n-2$ or dimension $2n-4$. If the singular set is of dimension $2n-4$, then we show the hypersurface is algebraic and the Levi-foliation extends to a singular holomorphic foliation of ${\mathbb P}^n$ with a meromorphic (rational of degree 1) first integral. In this case, $H$ is in some sense simply a complex cone over an algebraic curve in ${\mathbb P}^1$. Similarly if $H$ has a degenerate singularity, then $H$ is also algebraic. If the dimension of the singular set is $2n-2$ and is nondegenerate, we show by construction that the hypersurface need not be algebraic nor semialgebraic. We construct a Levi-flat real-analytic subvariety in ${\mathbb P}^2$ of real codimension 1 with compact leaves that is not contained in any proper real-algebraic subvariety of ${\mathbb P}^2$. Therefore a straightforward analogue of Chow's theorem for Levi-flat hypersurfaces does not hold.

Abstract:We study singular real-analytic Levi-flat hypersurfaces in complex projective space. We define the rank of an algebraic Levi-flat hypersurface and study the connections between rank, degree, and the type and size of the singularity. In particular, we study degenerate singularities of algebraic Levi-flat hypersurfaces. We then give necessary and sufficient conditions for a Levi-flat hypersurface to be a pullback of a real-analytic curve in $\mathbb{C}$ via a meromorphic function. Among other examples, we construct a nonalgebraic semianalytic Levi-flat hypersurface with compact leaves that is a perturbation of an algebraic Levi-flat variety.

Abstract:We study the singular set of a singular Levi-flat real-analytic hypersurface. We prove that the singular set of such a hypersurface is Levi-flat in the appropriate sense. We also show that if the singular set is small enough, then the Levi-foliation extends to a singular codimension one holomorphic foliation of a neighborhood of the hypersurface.

Abstract:Real-analytic Levi-flat codimension two CR singular submanifolds are a natural generalization to ${\mathbb{C}}^m$, $m > 2$, of Bishop surfaces in ${\mathbb{C}}^2$. Such submanifolds for example arise as zero sets of mixed-holomorphic equations with one variable antiholomorphic. We classify the codimension two Levi-flat CR singular quadrics, and we notice that new types of submanifolds arise in dimension 3 or greater. In fact, the nondegenerate submanifolds, i.e. higher order purturbations of $z_m=\bar{z}_1z_2+\bar{z}_1^2$, have no analogue in dimension 2. We prove that the Levi-foliation extends through the singularity in the real-analytic nondegenerate case. Furthermore, we prove that the quadric is a (convergent) normal form for a natural large class of such submanifolds, and we compute its automorphism group. In general, we find a formal normal form in ${\mathbb{C}}^3$ in the nondegenerate case that shows infinitely many formal invariants.

Abstract:We consider a family of Levi-degenerate finite type hypersurfaces in $\mathbb C^2$, where in general there is no group structure. We lift these domains to stratified Lie groups via a constructive proof, which optimizes the well-known lifting procedure to free Lie groups of general manifolds defined by Rothschild and Stein. This yields an explicit version of the Taylor expansion with respect to the horizontal vector fields induced by the sub-Riemannian structure on these hypersurfaces. Hence, as an application, we establish the Schatten class estimates for the commutator of the Cauchy--Szegö projection with respect to a suitable quasi-metric defined on the hypersurface.

Abstract:Local conditions on boundaries of $C^\infty$ Levi-flat hypersurfaces, in case the boundary is a generic submanifold, are studied. For nontrivial real analytic boundaries we get an extension and uniqueness result, which forces the hypersurface to be real analytic. This allows us to classify all real analytic generic boundaries of Levi-flat hypersurfaces in terms of their normal coordinates. For the remaining case of generic real analytic boundary we get a weaker extension theorem. We find examples to show that these two extension results are optimal. Further, a class of nowhere minimal real analytic submanifolds is found, which is never the boundary of even a $C^2$ Levi-flat hypersurface.

Abstract:We prove the smoothness of the L^2-analytic torsion form on some fiber bundles with non-compact fibers of positive Novikov-Shubin invariant. We do so by generalizing the arguments of Azzali-Goette-Schick to an appropriate Sobolev space, and proving that the Novikov-Shubin invariant remains positive in the Sobolev settings, using an argument of Alvarez Lopez-Kordyukov.

Abstract:Let $(X,\alpha)$ be a Kahler manifold of dimension n, and let $[\omega] \in H^{1,1}(X,\mathbb{R})$. We study the problem of specifying the Lagrangian phase of $\omega$ with respect to $\alpha$, which is described by the nonlinear elliptic equation \[ \sum_{i=1}^{n} \arctan(\lambda_i)= h(x) \] where $\lambda_i$ are the eigenvalues of $\omega$ with respect to $\alpha$. When $h(x)$ is a topological constant, this equation corresponds to the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills (dHYM) equation, and is related by Mirror Symmetry to the existence of special Lagrangian submanifolds of the mirror. We introduce a notion of subsolution for this equation, and prove a priori $C^{2,\beta}$ estimates when $|h|>(n-2)\frac{\pi}{2}$ and a subsolution exists. Using the method of continuity we show that the dHYM equation admits a smooth solution in the supercritical phase case, whenever a subsolution exists. Finally, we discover some stability-type cohomological obstructions to the existence of solutions to the dHYM equation and we conjecture that when these obstructions vanish the dHYM equation admits a solution. We confirm this conjecture for complex surfaces.

Moving plane method for varifolds and applications

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a version of the moving plane method that applies to potentially quite singular hypersurfaces, generalizing the classical moving plane method for smooth hypersurfaces. Loosely speaking, our version for varifolds shows that smoothness and symmetry at infinity (respectively at the boundary) can be promoted to smoothness and symmetry in the interior. The key feature, in contrast with the classical formulation of the moving plane principle, is that smoothness is a conclusion rather than an assumption. We implement our moving plane method in the setting of compact varifolds with smooth boundary and in the setting of complete varifolds. A key ingredient is a Hopf lemma for stationary and CMC-varifolds. Our Hopf lemma provides a new tool to establish smoothness of varifolds, and works in arbitrary dimensions and without any stability assumptions. As applications of our new moving plane method, we prove varifold uniqueness results for the catenoid, spherical caps, and Delaunay surfaces that are inspired by classical uniqueness results by Schoen, Alexandrov, Meeks and Korevaar-Kusner-Solomon. We also prove a varifold version of Alexandrov's Theorem for compact CMC-varifolds in hyperbolic space.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the problem of constructing a smooth Levi-flat hypersurface locally or globally attached to a real codimension two submanifold in $\mathbb C^{n+1}$, or more generally in a Stein manifold, with elliptic CR singularities, a research direction originated from a fundamental and classical paper of E. Bishop. Earlier works along these lines include those by many prominent mathematicians working both on complex analysis and geometry. We prove that a compact smooth (or, real analytic) real codimension two submanifold $M$, that is contained in the boundary of a smoothly bounded strongly pseudoconvex domain, with a natural and necessary condition called CR non-minimal condition at CR points and with two elliptic CR singular points bounds a smooth-up-to-boundary (real analytic-up-to-boundary, respectively) Levi-flat hypersurface $\widehat{M}$. This answers a well-known question left open from the work of Dolbeault-Tomassini-Zaitsev, or a generalized version of a problem already asked by Bishop in 1965. Our study here reveals an intricate interaction of several complex analysis with other fields such as symplectic geometry and foliation theory.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a Stein manifold of dimension at least 3. Given a compact codimension 2 real analytic submanifold $M$ of $X$, that is the boundary of a compact Levi-flat hypersurface $H$, we study the regularity of $H$. Suppose that the CR singularities of $M$ are an $\mathcal{O}(X)$-convex set. For example, suppose $M$ has only finitely many CR singularities, which is a generic condition. Then $H$ must in fact be a real analytic submanifold. If $M$ is real algebraic, it follows that $H$ is real algebraic and in fact extends past $M$, even near CR singularities. To prove these results we provide two variations on a theorem of Malgrange, that a smooth submanifold contained in a real analytic subvariety of the same dimension is itself real analytic. We prove a similar theorem for submanifolds with boundary, and another one for subanalytic sets.

Abstract:Let $f:N\rightarrow (M,g)$ be an oriented (or spin), complete, stable, minimal, immersed hypersurface. In this paper we establish various vanishing theorems for the space of $L^2$-harmonic forms and spinors (in the spin case) under suitable positive curvature assumptions on the ambient manifold. Our results in the setting of forms extend to higher dimensions and more general ambient Riemannian manifolds previous vanishing theorems due to Tanno \cite{Tanno} and Zhu \cite{Zhu}. In the setting of spin manifolds our results allow to conclude, for instance, that any oriented, complete, stable, minimal, immersed hypersurface of $\mathbb{R}^m$ or $\mathbb{S}^m$ carries no non-trivial $L^2$-harmonic spinors. Finally, analogous results are proved for strongly stable constant mean curvature hypersurfaces.

Abstract:In this paper we have considered the linearly-degenerate characteristics transformation (LDCT) for hyperbolic conservation laws. For most numerical schemes, difficulty arises in resolving the slip line. With LDCT, however, the slip line becomes axis-paralleled, and hence it can be exactly resolved by ordinary numerical gridding. In particular, it reduces to the Generalized Lagrangian Formulation, posed by Hui et al, when applied to the Euler equations (2-D steady or 1-D unsteady). Investigation for higer dimension has also been made.

Abstract:Let f:Td -> Td be an Anosov diffeomorphism whose linearization A is an element of GL(d,Z) is irreducible. Assume that f is also absolutely partially hyperbolic where a weak stable subbundle is considered as the center subbundle. We show that if the strong stable subbundle and the unstable subbundle are jointly integrable, then f is dynamically coherent and all foliations match corresponding linear foliation under the conjugacy to the linearization A. Moreover, f admits the finest dominated splitting in the weak stable subbundle with dimensions matching those for A$A$, and it has spectral rigidity along all these subbundles. In dimension 4, we also obtain a similar result by grouping the weak stable and unstable subbundles together as a center subbundle and assuming joint integrability of the strong stable and unstable subbundles. As an application, we show that for every symplectic diffeomorphism f is an element of Diff(omega)(2)(T-4) that is C-1-close to an irreducible nonconformal automorphism A is an element of Sp(4,Z), the extremal subbundles of f$f$ are jointly integrable if and only if f is smoothly conjugate to A$A$.

Abstract:We introduce and study a notion of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity suitable for rational normal scroll surfaces. In this setting we prove analogs of some classical properties. We prove splitting criteria for coherent sheaves and a characterization of Ulrich bundles. Finally we study logarithmic bundles associated to arrangements of lines and rational curves.
