Abstract:We describe smooth projective horospherical varieties with Picard number 1. Moreover we prove that the automorphism group of any such variety acts with at most two orbits and we give a geometric characterisation of non-homogeneous ones.

Abstract:We classify all smooth projective horospherical varieties with Picard number 1. We prove that the automorphism group of any such variety X acts with at most two orbits and that this group still acts with only two orbits on X blown up at the closed orbit. We characterize all smooth projective two-orbits varieties with Picard number 1 that satisfy this latter property.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective horospherical variety of Picard number one. We show that a uniruled projective manifold of Picard number one is biholomorphic to $X$ if its variety of minimal rational tangents at a general point is projectively equivalent to that of $X$. To get a local flatness of the geometric structure arising from the variety of minimal rational tangents, we apply the methods of $W$-normal complete step prolongations. We compute the associated Lie algebra cohomology space of degree two and show the vanishing of holomorphic sections of the vector bundle having this cohomology space as a fiber.

Abstract:Geometric structures modeled on rational homogeneous manifolds are studied to characterize rational homogeneous manifolds and to prove their deformation rigidity. To generalize these characterizations and deformation rigidity results to quasihomogeneous varieties, we first study horospherical varieties and geometric structures modeled on horospherical varieties. Using Cartan geometry, we prove that a geometric structure modeled on a smooth projective horospherical variety of Picard number one is locally equivalent to the standard geometric structure when the geometric structure is defined on a Fano manifold of Picard number one.

Abstract:A horospherical variety is a normal algebraic variety where a reductive algebraic group acts with an open orbit which is a torus bundle over a flag variety. For example, toric varieties and flag varieties are horospherical. In this paper, we classify Fano horospherical varieties in terms of certain rational polytopes that generalize the reflexive polytopes considered by V. Batyrev. Then, we obtain an upper bound on the degree of smooth Fano horospherical varieties, analogus to that given by O. Debarre in the toric case. We extend a recent result of C. Casagrande: the Picard number of any Fano Q-factorial horospherical variety is bounded by twice the dimension.

Abstract:Our main result is a combinatorial characterization of when a horospherical variety has (at worst) quotient singularities. Using this characterization, we show that every quasiprojective horospherical variety with quotient singularities is globally the quotient of a smooth variety by a finite abelian group.

Let the closed Mori cone $\mathrm{NE}(X)=\mathbb R_{\ge0}[C_1]+\mathbb R_{\ge0}[C_2]$ such that $C_1$ and $C_2$ with $C_2^2<0$ are some curves on $X$. Abstract:We study smooth varieties of Picard number one admitting a special dominating family of rational curves and an equalized $\mathbb{C}^*$-action. In particular we show that $X$ is a smooth variety of Picard number one with nef tangent bundle admitting an equalized $\mathbb{C}^*$-action with an isolated extremal fixed point if and only if $X$ is an irreducible Hermitian symmetric space.

Abstract:We study smooth complex projective varieties X of maximal Albanese dimension and of general type satisfying (chi)(X, O-X) = 0. We prove that the Albanese variety of X has at least three simple factors. Examples were constructed by Ein and Lazarsfeld, and we prove that in dimension 3, these examples are (up to abelian etale covers) the only ones. By results of 'lien, another source of examples is provided by varieties X of maximal Albanese dimension and of general type satisfying h(0) (X, omega(X)) = 1. Examples were constructed by Chen and Hawn, and again, we prove that in dimension 3, these examples are (up to abelian etale covers) the only ones. We also formulate a conjecture on the general structure of these varieties in all dimensions.

Abstract:We construct a smooth projective algebraic variety $X_{\Psi}$ that compactifies an equivariant vector subbundle of the cotangent bundle of the flag variety of $\mathop{GL} ( n )$ (corresponding to a root ideal $\Psi$). The variety $X_\Psi$ carries natural class of line bundles whose spaces of global sections realize the Catalan functions defined in Chen-Haiman [thesis, UCBerkeley] and studied in Blasiak-Morse-Pun-Summers [J. Amer. Math. Soc. (2019), Invent. Math. (2024)]. We prove the vanishing conjectures of Chen-Haiman and (the tame cases of these of) Blasiak-Morse-Pun, as well as the monotonicity conjectures of Shimozono-Weyman [Electronic J. Combin. (2000)] using the geometry of $X_\Psi$.

Abstract:We study character varieties arising as moduli of representations of an orientable surface group into a reductive group $G$. We first show that if $G/Z$ acts freely on the representation variety, then both the representation variety and the character variety are smooth and equidimensional. Next, we count points on a family of smooth character varieties; namely, those involving both regular semisimple and regular unipotent monodromy. In particular, we show that these varieties are polynomial count and obtain an explicit expression for their $E$-polynomials. Finally, by analysing the $E$-polynomial, we determine certain topological invariants of these varieties such as the Euler characteristic and the number of connected components. As an application, we give an example of a cohomologically rigid representation which is not physically rigid.

Abstract:We prove that every K3 surface with automorphism group $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^2$ admits an explicit birational model as a double sextic surface. This model is canonical for Picard number greater than 10. For Picard number greater than 9, the K3 surfaces in question possess a second birational model, in the form of a projective quartic hypersurface, generalizing the Inose quartic.

Abstract:Algebraic hyperbolicity serves as a bridge between differential geometry and algebraic geometry. Generally, it is difficult to show that a given projective variety is algebraically hyperbolic. However, it was established recently that a very general surface of degree at least five in projective space is algebraically hyperbolic. We are interested in generalizing the study of surfaces in projective space to surfaces in smooth projective toric threefolds with Picard rank 2 or 3. Following Kleinschmidt and Batyrev, we explore the combinatorial description of smooth projective toric threefolds with Picard rank 2 and 3. We then use Haase and Ilten's method of finding algebraically hyperbolic surfaces in toric threefolds. As a result, we determine many algebraically hyperbolic surfaces in each of these varieties.

Abstract:The complete classification of the orbits on subspaces under the action of the projective stabiliser of (classical) algebraic varieties is a challenging task, and few classifications are complete. We focus on a particular action of $\PGL(2,q^2)$ (and $\PSL(2,q^2)$) arising from the Hermitian Veronese curve in $\PG(3, q^2)$, a maximal rational curve embedded on a smooth Hermitian surface with some fascinating properties. The study of its orbits leads to a new construction of quasi-Hermitian surfaces: sets of points with the same combinatorial and geometric properties as a non-degenerate Hermitian surface.
