Abstract:Real-analytic Levi-flat codimension two CR singular submanifolds are a natural generalization to ${\mathbb{C}}^m$, $m > 2$, of Bishop surfaces in ${\mathbb{C}}^2$. Such submanifolds for example arise as zero sets of mixed-holomorphic equations with one variable antiholomorphic. We classify the codimension two Levi-flat CR singular quadrics, and we notice that new types of submanifolds arise in dimension 3 or greater. In fact, the nondegenerate submanifolds, i.e. higher order purturbations of $z_m=\bar{z}_1z_2+\bar{z}_1^2$, have no analogue in dimension 2. We prove that the Levi-foliation extends through the singularity in the real-analytic nondegenerate case. Furthermore, we prove that the quadric is a (convergent) normal form for a natural large class of such submanifolds, and we compute its automorphism group. In general, we find a formal normal form in ${\mathbb{C}}^3$ in the nondegenerate case that shows infinitely many formal invariants.

Abstract:For later use in subsequent upcoming <a class="link-internal link-http" href="http://arxiv.org">arxiv.org</a> prepublications, basic foundational material on local, smooth or real analytic, CR-generic submanifolds of complex Euclidean spaces is developed from scratch, with strong emphasis on the interplay between extrinsic and intrinsic aspects, a constructive option that commands to perform computational syntheses in coordinates. Mainly, one finds a self-contained proof of the existence of precisely six general classes: I, II, III-1, III-2, IV-1, IV-2 of nondegenerate general CR manifolds up to dimension 5, class III-2 being unobserved untill now.

Abstract:In this paper we generalize the notion of regular homotopy of immersions of a closed connected n-manifold into R^{2n-1} to locally generic mappings. The main result is that if n=2 then two mappings with singularities are regularly homotopic if and only if they have the same number of cross-cap (or Whitney-umbrella) singularities. As an application, we get a description of the path-components of the space of those immersions of a surface into R^4 whose projections into R^3 are locally generic.

Models of $2$-nondegenerate CR hypersurface in $\mathbb{C}^N$

Abstract:We show that every point in a uniformly $2$-nondegenerate CR hypersurface is canonically associated with a model $2$-nondegenerate structure. The $2$-nondegenerate models are basic CR invariants playing the same fundamental role as quadrics do in the Levi nondegenerate case. We characterize all $2$-nondegenerate models and show that the moduli space of such hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{C}^N$ is infinite dimensional for each $N>3$. We derive a normal form for these models' defining equations that is unique up to an action of a finite dimensional Lie group. We generalize recently introduced CR invariants termed modified symbols, and show how to compute these intrinsically defined invariants from a model's defining equation. We show that these models automatically possess infinitesimal symmetries spanning a complement to their Levi kernel and derive explicit formulas for them.

Abstract:In this note we propose the generalization of the notion of a holomorphic contact structure on a manifold (smooth variety) to varieties with rational singularities and prove basic properties of such objects. Natural examples of singular contact varieties come from the theory of nilpotent orbits: every projectivization of the closure of a nilpotent orbit in a semisimple Lie algebra satisfies our definition after normalization. We show the correspondence between symplectic varieties with the structure of a $\mathbb{C}^*$-bundle and the contact ones along with the existence of the stratification à la Kaledin. In the projective case we demonstrate the equivalence between crepant and contact resolutions of singularities, show the uniruledness and give a full classification of projective contact varieties in dimension 3.

CR singular images of generic submanifolds under holomorphic maps

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to organize some results on the local geometry of CR singular real-analytic manifolds that are images of CR manifolds via a CR map that is a diffeomorphism onto its image. We find a necessary (sufficient in dimension 2) condition for the diffeomorphism to extend to a finite holomorphic map. The multiplicity of this map is a biholomorphic invariant that is precisely the Moser invariant of the image when it is a Bishop surface with vanishing Bishop invariant. In higher dimensions, we study Levi-flat CR singular images and we prove that the set of CR singular points must be large, and in the case of codimension 2, necessarily Levi-flat or complex. We also show that there exist real-analytic CR functions on such images that satisfy the tangential CR conditions at the singular points, yet fail to extend to holomorphic functions in a neighborhood. We provide many examples to illustrate the phenomena that arise.

Abstract:An explicit classification of simply connected compact homogeneous CR manifolds G/L of codimension one, with non-degenerate Levi form, is given. There are three classes of such manifolds: a) the standard CR homogeneous manifolds which are homogeneous S^1-bundles over a flag manifold F, with CR structure induced by an invariant complex structure on F; b) the Morimoto-Nagano spaces, i.e. sphere bundles $S(N)\subset TN$ of a compact rank one symmetric space N = G/H, with the CR structure induced by the natural complex structure of $TN = G^\C/H^\C$; c) the following manifolds: $SU_n/T^1\cdot SU_{n-2}$, $SU_p\times SU_q/T^1 \cdot U_{p-2}\cdot U_{q-2}$, $SU_n/T^1\cdot SU_2\cdot SU_2\cdot SU_{n-4}$, $SO_{10}/T^1\cdot SO_6$, $E_6/T^1\cdot SO_8$; these manifolds admit canonical holomorphic fibrations over a flag manifold (F,J_F) with typical fiber S(S^k), where k = 2, 3, 5, 7 or 9, respectively; the CR structure is determined by the invariant complex structure J_F on F and by an invariant CR structure on the typical fiber, depending on one complex parameter.

The Local Equivalence Problem for 7-Dimensional, 2-Nondegenerate CR Manifolds whose Cubic Form is of Conformal Unitary Type

Abstract:We apply E. Cartan's method of equivalence to classify 7-dimensional, 2-nondegenerate CR manifolds $M$ up to local CR equivalence in the case that the cubic form of $M$ satisfies a certain symmetry property with respect to the Levi form of $M$. The solution to the equivalence problem is given by a parallelism on a principal bundle over $M$. When the nondegenerate part of the Levi form has definite signature, the parallelism takes values in $\mathfrak{su}(2,2)$. When this signature is split and an additional "isotropy-switching" hypothesis is satisfied, the parallelism takes values in $\mathfrak{su}(3,1)$. Differentiating the parallelism provides a complete set of local invariants of $M$. We exhibit an explicit example of a real hypersurface in $\mathbb{C}^4$ whose invariants are nontrivial.

Abstract:We say that a CR singular submanifold $M$ has a removable CR singularity if the CR structure at the CR points of $M$ extends through the singularity as an abstract CR structure on $M$. We study such real-analytic submanifolds, in which case removability is equivalent to $M$ being the image of a generic real-analytic submanifold $N$ under a holomorphic map that is a diffeomorphism of $N$ onto $M$, what we call a CR image. We study the stability of the CR singularity under perturbation, the associated quadratic invariants, and conditions for removability of a CR singularity. A lemma is also proved about perturbing away the zeros of holomorphic functions on CR submanifolds, which could be of independent interest.

Certain smooth real surfaces in $\mathbb{C}^2$ with singularity

Abstract:Under certain geometric condition, the surfaces in $\mathbb{C}^2$ with isolated CR singularity at the origin and with cubic lowest degree homogeneous term in its graph near the origin, can be reduced, up to biholomorphism of $\mathbb{C}^2$, to a one parameter family of the form \[ M_t:=\left\{(z,w)\in\mathbb{C}^2: w=z^2\overline{z}+tz\overline{z}^2+\dfrac{t^2}{3} \overline{z}^3+o(|z|^3)\right\},\;\; t\in (0,\infty) \] near the origin. We prove that $M_t$ is not locally polynomially convex if $t<1$. The local hull contains a ball centred at the origin if $t<\sqrt{3}/2$. We also prove that $M_t$ is locally polynomially convex for $t\geq\dfrac{\sqrt{15-\sqrt{33}}}{2\sqrt{2}}=1.076...$. We show that, for $\sqrt{3}/2\leq t<1$, the local hull of $M_t$ contains a one parameter family of analytic discs passing through the origin. We also show that local polynomial convexity of the union of finitely many pairwise transverse totally-real submanifolds of $\mathbb{C}^n$ at the origin (their intersection) implies local polynomial convexity of the union of their sufficiently small $\mathscr{C}^1$-perturbation at their intersection, the origin. Some new results about the local polynomial convexity of the union of three totally-real planes are also reported.

Abstract:In the paper "Algebraic classification of rational CR structures on topological 5-sphere with transversal holomorphic S^1-action in C^4" (Yau and Yu, Math. Nachrichten 246-247(2002), 207-233), we give algebraic classification of rational CR structures on the topological 5-sphere with transversal holomorphic S^1-action in C^4. Here, algebraic classification of compact strongly pseudoconvex CR manifolds X means classification up to algebraic equivalence, i.e. roughly up to isomorphism of the normalization of the complex analytic variety V which has X as boundary. The problem is intimately related to the study of 3-dimensional isolated rational weighted homogeneous hypersurface singularities with link homeomorphic to S^5. For this, we need the classification of 3-dimensional isolated rational hypersurface singularities with a C*-action. This list is only available at the homepage of one of us. Since there is a desire for a complete list of this classification (cf. Theorem 3.3), we decide to publish it for the convenience of readers.

Abstract:In this article, we introduce a new approach to show the existence and smoothing of simple normal crossing varieties in a given projective space. Our approach relates the above to the existence of nowhere reduced schemes called ribbons and their smoothings via deformation theory of morphisms. As a consequence, we prove results on the existence and smoothing of snc subvarieties $V \subset \mathbb{P}^N$, with two irreducible components, each of which are Fano varieties of dimension $n>2$, embedded inside $\mathbb{P}^{N}$ for effective values of $N$, by the complete linear series of a line bundle $H$. The general fibers of the resulting one parameter families are either smooth Fano, Calabi-Yau or varieties of general type, depending on the positivity of the canonical divisor of their intersections. An interesting consequence of projective smoothing is that it automatically gives a smoothing of the semi-log-canonical (slc) pair $(V, \Delta)$, where $\Delta = cH$, $c < 1$, is a rational multiple of a general hyperplane section of $H$. For threefolds, we are able to give explicit descriptions of the smoothable snc subvarieties due to the classification results of Iskovskikh-Mori-Mukai. In particular, we show the existence of unions V = $Y_1 \bigcup_D Y_2 \subset \mathbb{P}^N$, where $Y_i$'s are smooth anticanonically (resp. bi-anticanonically) embedded Fano threefolds, intersecting along $D$, where $D$ is either a del-Pezzo surface or a $K3$ surface (resp. a smooth surface with ample canonical bundle) and their smoothing in $\mathbb{P}^N$ to smooth Fano or Calabi-Yau threefolds (resp. to threefolds with ample canonical bundle) for various values of $N$ between $10$ and $163$. In cases when the general fiber is a smooth Fano or Calabi-Yau threefold, one can choose $c$ such that $(V, \Delta)$ is a Calabi-Yau pair while in all cases $c$ can be chosen so that $(V, \Delta)$ is a stable pair.

Deformations of Calabi-Yau varieties with $k$-liminal singularities

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to describe certain nonlinear topological obstructions for the existence of first order smoothings of mildly singular Calabi-Yau varieties of dimension at least $4$. For nodal Calabi-Yau threefolds, a necessary and sufficient linear topological condition for the existence of a first order smoothing was given by the first author in 1986. Subsequently, Rollenske-Thomas generalized this picture to nodal Calabi-Yau varieties of odd dimension, by finding a necessary nonlinear topological condition for the existence of a first order smoothing. In a complementary direction, in our recent work, the linear necessary and sufficient conditions for nodal Calabi-Yau threefolds were extended to Calabi-Yau varieties in every dimension with $1$-liminal singularities (which are exactly the ordinary double points in dimension $3$ but not in higher dimensions). In this paper, we give a common formulation of all of these previous results by establishing analogues of the nonlinear topological conditions of Rollenske-Thomas for Calabi-Yau varieties with weighted homogeneous $k$-liminal hypersurface singularities, a broad class of singularities that includes ordinary double points in odd dimensions.

Abstract:Given a smooth 3-fold $Y$, a line bundle $L \to Y$, and a section $s$ of $L$ such that the vanishing locus of $s$ is a normal crossings surface $X$ with graph-like singular locus, we present a way to reconstruct the singularity category of $X$ as a homotopy limit of several copies of the category of matrix factorizations of $xyz : \mathbb{A}^{3} \to \mathbb{A}^{1}$ (the mirror to the Fukaya category of the pair of pants). This extends our previous result for the case where $L$ is trivialized. The key technique is the classification of non-two-periodic autoequivalences of the category of matrix factorizations. We also present a conjectural mirror for these singularity categories in terms of the Rabinowitz wrapped Fukaya categories of Ganatra-Gao-Venkatesh for certain symplectic four-manifolds, and relate this construction to work of Lekili-Ueda and Jeffs.

Abstract:Let X be a compact connected CR manifold in C-N. X is called a rational CR manifold if its geometric genus p(g)(X) is equal to zero. In this paper we classify all rational CR structures on a topological 5-sphere with transverse S-1-action in C-4 up to algebraic equivalence.In fact the main theorem of this paper gives a classification of all 3-dimensional isolated rational weighted homogeneous singularities with links homeomorphic to topological 5-sphere. These are the simplest kind of singularities in some sense.

Abstract:IF A4 is a (not necessarily compact) complex n-manifold with the property that for some compact K c M the subalgebra of H*(M -K) generated by the rational Chern classes is trivial in dim 2 n, then Chern numbers for M not involving the top class c,(M) may be defined almost as usual and-assuming that M has finite Betti numbers--c,(M] may be replaced by the euler characteristic x(M). We encounter this situation when dealing with isolated singularities of complex spaces. Specifically, let X be a contractible Stein space of pure dimension n with isolated singular point x E X and let 7~: x -+ X be a resolution with exceptional set E = IE- l(x)_ Then a deep result of0. Gabber implies that H*(z) --* H*(x - E) is the zero map in dim 2 n (if no coefficient groups are mentioned I mean rational cohomolog). Hence _? admits Chern numbers. From this it is not hard to see that the Milnor fibre X, of any smoothing of X (which after all can be piven the same boundary as 2) also admits Chern numbers. An interesting point is that, since H*(X,) is trivial in dim > n, any nonzero Chern number of X, is a universal linear combination of the euler characteristic and (if n = 2m is even) ci The purpose of this paper is to relate these Chern numbers with analytic invariants of the smoothing or of the singularity itself. Our most general result in this direction is a Riemann-Roth defect theorem (3.3), whose proof depends on a globalization property of smoothings which we establish in an appendix. This globalization property (which was known to hold for certain classes of singularities, e.g. complete intersections and curve singularities) has been previously used for similar purposes by Milnor, Deligne, Laufer, and Wahl[14]. The fact that any smoothing can be globalized is especially relevant to this last paper, as many of its assertions need this as an extra hypothesis (see the remark at the end of this paper). In practice it may be hard to use our results for singularities of dimension n > 2. Nevertheless we do have some applications to higher dimensional singularities. For instance, we prove that for any isolated singularity X pure odd dimension n, and smoothing component S of X, dim (S) + l/(n - l)! (euler characteristic of a general fibre over S) is independent of S. Furthermore, we find a new smoothability condition for odd dimensional X.
