Abstract:We provide an effective characterization of the planar octagonal tilings which admit weak local rules. As a corollary, we show that they are all based on quadratic irrationalities, as conjectured by Thang Le in the 1990s.

Abstract:A tiling is said to have infinite local complexity (ILC) if it contains infinitely many two-tile patches up to rigid motions. In this work, we provide examples of substitution rules that generate tilings with ILC. The proof relies on Danzer's algorithm, which assumes that the substitution factor is non-Pisot. In addition to ILC, the tiling space of each substitution rule contains a tiling that exhibits global n-fold rotational symmetry, n=13,17,21.

Abstract:We study tilings of polygons $R$ with arbitrary convex polygonal tiles. Such tilings come in continuous families obtained by moving tile edges parallel to themselves (keeping edge directions fixed). We study how the tile shapes and areas change in these families. In particular we show that if $R$ is convex, the tile shapes can be arbitrarily prescribed (up to homothety). We also show that the tile areas and tile ``orientations'' determine the tiling. We associate to a tiling an underlying bipartite planar graph $G$ and its corresponding Kasteleyn matrix $K$. If $G$ has quadrilateral faces, we show that $K$ is the differential of the map from edge intercepts to tile areas, and extract some geometric and probabilistic consequences.

Abstract:We study a family of substitution tilings with similar right triangles of two sizes which is obtained using the substitution rule introduced in [Danzer, L. and van Ophuysen, G. A species of planar triangular tilings with inflation factor $\sqrt{-\tau}$. Res. Bull. Panjab Univ. Sci. 2000, 50, 1-4, pp. 137--175 (2001)]. In that paper, it is proved this family of tilings can be obtained from a local rule using decorated tiles. That is, that this family is \emph{sofic}. In the present paper, we provide an alternative proof of this fact. We use more decorated tiles than Danzer and van Ophuysen (22 in place of 10). However, our decoration of supertiles is more intuitive and our local rule is simpler.

Abstract:We study decision problems on geometric tilings. First, we study a variant of the Domino problem where square tiles are replaced by geometric tiles of arbitrary shape. We show that, under some weak assumptions, this variant is undecidable regardless of the shapes, extending previous results on rhombus tiles. This result holds even when the geometric tiling is forced to belong to a fixed set.Second, we consider the problem of deciding whether a geometric subshift has finite local complexity, which is a common assumption when studying geometric tilings. We show that it is undecidable even in a simple setting (square shapes with small modifications).

Abstract:We study the intimate relationship between the Penrose and the Taylor-Socolar tilings, within both the context of double hexagon tiles and the algebraic context of hierarchical inverse sequences of triangular lattices. This unified approach produces both types of tilings together, clarifies their relationship, and offers straightforward proofs of their basic properties.

Abstract:It is a classical result that there are $12$ (irreducible) rational cubic curves through $8$ generic points in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^2$, but little is known about the non-generic cases. The space of $8$-point configurations is partitioned into strata depending on combinatorial objects we call quatroids, a higher-order version of representable matroids. We compute all $779777$ quatroids on eight distinct points in the plane, which produces a full description of the stratification. For each stratum, we generate several invariants, including the number of rational cubics through a generic configuration. As a byproduct of our investigation, we obtain a collection of results regarding the base loci of pencils of cubics and positive certificates for non-rationality.

Elliptically Distributed Lozenge Tilings of a Hexagon

Abstract:We present a detailed study of a four parameter family of elliptic weights on tilings of a hexagon introduced by Borodin, Gorin and Rains, generalizing some of their results. In the process, we connect the combinatorics of the model with the theory of elliptic special functions. Using canonical coordinates for the hexagon we show how the $n$-point distribution function and transitional probabilities connect to the theory of $BC_n$-symmetric multivariate elliptic special functions and of elliptic difference operators introduced by Rains. In particular, the difference operators intrinsically capture all of the combinatorics. Based on quasi-commutation relations between the elliptic difference operators, we construct certain natural measure-preserving Markov chains on such tilings which we immediately use to obtain an exact sampling algorithm for these elliptic distributions. We present some simulated random samples exhibiting interesting and probably new arctic boundary phenomena. Finally, we show that the particle process associated to such tilings is determinantal with correlation kernel given in terms of the univariate elliptic biorthogonal functions of Spiridonov and Zhedanov.

Lattice tilings minimizing nonlocal perimeters

Abstract:We prove the existence of periodic tessellations of $\mathbb{R}^N$ minimizing a general nonlocal perimeter functional, defined as the interaction between a set and its complement through a nonnegative kernel, which we assume to be either integrable at the origin, or singular, with a fractional type singularity. We reformulate the optimal partition problem as an isoperimetric problem among fundamental domains associated with discrete subgroups of $\mathbb{R}^N$ , and we provide the existence of a solution by using suitable concentrated compactness type arguments and compactness results for lattices. Finally, we discuss the possible optimality of the hexagonal tessellation in the planar case.

Abstract:We study $k$-tilings ($k$-tuples of domino tilings) of the Aztec diamond of rank $m$. We assign a weight to each $k$-tiling, depending on the number of dominos of certain types and the number of "interactions" between the tilings. Employing the colored vertex models introduced in earlier work to study supersymmetric LLT polynomials, we compute the generating polynomials of the $k$-tilings. We then prove some combinatorial results about $k$-tilings, including a bijection between $k$-tilings with no interactions and $1$-tilings, and we compute the arctic curves of the tilings for $t=0$ and $t\rightarrow\infty$. We also present some lozenge $k$-tilings of the hexagon and compute the arctic curves of the tilings for $t=0$.

Abstract:A positive integer $n$ is called a tiling number if the equilateral triangle can be dissected into $nk^2$ congruent triangles for some integer $k$. An integer $n>3$ is tiling number if and only if at least one of the elliptic curves $E^{(\pm n)}:\pm ny^2=x(x-1)(x+3)$ has positive Mordell-Weil rank. Let $A$ denote one of the two curves. In this paper, using Waldspurger formula and an induction method, for $n\equiv 3,7\mod 24$ positive square-free, as well as some other residue classes, we express the parity of analytic Sha of $A$ in terms of the genus number $g(m):=\#2\mathrm{Cl}(\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-m}))$ as $m$ runs over factors of $n$. Together with $2$-descent method which express $\mathrm{dim}_{\mathbb{F}_2}\mathrm{Sel}_2(A/\mathbb{Q})/A[2]$ in terms of the corank of a matrix of $\mathbb{F}_2$-coefficients, we show that for $n\equiv 3,7\mod 24$ positive square-free, the analytic Sha of $A$ being odd is equivalent to that $\mathrm{Sel}_2(A/\mathbb{Q})/A[2]$ being trivial, as predicted by the BSD conjecture.

Abstract:An N-tiling of triangle ABC by triangle T is a way of writing ABC as a union of N triangles congruent to T, overlapping only at their boundaries. The triangle T is the "tile". The tile may or may not be similar to ABC. In this paper we study the case of isosceles (but not equilateral) ABC. We study three possible forms of the tile: right-angled, or with one angle double another, or with a 120 degree angle. In the case of a right-angled tile, we give a complete characterization of the tilings, and prove that N must be even. In the latter two cases we prove the ratios of the sides of the tile are rational, and give a necessary condition for the existence of an N-tiling. For the case when the tile has one angle double another, we prove N cannot be prime or even squarefree.

Abstract:Keller's conjecture on cube tilings asserted that, in any tiling of $\mathbb{R}^d$ by unit cubes, there must exist two cubes that share a $(d-1)$-dimensional face. This is now known to be true in dimensions $d\leq 7$ and false for $d\geq 8$. In this article, we investigate analogues of Keller's conjecture for integer tilings.

Abstract:The periodic tiling conjecture asserts that if a region $\Sigma\subset \mathbb R^d$ tiles $\mathbb R^d$ by translations then it admits at least one fully periodic tiling. This conjecture is known to hold in $\mathbb R$, and recently it was disproved in sufficiently high dimensions. In this paper, we study the periodic tiling conjecture for polygonal sets: bounded open sets in $\mathbb R^2$ whose boundary is a finite union of line segments. We prove the periodic tiling conjecture for any polygonal tile whose vertices are rational. As a corollary of our argument, we also obtain the decidability of tilings by rational polygonal sets. Moreover, we prove that any translational tiling by a rational polygonal tile is weakly-periodic, i.e., can be partitioned into finitely many singly-periodic pieces.

Abstract:Exploring nonminimal-rank quasicrystals, which have symmetries that can be found in both periodic and aperiodic crystals, often provides new insight into the physical nature of aperiodic long-range order in models that are easier to treat. Motivated by the prevalence of experimental systems exhibiting aperiodic long-range order with hexagonal and trigonal symmetry, we introduce a generic two-parameter family of 2-dimensional quasiperiodic tilings with such symmetries. We focus on the special case of trigonal and hexagonal Fibonacci, or golden-mean, tilings, analogous to the well studied square Fibonacci tiling. We first generate the tilings using a generalized version of de Bruijn's dual grid method. We then discuss their interpretation in terms of projections of a hypercubic lattice from six dimensional superspace. We conclude by concentrating on two of the hexagonal members of the family, and examining a few of their properties more closely, while providing a set of substitution rules for their generation.

Abstract:We classify edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by congruent pentagons with the edge combination $a^4b$ and with any irrational angle in degree: they are three $1$-parameter families of pentagonal subdivisions of the Platonic solids, with $12, 24$ and $60$ tiles; and a sequence of $1$-parameter families of pentagons admitting non-symmetric $3$-layer earth map tilings together with their various rearrangements under extra conditions. Their parameter moduli and geometric data are all computed in both exact and numerical form. The total numbers of different tilings for any fixed such pentagon are counted explicitly. As a byproduct, the degenerate pentagons produce naturally many new non-edge-to-edge quadrilateral tilings. A sequel of this paper will handle $a^4b$-pentagons with all angles being rational in degree by solving some trigonometric Diophantine equations, to complete our full classification of edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by congruent pentagons.

Abstract:We investigate a new family of regions that is the universal generalization of three well-known region families in the field of enumeration of tilings: the quasi-regular hexagons, the semi-hexagons, and the halved hexagons. We prove a simple product formula for the number of tilings of these new regions. Our main result also yields the enumerations of two special classes of plane partitions with restricted parts.

Abstract:We give a proof of Ollinger's conjecture that the problem of tiling the plane with translated copies of a set of $8$ polyominoes is undecidable. The techniques employed in our proof include a different orientation for simulating the Wang tiles in polyomino and a new method for encoding the colors of Wang tiles.
