Abstract:We describe a simple mechanism to transform bunches with matched longitudinal phase-space distributions from one RF system to a matched distribution of a second RF system operating on a different harmonic and with a different accelerating voltage. The process is reversible and the longitudinal emittance is preserved. Simple equations that characterize the procedure are given and applications are discussed. In particular this method can be used to rapidly shorten the bunch length in proton rings.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to address the problem of maintaining the longitudinal phase space distribution match of particle beams when transferring between different radio frequency (RF) systems, especially under varying harmonic numbers and accelerating voltages. Specifically, the authors propose a simple mechanism to transfer a particle beam with a matched longitudinal phase space distribution from one RF system to another with different harmonic numbers and accelerating voltages, while keeping the longitudinal emittance unchanged. This method can be used to quickly shorten the bunch length in proton rings to meet experimental requirements. ### Main Contributions of the Paper 1. **Theoretical Derivation**: The authors derived the equations describing this transfer process through linearized theory and provided the corresponding transfer matrix. 2. **Simulation Verification**: The effectiveness of the linearized theory was verified through numerical simulations, showing that the change in bunch length during the transfer between different harmonic numbers and voltages is consistent with theoretical predictions. 3. **Application Discussion**: The potential of this method in practical applications was discussed, particularly in proton accelerators and muon colliders. ### Key Points - **Longitudinal Phase Space Matching**: Ensuring that the longitudinal phase space distribution of the particle beam remains matched when transferring between different RF systems. - **Longitudinal Emittance Preservation**: Maintaining the longitudinal emittance unchanged throughout the entire transfer process. - **Bunch Length Control**: Effectively controlling the bunch length by adjusting the RF voltage and timing to achieve rapid shortening. ### Simulation Results - **Voltage Stepping**: The simulation verified that the change in bunch length is consistent with theoretical predictions by increasing the voltage fivefold. - **Harmonic Sequence Conversion**: The process of conversion between different harmonic numbers was demonstrated, from the first harmonic to the third harmonic, then to the eleventh harmonic, and back. - **Harmonic Doubling Cascade**: By gradually doubling the harmonic number, a significant shortening of the bunch length was demonstrated, ultimately achieving a very short bunch length. ### Conclusion - **Consistency Between Theory and Simulation**: The linearized theory is highly consistent with the simulation results of the nonlinear system. - **Limitations of Applicability**: If the bunch distribution is in the nonlinear region, the reversibility of the transfer and the preservation of longitudinal emittance will be affected. - **Technical Challenges**: Implementing these transfers requires advanced low-level RF control systems, and the issues brought by rapidly changing RF parameters and beam loading need further research. Overall, this paper proposes an effective method to maintain the longitudinal phase space distribution match of particle beams when transferring between different RF systems, which is of significant importance for high-energy physics experiments.
