Abstract:We continue the study of freezing sets for digital images introduced in [4, 2, 3]. We prove methods for obtaining freezing sets for digital images (X, c_i) for X \subset Z^2 and i \in {1, 2}. We give examples to show how these methods can lead to the determination of minimal freezing sets.

Abstract:We develop new tools for the construction of fixed point sets in digital topology. We define excludable points and show that these may be excluded from all freezing sets. We show that articulation points are excludable. We also present results concerning points that must belong to a freezing set and often are easily recognized. These include points of degree~1 and some local extrema.

Abstract:Interferometric out-of-focus images of freezing droplets are presented, and compared to simultaneous in-focus images. In these experiments, the freezing process is characterized by a breaking of the initial droplet's glare points into a wide number of neighbor bright spots. The 2D-Fourier transforms of the interferometric patterns show an elliptical contour, with a central spot and eventually symmetric spread spots more or less intense, located around the position of the initial glare points of the liquid droplet (depending on the degree of freezing).

Abstract:We apply freezing operators to relate different (quantum) upper cluster algebras. We prove that these operators send localized (quantum) cluster monomials to localized (quantum) cluster monomials. They also send bases to bases in many cases. In addition, the bases constructed via freezing coincide with those constructed via localization.

Abstract:The infinite-bin model is a one-dimensional particle system on $\mathbb{Z}$ introduced by Foss and Konstantopoulos in relation with last passage percolation on complete directed acyclic graphs. In this model, at each integer time, a particle is selected at random according to its rank, and produces a child at the location immediately to its right. In this article, we consider the limiting distribution of particles after an infinite number of branching events have occurred. Under mild assumptions, we prove that the event (called freezing) that a location contains only a finite number of balls satisfies a $0-1$ law and we provide various criteria to determine whether freezing occurs.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss freezing of quantum imaginarity based on -norm. Several properties about a quantity of imaginarity based on -norm are revealed. For a qubit (2-dimensional) system, we characterize the structure of real quantum operations that allow for freezing the quantity of imaginarity of any state. Furthermore, we characterize the structure of local real operations which can freeze the quantity of imaginarity of a class of -qubit quantum states.

Abstract:This tutorial is about cellular automata that exhibit 'cold dynamics'. By this we mean zero entropy, stabilization of all orbits, trivial asymptotic dynamics, etc. These are purely transient irreversible dynamics, but they capture many examples from the literature. A rich zoo of properties is presented and discussed: nilpotency and asymptotic, generic or mu-variants, unique ergodicity, convergence, bounded-changeness, freezingness. They all correspond to the 'cold dynamics' paradigm in some way, and we study their links and differences by various examples and results from the literature. Besides dynamical considerations, we also focus on computational aspects: we show how such 'cold cellular automata' can still compute under their dynamical constraint, and what are their computational limitation.

Abstract:The properties of a macroscopic assembly of weakly-repulsive bosons at zero temperature are well described by Gross-Pitaevskii mean-field theory. According to this formalism the system exhibits a quantum transition from superfluid to cluster supersolid as a function of pressure. We develop a thermodynamically rigorous treatment of the different phases of the system by adopting a variational formulation of the condensate wave function --- represented as a sum of Gaussians --- that is amenable to exact manipulations. Not only is this description quantitatively accurate, but it is also capable to predict the order (and sometimes even the location) of the transition. We consider a number of crystal structures in two and three dimensions and determine the phase diagram. Depending on the lattice, the transition from fluid to solid can be first-order or continuous, a lower coordination entailing a milder transition. In two dimensions, crystallization would occur at the same pressure on three distinct lattices (square, honeycomb, and stripes), all providing metastable phases with respect to the triangular crystal. A similar scenario holds in three dimensions, where the simple-cubic and diamond crystals also share a common melting point; however, the stable crystal at low pressure is typically fcc. Upon compression and depending on the shape of the potential, the fcc crystal may transform into hcp. We conclude by sketching a theory of the solid-fluid interface and of quantum nucleation of the solid from the fluid.

Abstract:The freezing transition in a classical three-dimensional system of parallel hard cubes with rounded edges is studied by computer simulation and fundamental-measure density functional theory. By switching the rounding parameter s from zero to one, one can smoothly interpolate between cubes with sharp edges and hard spheres. The equilibrium phase diagram of rounded parallel hard cubes is computed as a function of their volume fraction and the rounding parameter s. The second order freezing transition known for oriented cubes at s = 0 is found to be persistent up to s = 0.65. The fluid freezes into a simple-cubic crystal which exhibits a large vacancy concentration. Upon a further increase of s, the continuous freezing is replaced by a first-order transition into either a sheared simple cubic lattice or a deformed face-centered cubic lattice with two possible unit cells: body-centered orthorhombic or base-centered monoclinic. In principle, a system of parallel cubes could be realized in experiments on colloids using advanced synthesis techniques and a combination of external fields.

On the Equivalence of Equilibrium and Freezing States in Dynamical Systems

Abstract:This paper is concerned with freezing phase transitions in general dynamical systems. A freezing phase transition is one in which, for a given potential $\phi$, there exists some inverse temperature $\beta_0 > 0$ such that for all $\alpha, \beta > \beta_0$, the collection of equilibrium states for $\alpha \phi$ and $\beta \phi$ coincide. In this sense, below the temperature $1 / \beta_0$, the system "freezes" on a fixed collection of equilibrium states. We show that for a given invariant measure $\mu$, it is no more restrictive that $\mu$ is the freezing state for some potential than it is for $\mu$ to be the equilibrium state for some potential. In fact, our main result applies to any collection of equilibrium states with the same entropy. In the case where the entropy map $h$ is upper semi-continuous, we show any ergodic measure $\mu$ can be obtained as a freezing state for some potential. In this upper semi-continuous setting, we additionally show that the collection of potentials that freeze at a single state is dense in the space of all potentials.

Abstract:While routinely used in other areas of dynamics, image sets are ill-defined objects in general non-invertible measurable dynamics. We propose a way of consistently working with image sets of null-preserving (and hence, in particular, of measure-preserving) maps. This concept is illustrated in the context of basic ergodic properties like recurrence, ergodicity, exactness and existence of generators. It allows us to turn various suasive but logically false statements about set-theoretic images into actual theorems, and to eliminate extra assumptions on the measurability of images from some classical results.
