Abstract:A tiling of the unit square is an MTP tiling if the smallest tile can tile all the other tiles. We look at the function $f(n)=\max \sum s_i$, where $s_i$ is the side length of the $i$th tile and the sum is taken over all MTP tilings with $n$ tiles. If $n=k^2+3$, it was conjectured that $f(k^2+3)=k+1/k$. We show that any tiling that violates the conjecture must consist of at least three tile sizes and has exactly one minimal tile.

On the minimal period of integer tilings

Abstract:If a finite set $A$ tiles the integers by translations, it also admits a tiling whose period $M$ has the same prime factors as $|A|$. We prove that the minimal period of such a tiling is bounded by $\exp(c(\log D)^2/\log\log D)$, where $D$ is the diameter of $A$. In the converse direction, given $\epsilon>0$, we construct tilings whose minimal period has the same prime factors as $|A|$ and is bounded from below by $D^{3/2-\epsilon}$. We also discuss the relationship between minimal tiling period estimates and the Coven-Meyerowitz conjecture.

Abstract:We look at sets of tiles that can tile any region of size greater than 1 on the square grid. This is not the typical tiling question, but relates closely to it and therefore can help solve other tiling problems -- we give an example of this. We also present a result to a more classic tiling question with dominoes and L-shape tiles.

Abstract:We study periodic tessellations of the Euclidean space with unequal cells arising from the minimization of perimeter functionals. Existence results and qualitative properties of minimizers are discussed for different classes of problems, involving local and non-local perimeters. Regularity is then addressed in the general case under volume penalization, and in the planar case with the standard perimeter, prescribing the volumes of each cell. Finally, we show the optimality of hexagonal tilings among partitions with almost equal areas.

Abstract:We give a constructive method that can decrease the number of prototiles needed to tile a space. We achieve this by exchanging edge to edge matching rules for a small atlas of permitted patches. This method is illustrated with Wang tiles, and we apply our method to present via these rules a single prototile that can only tile $R^3$ aperiodically, and a pair of square tiles that can only tile $R^2$ aperiodically.

Abstract:Let $ABC$ be an equilateral triangle. For certain triangles $T$ (the "tile") and certain $N$, it is possible to cut $ABC$ into $N$ copies of $T$. It is known that only certain shapes of $T$ are possible, but until now very little was known about the possible values of $N$. Here we prove that for $N>3$, $N$ cannot be prime, and study more closely the possible tilings when the tile has a $\pi/3$ angle.

Abstract:An N-tiling of triangle ABC by triangle T is a way of writing ABC as a union of N triangles congruent to T, overlapping only at their boundaries. The triangle T is the "tile". The tile may or may not be similar to ABC. In this paper we study the case of isosceles (but not equilateral) ABC. We study three possible forms of the tile: right-angled, or with one angle double another, or with a 120 degree angle. In the case of a right-angled tile, we give a complete characterization of the tilings, and prove that N must be even. In the latter two cases we prove the ratios of the sides of the tile are rational, and give a necessary condition for the existence of an N-tiling. For the case when the tile has one angle double another, we prove N cannot be prime or even squarefree.

An aperiodic tiling made of one tile, a triangle

Abstract:How many different tiles are needed at the minimum to create aperiodicity? Several tilings made of two tiles were discovered, the first one being by Penrose in the seventies. Since then, scientists discovered other aperiodic tilings made of two tiles, including the square-triangle one, a tiling that has been particularly useful for the study of dodecagonal quasicrystals and soft matters. An open problem still exists: Can one tile be sufficient to create aperiodicity? This is known as the ein stein problem. We present in this paper an aperiodic tiling made of one single tile: an isosceles right triangle. The tile itself is not aperiodic and therefore not a solution to the ein stein problem but we present a set of substitution rules on the same tile that forces the tiling to be aperiodic. This paper presents its construction rules that proves its aperiodicity. We also show that this tiling offers an underlying dodecagonal structure close to the one of square-triangle tiling.

Abstract:Coven and Meyerowitz formulated two conditions which have since been conjectured to characterize all finite sets that tile the integers by translation. By periodicity, this conjecture is reduced to sets which tile a finite cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}_M$. In this paper we consider a natural relaxation of this problem, where we replace sets with nonnegative functions $f,g$, such that $f(0)=g(0)=1$, $f\ast g=\mathbf{1}_{\mathbb{Z}_M}$ is a functional tiling, and $f, g$ satisfy certain further natural properties associated with tilings. We show that the Coven-Meyerowitz tiling conditions do not necessarily hold in such generality. Such examples of functional tilings carry the potential to lead to proper tiling counterexamples to the Coven-Meyerowitz conjecture in the future.

Abstract:An algorithm is provided to tile the plane with the aperiodic monotile Tile(1,1) recently discovered by Smith et al. (2023). Their geometric construction guidelines are expanded into a numerical MATLAB algorithm. The intention is to remove a possible obstacle for researchers interested in applications of this fundamental tiling of the plane.

Given graphs [math] and [math], a perfect [math]-tiling in [math] is a collection of vertex-disjoint copies of [math] in [math] that together cover all the vertices in [math]. The study of the minimum degree threshold forcing a perfect [math]-tiling in a graph [math] has a long history, culminating in the Kühn–Osthus theorem [D. Kühn and D. Osthus, Combinatorica, 29 (2009), pp. 65–107] which resolves this problem, up to an additive constant, for all graphs [math]. In this paper we initiate the study of the analogous question for edge-ordered graphs. In particular, we characterize for which edge-ordered graphs [math] this problem is well-defined. We also apply the absorbing method to asymptotically determine the minimum degree threshold for forcing a perfect [math]-tiling in an edge-ordered graph, where [math] is any fixed monotone path.

Abstract:In this paper we explore the power of tile self-assembly models that extend the well-studied abstract Tile Assembly Model (aTAM) by permitting tiles of shapes beyond unit squares. Our main result shows the surprising fact that any aTAM system, consisting of many different tile types, can be simulated by a single tile type of a general shape. As a consequence, we obtain a single universal tile type of a single (constant-size) shape that serves as a "universal tile machine": the single universal tile type can simulate any desired aTAM system when given a single seed assembly that encodes the desired aTAM system. We also show how to adapt this result to convert any of a variety of plane tiling systems (such as Wang tiles) into a "nearly" plane tiling system with a single tile (but with small gaps between the tiles). All of these results rely on the ability to both rotate and translate tiles; by contrast, we show that a single nonrotatable tile, of arbitrary shape, can produce assemblies which either grow infinitely or cannot grow at all, implying drastically limited computational power. On the positive side, we show how to simulate arbitrary cellular automata for a limited number of steps using a single nonrotatable tile and a linear-size seed assembly.

Abstract:Abstract Komlós [Komlós: Tiling Turán Theorems, Combinatorica, 2000] determined the asymptotically optimal minimum‐degree condition for covering a given proportion of vertices of a host graph by vertex‐disjoint copies of a fixed graph H , thus essentially extending the Hajnal–Szemerédi theorem that deals with the case when H is a clique. We give a proof of a graphon version of Komlós's theorem. To prove this graphon version, and also to deduce from it the original statement about finite graphs, we use the machinery introduced in [Hladký, Hu, Piguet: Tilings in graphons, arXiv:1606.03113]. We further prove a stability version of Komlós's theorem.

Abstract:Communications in Contemporary Mathematics, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we prove the existence of periodic tessellations of [math] minimizing a general nonlocal perimeter functional, defined as the interaction between a set and its complement through a nonnegative kernel, which we assume to be either integrable at the origin, or singular, with a fractional type singularity. We reformulate the optimal partition problem as an isoperimetric problem among fundamental domains associated with discrete subgroups of [math][math], and we provide the existence of a solution by using suitable concentrated compactness type arguments and compactness results for lattices. Finally, we discuss the possible optimality of the hexagonal tessellation in the planar case.

Abstract:Wang tiles enable efficient pattern compression while avoiding the periodicity in tile distribution via programmable matching rules. However, most research in Wang tilings has considered tiling the infinite plane. Motivated by emerging applications in materials engineering, we consider the bounded version of the tiling problem and offer four integer programming formulations to construct valid or nearly-valid Wang tilings: a decision, maximum-rectangular tiling, maximum cover, and maximum adjacency constraint satisfaction formulations. To facilitate a finer control over the resulting tilings, we extend these programs with tile-based, color-based, packing, and variable-sized periodic constraints. Furthermore, we introduce an efficient heuristic algorithm for the maximum-cover variant based on the shortest path search in directed acyclic graphs and derive simple modifications to provide a $1/2$ approximation guarantee for arbitrary tile sets, and a $2/3$ guarantee for tile sets with cyclic transducers. Finally, we benchmark the performance of the integer programming formulations and of the heuristic algorithms showing that the heuristics provides very competitive outputs in a fraction of time. As a by-product, we reveal errors in two well-known aperiodic tile sets: the Knuth tile set contains a tile unusable in two-way infinite tilings, and the Lagae corner tile set is not aperiodic.

Abstract:This study explores the properties of the function which can tile the field $\mathbb{Q}_p$ of $p$-adic numbers by translation. It is established that functions capable of tiling $\mathbb{Q}_p$ is by translation uniformly locally constancy. As an application, in the field $\mathbb{Q}_p$, we addressed the question posed by H. Leptin and D. Müller, providing the necessary and sufficient conditions for a discrete set to correspond to a uniform partition of unity. The study also connects these tiling properties to the Fuglede conjecture, which states that a measurable set is a tile if and only if it is spectral. The paper concludes by characterizing the structure of tiles in $\mathbb{Q}_p \times \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$, proving that they are spectral sets.
