Abstract:Just as complete lattices can be viewed as the completions of posets, quantales can also be treated as the completions of partially ordered semigroups. Motivated by the study on the well-known Frink completions of posets, it is natural to consider the “Frink” completions for the case of partially ordered semigroups. For this purpose, we firstly introduce the notion of precoherent quantale completions of partially ordered semigroups, and construct the concrete forms of three types of precoherent quantale completions of a partially ordered semigroup. Moreover, we obtain a sufficient and necessary condition of the Frink completion on a partially ordered semigroup being a precoherent quantale completion. Finally, we investigate the injectivity in the category $$\mathbf {APoSgr}_{\le }$$ of algebraic partially ordered semigroups and their submultiplicative directed-supremum-preserving maps, and show that the $$\mathscr {E}_{\le }$$-injective objects of algebraic partially ordered semigroups are precisely the precoherent quantales, here $$\mathscr {E}_{\le }$$ denote the class of morphisms $$h:A\longrightarrow B$$ that preserve the compact elements and satisfy that $$h(a_1)\cdots h(a_n)\le h(b)$$ always implies $$a_1\cdots a_n\le b$$.

Abstract:We show that the theories of partially ordered sets, lattices, semilattices, Boolean algebras, Heyting algebras with a further coarser partial order, or a linearization, or an auxiliary relation have the strong amalgamation property, Fra\"ıssé limits and, in many cases, an $ \omega$-categorical model completion with quantifier elimination. The same applies to Kronheimer and Penrose's causal spaces. On the other hand, Urquhart doubly ordered sets do not have the amalgamation property. Our main tool is the superamalgamation property (the strong amalgamation property is not enough), thus we provide further arguments suggesting the usefulness of the superamalgamation property also in pure model theory, not only in algebraic logic.

Posets arising from decompositions of objects in a monoidal category

Abstract:Given a symmetric monoidal category $C$ with product $\sqcup$, where the neutral element for the product is an initial object, we consider the poset of $\sqcup$-complemented subobjects of a given object $X$. When this poset has finite height, we define decompositions and partial decompositions of $X$ which are coherent with $\sqcup$, and order them by refinement. From these posets, we define complexes of frames and partial bases, augmented Bergman complexes and related ordered versions. We propose a unified approach to the study of their combinatorics and homotopy type, establishing various properties and relations between them. Via explicit homotopy formulas, we will be able to transfer structural properties, such as Cohen-Macaulayness.

Abstract:Recent work of Hopkins establishes that the lattice of order ideals of a minuscule poset satisfies the coincidental down-degree expectations property of Reiner, Tenner, and Yong. His approach appeals to the classification of minuscule posets. A uniform proof is presented herein. The blueprint follows that of Rush and Wang in their uniform proof that various cardinality statistics are homomesic on orbits of order ideals of minuscule posets under the Fon-Der-Flaass action. The underpinning remains the original insight of Rush and Shi into the structure of the isomorphism between the weight lattice of a minuscule representation of a complex simple Lie algebra and the lattice of order ideals of the corresponding minuscule poset.

Uniform Preorders and Partial Combinatory Algebras

Abstract:Uniform preorders are a class of combinatory representations of Set-indexed preorders that generalize Pieter Hofstra's basic relational objects. An indexed preorder is representable by a uniform preorder if and only if it has as generic predicate. We study the $\exists$-completion of indexed preorders on the level of uniform preorders, and identify a combinatory condition (called 'relational completeness') which characterizes those uniform preorders with finite meets whose $\exists$-completions are triposes. The class of triposes obtained this way contains relative realizability triposes, for which we derive a characterization as a fibrational analogue of the characterization of realizability toposes given in earlier work.

Local symmetries in partially ordered sets

Abstract:Partially ordered sets (posets) have a universal appearance as an abstract structure in many areas of mathematics. Though, even their explicit enumeration remains unknown in general, and only the counts of all partial orders on sets of up to 16 unlabelled elements have been calculated to date, see sequence A000112 in the OEIS. In this work, we study automorphisms of posets in order to formulate a classification by local symmetries. These symmetries give rise to a division operation on the set of all posets and lead us to the construction of symmetry classes that are easier to characterise and enumerate. Additionally to the enumeration of symmetry classes, I derive polynomial expressions that count certain subsets of posets with a large number of layers (a large height). As an application in physics, I investigate local symmetries (or rather their lack of) in causal sets, which are discrete spacetime models used as a candidate framework for quantum gravity.

Abstract:We consider the functor C that to a unital C*-algebra A assigns the partial order set C(A) of its commutative C*-subalgebras ordered by inclusion. We investigate how some C*-algebraic properties translate under the action of C to order-theoretical properties. In particular, we show that A is finite dimensional if and only C(A) satisfies certain chain conditions. We eventually show that if A and B are C*-algebras such that A is finite dimensional and C(A) and C(B) are order isomorphic, then A and B must be *-isomorphic.

Partial actions of inverse categories and their algebras

Abstract:In this work we introduce partial and global actions of inverse categories on posets in two variants, fibred actions and actions by symmetries. We study in detail actions of an inverse category $\mathcal{C}$ on specific subposets of the poset of finite subsets of $\mathcal{C}$, the Bernoulli actions. We show that to each fibred action of an inverse category on a poset there corresponds another inverse category, the semidirect product associated to the action. The Bernoulli actions give rise to the Szendrei expansions of $\mathcal{C}$, which define a endofunctor of the category of inverse categories. We extend the concept of enlargement from inverse semigroup theory to, and we show that if $\mathcal{D}$ is an enlargement of $\mathcal{C}$ then their Cauchy completions are equivalent categories; in particular, some pairs corresponding to partial and global Bernoulli actions are enlargements. We conclude by studying convolution algebras of finite inverse categories and showing that if $\mathcal{D}$ is an enlargement of $\mathcal{C}$ then their convolution algebras are Morita equivalent. Furthermore, using Kan extensions we also analyze the infinite case.

Abstract:In the present paper a new concept of representability is introduced, which can be applied to not total and also to intransitive relations (semiorders in particular). This idea tries to represent the orderings in the simplest manner, avoiding any unnecessary information. For this purpose, the new concept of representability is developed by means of partial functions, so that other common definitions of representability (i.e. (Richter-Peleg) multi-utility, Scott-Suppes representability,...) are now particular cases in which the partial functions are actually functions. The paper also presents a collection of examples and propositions showing the advantages of this kind of representations, particularly in the case of partial orders and semiorders, as well as some results showing the connections between distinct kinds of representations.

Abstract:The classical way to study a finite poset (X, ≤ ) using topology is by means of the simplicial complex ΔX of its nonempty chains. There is also an alternative approach, regarding X as a finite topological space. In this article we introduce new constructions for studying X topologically: inspired by a classical paper of Dowker (Ann Math 56:84–95, 1952), we define the simplicial complexes KX and LX associated to the relation ≤. In many cases these polyhedra have the same homotopy type as the order complex ΔX. We give a complete characterization of the simplicial complexes that are the K or L-complexes of some finite poset and prove that KX and LX are topologically equivalent to the smaller complexes K′X, L′X induced by the relation <. More precisely, we prove that KX (resp. LX) simplicially collapses to K′X (resp. L′X). The paper concludes with a result that relates the K-complexes of two posets X, Y with closed relations R ⊂ X × Y.

Abstract:We introduce a new partial order on the set of all antichains of a fixed size in a given poset. When applied to minuscule posets, these partial orders give rise to distributive lattices that appear in the branching rules for minuscule representations of simply laced complex simple Lie algebras.

Abstract:The lim-inf convergence in a complete lattice was introduced by Scott to characterize continuous lattices. Here we introduce and study the lim-inf convergence in a partially ordered set. The main result is that for a poset P the lim-inf convergence is topological if and only if P is a continuous poset. A weaker form of lim-inf convergence in posets is also discussed.

Abstract:We show that the category of partial comodules over a Hopf algebra H is comonadic over Vect k and provide an explicit construction of this comonad using topological vector spaces. The case when H is finite-dimensional is treated in detail. A study of partial representations of linear algebraic groups is initiated; we show that a connected linear algebraic group does not admit partiality.

Modest Sets are Equivalent to PERs

Abstract:The aim of this article is to give an expository account of the equivalence between modest sets and partial equivalence relations. Our proof is entirely self-contained in that we do not assume any knowledge of categorical realizability. At the heart of the equivalence lies the subquotient construction on a partial equivalence relation. The subquotient construction embeds the category of partial equivalence relations into the category of modest sets. We show that this embedding is a split essentially surjective functor, and thereby, an equivalence of categories. Our development is both constructive and predicative, and employs the language of homotopy type theory. All the mathematics presented in this article has been mechanised in Cubical Agda.

Abstract:Effect algebras are certain ordered structures that serve as a general framework for studying the algebraic semantics of quantum logic. We study effect algebras which obtain suprema of countable monotone sequences – so-called -effect algebras. This assumption is necessary to capture basic (non-discrete) probabilistic concepts. We establish a free -completion of effect algebras (i.e., a left adjoint to the functor that forgets the existence of -suprema) and the existence of a tensor product in the category of -effect algebras. These results are obtained by means of so-called test spaces. Test spaces form a category that contains effect algebras as a reflective subcategory, but provides more space for constructions.

A survey of congruences and quotients of partially ordered sets

Abstract:A quotient of a poset $P$ is a partial order obtained on the equivalence classes of an equivalence relation $\theta$ on $P$; $\theta$ is then called a congruence if it satisfies certain conditions, which vary according to different theories. The literature on congruences and quotients of partially ordered sets contains a large and profilerating array of approaches, but little in the way of systematic exposition and examination of the subject. We seek to rectify this by surveying the different theories in the literature and providing philosophical discussion on requirements for notions of congruences of posets. We advocate a pluralist approach which recognises that different types of congruence arise naturally in different mathematical situations. There are some notions of congruence which are very general, whilst others capture specific structure which often appears in examples. Indeed, we finish by giving several examples where quotients of posets appear naturally in mathematics.
