Abstract:In 1995, Kollár conjectured that a complex projective $n$-fold $X$ with generically large fundamental group has Euler characteristic $\chi(X, K_X)\geq 0$. In this paper, we confirm the conjecture assuming $X$ has linear fundamental group, i.e., there exists an almost faithful representation $\pi_1(X)\to {\rm GL}_N(\mathbb{C})$. We deduce the conjecture by proving a stronger $L^2$ vanishing theorem: for the universal cover $\widetilde{X}$ of such $X$, its $L^2$-Dolbeaut cohomology $H_{(2)}^{n,q}(\widetilde{X})=0$ for $q\neq 0$. The main ingredients of the proof are techniques from the linear Shafarevich conjecture along with some analytic methods.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to verify a conjecture of Kollár, that is, for a complex projective manifold \(X\) with a large fundamental group in general, its Euler characteristic \(\chi(X,\mathcal{O}_X)\geqslant0\). Specifically, in 1995 Kollár proposed a conjecture that if the fundamental group of a complex projective manifold \(X\) is large at a general point, then its Euler characteristic \(\chi(X,\mathcal{O}_X)\) should be greater than or equal to 0. This paper confirms this conjecture by assuming that \(X\) has a linear fundamental group, that is, there exists an almost faithful representation \(\pi_1(X)\to GL_n(\mathbb{C})\). To prove this conjecture, the authors introduced a stronger \(L^2\) - vanishing theorem: for the universal cover \(\tilde{X}\) of such \(X\), its \(L^2\)-Dolbeault cohomology group \(H^{p,q}_{(2)}(\tilde{X})\) vanishes when \(q\neq0\). By proving this \(L^2\) - vanishing theorem, they were able to deduce the conclusion of Kollár's conjecture. The main technical tools include the methods of the linear Shafarevich conjecture and some analytical techniques. These tools enable the authors to successfully verify Kollár's conjecture under the assumption that the fundamental group of \(X\) is linear.
