Abstract:A chain poset, by definition, consists of chains of ordered elements in a poset. We study the chain posets associated to two posets: the Boolean algebra and the poset of isotropic flags. We prove that, in both cases, the chain posets satisfy the strong Sperner property and are rank-log concave.

Abstract:We study the coarse classification of partial orderings using chain conditions in the context of descriptive combinatorics. We show that (unlike the Borel counterpart of many other combinatorics), we have a distinct hierarchy of different chain conditions, similar to the classical case.

Abstract:We extend the chain algebra, originally defined in \cite{GN} for finite distributive lattices to that of finite pure posets. We show this algebra corresponds to the Ehrhart ring of a (0,1)-polytope, termed the chain polytope, and characterize the indecomposability of this polytope. Furthermore, we prove the normality of the chain algebra, describe its canonical module, and extend one of main results from \cite{GN} by computing its Krull dimension. For width-2 pure posets, we determine the algebra's regularity and conditions for it to be Gorenstein or nearly Gorenstein.

Abstract:Posets which are retract of products of chains are characterized by means of two properties: \emph{the chain-gap property} and \emph{the selection property} (Rival and Wille, 1981 \cite {R-W}). Examples of posets with the selection property and not the chain-gap property are easy to find. To date, the Boolean lattice $\Power (\omega_1)/Fin$ was the sole example of lattice without the selection property \cite {R-W}. We prove that it does not have the chain-gap property. We provide an example of a lattice which has the chain-gap property but not the selection property. This answer questions raised in \cite {R-W}.

Two classes of posets with real-rooted chain polynomials

Abstract:The coefficients of the chain polynomial of a finite poset enumerate chains in the poset by their number of elements. It has been a challenging open problem to determine which posets have real-rooted chain polynomials. Two new classes of posets, namely those of all rank-selected subposets of Cohen-Macaulay simplicial posets and all noncrossing partition lattices associated to finite Coxeter groups, are shown to have this property. The first result generalizes one of Brenti and Welker. As a special case, the descent enumerator of permutations of the set $\{1, 2,\dots,n\}$ which have ascents at specified positions is shown to be real-rooted, hence log-concave and unimodal, and a good estimate for the location of the peak is deduced.

Abstract:We investigate higher dimensional chain conditions, where the largeness notion is given by Fubini products of a given ideal. From strong saturation properties of an ideal, we derive abstractly versions of higher dimensional $\Delta$-system lemma, which imply many posets, including any finite support iteration of $\sigma$-centered posets and measure algebras, satisfy the higher dimensional chain conditions. We then show that if a poset satisfies a strengthening of the $\sigma$-finite chain condition by Horn and Tarski, then it satisfies higher dimensional chain conditions. As an application, we derive Ramsey-theoretic consequences, namely various partition hypotheses as studied by Bannister, Bergfalk, Moore and Todorcevic, from the existence of ideals satisfying strong chain conditions.

Posets arising from decompositions of objects in a monoidal category

Abstract:Given a symmetric monoidal category $C$ with product $\sqcup$, where the neutral element for the product is an initial object, we consider the poset of $\sqcup$-complemented subobjects of a given object $X$. When this poset has finite height, we define decompositions and partial decompositions of $X$ which are coherent with $\sqcup$, and order them by refinement. From these posets, we define complexes of frames and partial bases, augmented Bergman complexes and related ordered versions. We propose a unified approach to the study of their combinatorics and homotopy type, establishing various properties and relations between them. Via explicit homotopy formulas, we will be able to transfer structural properties, such as Cohen-Macaulayness.

Abstract:Poset-causal systems form a class of decentralized systems introduced by Shah and Parrilo [32] and studied mainly in the context of optimal decentralized control. In this paper we develop part of the realization theory for poset-causal systems. More specifically, we investigate several notions of controllability and observability, and their relation under duality. These new notions extend concepts of controllability and observability in the context of coordinated linear systems [16]. While for coordinated linear systems there is a clear hierarchical structure with a single (main) coordinator, for poset-causal systems there need not be a single coordinator and the communication structure between the decentralized systems allows for more intricate structures, governed by partial orders. On the other hand, we show that the class of poset-causal systems is closed under duality, which is not the case for coordinated linear systems, and that duality relations between the various notions of observability and controllability exist.

Abstract:We prove in a unifying way several equivalent descriptions of Koszul rings, some of which being well known in the literature. Most of them are stated in terms of coring theoretical properties of $\Tor_n^A(R,R)$. As an application of these characterizations we investigate the Koszulity of the incidence rings for finite graded posets. Based on these results, we describe an algorithm to produce new classes of Koszul posets (i.e. graded posets whose incidence rings are Koszul). Specific examples of Koszul posets are included.

Abstract:We show a cotorsion pair cogenerated by a class is complete under suitable conditions in an arbitrary exact category using the generalized small object argument given by Chorny. This recovers Saorín and Šťovíček's criterion of the completeness of cotorsion pairs in their efficient exact categories. Examples in the categories of chain complexes of exact categories are given.

Abstract:In point-free topology, one abstracts the poset of open subsets of a topological space, by replacing it with a frame (a complete lattice, where meet distributes over arbitrary join). In this paper we propose a similar abstraction of the posets of connected subsets in various space-like structures. The analogue of a frame is called a chainmail, which is defined as a poset admitting joins of its mails, i.e., subsets having a lower bound. The main result of the paper is an equivalence between a subcategory of the category of complete join-semilattices and the category of chainmails.

Abstract:Continuous lattices were characterised by Martín Escardó as precisely those objects that are Kan-injective with respect to a certain class of morphisms. In this paper we study Kan-injectivity in general categories enriched in posets. As an example, ω-CPO's are precisely the posets that are Kan-injective with respect to the embeddings ω ↪ ω + 1 and 0 ↪ 1. For every class $\mathcal{H}$ of morphisms, we study the subcategory of all objects that are Kan-injective with respect to $\mathcal{H}$ and all morphisms preserving Kan extensions. For categories such as Top 0 and Pos , we prove that whenever $\mathcal{H}$ is a set of morphisms, the above subcategory is monadic, and the monad it creates is a Kock–Zöberlein monad. However, this does not generalise to proper classes, and we present a class of continuous mappings in Top 0 for which Kan-injectivity does not yield a monadic category.

Abstract:We introduce a construction called realisation which transforms posets into posets. We show that realisations share several key features with upper semilattices. For example, we define local dimensions of points in a poset and show that these numbers for realisations behave in a similar way as they do for upper semilattices. Furthermore, similarly to upper semilattices, realisations have well-behaved discrete approximations which are suitable for capturing homological properties of functors indexed by them. These discretisations are convenient and effective for describing tameness of functors. Homotopical and homological properties of tame functors, particularly those indexed by realisations, are discussed, with emphasis on the use of Koszul complexes to compute Betti diagrams of minimal free resolutions of tame functors indexed by upper semilattices and realisations.

Abstract:Aharoni and Korman (1992) [3] conjectured that every ordered set with no infinite antichains possesses a chain and a partition into antichains so that each part intersects the chain. The conjecture is verified for posets whose incomparability graph is locally finite. It follows that the conjecture is true for (3+1) -free posets with no infinite antichains. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a P4 -free graph to be a cograph. This allows us to obtain a simple proof of the fact that finite P4 -free graphs are finite cographs. We also prove that N -free chain complete posets and N -free posets with no infinite antichains are series-parallel. As a consequence, we obtain that the conjecture is true for N -free posets with no infinite antichain.

Abstract:A monoid $M$ generated by a set $S$ of symbols can be described as the set of equivalence classes of finite words in $S$ under some relations that specify when some contiguous sequence of symbols can be replaced by another. If $a,b\in S$, a relation of the form $ab=ba$ is said to be a \emph{commutation relation}. Words that are equivalent using only a sequence of commutation relations are said to be in the same \emph{commutation class}. We introduce certain partially ordered sets that we call \emph{word posets} that capture the structure of commutation classes in monoids. The isomorphism classes of word posets are seen to be in bijective correspondence with the commutation classes, and we show that the linear extensions of the word poset correspond bijectively to the words in the commutation class, using which we demonstrate that enumerating the words in commutation classes of monoids is #P-complete. We then apply the word posets to Coxeter groups. We show that the problem of enumerating the reduced words of elements of Coxeter groups is #P-complete. We also demonstrate a method for finding the word posets for commutation classes of reduced words of an element, then use this to find a recursive formula for the number of commutation classes of reduced words.

Abstract:We consider a very weak chain condition for a poset, that is the absence of subsets which are order isomorphic to the set of real numbers in their natural ordering; we study generalised radical groups in which this finiteness condition is set on the poset of subgroups which do not have certain properties which are generalizations of normality. This completes many previous results which considered (apparently) stronger chain conditions.
