Abstract:In this note we show existence and regularity of periodic tilings of the Euclidean space into equal cells containing a ball of fixed radius, which minimize either the classical or the fractional perimeter. We also discuss some qualitative properties of minimizers in dimensions $3$ and $4$.

Abstract:We prove the existence of periodic tessellations of $\mathbb{R}^N$ minimizing a general nonlocal perimeter functional, defined as the interaction between a set and its complement through a nonnegative kernel, which we assume to be either integrable at the origin, or singular, with a fractional type singularity. We reformulate the optimal partition problem as an isoperimetric problem among fundamental domains associated with discrete subgroups of $\mathbb{R}^N$ , and we provide the existence of a solution by using suitable concentrated compactness type arguments and compactness results for lattices. Finally, we discuss the possible optimality of the hexagonal tessellation in the planar case.

Abstract:We study periodic tessellations of the Euclidean space with unequal cells arising from the minimization of perimeter functionals. Existence results and qualitative properties of minimizers are discussed for different classes of problems, involving local and non-local perimeters. Regularity is then addressed in the general case under volume penalization, and in the planar case with the standard perimeter, prescribing the volumes of each cell. Finally, we show the optimality of hexagonal tilings among partitions with almost equal areas.

New free boundary minimal annuli of revolution in the 3-sphere

Abstract:We rigorously establish the existence of many free boundary minimal annuli with boundary in a geodesic sphere of $\mathbb{S}^3$. These arise as compact subdomains of a one-parameter family of complete minimal immersions of $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{S}^1$ into $\mathbb{S}^3$ described by do Carmo and Dajczer [1]. While the free boundary minimal annuli we exhibit may have self-intersections and may not be contained in a geodesic ball, we show that there is at least a one-parameter family of embedded examples that are contained in geodesic balls whose radius may be less than, equal to or greater than $\pi$/2. After explaining the connection to Otsuki tori [13], we establish lower bounds on the number of free boundary minimal annuli contained in each Otsuki torus in terms of the corresponding rational number. Finally, we show that some of the recent work of Lee and Seo [7] on isoperimetric inequalities and of Lima and Menezes [10] on index bounds extends to geodesic balls equal to or larger than a hemisphere.

Abstract:If a finite set $A$ tiles the integers by translations, it also admits a tiling whose period $M$ has the same prime factors as $|A|$. We prove that the minimal period of such a tiling is bounded by $\exp(c(\log D)^2/\log\log D)$, where $D$ is the diameter of $A$. In the converse direction, given $\epsilon>0$, we construct tilings whose minimal period has the same prime factors as $|A|$ and is bounded from below by $D^{3/2-\epsilon}$. We also discuss the relationship between minimal tiling period estimates and the Coven-Meyerowitz conjecture.

Regularity of sets of finite fractional perimeter and nonlocal minimal surfaces in metric measure spaces

Abstract:In the setting of a doubling metric measure space $(X,d,\mu)$, we study regularity of sets whose characteristic functions belong to the Besov class $B^s_{1,1}(X)$. Following a result of Visintin in $\mathbb{R}^n$, we provide a sufficient condition for membership in $B^s_{1,1}(X)$ given in terms of the upper Minkowski codimension of the regularized boundary of the set. We also show that if the characteristic function of a set belongs to $B^s_{1,1}(X)$, then its measure theoretic boundary has codimension $s$ Hausdorff measure zero. To the best of our knowledge, this result is new even in the Euclidean setting. By studying certain fat Cantor sets, we provide examples illustrating that the converses of these results do not hold in general. In the doubling metric measure space setting, we then consider minimizers of the nonlocal perimeter functional $\mathcal{J}_\Omega^s$, extending the definition introduced by Caffarelli, Roquejoffre, and Savin in $\mathbb{R}^n$, and prove existence, uniform density, and porosity results for minimizers.

Ahlfors regularity of continua that minimize maxitive set functions

Abstract:The primary objective of this paper is to establish the Ahlfors regularity of minimizers of set functions that satisfy a suitable maxitive condition on disjoint unions of sets. Our analysis focuses on minimizers within continua of the plane with finite one-dimensional Hausdorff measure. Through quantitative estimates, we prove that the length of a minimizer inside the ball centered at one of its points is comparable to the radius of the ball. By operating within an abstract framework, we are able to encompass a diverse range of entities, including spectral functionals defined in terms of the eigenvalues of elliptic operators, the inradius, and the maximum of the torsion function. These entities are of interest for several applications, such as structural engineering, urban planning, and quantum mechanics.

Abstract:Exploring nonminimal-rank quasicrystals, which have symmetries that can be found in both periodic and aperiodic crystals, often provides new insight into the physical nature of aperiodic long-range order in models that are easier to treat. Motivated by the prevalence of experimental systems exhibiting aperiodic long-range order with hexagonal and trigonal symmetry, we introduce a generic two-parameter family of 2-dimensional quasiperiodic tilings with such symmetries. We focus on the special case of trigonal and hexagonal Fibonacci, or golden-mean, tilings, analogous to the well studied square Fibonacci tiling. We first generate the tilings using a generalized version of de Bruijn's dual grid method. We then discuss their interpretation in terms of projections of a hypercubic lattice from six dimensional superspace. We conclude by concentrating on two of the hexagonal members of the family, and examining a few of their properties more closely, while providing a set of substitution rules for their generation.

Rigidity of min-max minimal disks in $3$-balls with non-negative Ricci curvature

Abstract:In this paper we prove a rigidity statement for free boundary minimal surfaces produced via min-max methods. More precisely, we prove that for any Riemannian metric $g$ on the 3-ball $B$ with non-negative Ricci curvature and $\mathrm{II}_{\partial B}\ge g_{|\partial B}$, there exists a free boundary minimal disk $\Delta$ of least area among all free boundary minimal disks in $(B,g)$. Moreover, the area of any such $\Delta$ equals to the width of $(B,g)$, $\Delta$ has index one, and the length of $\partial\Delta$ is bounded from above by $2\pi$. Furthermore, the length of $\partial\Delta$ equals to $2\pi$ if and only if $(B,g)$ is isometric to the Euclidean unit ball. This is related to a rigidity result obtained by F.C. Marques and A. Neves in the closed case. The proof uses a rigidity statement concerning half-balls with non-negative Ricci curvature which is true in any dimension.

Periodicity and decidability of translational tilings by rational polygonal sets

Abstract:The periodic tiling conjecture asserts that if a region $\Sigma\subset \mathbb R^d$ tiles $\mathbb R^d$ by translations then it admits at least one fully periodic tiling. This conjecture is known to hold in $\mathbb R$, and recently it was disproved in sufficiently high dimensions. In this paper, we study the periodic tiling conjecture for polygonal sets: bounded open sets in $\mathbb R^2$ whose boundary is a finite union of line segments. We prove the periodic tiling conjecture for any polygonal tile whose vertices are rational. As a corollary of our argument, we also obtain the decidability of tilings by rational polygonal sets. Moreover, we prove that any translational tiling by a rational polygonal tile is weakly-periodic, i.e., can be partitioned into finitely many singly-periodic pieces.

Half Space Property in RCD(0,N) spaces

Abstract:The goal of this note is to prove the Half Space Property for $RCD(0,N)$ spaces, namely that if $(X,d,m)$ is a parabolic $RCD(0,N)$ space and $ C \subset X \times \mathbb{R}$ is locally the boundary of a locally perimeter minimizing set and it is contained in a half space, then $C$ is a locally finite union of horizontal slices. If the assumption of local perimeter minimizing is strengthened into global perimeter minimizing, then the conclusion can be strengthened into uniqueness of the horizontal slice. As a consequence, we obtain oscillation estimates and a Half Space Theorem for minimal hypersurfaces in products $M \times \mathbb{R}$, where $M$ is a parabolic smooth manifold (possibly weighted and with boundary) with non-negative Ricci curvature. On the way of proving the main results, we also obtain some properties of Green's functions on $RCD(K,N)$ spaces that are of independent interest.

Quasisymmetric geometry of low-dimensional random spaces

Abstract:We initiate a study of the quasisymmetric uniformization of naturally arising random fractals and show that many of them fall outside the realm of quasisymmetric uniformization to simple canonical spaces. We begin with the trace, the graph of Brownian motion, and various variants of the Schramm-Loewner evolution $\mathrm{SLE}_\kappa$ for $\kappa>0$, and show that a.s. neither is a quasiarc. After that, we study the conformal loop ensemble $\mathrm{CLE}_\kappa$, $\kappa \in (\frac{8}{3}, 4]$, and show that the collection of all points outside the loops is a.s. homeomorphic to the standard Sierpiński carpet, but not quasisymmetrically equivalent to a round carpet.

Abstract:We consider surfaces in ${\mathbb R}^3$ of type ${\mathbb S}^2$ which minimize the Willmore functional with prescribed isoperimetric ratio. The existence of smooth minimizers was proved by Schygulla (Archive Rational Mechanics and Analysis, 2012). In the singular limit when the isoperimetric ratio converges to zero, he showed convergence to a double round sphere in the sense of varifolds. Here we give a full blowup analysis of this limit, showing that the two spheres are connected by a catenoidal neck. Besides its geometric interest, the problem was studied as a simplified model in the theory of cell membranes, see e.g. Berndl, Lipowsky, Seifert (Physical Review A, 1991).

Periodic Polyhedra in Spaces of Constant Curvature

Abstract:We show the existence of families of periodic polyhedra in spaces of constant curvature whose fundamental domains can be obtained by attaching prisms and antiprisms to Archimedean solids. These polyhedra have constant discrete curvature and are weakly regular in the sense that all faces are congruent regular polygons and all vertex figures are congruent as well. Some of our examples have stronger conformal or metric regularity. The polyhedra are invariant under either a group generated by reflections at the faces of a Platonic solid, or a group generated by transformations that are reflections at the faces of a Platonic solid, followed by a rotation about an axis perpendicular to the respective face. In particular, suitable quotients will be compact polyhedral surfaces in (possibly non-compact) spaceforms.

The Double Bubble Problem in the Hexagonal Norm

Abstract:We study the double bubble problem where the perimeter is taken with respect to the hexagonal norm, i.e. the norm whose unit circle in $\mathbb{R}^2$ is the regular hexagon. We provide an elementary proof for the existence of minimizing sets for volume ratio parameter $\alpha\in (0,1]$ by arguing that any minimizer must belong to a small family of parameterized sets. This family is further simplified by showing that $60^{\circ}$ angles are not optimal as well as other geometric exclusions. We then provide a minimizer for all $\alpha\in(0,1]$ except at a single point, for which we find two minimizing configurations.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the stability and minimizing properties of higher codimensional surfaces in Euclidean space associated with the $f$-weighted area-functional $$\mathcal{E}_f(M)=\int_M f(x)\; d \mathcal{H}_k$$ with the density function $f(x)=g(|x|)$ and $g(t)$ is non-negative, which develop the recent works by U. Dierkes and G. Huisken (Math. Ann., 20 October 2023) on hypersurfaces with the density function $|x|^\alpha$. Under suitable assumptions on $g(t)$, we prove that minimal cones with globally flat normal bundles are $f$-stable, and we also prove that the regular minimal cones satisfying Lawlor curvature criterion, the highly singular determinantal varieties and Pfaffian varieties without some exceptional cases are $f$-minimizing. As an application, we show that $k$-dimensional minimal cones over product of spheres are $|x|^\alpha$-stable for $\alpha\geq-k+2\sqrt{2(k-1)}$, the oriented stable minimal hypercones are $|x|^\alpha$-stable for $\alpha\geq 0$, and we also show that the minimal cones over product of spheres $\mathcal{C}=C \left(S^{k_1} \times \cdots \times S^{k_{m}}\right)$ are $|x|^\alpha$-minimizing for $\dim \mathcal{C} \geq 7$, $k_i>1$ and $\alpha \geq 0$, the Simons cones $C(S^{p} \times S^{p})(p\geq 1)$ are $|x|^\alpha$-minimizing for any $\alpha \geq 1$, which relaxes the assumption $1\leq\alpha \leq 2p$ in \cite{DH23}.

Random minimal surfaces in spheres

Abstract:For any dimension $n>1$, we construct a branched minimal immersion $\psi_n$ from a closed Riemann surface $\Sigma_n$ to the round $n$-sphere of radius $\sqrt{8}$, such that if $\Sigma_n$ is endowed with the pullback metric and if $K$ is its Gaussian curvature, then $\Sigma_n$ is almost hyperbolic in the sense that $$\lim_{n\to \infty} \frac{1}{\mathrm{Area}(\Sigma_n)}\int_{\Sigma_n} |K+1|=0$$ and $\Sigma_n$ Benjamini-Schramm converges to the hyperbolic plane. Our proof is based on a connection between minimal surface theory and random matrix theory. The maps $\psi_n$ are obtained by applying the spherical Plateau problem to random unitary representations $\rho_N$ of the free group $F_2$.

Abstract:Quasiminimal sets are sets for which a pertubation can decrease the area but only in a controlled manner. We prove that in dimensions $2$ and $3$, such sets separate a locally finite family of local John domains. Reciprocally, we show that this property is a sufficient for quasiminimality. In addition, we show that quasiminimal sets locally separate the space in two components, except at isolated points in $\R^2$ or out a of subset of dimension strictly less than $N-1$ in $\R^N$.
