Abstract:Recently, Xu and Zhou [2023] introduced a constructive approach for exploring computational hardness, proving that SAT requires exhaustive search. In light of certain misinterpretations concerning the contributions and proofs in that paper, we focus on providing detailed explanations in this work. We begin by delineating the core innovation of the constructive approach, shedding light on the pivotal concept of algorithm designability. We address the overlooked white-box diagonalization method and highlight the concept of an almost independent solution space. In response to specific misunderstandings, such as the concerns surrounding the assumptions of Lemma 3.1, we offer comprehensive clarifications aimed at improving the comprehension of the proof. We are grateful for the feedback received on our prior paper and hope this work can foster a more well-informed discussion.

Abstract:In this work, we summarize and critique the paper "Understanding SAT is in P" by Alejandro Sánchez Guinea [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1504.00337" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1504.00337">arXiv:1504.00337</a>]. The paper claims to present a polynomial-time solution for the NP-complete language 3-SAT. We show that Guinea's algorithm is flawed and does not prove 3-SAT is in P.

Abstract:In this paper, we examine the claims made by the paper "A polynomial-time algorithm for 3-SAT" by Lizhi Du. The paper claims to provide a polynomial-time algorithm for solving the NP-complete problem 3-SAT. In examining the paper's argument, we find a flaw in one of the main sections of its algorithm. We argue that this flaw causes the paper's algorithm to incorrectly decide that an infinite family of satisfiable 3-CNF boolean formulas are not satisfiable. Therefore, the paper does not establish that P = NP.

Abstract:In this paper, we examine Yangjun Chen's technical report titled ``The 2-MAXSAT Problem Can Be Solved in Polynomial Time'' [Che23], which revises and expands upon their conference paper of the same name [Che22]. Chen's paper purports to build a polynomial-time algorithm for the ${\rm NP}$-complete problem 2-MAXSAT by converting a 2-CNF formula into a graph that is then searched. We show through multiple counterexamples that Chen's proposed algorithms contain flaws, and we find that the structures they create lack properly formalized definitions. Furthermore, we elaborate on how the author fails to prove the correctness of their algorithms and how they make overgeneralizations in their time analysis of their proposed solution. Due to these issues, we conclude that Chen's technical report [Che23] and conference paper [Che22] both fail to provide a proof that ${\rm P}={\rm NP}$.

Abstract:Let F be a CNF formula with n variables and m clauses. F is 3-satisfiable if for any 3 clauses in F, there is a truth assignment which satisfies all of them. Lieberherr and Specker (1982) and, later, Yannakakis (1994) proved that in each 3-satisfiable CNF formula at least 23 of its clauses can be satisfied by a truth assignment. We improve this result by showing that every 3-satisfiable CNF formula F contains a subset of variables U, such that some truth assignment τ will satisfy at least 23m+13mU+ρn′ clauses, where m is the number of clauses of F, mU is the number of clauses of F containing a variable from U, n′ is the total number of variables in clauses not containing a variable in U, and ρ is a positive absolute constant. Both U and τ can be found in polynomial time.We use our result to show that the following parameterized problem is fixed-parameter tractable and, moreover, has a kernel with a linear number of variables. In 3-S-MaxSat-AE, we are given a 3-satisfiable CNF formula F with m clauses and asked to determine whether there is an assignment which satisfies at least 23m+k clauses, where k is the parameter.

We outline how the methods here do not admit trivial proofs and how past formalisation attempts are not sufficient. A Polynomial Time Bounded-error Quantum Algorithm for Boolean Satisfiability

Abstract:The aim of the paper is to answer a long-standing open problem on the relationship between NP and BQP. The paper shows that BQP contains NP by proposing a BQP quantum algorithm for the MAX-E3-SAT problem which is a fundamental NP-hard problem. Given an E3-CNF Boolean formula, the aim of the MAX-E3-SAT problem is to find the variable assignment that maximizes the number of satisfied clauses. The proposed algorithm runs in $O(m^2)$ for an E3-CNF Boolean formula with $m$ clauses and in the worst case runs in $O(n^6)$ for an E3-CNF Boolean formula with $n$ inputs. The proposed algorithm maximizes the set of satisfied clauses using a novel iterative partial negation and partial measurement technique. The algorithm is shown to achieve an arbitrary high probability of success of $1-\epsilon$ for small $\epsilon>0$ using a polynomial resources. In addition to solving the MAX-E3-SAT problem, the proposed algorithm can also be used to decide if an E3-CNF Boolean formula is satisfiable or not, which is an NP-complete problem, based on the maximum number of satisfied clauses.

Abstract:We designed and implemented an efficient tough random symmetric 3-SAT generator and propose two deterministic algorithms that efficiently generate 3-SAT instances with a unique solution. We quantify the first algorithms hardness in terms of CPU time, numbers of restarts, decisions, propagations, conflicts and conflicted literals that occur when a solver tries to solve 3-SAT instances. In this experiment, the clause variable ratio was chosen to be around the conventional critical phase transition number 4.24. The experiment shows that instances generated by our generator are significantly harder than instances generated by the Tough K-SAT generator. The two deterministic algorithms generate 3-SAT instances with the number of clauses scaling as 4n, where n is the number of variables, and (n+6), respectively. By combining these two algorithms along with a simple padding algorithm, we prove a hybrid algorithm that can generate n-variable instances with the number of clauses that scale between (n+6) and 7n(n-1)(n-2). Overall, all proposed SAT generators seek to explore unique difficult to solve SAT problems.

Abstract:Propositional satisfiability problem (SAT) is a fundamental problem both in theory and practice. In the area of software engineering, people employ various techniques, such as model checking, theorem proving, automated testing and so on, to ensure the quality of software. Those techniques are usually based on SAT solvers. The efficiency is an important criterion for a good SAT solver. Besides, the ability of producing proofs is also considered to be quite useful because it provides a mechanism that the correctness of checking result is guaranteed. Moreover, proofs can be used when calculating interpolation. In this paper, we investigate a new resolution based algorithm for solving SAT problem. The algorithm combines resolution and search. It resolves certain clauses when necessary and at the same time tries to find a valuation under which the formula evaluates to true. Information found in the process of searching for such a valuation is used to guide the resolution. The algorithm stops whenever a satisfying valuation is found or empty clause is generated. So, it terminates quickly for both satisfiable and unsatisfiable clauses. Compared with other resolution based algorithms, the experiment result shows that the number of resolutions and number of generated clauses are much less than directional resolution. Another major advantage of our algorithm is, once terminates, a proof can be easily generated with very low time complexity.

Abstract:Using both quasiphysical and quasisociological methods, in conjunction with an inheriting strategy, a new way strategy and a pardon strategy was proposed for efficiently solving the SAT problem. An intuitive explanation is given for the Bart Selman random walk strategy. A new algorithm, Solar, was devised by combining these strategies. The new algorithm is shown to be both faster and stabler than the heretofore best algorithm.

Abstract:In Computer Science, the Boolean Satisfiability Problem(SAT) is the problem of determining if there exists an interpretation that satisfies a given Boolean formula. SAT is one of the first problems that was proven to be NP-complete, which is also fundamental to artificial intelligence, algorithm and hardware design. This paper reviews the main algorithms of the SAT solver in recent years, including serial SAT algorithms, parallel SAT algorithms, SAT algorithms based on GPU, and SAT algorithms based on FPGA. The development of SAT is analyzed comprehensively in this paper. Finally, several possible directions for the development of the SAT problem are proposed.

How To Discover Short, Shorter, and the Shortest Proofs of Unsatisfiability: A Branch-and-Bound Approach for Resolution Proof Length Minimization

Abstract:Modern software for propositional satisfiability problems gives a powerful automated reasoning toolkit, capable of outputting not only a satisfiable/unsatisfiable signal but also a justification of unsatisfiability in the form of resolution proof (or a more expressive proof), which is commonly used for verification purposes. Empirically, modern SAT solvers produce relatively short proofs, however, there are no inherent guarantees that these proofs cannot be significantly reduced. This paper proposes a novel branch-and-bound algorithm for finding the shortest resolution proofs; to this end, we introduce a layer list representation of proofs that groups clauses by their level of indirection. As we show, this representation breaks all permutational symmetries, thereby improving upon the state-of-the-art symmetry-breaking and informing the design of a novel workflow for proof minimization. In addition to that, we design pruning procedures that reason on proof length lower bound, clause subsumption, and dominance. Our experiments suggest that the proofs from state-of-the-art solvers could be shortened by 30-60% on the instances from SAT Competition 2002 and by 25-50% on small synthetic formulas. When treated as an algorithm for finding the shortest proof, our approach solves twice as many instances as the previous work based on SAT solving and reduces the time to optimality by orders of magnitude for the instances solved by both approaches.

A new proof of Euclid's algorithm

Abstract:Our main result is a new proof of correctness of Euclid's algorithm. The proof is conducted in algorithmic theory of natural numbers Th3. A formula H is constructed that expresses the halting property of the algorithm. Next, the proof of H is is presented. In the proof we make use of inference rules of calculus of programs. The only formulas accepted without the proof are axioms of program calculus or axioms of the theory Th3. We complete our result by showing that the theorem on correctness of Euclid's algorithm can not be proved in any elementary theory of natural numbers.

Abstract:Query answering is an important problem in AI, database and knowledge representation. In this paper, we develop saturation-based Boolean conjunctive query answering and rewriting procedures for the guarded, the loosely guarded and the clique-guarded fragments. Our query answering procedure improves existing resolution-based decision procedures for the guarded and the loosely guarded fragments and this procedure solves Boolean conjunctive query answering problems for the guarded, the loosely guarded and the clique-guarded fragments. Based on this query answering procedure, we also introduce a novel saturation-based query rewriting procedure for these guarded fragments. Unlike mainstream query answering and rewriting methods, our procedures derive a compact and reusable saturation, namely a closure of formulas, to handle the challenge of querying for distributed datasets. This paper lays the theoretical foundations for the first automated deduction decision procedures for Boolean conjunctive query answering and the first saturation-based Boolean conjunctive query rewriting in the guarded, the loosely guarded and the clique-guarded fragments.

Between SAT and UNSAT: The Fundamental Difference in CDCL SAT

Abstract:The way CDCL SAT solvers find a satisfying assignment is very different from the way they prove unsatisfiability. We propose an explanation to the difference by identifying direct connections to the workings of some of the most important elements in CDCL solvers: the effects of restarts and VSIDS, and the roles of learned clauses. We give a wide range of concrete evidence that highlights the varying effects and roles of these elements. As a result, this paper also sheds a new light on the internal workings of CDCL. Based on our reasoning on the difference in solver behaviors, we present several ideas for optimizing SAT solvers for either SAT or UNSAT instances. We then show that we can achieve improvements on both SAT and UNSAT at the same time by judiciously exploiting the difference. We have implemented a hybrid idea mixing two different restart strategies on top of our new solver COMiniSatPS and observed substantial performance improvement.
