Abstract:We introduce and study the analytic relative Jacobian sheaf for a Lagrangian fibration of a hyperkähler manifold. When the fibration has irreducible fibers in codimension 1 and a relative principal polarization, we show that it is isomorphic to the relative Albanese sheaf which acts on the Lagrangian fibration. We apply this to OG10 Lagrangian fibrations associated to a smooth cubic fourfold constructed by Laza-Saccà-Voisin and Saccà. For sufficiently general cubic fourfolds, we compute the Tate-Shafarevich group parametrizing twists of the original Lagrangian fibration in terms of certain degree twists and Brauer twists. Among the main tools we use are perverse sheaves, decomposition theorem, Hodge modules and Deligne cohomology.

Abstract:We give a description of the intermediate Jacobian fibration attached to a general complex cubic fourfold $X$ containing a plane as a Lagrangian subfibration of a moduli space of torsion sheaves on the K3 surface associated to $X$ up to a cover. To do so, we propose a general construction of Lagrangian fibrations in Prym varieties as subfibrations of Beauville-Mukai systems over some loci of nodal curves in linear systems on K3 surfaces.

Irrationality of the general smooth quartic $3$-fold using intermediate Jacobians

Abstract:We prove that the intermediate Jacobian of the Klein quartic $3$-fold $X$ is not isomorphic, as a principally polarized abelian variety, to a product of Jacobians of curves. As corollaries we deduce (using a criterion of Clemens-Griffiths) that $X$, as well as the general smooth quartic $3$-fold, is irrational. These corollaries were known: Iskovskih-Manin \cite{IM} proved that every smooth quartic $3$-fold is irrational. However, the method of proof here is different than that of \cite{IM} and is significantly simpler.

Abstract:We study the rationality of some geometrically rational three-dimensional conic and quadric surface bundles, defined over the reals and more general real closed fields, for which the real locus is connected and the intermediate Jacobian obstructions to rationality vanish. We obtain both negative and positive results, using unramified cohomology and birational rigidity techniques, as well as concrete rationality constructions.

Abstract:We undertake a study of conic bundle threefolds $\pi\colon X\to W$ over geometrically rational surfaces whose associated discriminant covers $\tilde{\Delta}\to\Delta\subset W$ are smooth and geometrically irreducible. First, we determine the structure of the group $\mathrm{CH}^2 X_{\overline{k}}$ of rational equivalence classes of curves. Precisely, we construct a Galois-equivariant group homomorphism from $\mathrm{CH}^2X_{\overline{k}}$ to a group scheme associated to the discriminant cover $\tilde{\Delta}\to \Delta$ of $X$. The target group scheme is a generalization of the Prym variety of $\tilde{\Delta}\to\Delta$ and so our result can be viewed as a generalization of Beauville's result that the algebraically trivial curve classes on $X_{\overline{k}}$ are parametrized by the Prym variety. We apply our structural result on curve classes to study the refined intermediate Jacobian torsor (IJT) obstruction to rationality introduced by Hassett--Tschinkel and Benoist--Wittenberg. The first case of interest is $W = \mathbb P^2$ and $\Delta$ is a smooth plane quartic. In this case, we show that the IJT obstruction characterizes rationality when the ground field has less arithmetic complexity (precisely, when the $2$-torsion in the Brauer group of the ground field is trivial). We also show that a hypothesis of this form is necessary by constructing, over any $k \subset\mathbb R$, a conic bundle threefold with $\Delta$ a smooth quartic where the IJT obstruction vanishes, yet $X$ is irrational over $k$.

Conic bundle threefolds differing by a constant Brauer class and connections to rationality

Abstract:A double cover $Y$ of $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^2$ ramified over a general $(2,2)$-divisor will have the structure of a geometrically standard conic bundle ramified over a smooth plane quartic $\Delta \subset \mathbb{P}^2$ via the second projection. These threefolds are rational over algebraically closed fields, but over nonclosed fields, including over $\mathbb{R}$, their rationality is an open problem. In this paper, we characterize rationality over $\mathbb{R}$ when $\Delta(\mathbb{R})$ has at least two connected components (extending work of M. Ji and the second author) and over local fields when all odd degree fibers of the first projection have nonsquare discriminant. We obtain these applications by proving general results comparing the conic bundle structure on $Y$ with the conic bundle structure on a well-chosen intersection of two quadrics. The difference between these two conic bundles is encoded by a constant Brauer class, and we prove that this class measures a certain failure of Galois descent for the codimension 2 Chow group of $Y$.

Abstract:We study the local geometry of the moduli space of intermediate Jacobians of $(2,2)$-threefolds in ${\mathbb P}^2 \times {\mathbb P}^2$. More precisely, we prove that a composition of the second fundamental form of the Siegel metric in $\mathcal A_9$ restricted to this moduli space, with a natural multiplication map is a nonzero holomorphic section of a vector bundle. We also describe its kernel. We use the two conic bundle structures of these threefolds, Prym theory, gaussian maps and Jacobian ideals.

Simplicity of some Jacobians with many automorphisms

Abstract:We study an explicit $(2g-1)$-dimensional family of Jacobian varieties of dimension $\frac{d-1}2(g-1)$, arising from quotient curves of unramified cyclic coverings of prime degree $d$ of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g\ge 2$. By using a deformation argument, we prove that the generic element of the family is simple. Furthermore, we completely describe their endomorphism algebra, and we show that they admit a rank $\frac{d-1}2-1$ group of non-polarized automorphisms. As an application of these results, we prove the generic injectivity of the Prym map for étale cyclic coverings of hyperelliptic curves of odd prime degree under some slight numerical restrictions. This result generalizes in several directions previous results on genus 2.

Abstract:We study a family of birational maps of smooth affine quadric 3-folds, {over the complex numbers}, of the form $x_1x_4-x_2x_3=$ constant, which seems to have some (among many others) interesting/unexpected characters: a) they are cohomologically hyperbolic, b) their second dynamical degree is an algebraic number but not an algebraic integer, and c) the logarithmic growth of their periodic points is strictly smaller than their algebraic entropy. These maps are restrictions of a polynomial map on $\mathbb{C}^4$ preserving each of the quadrics. The study in this paper is a mixture of rigorous and experimental ones, where for the experimental study we rely on Bertini which is a reliable and fast software for expensive numerical calculations in complex algebraic geometry.

Abstract:In this note, we examine the Jacobian ring description of the Hodge structure of zero loci of vector bundle sections on a class of ambient varieties. We consider a set of cohomological vanishing conditions that imply such a description, and we verify these conditions for some new cases. We also observe that the method can be directly extended to log homogeneous varieties. We apply the Jacobian ring to study the null varieties of period integrals and their derivatives, generalizing a result in [9] for projective spaces. As an additional application, we prove the Hodge conjecture for very generic hypersurfaces in certain generalized flag varieties.

Abstract:We prove a number of results to the general effect that, under obviously necessary numerical and determinant constraints, "most" morphisms between fixed bundles on a complex elliptic curve produce (co)kernels which can either be specified beforehand or else meet various rigidity constraints. Examples include: (a) for indecomposable $\mathcal{E}$ and $\mathcal{E'}$ with slopes and ranks increasing strictly in that order the space of monomorphisms whose cokernel is semistable and maximally rigid (i.e. has minimal-dimensional automorphism group) is open dense; (b) for indecomposable $\mathcal{K}$, $\mathcal{E}$ and stable $\mathcal{F}$ with slopes increasing strictly in that order and ranks and determinants satisfying the obvious additivity constraints the space of embeddings $\mathcal{K}\to \mathcal{E}$ whose cokernel is isomorphic to $\mathcal{F}$ is open dense; (c) the obvious mirror images of these results; (d) generalizations weakening indecomposability to semistability + maximal rigidity; (e) various examples illustrating the necessity of the assorted assumptions.

Abstract:We show that any continuous $\mathbf{C}$-linear Lie algebra splitting of the symbol map from the Atiyah algebra of a vector bundle on a complex manifold is given by a differential operator of order at most the rank of the bundle plus one. Bundles equipped with such a splitting can be thought of as \emph{infinitesimally equivariant} bundles, and our theorem implies these are, in a certain sense, in a categorical formal neighbourhood of vector bundles with a flat connection.

A complete theory of smoothable compactified Jacobians of nodal curves

Abstract:We introduce and study a new class of compactified Jacobians for nodal curves, that we call compactified Jacobians of vine type, or simply V-compactified Jacobians. This class is strictly larger than the class of classical compactified Jacobians, as constructed by Oda-Seshadri, Simpson, Caporaso and Esteves. We characterize V-compactified Jacobians as the compactified Jacobians that can arise as limits of Jacobians of smooth curves under a one-parameter smoothing of the nodal curve, extending previous works on fine compactified Jacobians by Pagani-Tommasi and Viviani to the case of all compactified Jacobians.

Abstract:Consider a smooth, projective family of canonically polarized varieties over a smooth, quasi-projective base manifold Y, all defined over the complex numbers. It has been conjectured that the family is necessarily isotrivial if Y is special in the sense of Campana. We prove the conjecture when Y is a surface or threefold. The proof uses sheaves of symmetric differentials associated to fractional boundary divisors on log canonical spaces, as introduced by Campana in his theory of Orbifoldes Geometriques. We discuss a weak variant of the Harder-Narasimhan Filtration and prove a version of the Bogomolov-Sommese Vanishing Theorem that take the additional fractional positivity along the boundary into account. A brief, but self-contained introduction to Campana's theory is included for the reader's convenience.

Jacobian schemes arising from hypersurface arrangements in $\mathbb P^n$

Abstract:Freeness is an important property of a hypersurface arrangement, although its presence is not well understood. A hypersurface arrangement in $\PP^n$ is free if $S/J$ is Cohen-Macaulay (CM), where $S = K[x_0,\ldots,x_n]$ and $J$ is the Jacobian ideal. We study three related unmixed ideals: $J^{top}$, the intersection of height two primary components, $\sqrt{J^{top}}$, the radical of $J^{top}$, and when the $f_i$ are smooth we also study $\sqrt{J}$. Under mild hypotheses, we show that these ideals are CM. This establishes a full generalization of an earlier result with Schenck from hyperplane arrangements to hypersurface arrangements. If the hypotheses fail for an arrangement in projective $3$-space, the Hartshorne-Rao module measures the failure of CMness. We establish consequences for the even liaison classes of $J^{top}$ and $\sqrt{J}$.

Abstract:For any positive integer $k$, let $X_k$ be a projective irreducible nodal curve with $k$ nodes. We show that the Betti numbers and the mixed Hodge numbers of the compactified Jacobian $\overline{J_{k}}$ of an irreducible nodal curve $X_k$ with $k$ nodes are the same as the Betti numbers and the mixed Hodge numbers of $J_0\times R^k$, where $J_0$ is the Jacobian of the normalisation of the irreducible nodal curve and $R$ denotes the rational nodal curve with one node. We prove it by constructing a topologically locally trivial family of projective varieties containing $\overline{J_{k}}$ and $J_0\times R^k$ as fibres.

Abstract:Let $V:f=0$ be a hypersurface of degree $d \geq 3$ in the complex projective space $\mathbb{P}^n$, $n \geq 3$, having only isolated singularities. Let $M(f)$ be the associated Jacobian algebra and $H: \ell=0$ be a hyperplane in $\mathbb{P}^n$ avoiding the singularities of $V$, but such that $V \cap H$ is singular. We related the Lefschetz type properties of the linear maps $\ell: M(f)_k \to M(f)_{k+1}$ induced by the multiplication by linear form $\ell$ to the singularities of the hyperplane section $V \cap H$. Similar results are obtained for the Jacobian module $N(f)$.
