Abstract:Background: The intelligent processes automation has been cataloged as one of the most potential and strategic technology solutions to develop a corporate digital transformation. Method: This paper introduces essential concepts to create Intelligent Process Automation (IPA) in industries and proposes a framework to implement IPA technologies successfully. The approach involves: firstly, assembling a good implementation setup and deeply researching the process using process mining techniques. Secondly, choosing and locating the best AI technology inside the IPA. Finally, defining an appropriate architecture of the IPA. Results: The paper illustrates an IPA use case in the manufacturing industry, where it is possible to automate the process of sending production orders to a manufacturing plant and optimize waste and plant capacity significantly. Conclusions: The research depicts the potential of intelligent process automation and its quantifiable benefits in the manufacturing process, and the contribution can be applied to different enterprises with a global context.

Abstract:In this survey, we study how recent advances in machine intelligence are disrupting the world of business processes. Over the last decade, there has been steady progress towards the automation of business processes under the umbrella of ``robotic process automation'' (RPA). However, we are currently at an inflection point in this evolution, as a new paradigm called ``Intelligent Process Automation'' (IPA) emerges, bringing machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to bear in order to improve business process outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to provide a survey of this emerging theme and identify key open research challenges at the intersection of AI and business processes. We hope that this emerging theme will spark engaging conversations at the RPA Forum.

Abstract:Abstract Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) integration offer great potential for the future of corporate automation and increased productivity. RPA rapidly evolves into Intelligent Process Automation (IPA) by incorporating advanced technologies and capabilities beyond simple task automation. The paper aims to identify the organisational, technological, and human-centred challenges that companies face in transitioning from RPA to IPA. The research process involved conducting the scientific literature search using the ResearchRabbit AI tool, which provided a set of reference papers relevant to the formulated research questions. As a result of the conducted literature review, the authors identified key challenges and possible countermeasures for companies transitioning from RPA to IPA. The resulting collection of reference scientific articles formed the basis for this study’s content and substantive analysis. Furthermore, this study contributes by identifying artificial intelligence techniques and algorithms, such as Natural Language Processing (NLP), Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL), predictive analytics, and others, that can be integrated with RPA to facilitate the transition to IPA. The paper also offers insights into potential future research areas.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence for IT Operations (AIOps) is an emerging interdisciplinary field arising in the intersection between the research areas of machine learning, big data, streaming analytics, and the management of IT operations. AIOps, as a field, is a candidate to produce the future standard for IT operation management. To that end, AIOps has several challenges. First, it needs to combine separate research branches from other research fields like software reliability engineering. Second, novel modelling techniques are needed to understand the dynamics of different systems. Furthermore, it requires to lay out the basis for assessing: time horizons and uncertainty for imminent SLA violations, the early detection of emerging problems, autonomous remediation, decision making, support of various optimization objectives. Moreover, a good understanding and interpretability of these aiding models are important for building trust between the employed tools and the domain experts. Finally, all this will result in faster adoption of AIOps, further increase the interest in this research field and contribute to bridging the gap towards fully-autonomous operating IT systems. The main aim of the AIOPS workshop is to bring together researchers from both academia and industry to present their experiences, results, and work in progress in this field. The workshop aims to strengthen the community and unite it towards the goal of joining the efforts for solving the main challenges the field is currently facing. A consensus and adoption of the principles of openness and reproducibility will boost the research in this emerging area significantly.

Abstract:In recent years, the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is experiencing a boom, caused by recent breakthroughs in computing power, AI techniques, and software architectures. Among the many fields being impacted by this paradigm shift, process engineering has experienced the benefits caused by AI. However, the published methods and applications in process engineering are diverse, and there is still much unexploited potential. Herein, the goal of providing a systematic overview of the current state of AI and its applications in process engineering is discussed. Current applications are described and classified according to a broader systematic. Current techniques, types of AI as well as pre‐ and postprocessing will be examined similarly and assigned to the previously discussed applications. Given the importance of mechanistic models in process engineering as opposed to the pure black box nature of most of AI, reverse engineering strategies as well as hybrid modeling will be highlighted. Furthermore, a holistic strategy will be formulated for the application of the current state of AI in process engineering.

Abstract:Automatic algorithm configuration addresses the problem of determining the settings of an algorithm’s parameters to optimize its performance. It has most prominently been applied to optimize solvers for hard combinatorial problems (for example, SAT, MIP, ASP, and AI planning) as well as to hyperparameter optimization of flexible machine-learning frameworks (such as deep neural networks, or the space of algorithms defined by the Waikato environment for knowledge analysis, WEKA), but it also has applications in many more areas. Additionally, algorithm configuration has been performed manually by domain experts in a tedious and time-consuming optimization process, a task humans are poorly suited for.
