Abstract:Current work on using nanostructured carbon surfaces in supercapacitors and batteries to enable enhanced performance is discussed. The emphasis is on solid electrolyte based batteries and supercapacitors which can be flexible and change form factor. This is a new concept for energy storage systems driven by the requirements of next generation mobile communication devices which will be designed to supplement regular battery power with power from harvested energy. It will be shown that a new class of flexible supercapacitors and batteries can be realised through use of carbon electrodes with enhanced nanostructure. In particular Carbon nanohons (CNH) are considered. CNHs are formed in 'crushed' or 'origami -like' graphene sheets. They form into 10 -50 nm diameter particles with a high degree of open pores having high surface area and permeability. The variable spacing between 5nm -lnm of two graphene sheets in CNH introduces a new surface energy regime for intercollation of ions. Results from applying CNH in electrodes in supercapacitors and batteries are presented. The power density of a flexible supercapacitor, for example, can be increased very significantly by designing nanostructure into the carbon electrodes. The devices under consideration are aimed at powering mobile electronic and autonomous sensing systems. However, the potential of scaling of the technology to larger energy storage systems is viable.

Abstract:Carbon blacks are used in low temperature fuel cells as electrocatalyst supports to ensure electronic conductivity between the electrocatalyst and the current collector. They provide path for even gas distribution, for gas access to the electrocatalyst, and for the removal of products (gases and liquids). Principal objective of this study is to investigate the corrosive behavior of carbon blacks in conditions, which are typical for electrochemical systems like fuel cells, batteries, and electrolyzers. Carbon corrosion prevention is the basis of oxidation resistance of these materials. Physical and chemical changes during oxidation of these carbon blacks are being reviewed along with methodology for studying their corrosion in low-temperature fuel cell environment. Emphasis is being laid upon the need of proper methods of evaluation of the oxidation resistance of these carbon blacks. The ultimate goal of this work is to formulate oxidation-resistant carbon blacks, and to develop suitable technologies for their synthesis or modification.
Effect of Contact Type Between Anode and Carbonaceous Fuels on Direct Carbon Fuel Cell Reaction Characteristics

Abstract:The contact between the anode and the carbonaceous fuel has a strong effect on the direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC) reaction characteristics. These effects are experimentally investigated by measuring the electrochemical behavior of a detached anode, an anode in physical contact with the fuel and an anode with carbon deposited on the surface in a DCFC. The results show that for the detached type DCFC, the reaction characteristics are closely related to the anode gas. In an Ar atmosphere, the main anode reactions are the electrochemical reaction to produce O2 and the carbon gasification with the formed O2. In a CO2 atmosphere, the main anode reactions are the carbon gasification with CO2 and the electrochemical oxidization of the formed CO. For the physical contact type DCFC, the anode reaction mechanisms are the same as for the detached type DCFC with no electrochemical oxidization of carbon at the physical contact interface between the carbonaceous fuel and the anode. Thus, the increased contact does not result in better performance. The carbon-deposited type DCFC has better performance with a significant activation polarization due to the electrochemical oxidization of the deposited carbon.
Elucidating the Role of Carbon Conductive Additive in the Processing and Electrochemical Behavior of Surface-Modified Si Anodes

Abstract:In the present work, we explore the impact of conducting carbon on the processing of silicon (Si)-rich electrodes, their resulting cycling performance, and parasitic side reactions. We employed three different carbon additives, Super C45 (carbon black), Super C65 (carbon black), and TIMCAL C-NERGY KS 6L (graphite), with varying sizes and morphologies to determine how these parameters influence the structure and the electrochemical behavior of the cast electrodes. Raman mapping indicates that the improved performance achieved using C45 can be explained by the homogeneous distribution of Si and carbon, enabling the formation of continuous electrical pathways throughout the electrode. This finding aligns with the results of ζ potential measurements, which indicate that C45 can maintain more stable dispersions in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) compared with the other carbon additives. However, electrodes with C45 as the conducting agent exhibited increased parasitic side reactions, as evidenced by the leakage current obtained from voltage hold experiments. These side reactions can have adverse effects on the calendar life of the electrode. Furthermore, the Raman maps of the electrodes reveal heterogeneities in Si and carbon distribution with lower carbon content, especially with only 2% carbon. This drastically impacts the cyclability of the electrodes, with portions of the low-carbon electrodes that remain unable to undergo cycling even at slow rates (0.2 Ah g–1). Additionally, we found that slower formation rates are favored in the context of parasitic side reactions, although slower formation rates can potentially create thicker passivating films that could hinder Li+-ion transport. Therefore, we emphasize the need for an intricate balance in materials selection and cycling protocol for optimal electrode processing and electrochemical behavior.

Abstract:A general overview is presented on the advances in carbon nanotubes and carbon coatings as conductive networks in Silicon‐based anodes. It provides an in‐depth analysis of the percolation and mechanical mechanism of conductive networks, highlights the importance of flexible long‐range conductivity, and decouples the relationships between stress, interface stability, and electron/ion transfer. Silicon‐based anode has high theoretical capacity but suffers from poor electrical conductivity, large volume expansion, and unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Adding carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon coatings are both very effective methods for addressing the above issues. The intrinsic sp2 covalent structure endows CNTs with excellent electrical conductivity, mechanical strength, and chemical stability, which makes them suitable for various energy storage applications, such as in lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). Apart from the conductive network, CNTs can serve as current collectors, mechanical probes, and mechanical frameworks, and they have potential in the construction of next‐generation battery architectures. Carbon coatings are mixed ionic‐electronic conductors with good chemical stability that provide mechanical support and mitigate the volume expansion of Si‐based materials. This review outlines the advances in CNTs and carbon coatings as conductive networks in Si‐based anodes, as well as insights into their future development. Assessing the Reactivity of Hard Carbon Anodes: Linking Material Properties with Electrochemical Response Upon Sodium‐ and Lithium‐Ion Storage

Abstract:Hard carbon (HC) is the negative electrode (anode) material of choice for sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs). Despite its advantages in terms of cost and sustainability, a comprehensive understanding of its microstructure is not complete yet, thus hindering a rational design of high‐performance HC electrodes. In this study, rather than investigating how the precursor and synthesis method influence on the electrochemical properties of HC anodes, we examine the microstructure and surface chemistry of three optimized HC anodes obtained from different precursors by using different synthesis routes. The main goal is to evaluate the influence of the final materials properties (in their optimized state) on the electrochemical reactivity in lithium and sodium cells after a comprehensive structural characterization performed by means of X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and gas sorption measurements. The different electrochemical performance observed in terms of cycling stability and rate capability, and the stability of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formed on the various HCs have been comprehensively investigated. A correlation of the material properties with their electrochemical response upon sodium and lithium uptake and release is clarified. By comparing the Na‐ and Li‐ion storage behavior, a structure‐function relation is identified. Abstract:Platinum group metal-free (PGM-free) catalysts have been targeted as possible Earth Abundant Elements solution to many electrochemical energy conversion technologies. Special attention has been given to PGM-free electrocatalysis with atomically dispersed (AD) transition metal moieties decorated over nitrogen-doped carbonaceous materials (a.k.a. M-N-C catalysts). Major applications for M-N-Cs are in cathode catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). 1 These materials are employed across the pH-range: in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), biological (microbial) fuel cells (MFC) and alkaline, including anion/hydroxyl exchange membrane fuel cells (AFC, AEMFC/HEMFC). We have successfully introduced M-N-C catalysts synthesized by sacrificial support method (SSM) as a hard template approach based on high temperature pyrolysis. 2 In most cases a secondary pyrolysis is being performed to promote AD display of the transition metal. 3 This talk will address structure-to-property correlations for M-N-C catalysts in ORR based on electrochemical activity obtained in rotating ring-disk electrodes (RRDE) with those spectroscopic and microscopic observations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations of oxygen binding on AD transition metal. We will discuss the role of the AD transition metal, participation of the surface N-groups as co-catalysts/alternative active sites and the possible role of surface oxides as co-catalysts or hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties descriptor. M-N-C catalysts performance in single membrane electrode assembly (MEA) fuel cells will also be discussed in the context of its surface chemistry and materials structure/morphology. We will focus on local hydrophobicity of SSM-based M-N-C electrocatalystsand its impact on the MEA performance. A broad spectrum of AD transition metal decorated MNCs have been synthesized and evaluated for catalytic activity in ORR (and other processes). The use of such materials as “active supports” for highly dispersed platinum or platinum alloy nanoparticles will be discussed. Abstract:<p>Owing to their high efficiency and low emission, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are promising devices that directly convert various hydrocarbon fuels into electric power and chemical materials through catalytic oxidation. However, the broad and large-scale implementation of the technology is hindered by anode coking, which distinctively weakens electrochemical catalytic oxidation in anodes and causes serious passivation issues and even the failure of SOFC systems. Since surface coke can occur in a few seconds and within several nanometers of an anode surface, advanced <em>in situ</em> characterization methods and theoretical simulations are crucial to provide valuable insight into the evolution of surface structures and compositions in real time and at high spatial and temporal resolutions in this dynamic process. In this review, we highlighted the recent progress in the fundamental understanding of anode coking and considered the elementary steps, thermodynamics, kinetics and susceptible sites of coking. We also reviewed representative surface engineering approaches that enhance electrode durability under carbon-related atmospheres. Furthermore, the knowledge and methodology introduced in this paper are applicable to industrial operations, which often encounter carbon poisoning issues, including steam reforming of natural gas, styrene production from ethylbenzene, cracking reaction of heavy oil fractions, and solid acid alkylation.</p>

Highly active nitrogen – doped carbon nanostructures as electrocatalysts for bromine evolution reaction: A combined experimental and DFT study

Abstract:Electrocatalytic bromine evolution reaction (BER) is significant for bromine production, energy storage, and wastewater treatment applications. Previously reported electrocatalysts for BER either include unstable graphite anodes or precious metal-containing materials. To overcome their disadvantages, this work has proposed, for the first time, the use of nitrogen-doped carbon nanostructures (CNx) as anode catalysts for BER in acidic medium. In terms of BER activity, CNx outperforms both Vulcan Carbon and commercial 10 % Pt/C at bromide concentration as low as 0.025 M. CNx also exhibits high BER selectivity and remarkable stability at highly oxidizing potentials. Tafel slope was measured to be ∼ 120 mV/dec supporting a first electron transfer limiting step for BER on CNx. The high activity and stability of CNx is attributed to several nitrogen-doped carbon sites in its graphitic matrix, which have been examined using DFT. The inclusion of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) intermediates is critical to identify BER active sites accurately, as the most active sites (zigzag pyridinic, zigzag oxide, and pyrrolic oxide) proceed via a OH*-mediated Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism. For these sites, DFT predicts that the potential determining step is the first electron transfer to form Br* in agreement with the experimental Tafel slope. Comparison to post-reaction XPS shows good agreement between DFT predicted Br* structures. This work thus provides a direction for the rational design of CNx electrocatalysts for BER.

Abstract:The carbon reactions in the anode of deposited carbon fuel cells were studied experimentally and theoretically. Deposition experiments were conducted by decomposing methane in a thermogravimetric analyzer at 800°C, with both NiO or YSZ powders and small chips of an unused anode-supported SOFC button cell used separately as bed materials. The carbon tended to deposit on the Ni surfaces with the NiO or YSZ powders, while with the anode chips, the deposited carbon formed particles comparable in size to the Ni or YSZ particles with little carbon deposited near the electrolyte where the electrochemical reactions occur. Thus, the results infer that the deposited carbon has little opportunity to participate in the electrochemical reactions. A two-dimensional isothermal model was then developed to examine the influence of the deposited carbon on the cell performance. The results show the diffusion coefficient of CO has the largest influence, followed by the gasifying reactivity and the electrochemical reactivity of the carbon. Finally, a short deposition time and a high methane concentration are favored to improve the performance of deposited carbon fuel cells.
Property-reactivity relations of N-doped PEM fuel cell cathode catalyst supports

Abstract:This study clarifies the effect of the nature of solid N-precursor molecules on the N-modification, more specifically unravels how solid N-precursors – here cyanamide and melamine - affect the physicochemical and catalytic properties of the resulting carbonsupports and final catalysts. Using such modified high surface area carbons, in situ measurements as humidity dependent performance, electrochemical surface area, proton resistivity and limiting current measurements were conducted to access the role and degree of ionomer coverage and transport resistances. Additional X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) proves molecular interaction between acidic side chains and basic N-groups. Overall, we show the importance of the N-precursor and synthetic route determining which physicochemical parameter will be influenced in the resulting catalytic layer. Based on this, the pure presence of some N-moieties does not guarantee an improved ionomer distribution, but the modification process enables a tailoring effect of the carbon species itself affecting transport phenomena.

Abstract:Abstract Graphite, a robust host for reversible lithium storage, enabled the first commercially viable lithium-ion batteries. However, the thermal degradation pathway and the safety hazards of lithiated graphite remain elusive. Here, solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) decomposition, lithium leaching, and gas release of the lithiated graphite anode during heating were examined by in situ synchrotron X-ray techniques and in situ mass spectroscopy. The source of flammable gas such as H 2 was identified and quantitively analyzed. Also, the existence of highly reactive residual lithium on the graphite surface was identified at high temperatures. Our results emphasized the critical role of the SEI in anode thermal stability and uncovered the potential safety hazards of the flammable gases and leached lithium. The anode thermal degradation mechanism revealed in the present work will stimulate more efforts in the rational design of anodes to enable safe energy storage.

Abstract:Baking is the most costly and critical process in anode preparation, and the study from the microscopic scale is conducive to the optimisation of anode baking process. In this research, a hybrid simulation method of reactive force field molecular dynamics (ReaxFF-MD) and force-biased Monte Carlo (fbMC) was proposed to understand the interaction mechanism between coal tar pitch (CTP) and calcined petroleum coke (CPC) during kneading and baking processes, and to explore the optimal ratio of CTP from the molecular scale. Results showed that the CTP content of 14 wt.% was beneficial for anode production. The mechanism of anode coking behaviour at high temperatures was also analyzed. The carbonisation of CTP during high-temperature baking broke the carbon rings and formed straight chains, exposing active carbon atoms that can bond with the remaining layers. As the high-temperature simulation progresses, the carbon chains at the bonding sites became increasingly cyclized and aromatised, which made the layered structure of the baked block similar to that of graphite. The generation of various volatile hydrocarbons during the baking process was observed, namely CH 4 , C 2 H 4 , C 2 H 2 , C 2 H 6 , and C 3 H 6 . This work provides theoretical basis for process optimisation.

Abstract:This study examines how the several major industries, associated with a carbon artifact production, essentially belong to one, closely knit family. The common parents are the geological fossils called petroleum and coal. The study also reviews the major developments in carbon nanotechnology and electrocatalysis over the last 30 years or so. In this context, the development of various carbon materials with size, dopants, shape, and structure designed to achieve high catalytic electroactivity is reported, and among them recent carbon electrodes with many important features are presented together with their relevant applications in chemical technology, neurochemical monitoring, electrode kinetics, direct carbon fuel cells, lithium ion batteries, electrochemical capacitors, and supercapattery.

Abstract:Commercial graphite anodes face the problems of high preparation temperature and limited specific capacity in lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). Amorphous carbon anode materials are prepared at low temperatures and have abundant sources of preparation. As a low‐cost carbon source material, anthracite has a practical application value in storing lithium as anode electrodes of LIBs. However, the capacity is not enough to meet the present increasing demand. We added CNTs to enhance the performance of anthracite‐based carbon anodes. The addition of CNTs significantly improves the electrical properties of amorphous carbon anode materials due to the good electronic conductivity. This anthracite‐based carbon with CNTs (A‐C) anode displays a specific cycling capacity of 360 mAh·g‐1 at the current density of 200 mA·g‐1 after 200 cycles in LIBs. We believe that the work has far‐reaching significance for improving the practicability of amorphous carbon anode materials.

Reactivity Control of Oxidative CL-20@PVDF Composite Microspheres by Using Carbon Nanomaterials as Catalysts

Abstract:2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20) is one of the high-energy oxidants, but has limited application due to its high sensitivity. In this work, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was used as a co-oxidizer, which is expected to increase the safety of CL-20. One kind of novel graphene-based carbohydrazide complex (GCCo and GCNi) was employed to modify the properties of dual-oxidant CL-20@PVDF composites by the spray drying method and compared with traditional nanocarbon materials (CNTs and GO). The properties of these composites were investigated using the TGA/DSC technique and impact test. The results show that GCCo and GCNi could increase the activation energy (Ea) of CL-20@PVDF composites, and change the physical model of CL-20@PVDF, which followed the random chain scission model and then the first-order reaction model. In addition, these nanocarbon materials could reduce the impact sensitivity of CL-20@PVDF by their unique structure. Besides that, a dual-oxidant CL-20@PVDF system was used to improve the combustion property of Boron. GCCo and GCNi with the synergetic effect could increase the flame temperature and control the burn rate of CL-20@PVDF@B compared with CNTs and GO. The energetic nanocarbon catalyst-modified oxidant provides a facile method for stabilizing high-energy but sensitive materials to broaden their application.
Carbon Nanofibers as Potential Catalyst Support for Fuel Cell Cathodes: A Review

Abstract:Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are a fast growing next-generation energy conversion technology, which hold promising interest for transportation and other applications. Nevertheless, successful commercialization of PEMFCs has been significantly retarded principally due to the high cost and poor durability of Pt/C catalysts used for anodic and cathodic reactions. Under typical fuel cell operating conditions, a traditional Pt/C catalyst is prone to degrade by various mechanisms, such as electrochemical carbon corrosion, which results in detrimental effects on the long-term performance. There have been tremendous efforts undertaken to develop durable carbon supports by introducing graphitic carbon components. In this context, carbon nanofiber supported catalysts have been investigated as highly durable supports for Pt and non-Pt nanoparticles in recent years. We anticipate it is timely to review the developments in this topic. This Review highlights the current progress on the graphitic nanofibers as a catalyst support in terms of morphology, electrocatalytic activity, various functionalization strategies, and so on, specifically focusing on the effect of nanofiber edge carbons and the advantages of surface reconstruction of nanofiber edge carbon into loops with regard to the stability of carbon support and fuel cell performance. We believe this Review stands as a guide for future researchers to figure out a rational design of oxygen reduction reaction catalysts, especially dealing with highly graphitized carbons.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Due to a rise in industrial pollutants in modern life, the climate and energy crisis have grown more widespread. One of the best ways to deal with dye degradation, hydrogen production, and carbon dioxide reduction issues is the photocatalytic technique. Among various methods, catalytic technology has demonstrated tremendous promise in recent years as a cheap, sustainable, and environmentally benign technology. The expeditious establishment of carbon-based metal nanoparticles as catalysts in the disciplines of materials and chemical engineering for catalytic applications triggered by visible light is largely attributed to their advancement. There have been many wonderful catalysts created, but there are still many obstacles to overcome, which include the cost of catalysts being reduced and their effectiveness being increased. Carbon-based materials exhibit a unique combination of characteristics that make them ideal catalysts for various reaction types. These characteristics include an exceptional electrical conductivity, well-defined structures at the nanoscale, inherent water repellency, and the ability to tailor surface properties for specific applications. This versatility allows them to be effective in diverse catalytic processes, encompassing organic transformations and photocatalysis. The emergence of carbon-based nanostructured materials, including fullerenes, carbon dots, carbon nanotubes, graphitic carbon nitride, and graphene, presents a promising alternative to conventional catalysts. This review focuses on the diverse functionalities of these materials within the realm of catalysis materials for degradation, hydrogen production, and carbon dioxide reduction. Additionally, it explores the potential for their commercialization, delving into the underlying mechanisms and key factors that influence their performance. It is anticipated that this review will spur more research to develop high-performance carbon-based materials for environmental applications.

Abstract:The carbon nanoparticles obtained from either arcing of graphite under water or thermal annealing of nanodiamonds are commonly called carbon nano onions (CNOs), or spherical graphite, as they are made of concentric fullerene cages separated by the same distance as the shells of graphite. A more careful analysis reveals some dramatic differences between the particles obtained by these two synthetic methods. Physicochemical methods indicate that the CNOs obtained from nanodiamonds (N-CNOs) are smaller and contain more defects than the CNOs obtained from arcing (A-CNOs). These properties explain the enhanced reactivity of the N-CNOs in cycloaddition and oxidation reactions, as well as in reactions involving radicals. Given the easier functionalization of the N-CNOs, they are the most obvious choice for studying the potential applications of these multi-shelled fullerenes.
