Abstract:The effects of physicochemical modification of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the explosion dynamics of a nanobomb, comprising nitromethane confined in CNTs, were investigated using nonequilibrium reactive molecular dynamics and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. CNTs with chirality, nitrogen-doping, and monovacancy defect were utilized. All modifications commonly reduced the time for nanobomb bursting under thermal shock and led to an overall similar reaction pathway. Bursting time of chirality-modified nanobomb was shortened by inferior mechanical property, whereas nitrogen-doping and monovacancy modification reduced the time by increased chemical reactivity (i.e., facilitated attachment of reaction intermediates to the nanocontainer). DFT calculations showed that nitrogen-doping and introducing monovacancy defects lowered the activation energy and heat of formation of the Stone-Wales defects and induced high binding energy of the intermediates, whereas chirality modification alone was ineffective. In addition, decomposition of the nanobomb was initiated via another two heating methods (i.e., electric spark and electromagnetic induction). Under a continuous electric field, bursting of nanobomb with electromagnetic induction was much faster due to oscillating frequency. This theoretical exploration of the effects of physicochemical modification of the nanocontainer and the explosion-initiation methods on the explosion of nanobombs provides in-depth understanding of a confined nanostructured high-energy material.
Explosion Study of Nitromethane Confined in Carbon Nanotube Nanocontainer Via Reactive Molecular Dynamics

Abstract:Explosion dynamics of confined nitromethane (NM) fluid has been investigated by using nonequilibrium reactive molecular dynamics. For the confinement, NM was encapsulated into a nanocontainer, which is the capped (20, 20) armchair carbon nanotube (CNT). After thermal energy was injected into confined NM at various densities, the nanobomb consisting of NM and CNT was fully decomposed including bursting phenomena. We found that the time for explosion was reduced as density and initial temperature increased. While NM was being decomposed into intermediates, defects of Stone Wales type (5-7 carbon atoms ring) or high-order rings were randomly formed at the cap and side wall of CNT. Subsequently, the intermediates functionalized carbon atoms at the defects, from which nanoholes were evolved. The CNT burst when the size of nanohole became about 8 A. Further, we demonstrated that defective CNT with vacancy exploded faster because carbon atoms at defect sites played a seed role to make nanoholes. This theoretical study, which is related to nanoscale explosion, provides a new insight into confined NM system to apply for a small-size target.

Abstract:Based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, we report on the first observation of two different modes of wire explosion for nanosized powder production in 5-30 kPa ambient gas, depending on the property of wire material. For wire material with relatively high resistivity, such as titanium, more than one vapor burst was observed. Abstract:Electrical explosion of wire (EEW) in embedded-gas is a simple and efficient method for producing nanosize powder of metal, alloy, or metal compound. In this paper, a simple EEW device is constructed. It consists of a low inductance 2 μF capacitors typically charged to 10-30 kV, a triggered gas switch, and a production chamber housing the exploding wires. With the EEW device nanosize powders of copper oxides and titanium oxides were successfully synthesized, and the effect of gas pressure on the average particle size is experimentally investigated. The synthesized powders were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and BET surface area analyzer. As a result, the size of the most powders synthesized with right experimental conditions is found to be smaller than 100 nm, and the average particle size is about 50nm. © 2008 Institute of Fluid Physics, C.

Abstract:A device for nano-powder production by electrical explosion of wires was designed and built. Eight wires housed in the discharge chamber are exploded one by one before opening the chamber for the collection of the produced nano-powder. To increase the rate of energy deposition into a wire, the electrical behavior of the discharge circuit including the exploding wire was simulated. The results showed that both reducing the circuit inductance and reducing the capacitance of the energy-storage capacitor (keeping the storage energy constant) can increase the energy deposition rate. Abstract:Pulsed wire discharge in embedded-gas is a simple and efficient method for producing nanosize powder of metal, alloy, or metal compound. The powder size and size distribution are strongly related to the deposition energy into the wire load by joule heating. This paper established a numerical model to analyze and predict the behavior of electrical circuits containing pulsed current source and exploding wire load. In the model, the entire process of wire explosion is subdivided into five stages: solid heating, melting, liquid heating, evaporation, and plasma growth. Voltage waveform, current waveform and deposition energy on the wire can be numerically simulated by the model. Based on a number of simulations, an actual exploding wire device for nano-powder production was constructed. The test voltage and current waveforms are in good agreement with the calculated results.

Abstract:In order to study the explosion of micro‐sized and nanosized iron powder, the explosion overpressure and flame propagation were measured in a 20‐L near‐spherical explosion pressure experiment and a Hartmann tube experiment. The explosion overpressure experiments show that the optimum explosion concentrations of micro‐sized and nanosized iron powder are 750 and 375 g/m3, respectively. The maximum explosion pressure and the maximum explosion pressure rise rate of nanosized iron powder are 0.56 MPa and 46.41 MPa/s, which are 144% and 225% of that of micro‐sized iron powder, respectively. Under the optimum explosion concentration, the explosion flame of nanosized iron powder is brighter, and the propagation time is shorter. The maximum propagation velocity of micro‐sized and nanosized iron powder flame is 0.84 and 6.55 m/s, respectively, and the flame pulsation degree of micro‐sized iron powder is larger. The spherical particles and the cracks on the surface of the product particles were observed in the micro images of the explosion products, and the explosion mechanism model of micro‐sized and nanosized iron powder was obtained. It was observed that the deformation of micro‐sized iron particles intensifies, forming regular and complete spherical iron oxide particles.

Abstract:The electrical behavior of exploding wires was obtained by numerically solving the nonlinear differential equation describing the discharge circuit. For metal wires of high conductivity and low sublimation heat, such as copper, aluminum, gold, and silver, the circuit simulation can be well performed based on the resistivity model developed by Tucker in which the resisitivity is expressed by the explicit functions of specific action, i.e., rho = f(g). For metals such as titanium and zinc with anomalously changing resistivity, i.e., decreasing rather than increasing with the liquid heating, the circuit simulation of the exploding wires call be performed using the implicit relationship between p and g that is read out point by point from the experimentally measured curve. Using the circuit simulation, the rate of the energy deposition in the exploding wires before the explosion can he obtained, which is helpful to choose the right experimental conditions for possible overheating that is desirable for getting smaller nano-powders produced by exploding wires.

Abstract:A small electrical explosion of wire （EEW） setup for nanopowder production is constructed. It consists of a low inductance capacitor bank of 2 μF-4 μF typically charged to 8 kV-30 kV, a triggered gas switch, and a production chamber housing the exploding wire load and ambient gas. With the EEW device, nanosize powders of titanium oxides, titanium nitrides, copper oxides, and zinc oxides are successfully synthesized. The average particle size of synthesized powders under different experimental conditions is in a range of 20nm-80nm. The pressure of ambient gas or wire vapor can strongly affect the average particle size. The lower the pressure, the smaller the particle size is. For wire material with relatively high resistivity, such as titanium, whose deposited energy Wd is often less than sublimation energy W s due to the flashover breakdown along the wire prematurely ending the Joule heating process, the synthesized particle size of titanium oxides or titanium nitrides increases with overheat coefficient k （k = W d /Ws ） increasing.

Abstract:The exlposive eletrical characteristics of eletric exploding copper wire is discussed.Through the analysis of metal wire electrical explosion process,we understand that the wire eletrical explosion is divided into fixed additive heat and phase change heat,the lines of current density for the wire eletrical explosion is inversely proportional to time,the current pause time is proportional to the length of the wire.In this theory,the LTspice circuit simulaiton of wire eletrical explosion is completed.Based on the simulation data,constructing test system,in 15kV,1kA conditions,we do the electrical explosion test to the 0.05mm diameter constantan wire.Synchronously acquire the voltage current waveform,and the power characteristics and impedance characteristics are analyzed.The test results show that: wire electrical explosion is divided into phase transition,pause,plasma discharge this three stages,the peak current generated by the explosion wire is inversely proportional to length of the explosion wire.

Abstract:Ultrafine explosives show high safety and reliable initiation and have been widely used in aerospace, military, and industrial systems. The outstanding performance of ultrafine explosives is largely given by the unique void defects according to the simulation results. However, the structures and effects of internal nano-voids in ultrafine explosive particles have been rarely investigated experimentally. In this work, contrast-variation small angle X-ray scattering was verified to reliably measure the structures of internal nano-voids in ultrafine explosive 2,6-diamino-3,5-dinitropyrazine-1-oxide (LLM-105) and 2,2',4,4',6,6'-hexanitro diphenylethylene (HNS). The size of nano-voids is around 10 nm, and the estimated number of nano-voids in a single particle is considerable. Moreover, the thermal stability of ultrafine LLM-105 was improved via changing the structures of nano-voids. This work provides a methodology for the study of nano-void defects in ultrafine organic particles and may pave the path to enhance the performance of ultrafine explosives via defect engineering.

The Influence of Discharge Mode on Morphology of Al–Ni Nanoparticles Prepared by Underwater Electrical Wire Explosion

Abstract:We report the results of experiments investigating the influence of discharge mode on morphology of Al–Ni bimetallic nanoparticles prepared by underwater electrical explosion (UEE) of intertwined Al/Ni wire. The experiments were conducted using a pulsed power generator with the stored energy of [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]J (underheat mode) and [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]J (overheat mode), delivering to the intertwined Al/Ni wire a [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]kA current rising during [Formula: see text]s. By analyzing electrical signals, we conclude that there exists a competitive process between Al wire and Ni wire, and the latter always lags behind the former in various stages, duo to the difference of electrical resistivity. Using transmission electron microscope (TEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), the morphology and element composition of nanopowders obtained at underheat mode and overheat mode were studied. The results reveal that core-shell structured Al–Ni nanoparticles can be easily obtained at underheat mode, due to the mismatched specific surface energy and matching lattice type between aluminum and nickel. Besides, the Al–Ni powder prepared by underwater electrical wire explosion (UEWE) has a smaller particle size (less than 100[Formula: see text]nm) and more consistent particle size distribution compared with traditional preparation methods. These results show that UEWE is very attractive for the preparation of Al–Ni nanopowders, which is helpful in improving the specific surface area of Raney–Ni catalyst.

Abstract:Summary form only given. Exploding wire is performed by rapidly heating the wire to vaporization temperature with a high current pulse flowing through the wire. Exploding wires have found many applications among which are the opening switches named fuses in the circuits for inductive energy storage, the discharge loads of X-pinch or Z-pinches, namely wire array Z-pinches, and the production of nanopowders. The behavior of exploding wires for nanopowder production was studied by experiments and numerical simulation. In experiments, the evolution of the exploding wire was recorded by taking time- resolved pictures of the explosion with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. From the interferograms the electron density and the expansion speed of the metallic vapor from the exploding wire can be deduced. The shock wave in front of the expanding wire could be visualized. In numerical simulation, the electrical behavior of exploding wires was obtained by solving nonlinear differential equation describing the discharge circuit. Abstract:Nanosize powders of zinc oxide are of potential application in making better varistors for metal oxide arresters. Production of nanosize powders of zinc oxide by electrical explosion of zinc wires in oxygen was experimentally investigated. A pulse current generator was constructed for exploding the wire. The generator is composed of a spark gap switch triggered at a voltage from 10 kV to 40 kV and a capacitor of 2 muF charged to a few tens kilovolts depending on the mass of the wire to be exploded. A discharge chamber for housing the wire was evacuated to a gas pressure below 0.1 torr and then filled with oxygen at pressure in range of 100 torr ~760 torr. One Zn wire (0.2-0.5 mm in diameter, 50-100 mm in length) as the load of the pulse current generator was located in the center of the chamber. A mechanical system was designed to feed the wires without opening the chamber. After 10 wires were exploded, the powders were collected by the evacuation through membrane filter with pore size of 100 nm in diameter. The powders were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, BET surface area analyzer and laser particle size analyzer. The size of the most powders is found to be smaller than 100 nm.
Effect of porosity on rapid dynamic compaction of nickel nanopowder

Abstract:The shock-loading behavior of nanomaterials requires careful investigation because these complex systems are widely used in environments subjected to impulsive loads. Planar plate impact experiments are conducted to study shock compaction waves in 94% porous nickel powder containing spherical ∼55 nm particles in the pressure and strain rate ranges of 0.1-0.4 GPa and 106-107 s-1, respectively. The distinct two-step structure of these waves is captured by a laser velocimetry technique with high time resolution. This structure is caused by the formation of faster precursor waves traveling ahead of main compaction waves. The complexity of the shock Hugoniot curve of the tested nanomaterial is described using the obtained two-wave data and earlier results for higher pressures. The effect of initial porosity on the fronts of both waves and compressed states behind them is demonstrated using the current data and those that were collected previously for 50% porous samples of similar nanopowder.
The Physical-Mechanical Properties of Aluminum Nanocomposites Produced by High Energy Explosion Impact

Abstract:The present paper uses explosion compacting of Al nanoparticles to create light nanocomposite with increased physico-mechanical properties. Russian civil explosive Uglenit was chosen as high energy material for compacting. The formation of the structure and properties of aluminum based materials after shock-wave impact was studied. It was found that shock-wave treatment of different samples a) aluminum powder and b) powder mixtures Al +10 wt.% C (in the form of detonation diamonds) and c) Al +10 wt.% Al2O3 produces nanostructed materials with almost the theoretical density. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that in the samples with the addition of carbon and aluminum oxide was formed two-phase state of aluminum with a significantly different structure parameters. In this case, the lattice parameter of nanophase increased by 0.5%, which testifies to its nonequilibrium state. This increase of the parameter may be due to compressive stress, evaluation of which gives the value of 350 MPa. It was shown that the materials have high values of mechanical properties — hardness, compressive yield strength.

Abstract:The nickel-based nanoparticles such as nickel oxide, carbon coated nickel, carbon coated nickel carbide and their mixtures were synthesized by systematically varying the component of explosive precursors and technological parameters. The features of the as-obtained nanoparticles were characterized with TEM, HRTEM, EDX, XRD and XRF. The data from these optimally designed experimental can govern the different types of nickel-based nanoparticles. The formation mechanism during the detonation process were also discussed and analyzed.

Abstract:The method of producing nanopowder by evaporation by a high-energy electron beam has a great potential for refractory substances, since the electron beam makes it possible to obtain high the power density in the interaction spot is not more than 3–4 cm2 and, as a result, high temperature gradients. The accelerator and electron beam have a high efficiency of transferring energy from the power grid to evaporation (up to 70 %). The electron beam does not introduce pollution and is not selective to the material. Work specifics with an electron accelerator is associated with radiation caused by electron deceleration and high temperatures. These phenomena greatly complicate the monitoring of processes occurring in the evaporation zone. Therefore, at present, the method requires development and adaptation to specific materials. In this work, we studied the process of obtaining nanosized tungsten powder by the indicated method. Experiments were tested that allow obtaining data on the processes of nanopowder synthesis by calorimetry of the evaporation zone and measurements of the radiation level near it. The technology was developed and the parameters of the obtained tungsten nanopowders were determined. Showing ways to increase productivity This method is applied to tungsten.

Abstract:To study the physicochemical (including adsorption) properties of nanodiamond, it is necessary to reproducibly obtain a carbon surface of an individual particle without metallic impurities of an unknown composition. Such a surface can be obtained through an additional procedure of the deep purification of a commercially available sample. This work is devoted to a study of the composition of non-combustible impurities of detonation diamond nanopowder. Using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, iron and titanium are identified as the main metallic components of the non-combustible residue, the presence of Cr, Ni, Zr, As, and Sb is qualitatively established. The expected composition of the main molecular ions formed on the surface of the non-combustible residue under laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry conditions is presented. Based on the results of the mass spectrometric analysis, a version of two-stage chemical treatment of detonation diamond nanopowder is proposed, which made it possible to reduce the mass fraction of non-combustible impurities during annealing in air from 2.0 to 0.1%.

Abstract:Micron-sized flake aluminum dust has great potential in rocket propellants and advanced thermobaric weapons because of its large specific surface area. A 20 L near-spherical explosion system and a 2D simulation model are established to study the explosion intensity parameters and transient reaction details of flake aluminum dust/air two-phase explosion. The transient reaction rate of flake aluminum dust/air is mainly determined by the oxygen diffusion rate and chemical kinetic rate. Nano-sized Al2O3 products have two distribution states: some particles are dissociated in the explosion container and gradually collide and agglomerate to form a pure product block; others adhere to the surface of flake aluminum dust, which hinders the further contact between aluminum dust and air. The maximum explosion overpressure (9.16 bar) occurs when the aluminum dust concentration is about 400 g/m3, and the maximum pressure rise rate of flake aluminum dust explosion can reach 1560 bar/s. A colorimetric thermometer is used to record the flame temperature of the gas/dust two-phase explosion and the highest flame temperature is about 3500 K. This work will provide reference for explosion protection and efficient utilization of flake aluminum dust.
