Road Materials and Pavement Design
Abstract:Reclaimed subbase material (RSM) requires proper treatment for its recycling in construction projects i.e. roads and highways, to improve its strength and durability. This study investigates the performance of RSM stabilized with different percentages of lime, sand, stone dust, and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). The quality of two selected RSMs has been assessed by comparing them with their parent aggregates considering Los Angeles abrasion value, flakiness, and elongation indices. Also, extensive laboratory investigations comprised of grain size distribution, modified Proctor compaction, permeability, and soaked California bearing ratio (CBR(s)) tests were carried out. The addition of selected additives in RSMs had a positive impact on the investigated geotechnical properties. The CBR(s)-values were observed to meet the requirement of a subbase for flexible pavement. Moreover, the proposed recycling strategy curtailed the requirement of virgin material in the subbase layer and also presented a cost-effective and eco-friendly model of flexible pavement.
