Abstract:We classify smooth projective varieties of Picard rank 2 which has two structures of blow-up of projective space along smooth subvarieties of different dimensions. This gives a characterization of the so called quadro-cubic Cremona transformation.

Abstract:Assuming Hartshorne's conjecture on complete intersections, we classify projective bundles over projective spaces which has a smooth blow up structure over another projective space. Under some assumptions, we also classify projective bundles over projective spaces which has a smooth blow up structure over some arbitrary smooth projective variety, not necessarily a projective space. We verify which of the globally generated vector bundles over projective space of first Chern class at most five has the property that their projectivisation has a smooth blow up structure, with no additional assumption. In the way, we get some new examples of varieties with both projective bundle and smooth blow up structures.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective horospherical variety of Picard number one. We show that a uniruled projective manifold of Picard number one is biholomorphic to $X$ if its variety of minimal rational tangents at a general point is projectively equivalent to that of $X$. To get a local flatness of the geometric structure arising from the variety of minimal rational tangents, we apply the methods of $W$-normal complete step prolongations. We compute the associated Lie algebra cohomology space of degree two and show the vanishing of holomorphic sections of the vector bundle having this cohomology space as a fiber.

Abstract:We investigate the moduli space ${\mathcal P}_g$ of smooth complex projective curves of genus $g$ equipped with a projective structure. When $g\, \geq\, 3$, it is shown that this moduli space ${\mathcal P}_g$ does not admit any nonconstant algebraic function. This is in contrast with the case of ${\mathcal P}_2$ which is known to be an affine variety.

Abstract:In this paper, we study certain moduli spaces of vector bundles on the blowup of the projective plane in at least 10 very general points. Moduli spaces of sheaves on general type surfaces may be nonreduced, reducible and even disconnected. In contrast, moduli spaces of sheaves on minimal rational surfaces and certain del Pezzo surfaces are irreducible and smooth along the locus of stable bundles. We find examples of moduli spaces of vector bundles on more general blowups of the projective plane that are disconnected and have components of different dimensions. In fact, assuming the SHGH Conjecture, we can find moduli spaces with arbitrarily many components of arbitrarily large dimension.

Abstract:Geometric structures modeled on rational homogeneous manifolds are studied to characterize rational homogeneous manifolds and to prove their deformation rigidity. To generalize these characterizations and deformation rigidity results to quasihomogeneous varieties, we first study horospherical varieties and geometric structures modeled on horospherical varieties. Using Cartan geometry, we prove that a geometric structure modeled on a smooth projective horospherical variety of Picard number one is locally equivalent to the standard geometric structure when the geometric structure is defined on a Fano manifold of Picard number one.

Non-isomorphic smooth compactifications of the moduli space of cubic surfaces

Abstract:The moduli space of complex cubic surfaces has three different, but isomorphic, compact realizations: as a GIT quotient, as a Baily--Borel compactification of a ball quotient, and as a compactified $K$-moduli space. From all three perspectives, there is a unique boundary point corresponding to non-stable surfaces. From the GIT point of view, to deal with this point, it is natural to consider the Kirwan blowup, while from the ball quotient point of view it is natural to consider the toroidal compactification. Both these spaces have the same cohomology and and it is therefore natural to ask whether they are isomorphic. Here we show that this is in fact not the case. Indeed, we show the more refined statement that both spaces are equivalent in the Grothendieck ring, but not $K$-equivalent. Along the way, we establish a number of results and techniques for dealing with singularities and canonical classes of Kirwan blowups and toroidal compactifications of ball quotients.

Abstract:We study when two projective bundles over two arbitrary smooth projective varieties of different dimensions can be isomorphic. We show that two multi-projective bundles (fibre product of projective bundles) over different projective spaces cannot be isomorphic, except in the trivial case. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for the top varieties of two height 3 towers of projective bundles being isomorphic, under certain assumptions.

Abstract:We study smooth complex projective varieties X of maximal Albanese dimension and of general type satisfying (chi)(X, O-X) = 0. We prove that the Albanese variety of X has at least three simple factors. Examples were constructed by Ein and Lazarsfeld, and we prove that in dimension 3, these examples are (up to abelian etale covers) the only ones. By results of 'lien, another source of examples is provided by varieties X of maximal Albanese dimension and of general type satisfying h(0) (X, omega(X)) = 1. Examples were constructed by Chen and Hawn, and again, we prove that in dimension 3, these examples are (up to abelian etale covers) the only ones. We also formulate a conjecture on the general structure of these varieties in all dimensions.

Abstract:A set of multi-homogeneous equations for the Jacobian of a genus two curve is given. The approach used is to write down affine equations for the Jacobian minus various tranlations of the Theta-divisor by [2]-division points, and then to write down affine glue equations for the overlaps. Taking multi-projective completions for all of these then yields a complete multi-projective two-dimensional variety whose points are in one-to-one correspondence with degree zero divisor classes on the curve (i.e. the Picard group). This multi-projective variety then becomes a complete projective two-dimensional variety under the Segre imbedding.

Abstract:In this note we propose the generalization of the notion of a holomorphic contact structure on a manifold (smooth variety) to varieties with rational singularities and prove basic properties of such objects. Natural examples of singular contact varieties come from the theory of nilpotent orbits: every projectivization of the closure of a nilpotent orbit in a semisimple Lie algebra satisfies our definition after normalization. We show the correspondence between symplectic varieties with the structure of a $\mathbb{C}^*$-bundle and the contact ones along with the existence of the stratification à la Kaledin. In the projective case we demonstrate the equivalence between crepant and contact resolutions of singularities, show the uniruledness and give a full classification of projective contact varieties in dimension 3.

Abstract:Brunella's classification implies that every smooth foliation on a compact complex surface admits a singular transversely projective structure. However, Biswas and Sorin's recent work shows that certain foliations on compact complex surfaces, despite possessing a singular transversely projective structure, do not admit a regular transversely projective structure. Here, we describe the smooth foliations on compact complex surfaces which fail to possess a regular transversely projective structure.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of rooftop flip, namely a small modification among normal projective varieties which is modeled by a smooth projective variety of Picard number 2 admitting two projective bundle structures. Examples include the Atiyah flop and the Mukai flop, modeled respectively by $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$ and by $\mathbb{P}\left(T_{\mathbb{P}^2}\right)$. Using the Morelli-Wlodarczyk cobordism, we prove that any smooth projective variety of Picard number 1, endowed with a $\mathbb{C}^*$-action with only two fixed point components, induces a rooftop flip.
