Abstract:In this article we first show that any finite cover of the moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $g\geq 2$ does not admit any Riemannian metric $ds^2$ of nonnegative scalar curvature such that $ds^2 \succ ds_{T}^2$ where $ds_{T}^2$ is the Teichm\"uller metric. Our second result is the proof that any cover $M$ of the moduli space $\mathbb{M}_{g}$ of a closed Riemann surface $S_{g}$ does not admit any complete Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature in the quasi-isometry class of the Teichm\"uller metric, which implies a conjecture of Farb-Weinberger.

Abstract:The contribution of this paper is two-fold. The first one is to derive a simple formula of the mean curvature form for a hypersurface in the Randers space with a Killing field, by considering the Busemann-Hausdorff measure and Holmes-Thompson measure simultaneously. The second one is to obtain the explicit local expressions of two types of nontrivial rotational BH-minimal surfaces in a Randers domain of constant flag curvature K=-1, which are the first examples of BH-minimal surfaces in the hyperbolic Randers space.

Additionally, we demonstrate that the minimal surface entropy attains the minimum value if and only if the metric is hyperbolic.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider immersed two-sided minimal hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with finite total curvature. We prove that the sum of the Morse index and the nullity of the Jacobi operator is bounded from below by a linear function of the number of ends and the first Betti number of the hypersurface. When $n=4$, we are able to drop the nullity term by a careful study for the rigidity case. Our result is the first effective generalization of Li-Wang. Using our index estimates and ideas from the recent work of Chodosh-Ketover-Maximo, we prove compactness and finiteness results of minimal hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^4$ with finite index.

Abstract:Abstract We prove that for an embedded unstable one-sided minimal hypersurface of the $(n+1)$-dimensional real projective space, the Morse index is at least $n+2$, and this bound is attained by the cubic isoparametric minimal hypersurfaces. We also show that there exist closed embedded two-sided minimal surfaces in the 3-dimensional real projective space of each odd index by computing the index of the Lawson surfaces.

Abstract:We show that the combination of non-negative sectional curvature (or $2$-intermediate Ricci curvature) and strict positivity of scalar curvature forces rigidity of complete (non-compact) two-sided stable minimal hypersurfaces in a $4$-manifold with bounded curvature. In particular, this implies the nonexistence of complete two-sided stable minimal hypersurface in a closed $4$-manifold with positive sectional curvature. Our work leads to new comparison results. We also construct various examples showing rigidity of stable minimal hypersurfaces can fail under other curvature conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a connected orientable closed Riemannian manifold $M^{n+1}$ with positive Ricci curvature. Suppose $G$ is a compact Lie group acting by isometries on $M$ with $3\leq {\rm codim}(G\cdot p)\leq 7$ for all $p\in M$. Then we show the equivariant min-max $G$-hypersurface $\Sigma$ corresponding to the fundamental class $[M]$ is a multiplicity one minimal $G$-hypersurface with a $G$-invariant unit normal and $G$-equivariant index one. As an application, we are able to establish a genus bound for $\Sigma$, a control on the singular points of $\Sigma/G$, and an upper bound for the (first) $G$-width of $M$ provided $n+1=3$ and the actions of $G$ are orientation preserving.

Abstract:Ever since geometry was developed in ancient times, lines of shortest length have always been used in studying global problems. In this century the work of Bonnet, Cartan, Hadamard, Cohn-Vossen, Busemann, Synge, Rauch, Klingenberg, Berger, Bott, Penrose, Hawking, Cheeger, Gromoll, Meyer, Gromov and others demonstrates how the properties of geodesics can be used to study the global topological structure of manifolds with suitable assumptions on the curvature. Most of this work depends on the study of the variational properties of the length of the geodesics that were involved in the problem. Usually the existence of the extremal geodesics is not difficult to prove. The role of the curvature appears in the second variational formula. Since a geodesic is one-dimensional, one needs to know the information of the curvature tensor along the two-dimensional planes which are tangential to the geodesic. As a result, one usually makes assumptions on the sectional curvature and the Ricci curvature of the manifold. If one wants to study parts of the curvature tensor which are much weaker than the Ricci curvature and the sectional curvature, geodesics do not seem to be adequate, and extremal objects of higher dimension are natural tools. A natural scalar invariant of the curvature tensor is the scalar curvature. The scalar curvature turns out to play an important role in general relativity also.Lichnerowicz [5] was the first person to find a topological obstruction to the existence of metrics with positive scalar curvature. He proved, via the index theorem of Atiyah and Singer, that such metrics do not exist on compact spin manifolds with non-zero^ 4 …
Minimal surfaces with low genus in lens spaces

Abstract:Given a Riemannian $\mathbb{RP}^3$ with a bumpy metric or a metric of positive Ricci curvature, we show that there either exist four distinct minimal real projective planes, or exist one minimal real projective plane together with two distinct minimal $2$-spheres. Our proof is based on a variant multiplicity one theorem for the Simon-Smith min-max theory under certain equivariant settings. In particular, we show under the positive Ricci assumption that $\mathbb{RP}^3$ contains at least four distinct minimal real projective planes and four distinct minimal tori. Additionally, the number of minimal tori can be improved to five for a generic positive Ricci metric on $\mathbb{RP}^3$ by the degree method. Moreover, using the same strategy, we show that in the lens space $L(4m,2m\pm 1)$, $m\geq 1$, with a bumpy metric or a metric of positive Ricci curvature, there either exist $N(m)$ numbers of distinct minimal Klein bottles, or exist one minimal Klein bottle and three distinct minimal $2$-spheres, where $N(1)=4$, $N(m)=2$ for $m\geq 2$, and the first case happens under the positive Ricci assumption.

Abstract:In this note, we continue the investigation of a projective Kähler manifold M of semi-negative holomorphic sectional curvature H. We introduce a new differential geometric numerical rank invariant which measures the number of linearly independent truly flat directions of H in the tangent spaces. We prove that this invariant is bounded above by the nef dimension and bounded below by the numerical Kodaira dimension of M. We also prove a splitting theorem for M in terms of the nef dimension and, under some additional hypotheses, in terms of the new rank invariant.

Abstract:Given I , B ∈ N ∪ { 0 } , we investigate the existence and geometry of complete finitely branched minimal surfaces M in R 3 with Morse index at most I and total branching order at most B. Previous works of Fischer-Colbrie ("On complete minimal surfaces with finite Morse index in 3-manifolds," Invent. Math., vol. 82, pp. 121–132, 1985) and Ros ("One-sided complete stable minimal surfaces," J. Differ. Geom., vol. 74, pp. 69–92, 2006) explain that such surfaces are precisely the complete minimal surfaces in R 3 of finite total curvature and finite total branching order. Among other things, we derive scale-invariant weak chord-arc type results for such an M with estimates that are given in terms of I and B. In order to obtain some of our main results for these special surfaces, we obtain general intrinsic monotonicity of area formulas for m-dimensional submanifolds Σ of an n-dimensional Riemannian manifold X, where these area estimates depend on the geometry of X and upper bounds on the lengths of the mean curvature vectors of Σ. We also describe a family of complete, finitely branched minimal surfaces in R 3 that are stable and non-orientable; these examples generalize the classical Henneberg minimal surface.
