Abstract:We continue the study of freezing sets in digital topology, introduced in [2]. We show how to find a minimal freezing set for a "thick" convex disk X in the digital plane Z^2. We give examples showing the significance of the assumption that X is convex.

We prove methods for obtaining freezing sets for digital images (X, c_i) for X \subset Z^2 and i \in {1, 2}. We give examples to show how these methods can lead to the determination of minimal freezing sets.

Abstract:We develop new tools for the construction of fixed point sets in digital topology. We define excludable points and show that these may be excluded from all freezing sets. We show that articulation points are excludable. We also present results concerning points that must belong to a freezing set and often are easily recognized. These include points of degree~1 and some local extrema.

Abstract:Cone and suspension constructions have been introduced in digital topology, modeled on those of classical topology. For digital cones and suspensions, and for some related digital images, we find (m, n)-limiting sets; especially (0, 0)-limiting (freezing) sets.

Abstract:We continue the work of [10], studying properties of digital images determined by fixed point invariants. We introduce pointed versions of invariants that were introduced in [10]. We introduce freezing sets and cold sets to show how the existence of a fixed point set for a continuous self-map restricts the map on the complement of the fixed point set.

Abstract:In this article we discuss classical theorems from Convex Geometry in the context of topological drawings and beyond. In a simple topological drawing of the complete graph $K_n$, any two edges share at most one point: either a common vertex or a point where they cross. Triangles of simple topological drawings can be viewed as convex sets. This gives a link to convex geometry. As our main result, we present a generalization of Kirchberger's Theorem that is of purely combinatorial nature. It turned out that this classical theorem also applies to "generalized signotopes" - a combinatorial generalization of simple topological drawings, which we introduce and investigate in the course of this article. As indicated by the name they are a generalization of signotopes, a structure studied in the context of encodings for arrangements of pseudolines. We also present a family of simple topological drawings with arbitrarily large Helly number, and a new proof of a topological generalization of Carathéodory's Theorem in the plane and discuss further classical theorems from Convex Geometry in the context of simple topological drawings.

Abstract:Digital topological methods are often used on computing the topological complexity of digital images. We give new results on the relation between reducibility and digital contractibility in order to determine the topological complexity of a digitally connected finite digital image. We present all possible cases of the topological complexity TC of a finite digital image in Z and Z^2$. Finally, we determine the higher topological complexity TC_{n} of finite irreducible digital images independently of the number of points for n > 1.

Abstract:This research is motivated by studying image processing algorithms through a topological lens. The images we focus on here are those that have been segmented by digital Jordan curves as a means of image compression. The algorithms of interest are those that continuously morph one digital image into another digital image. Digital Jordan curves have been studied in a variety of forms for decades now. Our contribution to this field is interpreting the set of digital Jordan curves that can exist within a given digital plane as a finite topological space. Computing the topological complexity of this space determines the minimal number of continuous motion planning rules required to transform one image into another, and determining the motion planners associated to topological complexity provides the specific algorithms for doing so. The main result of Section 3 is that our space of digital Jordan curves is connected, hence, its topological complexity is finite. To build up to that, we use Section 2 to prove some results about paths and distance functions that are obvious in Hausdorff spaces, yet surprisingly elusive in $T_0$ spaces. We end with Section 4, in which we study applications of these results. In particular, we prove that our interpretation of the space of digital Jordan curves is the only topologically correct interpretation. This article is an adaptation of the author's Ph.D. dissertation.

Abstract:We study some interesting properties of Furstenberg's topology of the integers. We show that it is metrizable, totally disconnected, and (Z,+,.) is a topological ring with respect to this topology. As an application, we show that any two disjoint sets of primes can be separated by arithmetic progressions.
