Abstract:We define a family of symplectic invariants which obstruct exact symplectic embeddings between Liouville manifolds, using the general formalism of linearized contact homology and its L-infinity structure. As our primary application, we investigate embeddings between normal crossing divisor complements in complex projective space, giving a complete characterization in many cases. Our main embedding results are deduced explicitly from pseudoholomorphic curves, without appealing to Hamiltonian or virtual perturbations.
Symplectic Geometry
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the embedding complexity between Liouville manifolds. Specifically, the authors define a class of symplectic invariants, which can be used to obstruct exact symplectic embeddings between Liouville manifolds. Through these invariants, they study the embeddings between complements of normal crossing divisors in complex projective spaces and give a complete characterization in many cases. ### Main problems of the paper 1. **Embedding problem**: - Given two Liouville domains \((X, \lambda)\) and \((X', \lambda')\) of the same dimension, when does a Liouville embedding \(X \hookrightarrow X'\) exist? - The solution to this problem depends on symplectic homology theory and the analysis of pseudo - holomorphic curves. 2. **Complexity concept**: - Does there exist a natural concept of "complexity" such that more complex Liouville domains cannot be embedded into simpler Liouville domains? - The authors explore this problem by defining a series of symplectic invariants and give specific calculation methods and application examples. ### Specific problem examples - **Embedding of hyperplane complements**: - Consider the complement \(X^{2n}_k\) of \(k\) hyperplanes in general position in the complex projective space \(\mathbb{CP}^n\). When does a Liouville embedding \(X^{2n}_{k'} \hookrightarrow X^{2n}_k\) exist? - The authors solve this problem by calculating a specific symplectic invariant \(G < T^m_p>\) and give some specific conclusions. ### Main results - **Theorem 1.5**: - Fix \(n\in\mathbb{Z}_{\geq1}\) and two tuples of positive integers \(\vec{d}=(d_1,\ldots,d_k)\in\mathbb{Z}_{\geq1}^k\) and \(\vec{d}'=(d'_1,\ldots,d'_{k'})\in\mathbb{Z}_{\geq1}^{k'}\) such that \(\sum_{i = 1}^k d_i,\sum_{i = 1}^{k'} d'_i\geq n + 1\) and \(\sum_{i = 1}^{k'} d'_i<2\sum_{i = 1}^k d_i - n - 1\). Then a Liouville embedding \(X^{2n}_{\vec{d}}\hookrightarrow X^{2n}_{\vec{d}'}\) exists if and only if \(\vec{d}\preceq\vec{d}'\). - **Corollary 1.6**: - For any \(n\in\mathbb{Z}_{\geq1}\) and \(k'>k\geq n + 1\), there is no Liouville embedding \(X^{2n}_{k'}\hookrightarrow X^{2n}_k\). ### Methods and techniques - **Symplectic invariant \(G < T^m_p>\)**: - The authors define a class of symplectic invariants \(G < T^m_p>\), which are positive - valued and monotonically increasing under Liouville embeddings. - By calculating these invariants, the authors are able to prove the impossibility of certain embeddings. - **Pseudo - holomorphic curves**: - The authors use the moduli space of pseudo - holomorphic curves to analyze the embedding problem. This method is very effective especially when dealing with high - dimensional cases. - **Combinatorial obstructions**: - Through detailed combinatorial analysis, the authors obtain more refined embedding obstruction conditions, which are more powerful in many cases than simple symplectic invariants. ### Conclusion This paper successfully solves the problem of embedding complexity between Liouville manifolds by defining and calculating new symplectic invariants and applies it to the specific example of hyperplane complements in complex projective spaces.
