Abstract:In this paper, we consider the Neumann problem for parabolic Hessian quotient equations. We show that the $k$-admissible solution of the parabolic Hessian quotient equation exists for all time and converges to the smooth solution of elliptic Hessian quotient equations. Also the solutions of the classical Neumann problem converge to a translating solution.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the existence and convergence of the Neumann problem for the parabolic Hessian quotient equation. Specifically, the authors consider the Neumann problem in the following form:
\[
\begin{cases}
u_t=\log\frac{\sigma_k(D^2u)}{\sigma_l(D^2u)} - \log f(x, u)&\text{in }\Omega\times[0, T),\\
u_{\nu}=\phi(x, u)&\text{in }\partial\Omega\times[0, T),\\
u(x, 0)=u_0&\text{in }\Omega,
\end{cases}
\]
where \(0\leq l < k\leq n\), \(\nu\) is the outer unit normal vector of \(\partial\Omega\), \(T\) is the maximum time, \(\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n\) is a strictly convex bounded domain with a smooth boundary. For any \(k = 1,\ldots,n\),
\[
\sigma_k(D^2u)=\sigma_k(\lambda(D^2u))=\sum_{1\leq i_1 < i_2 <\cdots< i_k\leq n}\lambda_{i_1}\lambda_{i_2}\cdots\lambda_{i_k},
\]
where \(\lambda(D^2u)=(\lambda_1,\ldots,\lambda_n)\) are the eigenvalues of \(D^2u\). For convenience, let \(\sigma_0 = 1\). Recall that the Gårding cone is defined as
\[
\Gamma_k=\{\lambda\in\mathbb{R}^n:\sigma_i(\lambda)>0,\forall1\leq i\leq k\}.
\]
If \(\lambda(D^2u)\in\Gamma_k\) holds for any \((x, t)\in\Omega\times(0, T)\) (or \(x\in\Omega\)), then \(u\) is called a \(k\)-convex function. If the solution \(u(x, t)\) of equation (1.1) is \(k\)-convex, then equation (1.1) is parabolic, and at this time \(u\) is called a \(k\)-admissible solution of (1.1).
When \(l = 0\), (1.1) is called the \(k\)-Hessian parabolic equation. In particular, when \(k = 1, l = 0\), (1.1) is the parabolic Laplace equation; when \(k = n, l = 0\), (1.1) is the parabolic Monge - Ampère equation. The Hessian quotient equation is a more general Hessian - type equation, which naturally arises in classical geometry, conformal geometry and Kähler geometry.
The main objective of the paper is to prove that the \(k\)-admissible solution \(u(x, t)\) exists for all time and converges to a smooth solution of the elliptic Hessian quotient equation. Moreover, the solution of the classical Neumann problem also converges to a translation solution.
