Abstract:Real-analytic Levi-flat codimension two CR singular submanifolds are a natural generalization to ${\mathbb{C}}^m$, $m > 2$, of Bishop surfaces in ${\mathbb{C}}^2$. Such submanifolds for example arise as zero sets of mixed-holomorphic equations with one variable antiholomorphic. We classify the codimension two Levi-flat CR singular quadrics, and we notice that new types of submanifolds arise in dimension 3 or greater. In fact, the nondegenerate submanifolds, i.e. higher order purturbations of $z_m=\bar{z}_1z_2+\bar{z}_1^2$, have no analogue in dimension 2. We prove that the Levi-foliation extends through the singularity in the real-analytic nondegenerate case. Furthermore, we prove that the quadric is a (convergent) normal form for a natural large class of such submanifolds, and we compute its automorphism group. In general, we find a formal normal form in ${\mathbb{C}}^3$ in the nondegenerate case that shows infinitely many formal invariants.

Abstract:The main purpose of this article is to lay the foundations for a classification of isolated hypersurface singularities in positive characteristic. Although our article is in the spirit of Arnol'd who classified real an complex hypersurfaces in the 1970's with respect to right equivalence, several new phenomena occur in positive characteristic. Already the notion of isolated singularity is different for right resp. contact equivalence over fields of characteristic other than zero. The heart of this paper consists of the study of different notions of non-degeneracy and the associated piecewise filtrations induced by the Newton diagram of a power series f. We introduce the conditions AC and AAC which modify and generalise the conditions A and AA of Arnol'd resp. Wall and which allow the classification with respect to contact equivalence in any characteristic. Using this we deduce normal forms and rather sharp determinacy bounds for f with respect to right and contact equivalence. We apply this to classify hypersurface singularities of low modality in positive characteristic.

Models of $2$-nondegenerate CR hypersurface in $\mathbb{C}^N$

Abstract:We show that every point in a uniformly $2$-nondegenerate CR hypersurface is canonically associated with a model $2$-nondegenerate structure. The $2$-nondegenerate models are basic CR invariants playing the same fundamental role as quadrics do in the Levi nondegenerate case. We characterize all $2$-nondegenerate models and show that the moduli space of such hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{C}^N$ is infinite dimensional for each $N>3$. We derive a normal form for these models' defining equations that is unique up to an action of a finite dimensional Lie group. We generalize recently introduced CR invariants termed modified symbols, and show how to compute these intrinsically defined invariants from a model's defining equation. We show that these models automatically possess infinitesimal symmetries spanning a complement to their Levi kernel and derive explicit formulas for them.

Abstract:We say that a CR singular submanifold $M$ has a removable CR singularity if the CR structure at the CR points of $M$ extends through the singularity as an abstract CR structure on $M$. We study such real-analytic submanifolds, in which case removability is equivalent to $M$ being the image of a generic real-analytic submanifold $N$ under a holomorphic map that is a diffeomorphism of $N$ onto $M$, what we call a CR image. We study the stability of the CR singularity under perturbation, the associated quadratic invariants, and conditions for removability of a CR singularity. A lemma is also proved about perturbing away the zeros of holomorphic functions on CR submanifolds, which could be of independent interest.

Abstract:A classification of normal affine surfaces admitting a $\bf C^*$-action was given in the work of Białynicki-Birula, Fieseler and L. Kaup, Orlik and Wagreich, Rynes and others. We provide a simple alternative description of such surfaces in terms of their graded rings as well as by defining equations. This is based on a generalization of the Dolgachev-Pinkham-Demazure construction in the case of a hyperbolic grading. As an apllication we determine the structure of singularities, of the orbits and the divisor class groups for such surfaces.

These include torsors and numerically trivial automorphisms, but our main application is the completion of the classification of Enriques surfaces with finite automorphism groups started by Kondo, Nikulin, Martin and Katsura-Kondo-Martin.

Abstract:A smooth affine minimal surface with indefinite metric can be obtained from a pair of smooth non-intersecting spatial curves by Lelieuvre's formulas. These surfaces may present singularities, which are generically cuspidal edges and swallowtails. By discretizing the initial curves, one can obtain by the discrete Lelieuvre's formulas a discrete affine minimal surface with indefinite metric. The aim of this paper is to define the singular edges and vertices of the corresponding discrete asymptotic net in such a way that the most relevant properties of the singular set of the smooth version remain valid.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to organize some results on the local geometry of CR singular real-analytic manifolds that are images of CR manifolds via a CR map that is a diffeomorphism onto its image. We find a necessary (sufficient in dimension 2) condition for the diffeomorphism to extend to a finite holomorphic map. The multiplicity of this map is a biholomorphic invariant that is precisely the Moser invariant of the image when it is a Bishop surface with vanishing Bishop invariant. In higher dimensions, we study Levi-flat CR singular images and we prove that the set of CR singular points must be large, and in the case of codimension 2, necessarily Levi-flat or complex. We also show that there exist real-analytic CR functions on such images that satisfy the tangential CR conditions at the singular points, yet fail to extend to holomorphic functions in a neighborhood. We provide many examples to illustrate the phenomena that arise.

Abstract:Under certain geometric condition, the surfaces in $\mathbb{C}^2$ with isolated CR singularity at the origin and with cubic lowest degree homogeneous term in its graph near the origin, can be reduced, up to biholomorphism of $\mathbb{C}^2$, to a one parameter family of the form \[ M_t:=\left\{(z,w)\in\mathbb{C}^2: w=z^2\overline{z}+tz\overline{z}^2+\dfrac{t^2}{3} \overline{z}^3+o(|z|^3)\right\},\;\; t\in (0,\infty) \] near the origin. We prove that $M_t$ is not locally polynomially convex if $t<1$. The local hull contains a ball centred at the origin if $t<\sqrt{3}/2$. We also prove that $M_t$ is locally polynomially convex for $t\geq\dfrac{\sqrt{15-\sqrt{33}}}{2\sqrt{2}}=1.076...$. We show that, for $\sqrt{3}/2\leq t<1$, the local hull of $M_t$ contains a one parameter family of analytic discs passing through the origin. We also show that local polynomial convexity of the union of finitely many pairwise transverse totally-real submanifolds of $\mathbb{C}^n$ at the origin (their intersection) implies local polynomial convexity of the union of their sufficiently small $\mathscr{C}^1$-perturbation at their intersection, the origin. Some new results about the local polynomial convexity of the union of three totally-real planes are also reported.

Defining equations of $7$-dimensional model CR hypersurfaces

Abstract:We obtain a complete normal form for models of real analytic uniformly $2$-nondegenerate CR hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{C}^4$, and present a detailed study of their local invariants. The normal form illustrates that $2$-nondegenerate models in $\mathbb{C}^4$ comprise a moduli space parameterized by two univariate holomorphic functions, which is in sharp contrast to the well known Levi-nondegenerate setting and the more recently discovered behavior of $2$-nondegenerate structures in $\mathbb{C}^3$. In further contrast to these previously studied settings, we demonstrate that not all $2$-nondegenerate structures in $\mathbb{C}^4$ arise as perturbations of homogeneous models. We derive defining equations for the homogeneous models, a set of $9$ structures, and find explicit formulas for their infinitesimal symmetries.

Abstract:We study characteristic classes of hypersurfaces in the complex projective space, with emphasis on secants to rational normal curves. For $Sec_k C\subset \mathbb{P}^{n}$, the secant of $k$ points to a rational normal curve $C\subset \mathbb{P}^n$, we compute the Hilbert series and the topological Euler characteristic. For $n=2r$ and $k=r$, the case when $Sec_r C\subset \mathbb{P}^{2r}$ is a hypersurface, we show that the dual $(Sec_r C)^*$ is isomorphic to the Veronese variety $\nu_2(\mathbb{P}^r)$, from which we obtain, for $Sec_r C$, formulas for the Mather class, the generic Euclidean distance degree and its polar degrees. Furthermore, we present an explicit formula for the topological degree of the gradient map $\phi_r \colon \mathbb{P}^{2r} \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}^{2r} $ associated with $Sec_r C$, and as a consequence we obtain an affirmative answer for a conjecture by M. Mostafazadehfard and A. Simis: for $r \geq 2$, the hypersurface $Sec_r C\subset \mathbb{P}^{2r}$ is not homaloidal. From computations in particular cases we are led to a conjecture, namely, explicit formulas for the projective degrees of the gradient map $\phi_r$ and the Schwartz-MacPherson class $c_{SM}(Sec_r C)\in A_* \mathbb{P}^{2r}$, for all $r$. Abstract:A differential 1-form $\alpha$ on a manifold of odd dimension $2n+1$, which satisfies the contact condition $\alpha \wedge (d\alpha)^n \neq 0$ almost everywhere, but which vanishes at a point $O$, i.e. $\alpha (O) = 0$, is called a \textit{singular contact form} at $O$. The aim of this paper is to study local normal forms (formal, analytic and smooth) of such singular contact forms. Our study leads naturally to the study of normal forms of singular primitive 1-forms of a symplectic form $\omega$ in dimension $2n$, i.e. differential 1-forms $\gamma$ which vanish at a point and such that $d\gamma = \omega$, and their corresponding conformal vector fields. Our results are an extension and improvement of previous results obtained by other authors, in particular Lychagin \cite{Lychagin-1stOrder1975}, Webster \cite{Webster-1stOrder1987} and Zhitomirskii \cite{Zhito-1Form1986,Zhito-1Form1992}. We make use of both the classical normalization techniques and the toric approach to the normalization problem for dynamical systems \cite{Zung_Birkhoff2005, Zung_Integrable2016, Zung_AA2018}.

Abstract:Our previous papers introduce topological notions of normal crossings symplectic divisor and variety, show that they are equivalent, in a suitable sense, to the corresponding geometric notions, and establish a topological smoothability criterion for normal crossings symplectic varieties. The present paper constructs a blowup, a complex line bundle, and a logarithmic tangent bundle naturally associated with a normal crossings symplectic divisor and determines the Chern class of the last bundle. These structures have applications in constructions and analysis of various moduli spaces. As a corollary of the Chern class formula for the logarithmic tangent bundle, we refine Aluffi's formula for the Chern class of the tangent bundle of the blowup at a complete intersection to account for the torsion and extend it to the blowup at the deepest stratum of an arbitrary normal crossings divisor.

Abstract:We solve the Levi-flat Plateau problem in the following case. Let $M \subset {\mathbb C}^{n+1}$, $n \geq 2$, be a connected compact real-analytic codimension-two submanifold with only nondegenerate CR singularities. Suppose $M$ is a diffeomorphic image via a real-analytic CR map of a real-analytic hypersurface in ${\mathbb C}^n \times {\mathbb R}$ with only nondegenerate CR singularities. Then there exists a unique compact real-analytic Levi-flat hypersurface, nonsingular except possibly for self-intersections, with boundary $M$. We also study boundary regularity of CR automorphisms of domains in ${\mathbb C}^n \times {\mathbb R}$.
