Abstract:MFI zeolite nanosheets with a single-unit-cell crystal thickness were syn-thesized under hydrothermal synthesis conditions using diquaternary ammonium surfactants as the zeolite structure-generating agent. The zeolite structure generation process was analyzed from X-ray powder diffraction, N2 adsorption isotherms, scanning electron micrographs, and transmission electron micrographs of the porous materials generated at various reaction times. This analysis indicated that the nanosheets were initially generated as a disordered assembly that transformed into an ordered multilamellar mesostructure through a dissolution−recrystallization process upon prolonged hydrothermal aging. Synthesis factors affecting the rates of the initial generation of the nanosheets and their restructuring process were investigated while varying the temperature, structure of the surfactant tail, synthesis compositions, and basicity. On the basis of the result, it was possible to synthesize MFI zeolite nanosheets as a fully disordered assembly possessing a large mesopore volume even under synthesis conditions using the bromide form of the surfactant and a sodium-containing silica source such as water glass.

Abstract:Preparation of aluminosilicate ferrierite (FER) zeolite nanosheets with controllable thickness in the presence of a sole organic ammonium is attractive, but still challenging. In this report, with the employment of N,N-diethyl-cis-2,6-dimethylpiperidinium (DMP) as both a structure directing agent and crystal growth inhibitor, aluminosilicate FER zeolite nanosheets, with a variety of crystal thicknesses, ranging from 6 to 200 nm, are successfully synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Very interestingly, the amount of DMP in the starting gel is the key factor for crystal thickness control of aluminosilicate FER zeolite nanosheets. The obtained FER products, with different thicknesses, are well characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N-2 sorption, thermogravimetric analysis (TG), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), and magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) techniques. This simple strategy might provide a novel avenue for the synthesis of other zeolite nanosheets with controllable thickness.
Exfoliating layered zeolite MFI into unilamellar nanosheets in solution as precursors for the synthesis of hierarchical nanocomposites and oriented films

Abstract:Zeolites have many uses and are continually developed for catalysis and separations as highly active, selective and thermally stable materials with microporous framework structures of various topologies. Among approximately 250 known frameworks about 20, but possibly all eventually, produced 2D forms with layers of thickness up to a few nanometers. Recently, layered forms of the zeolite MWW and a ferrierite-related one have been exfoliated directly by a soft-chemical treatment into solutions of unilamellar nanosheets. They enable the synthesis of layer-based hierarchical and nanocomposite materials with diverse compositions that are unfeasible with solid 3D and 2D forms. The efficiency and yield of zeolite exfoliation can be inhibited by intergrowth so each topology presents a separate challenge. The MFI zeolite can provide particular benefits as one of the most active and versatile frameworks. It has permeable layers due to perpendicular channels and has been used as a membrane. This article describes exfoliation of the layered MFI produced by the bifunctional template developed by Ryoo et al. It affords unilamellar MFI nanosheets in solution with a uniform hydrated thickness of 3.6 nm confirmed by AFM, X-ray diffraction and TEM. The nanosheets can be reassembled top-down into self-standing b -oriented discs or films, proven by X-ray powder diffraction. They preserve high acid site concentration and porosity. The basal spacing contracts from 3.6 nm to 2.8 nm upon calcination. Oriented MFI films were also formed by the evaporation/calcination of nanosheet solutions and surfactant composites enabling simple fabrication on various substrates for application in catalysis and separations.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous structures have been fabricated using colloidal zeolite silicalite nanocrystals as building blocks. Continuous, uniform, optically transparent and self-standing silicalite membranes with well-defined shapes and controlled mesoporosity were obtained by self-assembly of zeolite nanocrystals followed by high-pressure compression and controlled secondary crystal growth via microwave treatment. The thickness of the compact self-standing membranes is tunable from 20 μm to several millimeters by simply using different surface weight densities. Controlled secondary growth via microwave treatment leads to a stronger self-standing membrane with controlled mesoporosity and has little effect on its thickness, crystallinity, micropore surface area and micropore volume.
Rapid detection of Mycoplasma pneumoniae in clinical samples by the polymerase chain reaction.

Abstract:A DNA amplification method was used to detect Mycoplasma pneumoniae in clinical samples. M. pneumoniae 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequences were selected as the amplification target region. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with purified DNA fragments as templates yielded an expected 88-bp fragment from M. pneumoniae but not from other Mycoplasma spp. nor from any of the other bacteria assayed. With this method, the 88-bp product specific for M. pneumoniae could be obtained from a minimum of 0.05 pg of M. pneumoniae DNA. Subsequently this PCR technique was used for the detection of M. pneumoniae in throat-swab samples. Twenty-two of 30 culture-positive clinical samples gave positive results in the PCR test. Thirty-two culture-negative clinical samples and 33 samples from healthy volunteers, of which only one was culture-positive, gave negative results in the same PCR test. This PCR method is useful for the direct detection of M. pneumoniae in clinical samples.

Abstract:Zeolite crystals offering a short diffusion pathway through the pore network are highly desired for a number of catalytic and molecule separation applications. Herein, we develop a simple synthetic strategy toward reducing the thickness along the b-axis of MFI-type crystals, thus providing a short diffusion path along the straight channel. Our approach combines preliminary aging and a fluoride-assisted low-temperature crystallization. The synthesized MFI crystals are in the micrometer-size range along the a- and c-axis, while the thickness along the b-axis is a few tens of nanometers. The synthesis parameters controlling the formation of platelike zeolite are studied, and the factors controlling the zeolite growth are identified. The synthesis strategy works equally well with all-silica MFI (silicalite-1) and its Al- and Ga-containing derivatives. The catalytic activity of platelike ZSM-5 in the methanol-to-hydrocarbons (MTH) reaction is compared with a commercial nanosized ZSM-5 sample, as the platelike ZSM-5 exhibits a substantially extended lifetime. Abstract:Mesoporous MFI zeolite is fabricated through impregnating a structure-directing agent into as-synthesized MCM-41 followed by dry-gel conversion to transform amorphous silica to zeolite crystal. The original surfactant in the as-synthesized MCM-41 is used as the necessary mesoporogen to direct the mesopore genesis of zeolites, using the process of streaming to spur the transformation and tailoring the texture of mesoporous ZSM-5 by adjusting the Si : Al ratio in the MCM-41 source. The resulting sample is characterized by X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, TEM and N-2 adsorption to evaluate the textural properties of the mesoporous zeolite. Two kinds of nitrosamines with different structures are used as probe molecules to survey the adsorption function of the resulting mesoporous zeolite. Mesoporous zeolites exhibit good adsorption capacities and exceed either microporous zeolite or mesoporous silica. This synthesis strategy omits the fabrication and removal of the carbon template and simplifies the synthesis process of mesoporous zeolites, saving energy and time.

Abstract:Mesoporous zeolites have been paid much attention recently due to their excellent mass transfer and high activity for bulky molecules as well as unique shape selectivity, but their syntheses usually require the presence of organic templates. Here, we report organotemplate-free synthesis of mesoporous and Al-rich MFI zeolite in the presence of the zeolite seeds (MFI-SDS). The MFI-SDS crystals are assembled with rod-like nanocrystals having almost the same aligned direction, confirmed by the sample transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The space between nanocrystals forms the mesoporosity in the sample, supported by N2 sorption isotherms. 27Al MAS NMR spectroscopy and ICP analysis show that the MFI-SDS has abundant tetrahedral Al species in the zeolite framework, giving the Si/Al ratio at 9.5. Catalytic tests in cumene cracking show that the MFI-SDS exhibits higher catalytic activities and longer catalyst life than conventional ZSM-5 zeolites synthesized in the absence (ZSM-5-OTF) or presence of organic template, TPA+ (ZSM-5-TPA). The excellent catalytic performance should be assigned to the combined contribution of the presence of both mesoporosity and rich tetrahedral Al species in the MFI-SDS. These features would be critically important for industrial applications of MFI zeolite catalysts in the future.
Rapid and Facile Synthesis of Nanosized Silicalite-1 Zeolites from Solid Silica in a Semisolid-like System Via a Two-Step Crystallization Method

Abstract:Nanosized zeolites have been found in extensive applications. Herein, a rapid two-step crystallization process (8 h) in a semisolid-like gel system, constructed by simply mixing and grinding solid silica gel, NaOH with TPAOH aqueous solution without extra water addition and any other additives, for the first time is demonstrated to synthesize nanosized silicalite-1 zeolites (similar to 66 nm) with high crystallinity and high product yield (>90%). The obtained nanosized silicalite-1 zeolites exhibit a large BET surface area (418 m(2) g(-1)), a high micropore surface area (316 m(2) g(-1)), and a rich micropore volume (0.14 cm(3) g(-1)). The rapid evolution process of nanosized zeolites could be decoupled into the nucleation stage at low temperatures and the crystallization stage at high temperatures during the two-step crystallization process. Importantly, the semisolid-like gel ensures fast nucleation. Moreover, in the later crystallization period, the fast crystal growth and inhibited ripening endow nanosized zeolite crystals with good crystallinity through a mass transfer-confined space. The obtained silicalite-1 zeolites were successfully applied in the preparation of (h0h)-oriented MFI zeolite membranes on hollow fibers, showing the flux up to 5.44 kg m(-2) h(-1) and the separation factor of 70 during the pervaporation test (5 wt % ethanol/water solution, 60 degrees C). This research develops a state-of-the-art synthetic approach for the efficient preparation of high-quality MFI-type nanozeolites.

Abstract:Zeolite nanosheets can be used for the fabrication of low-defect-density, thin, and oriented zeolite separation membranes. However, methods for manipulating their morphology are limited, hindering progress toward improved performance. We report the direct synthesis (i.e., without using exfoliation, etching, or other top-down processing) of thin, flat MFI nanosheets and demonstrate their use as high-performance membranes for xylene isomer separations. Our MFI nanosheets were synthesized using nanosheet fragments as seeds instead of the previously used MFI nanoparticles. The obtained MFI nanosheets exhibit improved thickness uniformity and are free of rotational and MEL intergrowths as shown by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging. The nanosheets can form well-packed nanosheet coatings. Upon gel-free secondary growth, the obtained zeolite MFI membranes show high separation performance for xylene isomers at elevated temperature (e.g., p -xylene flux up to 1.5 × 10 −3 mol m −2 s −1 and p -/ o -xylene separation factor of ~600 at 250°C).

Abstract:Feasible strategies are desirable for preparing zeolitic nanosheets with opener porosities and more accessible active sites. Highly delaminated FER nanosheets (ECNU-17) with unit-cell scale thickness were hydrothermally synthesized using a simple, small, and low-cost imidazole molecule as the sole organic structure-directing agent (OSDA). The single OSDA directed the formation of the FER framework, while the π–π stacked OSDAs terminated the growth perpendicular to the zeolite sheets. The ECNU-17 nanosheet is only 2.9 nm in thickness, corresponding to one and a half FER unit cells along a-axis. With open hierarchical porosity and an enhanced external surface area of 253 m2 g–1, ECNU-17 is endowed with improved mass transport and a significantly increased number of active acid sites accessible to bulky organic molecules. Abstract:D.-g. Cheng, J. L. Gong, and co-workers describe a simple and general one-step method to combine crystalline zeolite micropores in an ordered mesopore network via cooperative assembly. On page 4249, they use Na+ and OH- as promoters, which enhance the cooperative assembly of an ordinary organic cation surfactant and a zeolite structure-directing agent with aluminosilicate precursors. Their hydrothermal synthesis produces a periodic mesoporous aluminosilicate molecular sieve with mesopore walls composed of a crystalline zeolite framework.

Abstract:Two types of 2D zeolite nanosheets are assembled layer‐by‐layer through sequential adsorption procedure with polycation as a linker. Unit‐cell‐level design into multilayer and superlattice structures is demonstrated to provide a new route to artificial zeolites. It is found that the adsorption performance of a typical dye can be controlled by the film architecture. Zeolites have been widely applied as versatile catalysts, sorbents, and ion exchangers with unique porous structures showing molecular sieving capability. In these years, it is reported that some layered zeolites can be delaminated into molecularly thin 2‐dimensional (2D) nanosheets characterized by inherent porous structures and highly exposed active sites. In the present study, two types of zeolite nanosheets with distinct porous structures with MWW topology (denoted mww) and ferrierite‐related structure (denoted bifer) are deposited on a substrate through the solution process via electrostatic self‐assembly. Alternate deposition of zeolite nanosheets with polycation under optimized conditions allows the layer‐by‐layer growth of their multilayer films with a stacking distance of 2–3 nm. Furthermore, various hierarchical structures defined at the unit‐cell dimensions can be constructed simply by conducting the deposition of mww and bifer nanosheets in a designed sequence. Adsorption of a dye, Rhodamine B, in these films, is examined to show that adsorption is dependent on constituent zeolite nanosheets and their assembled nanostructures. This work has provided fundamental advancements in the fabrication of artificial zeolite‐related hierarchical structures, which may be extended to other zeolite nanosheets, broadening their functionalities, applications, and benefits.

Abstract:Arousal from sleep is a critical defense mechanism when infants are exposed to hypoxia, and an arousal deficit has been postulated as contributing to the etiology of the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The brainstems of SIDS infants are deficient in serotonin (5-HT) and tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) and have decreased binding to 5-HT receptors. This study explores a possible connection between medullary 5-HT neuronal activity and arousal from sleep in response to hypoxia. Medullary raphe 5-HT neurons were eliminated from neonatal rat pups with intracisterna magna (CM) injections of 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine (DHT) at P2-P3. Each pup was then exposed to four episodes of hypoxia during sleep at three developmental ages (P5, P15, and P25) to produce an arousal response. Arousal, heart rate, and respiratory rate responses of DHT-injected pups were compared with pups that received CM artificial cerebrospinal fluid (aCSF) and those that received DHT but did not have a significant reduction in medullary 5-HT neurons. During each hypoxia exposure, the time to arousal from the onset of hypoxia (latency) was measured together with continuous measurements of heart and respiratory rates, oxyhemoglobin saturation, and chamber oxygen concentration. DHT-injected pups with significant losses of medullary 5-HT neurons exhibited significantly longer arousal latencies and decreased respiratory rate responses to hypoxia compared with controls. These results support the hypothesis that in newborn and young rat pups, 5-HT neurons located in the medullary raphe contribute to the arousal response to hypoxia. Thus alterations medullary 5-HT mechanisms might contribute to an arousal deficit and contribute to death in SIDS infants.
Fabrication of B‐oriented MFI Zeolite Films under Neutral Conditions Without the Use of Hydrogen Fluoride

Abstract:The fabrication of MFI zeolite films with particular b-axis orientation is especially fascinating. Unlike the conventional alkaline or hydrofluoric acid (HF) assisted neutral synthesis route, here we develop a novel neutral synthesis solution system of TPABr/fumed silica/H2O without the use of HF and successfully synthesize highly b-oriented MFI zeolite films on glass-plate substrates by secondary growth. The localized weak alkaline environment created by the dissolved Na2O species from the substrate is identified as the key factor for the depolymerization of fumed silica and subsequently the in-plane growth of zeolite seed layers. Continuous b-oriented MFI films can also be synthesized on other substrates in the presence of a glass plate or a trace amount of NaOH, which making our neutral synthesis route promising for the direct synthesis of MFI zeolite films and membranes on various substrates.

Abstract:Up to date, zeolite films have been mainly fabricated by in situ crystallization, secondary growth in a solution/hydrogel, or occasionally by vapor phase transformation of dry gel. Here we demonstrate for the first time a solvent-free secondary growth method for b-oriented silica MFI zeolite films using the synthetic powder from ground anhydrous raw solids in the presence of NH4F. Typically, precisely b-oriented MFI zeolite films are synthesized from seed layers of highly b-oriented MFI zeolite crystals in the synthetic powder of 1SiO2:0.035TPABr:0.05NH4F at 175 °C for 6 h. If needed, b-oriented MFI zeolite multilayer films can be acquired by changing the synthesis time or the amount of NH4F in the synthetic powder. Compared with the traditional hydrothermal synthesis, the approach developed here may provide a new avenue for fabricating high quality zeolite films/membranes.

Abstract:Successive mesophase transformation induced by an anionic surfactant such as sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate (AOT) has been demonstrated to fabricate four kinds of large pore mesoporous silica materials in a triblock copolymer F127 surfactant assembly system. The transformation of the highly ordered mesostructures from face-centered cubic (space group Fm (3) over barm) to body-centered Im (3) over barm then towards two-dimensional (2-D) hexagonal p6m and eventually to cubic bicontinuous Ia (3) over bard symmetries has been achieved by tuning the amount of AOT and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (TMB). Characterization by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and N-2 sorption isotherms reveals that all mesoporous silica structures have highly ordered regularity in large domains and possess high surface areas, large pore volumes and uniform pore sizes. The expansion of hydrophobic volume in the amphiphilic Pluronic F127 surfactant associated with AOT and TMB molecules in an acidic media is attributed to the observed mesophase transformation. A further swelling of the surfactant micelles can be achieved by adding TMB molecules into the mixed AOT and F127 surfactants system due to their synergistic solubility enhancement, which gives rise to a long-range ordered 2-D hexagonal mesoporous silica structure with very large cell parameter (a = 16.5 nm) and pore size (similar to 12 nm). The understanding of the blend-surfactant assembly mechanism will lead to a more rational approach for economical and large-scale production of mesoporous materials with controllable structures.

Abstract:Construction of hierarchical zeolite catalysts from lamellar zeolite precursor is challenging and promising for industrial catalysis. Although numerous efforts have been dedicated to control the organization of zeolite nanosheets by postsynthetic approaches or employing complex surfactants in hydrothermal synthesis, there is still no successful case that the hierarchical lamellar zeolite is hydrothermally synthesized by the self-assembly of the commercially available simple surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and inorganic zeolite precursor. In traditional syntheses, the self assembly of simple surfactants and the growth of microporous framework are hardly compatible from both thermodynamic and kinetic viewpoints, preferring to cause phase separation. Herein, we approach for the first time the hydrothermal synthesis of a mesostructured multilamellar zeolite ECNU-7P, consisting of an alternative stacking of inorganic MWW zeolite nanosheets and organic CTAB layers with large interlayer spacing (25 angstrom), by a zeolite seed and CTAB-assisted dissolution-recrystallization route. Correlated 2D H-1-Si-29 solid-state NMR, X-ray, electron microscopy, and rotation electron diffraction analyses provide molecular-level insights into the guest-host interactions between organic surfactant and inorganic framework during the self-assembly and structure evolution process. Moreover, the calcined Al-ECNU-7 possessing a hierarchical mesostructure proves to serve as a highly active, selective, and stable solid acid catalyst for triisopropylbenzene cracking as well as acylation of anisole.
