Road Materials and Pavement Design
Abstract:Bitumen-stabilised materials (BSM) are emerging as eco-friendly solutions for pavement base layers, addressing environmental concerns linked to traditional road construction methods. By incorporating virgin granular or recycled materials, stabilised with bitumen emulsion or foamed bitumen, BSM creates durable base layers. Compared to bitumen emulsion, foamed bitumen typically offers higher stiffness. However, hot-mix asphalt (HMA) design frameworks cannot be directly applied, necessitating dedicated mix design processes. This study reviews BSM materials, mix design methodologies, and performance factors in lab and field settings, alongside sustainability considerations. The addition of 1–2% cement or lime significantly improves BSM's strength and durability. BSM provide cost-effective, resilient solutions for pavement construction and rehabilitation, particularly in regions with underperforming conventional base materials. The findings support efforts to establish standardised mix design procedures, ensuring BSM's suitability for long-term, sustainable infrastructure development.
