Abstract:In the first part of this paper, we construct mod 2 elliptic genera on manifolds of dimensions 8k+1, 8k+2 by mod 2 index formulas of Dirac operators. They are given by mod 2 modular forms or mod 2 automorphic functions. We also obtain an integral formula for the mod 2 index of the Dirac operator. As a by-product we find topological obstructions to group actions. In the second part, we construct higher elliptic genera and prove some of their rigidity properties under group actions. In the third part we write down characteristic series for all Witten genera by Jacobi theta-functions. The modular property and transformation formulas of elliptic genera then follow easily. We shall also prove that Krichever's genera, which come from integrable systems, can be written as indices of twisted Dirac operators forSU-manifolds. Some general discussions about elliptic genera are given.

Abstract:As contributions to the Ramanujan theory of elliptic functions to alternative bases, Li-Chien Shen has developed families of elliptic functions from the hypergeometric functions $F(\tfrac{1}{3}, \tfrac{2}{3}; \tfrac{1}{2} ; \bullet)$ and $F(\tfrac{1}{4}, \tfrac{3}{4}; \tfrac{1}{2} ; \bullet)$. We apply his methods to the hypergeometric function $F(\tfrac{1}{6}, \tfrac{5}{6}; \tfrac{1}{2} ; \bullet)$.

Ramanujan-Shen's differential equations for Eisenstein series of level 2

Abstract:Ramanujan (1916) and Shen (1999) discovered differential equations for classical Eisenstein series. Motivated by them, we derive new differential equations for Eisenstein series of level 2 from the second kind of Jacobi theta function. This gives a new characterization of a system of differential equations by Ablowitz-Chakravarty-Hahn (2006), Hahn (2008), Kaneko-Koike (2003), Maier (2011) and Toh (2011). As application, we show some arithmetic results on Ramanujan's tau function.

Abstract:Using the Wolfram NumberTheory package and the Recognize command, together with numerical estimates involving the elliptic lambda and elliptic alpha functions, Bagis and Glasser, in 2013, introduced a conjectural Ramanujan-type series related to the class number $h(-d) = 1$ for a quadratic form with discriminant $d = 163$. This conjectured series is of level one and has positive terms, and recalls the Chudnovsky brothers' alternating series of the same level, given the connection between the Chudnovsky-Chudnovsky formula and the Heegner number $d = 163$ such that $\mathbb{Q}\left( \sqrt{-d} \right)$ has class number one. We prove Bagis and Glasser's conjecture by proving evaluations for $\lambda^{\ast}(163)$ and $\alpha(163)$, which we derive using the Chudnovsky brothers' formula together with the analytic continuation of a formula due to the Borwein brothers for Ramanujan-type series of level one. As a byproduct of our method, we obtain an infinite family of Ramanujan-type series for $\frac{1}{\pi}$ generalizing the Chudnovsky algorithm.

Proof of a conjecture of Dahmen and Beukers on counting integral Lam\'{e} equations with finite monodromy

Abstract: In this paper, we prove Dahmen and Beukers' conjecture that the number of integral Lam\'{e} equations with index $n$ modulo scalar equivalence with the monodromy group dihedral $D_{N}$ of order $2N$ is given by \[L_{n}(N)=\frac{1}{2}\left( \frac{n(n+1)\Psi(N)}{24}-\left( a_{n}% \phi(N)+b_{n}\phi(\tfrac{N}{2}) \right) \right) +\frac{2}% {3}\varepsilon_{n}(N).\] Our main tool is the new pre-modular form $Z_{r,s}^{(n)}(\tau)$ of weight $n(n+1)/2$ introduced by Lin and Wang \cite{LW2} and the associated modular form $M_{n,N}(\tau):=\prod_{(r,s)}Z_{r,s}^{(n)}(\tau)$ of weight $\Psi(N)n(n+1)/{2}$, where the product runs over all $N$-torsion points $(r,s)$ of exact order $N$. We show that this conjecture is equivalent to the precise formula of the vanishing order of $M_{n,N}(\tau)$ at infinity: \[v_{\infty}(M_{n,N}(\tau))=a_{n}\phi(N)+b_{n}\phi( N/2).\] This formula is extremely hard to prove because the explicit expression of $Z_{r,s}^{(n)}(\tau)$ is not known for general $n$. Here we succeed to prove it by using certain Painlev\'{e} VI equations. Our result also indicates that this conjecture is intimately connected with the problem of counting pole numbers of algebraic solutions of certain Painlev\'{e} VI equations. The main results of this paper has been announced in \cite{Lin-CDM}.

Abstract:For $n=0,1,2,\ldots$ let $d_n^{(r)}(x)=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom{x+r+k}k\binom{x-r}{n-k}$. In this paper we illustrate the connection between $\{d_n^{(r)}(x)\}$ and Meixner polynomials. New formulas and recurrence relations for $d_n^{(r)}(x)$ are obtained, and a new proof of the formula for $d_n^{(r)}(x)^2$ is also given. In addition, for $r>-\frac 12$ and $n\ge 2$ we show that $d_n^{(r)}(x)>\frac{(2x+1)^n}{n!}>0$ for $x>-\frac 12$, and $(-1)^nd_n^{(r)}(x)>0$ for $x<-\frac 12$.

Abstract:It is a classic result of Selberg in the 1950's that $\theta_2 = 2/3$, where $\theta_2$ is the level of distribution of the divisor function in arithmetic progressions (defined more precisely below). Selberg applies this estimate, together with his $\Lambda^2$ sieve, to prove weak forms of the binary Goldbach and twin prime conjectures. In this note, we give an unconditional proof of Selberg's first result with smooth weights for prime moduli, and put forth a hypothesis via subconvexity to bootstrap to level $4/5$. Contingent outcomes of our proposal is an improvement of Selberg's second result on approximations to twin primes and in lowering bounds on gaps between primes.

Abstract:We calculate the second order derivatives of the Ronkin function in the case of an affine linear polynomial in three variables and give an expression of them in terms of complete elliptic integrals and hypergeometric functions. This gives a semi-explicit expression of the associated Monge-Ampère measure, the Ronkin measure.

Then Dn(1) is the n-th central Delannoy number Dn, and sn(1) is the n-th little Schröder number sn. In this paper we obtain some surprising arithmetic properties of Dn(x) and sn(x). We show that1n∑k=0n−1Dk(x)sk+1(x)∈Z[x(x+1)]for alln=1,2,3,…. Moreover, for any odd prime p and p-adic integer x≢0,−1(modp), we establish the supercongruence∑k=0p−1Dk(x)sk+1(x)≡0(modp2). As an application we confirm Conjecture 5.5 in [S14a], in particular we prove that1n∑k=0n−1TkMk(−3)n−1−k∈Zfor alln=1,2,3,…, where Tk is the k-th central trinomial coefficient and Mk is the k-th Motzkin number.
$L^2$-vanishing theorem and a conjecture of Kollár

Abstract:In 1995, Kollár conjectured that a complex projective $n$-fold $X$ with generically large fundamental group has Euler characteristic $\chi(X, K_X)\geq 0$. In this paper, we confirm the conjecture assuming $X$ has linear fundamental group, i.e., there exists an almost faithful representation $\pi_1(X)\to {\rm GL}_N(\mathbb{C})$. We deduce the conjecture by proving a stronger $L^2$ vanishing theorem: for the universal cover $\widetilde{X}$ of such $X$, its $L^2$-Dolbeaut cohomology $H_{(2)}^{n,q}(\widetilde{X})=0$ for $q\neq 0$. The main ingredients of the proof are techniques from the linear Shafarevich conjecture along with some analytic methods.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{N}$ denote the set of non-negative integers. Haglund, Wilson, and the second author have conjectured that the coefficient of any Schur function $s_\lambda[X]$ in $\Delta_{e_k} e_n[X]$ is a polynomial in $\mathbb{N}[q,t]$. We present four proofs of a stronger statement in the case $k=2$; We show that the coefficient of any Schur function $s_\lambda[X]$ in $\Delta_{e_2} e_n[X]$ has a positive expansion in terms of $q,t$-analogs.

Abstract:In 2014, as part of a larger study of overpartitions with restrictions of the overlined parts based on residue classes, Munagi and Sellers defined $d_2(n)$ as the number of overpartitions of weight $n$ wherein only even parts can be overlined. As part of that work, they used a generating function approach to prove a parity characterization for $d_2(n)$. In this note, we give a combinatorial proof of their result and extend it to a modulus 4 characterization; we provide both generating function and combinatorial proofs of this stronger result. The combinatorial arguments incorporate classical involutions of Franklin, Glaisher, and Sylvester, along with a recent involution of van Leeuwen and methods new with this work.

Abstract:We study the distribution of the size of Selmer groups and TateShafarevich groups arising from a 2-isogeny and its dual 2-isogeny for elliptic curves En : y = x − n. We show that the 2-ranks of these groups all follow the same distribution. The result also implies that the mean value of the 2-rank of the corresponding Tate-Shafarevich groups for square-free positive integers n ≤ X is √ 1 2 log log X as X → ∞. This is quite different from quadratic twists of elliptic curves with full 2-torsion points over Q ([29]), where one Tate-Shafarevich group is almost always trivial while the other is much larger.
