Abstract:Steady-state response of an isolated horizontal axis wind turbine blade undergoing out-of-plane and in-plane vibrations are studied considering the two cases separately. Equations of motion for both cases are sought by modeling the blade as cantilevered Euler-Bernoulli beam and applying the Lagrangian formulation. Taking into account the effects of blade rotation on gravitational and aerodynamic forces and allowing the blade to undergo large deformations, various nonlinearities arise in the system resulting in superharmonic resonances. Taking practically relevant numerical values of parameters, we suitably order the parameters for their smallness. We then obtain the frequency responses corresponding to primary and superharmonic resonances by applying the method of multiple scales up to fourth and third orders for out-of-plane and in-plane cases respectively. Comparisons are drawn with the results obtained using the method of harmonic balance.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to study the steady - state responses of in - plane and out - of - plane vibrations of horizontal - axis wind turbine blades. Specifically, the paper focuses on: 1. **Model Establishment**: By modeling the blade as a cantilever beam and applying the Lagrange formula, the equations of motion for in - plane and out - of - plane vibrations of the blade are derived. The effects of blade rotation on gravitational and aerodynamic forces, as well as the large deformations that the blade may experience, are considered. These factors lead to nonlinear effects in the system, resulting in super - harmonic resonances. 2. **Analysis Method**: The paper uses the Multiple Scales Method for frequency - response analysis, conducting third - order and fourth - order analyses for out - of - plane and in - plane vibrations respectively. In addition, the Harmonic Balance Method is also used for comparison. 3. **Numerical Results**: By selecting practically relevant parameter values, the frequency responses of the main and super - harmonic resonances are calculated and compared with the results of the Harmonic Balance Method to verify the effectiveness and accuracy of the Multiple Scales Method. ### Specific Problem Analysis #### Out - of - plane Vibrations - **System Description**: The blade is modeled as an Euler - Bernoulli beam, fixed at one end. Only the out - of - plane vibrations of the first bending mode are considered, and higher - order modes and vibrations in other directions are ignored. - **Lagrange Equation**: The equation of motion is derived through the Lagrange formula, considering factors such as gravity, centrifugal stiffening, and geometric nonlinearity. - **Frequency Response**: The frequency responses are solved using the Multiple Scales Method and the Harmonic Balance Method respectively and then compared. #### In - plane Vibrations - **System Description**: Similarly, the blade is modeled as a cantilever beam, but the in - plane vibrations are considered. Gravity is considered not only as a parametric excitation but also as part of the external periodic loading. - **Lagrange Equation**: The equation of motion including aerodynamic loads, damping terms, and inertial forces is derived. - **Frequency Response**: The frequency - response analysis is also carried out using the Multiple Scales Method and the Harmonic Balance Method respectively and then compared. ### Key Formulas - **Equation of Motion for Out - of - plane Vibrations**: \[ \rho A(4\alpha_1 z_l^2+\alpha_3)\ddot{z}_l + c_l\dot{z}_l+(4\alpha_1\rho A\dot{z}_l^2 + 2\rho A\Omega^2(\alpha_2-\alpha_1 z_l^2)+EI\beta_4 - 2g\rho\beta_5 A\sin(\Omega t))z_l=Q_c+\Delta Q\sin(\Omega t) \] - **Equation of Motion for In - plane Vibrations**: \[ \rho A(4\alpha_1 q^2+\alpha_3)\ddot{q}+(c_\xi\alpha_3 - Q_d\Omega)\dot{q}- 2\rho\alpha_1 A(\Omega^2 q^2 - 2\dot{q}^2)q+4c_\xi\alpha_1\dot{q}q^2 + c_\xi\alpha_4\Omega q^2+(EI\beta_1+\rho A((2\alpha_2-\alpha_3)\Omega^2 - 2g\beta_2\sin(\Omega t)))q=-g\rho\beta_3 A\cos(\Omega t)-c_\xi\alpha_5\Omega+Q_a \] ### Conclusion The paper, through the study of horizontal...
