Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to organize some results on the local geometry of CR singular real-analytic manifolds that are images of CR manifolds via a CR map that is a diffeomorphism onto its image. We find a necessary (sufficient in dimension 2) condition for the diffeomorphism to extend to a finite holomorphic map. The multiplicity of this map is a biholomorphic invariant that is precisely the Moser invariant of the image when it is a Bishop surface with vanishing Bishop invariant. In higher dimensions, we study Levi-flat CR singular images and we prove that the set of CR singular points must be large, and in the case of codimension 2, necessarily Levi-flat or complex. We also show that there exist real-analytic CR functions on such images that satisfy the tangential CR conditions at the singular points, yet fail to extend to holomorphic functions in a neighborhood. We provide many examples to illustrate the phenomena that arise.

Abstract:Let X-1 and X-2 be two compact strongly pseudoconvex CR manifolds of dimension 2n - 1 >= 5 which are boundaries of complex varieties V-1 and V-2 with only isolated normal singularities in C-N1 and C-N2, respectively. We show that any nonconstant CR morphism from X-1 to X-2 can be extended to a finite holomorphic covering map from V-1 to V-2 in the case where V-2 has only isolated complete intersection singularities. In particular, there is no nonconstant CR morphism between the links of two isolated complete intersection singularities with different embedding codimensions. Finally, using Kohn-Rossi cohomology, we obtain some sufficient conditions for the nonexistence of CR morphisms from X-1 to X-2.

Abstract:Real-analytic Levi-flat codimension two CR singular submanifolds are a natural generalization to ${\mathbb{C}}^m$, $m > 2$, of Bishop surfaces in ${\mathbb{C}}^2$. Such submanifolds for example arise as zero sets of mixed-holomorphic equations with one variable antiholomorphic. We classify the codimension two Levi-flat CR singular quadrics, and we notice that new types of submanifolds arise in dimension 3 or greater. In fact, the nondegenerate submanifolds, i.e. higher order purturbations of $z_m=\bar{z}_1z_2+\bar{z}_1^2$, have no analogue in dimension 2. We prove that the Levi-foliation extends through the singularity in the real-analytic nondegenerate case. Furthermore, we prove that the quadric is a (convergent) normal form for a natural large class of such submanifolds, and we compute its automorphism group. In general, we find a formal normal form in ${\mathbb{C}}^3$ in the nondegenerate case that shows infinitely many formal invariants.

A stronger result on a finite type, real analytic, generic submanifold M is found in which we assume f a continuous CR function with real analytic imaginary part Im(f). The idea is contained in a general Schwarz Reflection Principle in one complex variable.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider some generalized holomorphic maps between pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. These maps include the CR maps and the transversally holomorphic maps. In terms of some sub-Laplacian or Hessian type Bochner formulas, and comparison theorems in the pseudo-Hermitian version, we are able to establish several Schwarz type results for both the CR maps and the transversally holomorphic maps between pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. Finally, we also discuss the CR hyperbolicity problem for pseudo-Hermitian manifolds.

Abstract:We say that a CR singular submanifold $M$ has a removable CR singularity if the CR structure at the CR points of $M$ extends through the singularity as an abstract CR structure on $M$. We study such real-analytic submanifolds, in which case removability is equivalent to $M$ being the image of a generic real-analytic submanifold $N$ under a holomorphic map that is a diffeomorphism of $N$ onto $M$, what we call a CR image. We study the stability of the CR singularity under perturbation, the associated quadratic invariants, and conditions for removability of a CR singularity. A lemma is also proved about perturbing away the zeros of holomorphic functions on CR submanifolds, which could be of independent interest.

Abstract:In this paper, we give some rigidity results for both harmonic and pseudoharmonic maps from CR manifolds into Riemannian manifolds or Kahler manifolds. Some basicity, pluriharmonicity and Siu-Sampson type results are established for both harmonic maps and pseudoharmonic maps.

Abstract:In this paper we generalize the notion of regular homotopy of immersions of a closed connected n-manifold into R^{2n-1} to locally generic mappings. The main result is that if n=2 then two mappings with singularities are regularly homotopic if and only if they have the same number of cross-cap (or Whitney-umbrella) singularities. As an application, we get a description of the path-components of the space of those immersions of a surface into R^4 whose projections into R^3 are locally generic.

Abstract:We study the minimality of an isometric immersion of a Riemannian manifold into a strictly pseudoconvex CR manifold M endowed with the Webster metric hence consider a version of the CR Yamabe problem for CR manifolds with boundary. This occurs as the Yamabe problem for the Fefferman metric (a Lorentzian metric associated to a choice of contact structure θ on M , [20]) on the total space of the canonical circle bundle S 1 →C(M) → π M (a manifold with boundary ∂C(M)= π −1 (∂M) and is shown to be a nonlinear subelliptic problem of variational origin. For any real surface N={φ=0}⊂ H 1 we show that the mean curvature vector of N⇀ H 1 is expressed by H=− 1 2 ∑ j=1 2 X j (|Xφ | −1 X j φ)ξ provided that N is tangent to the characteristic direction T of ( H 1 , θ 0 ) , thus demonstrating the relationship between the classical theory of submanifolds in Riemannian manifolds (cf. e.g.[7]) and the newer investigations in [1], [6], [8] and [16]. Given an isometric immersion Ψ:N→ H n of a Riemannian manifold into the Heisenberg group we show that ΔΨ=2J T ⊥ hence start a Weierstrass representation theory for minimal surfaces in H n .

Triharmonic CMC Hypersurfaces in Space Forms

Abstract: A $k$-harmonic map is a critical point of the $k$-energy in the space of smooth maps between two Riemannian manifolds. In this paper, we prove that if $M^n (n\ge 3)$ is a CMC proper triharmonic hypersurface with at most three distinct principal curvatures in a space form $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}(c)$, then $M$ has constant scalar curvature. This supports the generalized Chen's conjecture when $c\le 0$. When $c=1$, we give an optimal upper bound of the mean curvature $H$ for a non-totally umbilical proper CMC $k$-harmonic hypersurface with constant scalar curvature in a sphere. We also prove that a proper CMC triharmonic with two distinct principal curvatures in a sphere must be locally a generalized Clifford torus with suitable parameters. At last, we give the complete classification of the 3-dimensional closed proper CMC triharmonic hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{S}^{4}$.

Abstract:We study the simultaneous filling and embedding problem for a CR family of compact strongly pseudoconvex CR manifolds of dimension at least 5. We also derive, as a consequence, the normality of the Stein fibers of the filled-in Stein space under the constant dimensionality assumption of the first Kohn-Rossi cohomology group of the fiber CR manifolds. Two main ingredients for our approach are the work of Catlin on the solution of the ∂-equation with mixed boundary conditions and the work of Siu and Ling on the study of the Grauert direct image theory for a (1,1)-convex-concave family of complex spaces.

By Bochner formulas and comparison theorems, we establish related Schwarz-type results. As corollaries, the Liouville theorem and little Picard theorem for basic CR functions are deduced. Finally, we study CR Caratheodory pseudo-distance on CR manifolds.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the problem of constructing a smooth Levi-flat hypersurface locally or globally attached to a real codimension two submanifold in $\mathbb C^{n+1}$, or more generally in a Stein manifold, with elliptic CR singularities, a research direction originated from a fundamental and classical paper of E. Bishop. Earlier works along these lines include those by many prominent mathematicians working both on complex analysis and geometry. We prove that a compact smooth (or, real analytic) real codimension two submanifold $M$, that is contained in the boundary of a smoothly bounded strongly pseudoconvex domain, with a natural and necessary condition called CR non-minimal condition at CR points and with two elliptic CR singular points bounds a smooth-up-to-boundary (real analytic-up-to-boundary, respectively) Levi-flat hypersurface $\widehat{M}$. This answers a well-known question left open from the work of Dolbeault-Tomassini-Zaitsev, or a generalized version of a problem already asked by Bishop in 1965. Our study here reveals an intricate interaction of several complex analysis with other fields such as symplectic geometry and foliation theory.

Abstract:We give a holomorphic extension result from non generic CR submanifold of $\C^L$ of positive CR dimension. We consider $N$ a non generic CR submanifold given by $N=\{\n,h(\n)\}$ where $\n$ is a generic submanifold of some $\C^{\ell}$ and $h$ is a CR map from $\n$ into $\C^n$. We prove that if $\n$ is a hypersurface then any CR distribution on $N$ extends holomorphically to a complex transversal wedge, we then generalize this result for arbitrary $\n$ in the case where the graphing function $h$ is decomposable at some $p'\in \n$. We show that any CR distribution on $N$ that is decomposable at $p=(p',h(p'))$ extends holomorphically to a complex transversal wedge.

Abstract:By a beautiful theorem of Harvey and Lawson, strongly pseudoconvex connected compact embeddable CR manifolds are the boundaries of subvarieties in $\mathbb{C}^{N}$ with only normal isolated singularities. This leads to a natural question of how to determine the properties of the interior singularities from the CR manifolds and vice versa. In this paper, we give a survey on the interplay between CR Geometry and Algebraic Geometry for the last 30 years or so.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a Stein manifold of dimension at least 3. Given a compact codimension 2 real analytic submanifold $M$ of $X$, that is the boundary of a compact Levi-flat hypersurface $H$, we study the regularity of $H$. Suppose that the CR singularities of $M$ are an $\mathcal{O}(X)$-convex set. For example, suppose $M$ has only finitely many CR singularities, which is a generic condition. Then $H$ must in fact be a real analytic submanifold. If $M$ is real algebraic, it follows that $H$ is real algebraic and in fact extends past $M$, even near CR singularities. To prove these results we provide two variations on a theorem of Malgrange, that a smooth submanifold contained in a real analytic subvariety of the same dimension is itself real analytic. We prove a similar theorem for submanifolds with boundary, and another one for subanalytic sets.

Abstract:We solve the Levi-flat Plateau problem in the following case. Let $M \subset {\mathbb C}^{n+1}$, $n \geq 2$, be a connected compact real-analytic codimension-two submanifold with only nondegenerate CR singularities. Suppose $M$ is a diffeomorphic image via a real-analytic CR map of a real-analytic hypersurface in ${\mathbb C}^n \times {\mathbb R}$ with only nondegenerate CR singularities. Then there exists a unique compact real-analytic Levi-flat hypersurface, nonsingular except possibly for self-intersections, with boundary $M$. We also study boundary regularity of CR automorphisms of domains in ${\mathbb C}^n \times {\mathbb R}$.

Abstract:In this paper, we study CR maps between hyperquadrics and Winkelmann hypersurfaces. Based on a previous study on the CR Ahlfors derivative of Lamel-Son and a recent result of Huang-Lu-Tang-Xiao on CR maps between hyperquadrics, we prove that a transversal CR map from a hyperquadric into a hyperquadric or a Winkelmann hypersurface extends to a local holomorphic isometric embedding with respect to certain Kähler metrics if and only if the Hermitian part of its CR Ahlfors derivative vanishes on an open set of the source. Our proof is based on relating the geometric rank of a CR map into a hyperquadric and its CR Ahlfors derivative.
