Abstract:Long-term frequency instabilities in vapor-cell clocks mainly arise from fluctuations of the experimental and environmental parameters that are converted to clock frequency fluctuations via various physical processes. Here, we discuss the frequency sensitivities and the resulting stability limitations at one-day timescale for a rubidium vapor-cell clock based on a compact magnetron-type cavity operated in air (no vacuum environment). Under ambient laboratory conditions, the external atmospheric pressure fluctuations may dominantly limit the clock stability via the barometric effect. We establish a complete long-term instability budget for our clock operated under stable pressure conditions. Where possible, the fluctuations of experimental parameters are measured via the atomic response. The measured clock instability of <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$ < 2\times 10^{-14}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> at one day is limited by the intensity light-shift effect, which could further be reduced by active stabilization of the laser intensity or stronger optical pumping. The analyses reported here show the way toward simple, compact, and low-power vapor-cell atomic clocks with excellent long-term stabilities <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\le 10^{-14}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> at one day when operated in ambient laboratory conditions.

Abstract:Nowadays, the portable atomic clocks with small size and low power consumption have attracted much attention. With the development of the coherent population trapping (CPT) and the micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technologies, it is possible to fabricate the miniature atomic clocks with power consumption less than 100mW. Researchers have already made great progress in the miniaturization of VCSELs, RF circuits, and photodiodes, which are the key technologies of the chip-scale atomic clock (CSAC). However, the fabrication of micro alkali atomic vapor cells is still to be improved. In this article, we describe the fabrication of micro Rb atomic vapor cells with inner dimensions of 3 mm length and 3 mm radius using anodic bonding and chemical reaction between BaN6 and RbCl. The optical absorption and CPT resonances of the cells were measured slightly above the room temperature. In this condition, the consumption in the temperature control will be very low. Moreover, the long life (more than four years) of the cells makes it possible to use them in CSACs.
An optical atomic clock using $4D_J$ states of rubidium

Abstract:We analyze an optical atomic clock using two-photon $5S_{1/2} \rightarrow 4D_J$ transitions in rubidium. Four one- and two-color excitation schemes to probe the fine-structure states $4D_{3/2}$ and $4D_{5/2}$ are considered in detail. We compare key characteristics of Rb $4D_J$ and $5D_{5/2}$ two-photon clocks. The $4D_J$ clock features a high signal-to-noise ratio due to two-photon decay at favorable wavelengths, low dc electric and magnetic susceptibilities, and minimal black-body shifts. Ac Stark shifts from the clock interrogation lasers are compensated by two-color Rabi-frequency matching. We identify a "magic" wavelength near 1060~nm, which allows for in-trap, Doppler-free clock-transition interrogation with lattice-trapped cold atoms. From our analysis of clock statistics and systematics, we project a quantum-noise-limited relative clock stability at the $10^{-13}/\sqrt{\tau(s)}$-level, with integration time $\tau$ in seconds, and a relative accuracy of $\sim 10^{-13}$. We describe a potential architecture for implementing the proposed clock using a single telecom clock laser at 1550~nm, which is conducive to optical communication and long-distance clock comparisons. Our work could be of interest in efforts to realize small and portable Rb clocks and in high-precision measurements of atomic properties of Rb $4D_J$-states.

Abstract:Since the Rubidium clock makes it possible to predict the receiver clock offset,positioning accuracy could be enhanced through an improvement in clock offset estimation,and Rubidium clock aiding will definitely improve the vertical accuracy.Since the Rubidium clock drifts very slowly,an alternative navigation algorithm was designed for Rubidium clock constrained GPS using the adaptive low-pass filter.The implementation aspects of the method is also discussed along with a numerical example to validate the proposed method.

Abstract:In the systems of micro positioning,navigation and timing(Micro-PNT),the chip-scale atomic clock(CSAC)serves as the core of physical micro-clock module,whose development has a strong connection with positioning accuracy and timing ability of micro-PNT system.As the key part of CSAC,the atom vapor cell directly determines the volume,stability and power consumption of the atomic clock. With the reduction of power consumption and volume of atomic clock,it is imperative to manufacture corresponding micro atom vapor cell.Taking realization of atom vapor cell processing technology as our targets,traditional glass blowing and microelectromechanical system(MEMS)techniques are studied in this dissertation.Based on the research of atom vapor cell,this overview summarizes great progress in the past few years and analyzes the shortage of current preparation technology,giving an importance guidance to the preparation technology of vapor cell in the future.

Abstract:We describe the microfabrication of Rb-85 vapour cells using a glass silicon anodic bonding technique and in situ chemical reaction between rubidium chloride and barium azide to produce Rb Under controlled conditions, the pure metallic Rb drops and buffer gases were obtained in the cells with a few mm(3) internal volumes during the cell sealing process At an ambient temperature of 90 degrees C the optical absorption resonance of Rb-85 D1 transition with proper broadening and the corresponding coherent population trapping (CPT) resonance, with a signal contrast of 1 5% and linewidth of about 1 7 kHz, have been detected The sealing quality and the stability of the cells have also been demonstrated experimentally by using the helium leaking detection and the after-9 month optoelectronics measurement which shows a similar CPT signal as its original status In addition, the physics package of chip-scale atomic clock (CSAC) based on the cell was realized The measured frequency stability of the physics package can reach to 2 1 x 10(-10) at one second when the cell was heated to 100 degrees C which proved that the cell has the quality to be used in portable and battery-operated devices
A Compact Laser System for the Pulsed Optically Pumped Rubidium Cell Atomic Clock

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an implementation of the compact laser system for POP rubidium atomic clock. The compact system consists of the miniaturized optical platform and the laser driving and control electronic module, and the two parts with the same length and width are stacked together to ensure the output laser beam is exactly incident to rubidium vapor cell in physics package of the clock. (1) The miniaturized optical system adopts integration design milling all the pedestals of optical components on the bottom board of the platform with a volume of 30cm×17.5cm×5.8cm. It mainly includes a DBR diode laser as laser source, AOM as optical switching, sub-Doppler spectroscopy optical path, and optical expansion lens. (2) Laser driving and control electronic module mainly includes the highprecision driving current source, temperature control module, and the lock-in module (including PI and the error signal demodulating module). The temperature of the laser diode is set to 20.1°C, with ±0.001°C fluctuation and the injected current is set around 180.2mA, with ±0.001mA control precision. The power of output laser is 40mW, with diameter 15mm. With subDoppler spectroscopy, the laser has been locked to rubidium transition line (795nm) more than 30 days and relocked within 1 second under unattended laboratory conditions, with power fluctuation less than 0.2% and power stability 5.57×10 -4 . The experimental results show that the portable compact laser system has strong robustness and reliance, which has an important significance in the engineering process of POP Rb atomic clock.

Abstract:Based on current situation of the study in this area, our work will introduce a miniature CPT atomic clock system with small physical size, high stability and lower power consumption. The use of our original innovational technology to fabricate small cells can avoid the complexity and difficulty of the anodic bonding technology. By this technology, we could accomplish the objective to minimize the occupied volume of the physical part of the system to 1 cm(3). The single FPGA chip is the main part of the control circuit to accomplish the slower start-up of the laser, two necessary locking loops to make the system work, and the temperature control logic. Our 3.035 GHz RF signal is generated from a TCXO via the technology of DDS. Our prototype is a significant progress to realize CSAC with the use of the single FPGA chip. We demonstrate our CPT clock prototype with the volume less than 100 cm(3). This prototype has frequency instability of 1 x 10(-10) for 1 s and 3 x 10(-11) for 1000 s.

Abstract:Atomic sensors employing cold-atom technology enable unprecedented accuracy and resolution for next generation atomic clocks, magnetometers, gravimeters, and gyroscopes. To date, however, the size and complexity of cold atom systems have prevented their deployment in practical applications outside of large research laboratories. Here we demonstrate a low power, palm-top, and fully integrated cold atom system that functions as an atomic clock with a stability of 2 parts in 10^11 at 1s. This work demonstrates the feasibility of developing compact, robust, and portable devices based on laser cooled atoms.

Abstract:<span class="a-plus-plus abstract-section id-a-sec1 outputmedium-all"> <h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> <p class="a-plus-plus"> We present the results of a study of the relaxation and diffusion processes of rubidium atoms in a rubidium cell with an internal vapor source. The cell is an evacuated glass bulb characterized by the fact the source of atomic vapors in the form of a metal film of Rb has been evenly distributed throughout the inner surface of the bulb, and the paraffin film has also been uniformly distributed over the entire area and over the metal surface. Using laser optical pumping, we performed measurements of the relaxation time and the average number of bounces of optically pumped rubidium atoms in the bulb. We also measured the adsorption time of rubidium atoms by the paraffin coating and the diffusion coefficient of the rubidium atoms in the paraffin used. Abstract:We report the fabrication of a micro vapor cell which has Rb and Ne inside with internal volumes of several millimeters, which is the key component of chip-scale atomic devices like clocks and magnetometers. The cells were filled with Ne at a controlled pressure as the buffer gas by using glass-silicon anodic bonding techniques and dispenser pills of SAES Getters. And a special two-step bonding method was taken to avoid breakdown caused by the buffer gas and to secure the quality of the bonding. We also built an optical measuring system and measured the coherent population trapping (CPT) resonance of 85 Rb D1 line with a linewidth below 2.0 kHz and a contrast about 1.1%. Zeeman spectrum for CPT resonance was also detected in these microcells. These results show that these vapor cells are capable to be used in atomic clocks or magnetometers.

Abstract:We report on the experimental measurement of the DC and microwave magnetic field distributions inside a recently-developed compact magnetron-type microwave cavity, mounted inside the physics package of a high-performance vapor-cell atomic frequency standard. Images of the microwave field distribution with sub-100 $\mu$m lateral spatial resolution are obtained by pulsed optical-microwave Rabi measurements, using the Rb atoms inside the cell as field probes and detecting with a CCD camera. Asymmetries observed in the microwave field images can be attributed to the precise practical realization of the cavity and the Rb vapor cell. Similar spatially-resolved images of the DC magnetic field distribution are obtained by Ramsey-type measurements. The T2 relaxation time in the Rb vapor cell is found to be position dependent, and correlates with the gradient of the DC magnetic field. The presented method is highly useful for experimental in-situ characterization of DC magnetic fields and resonant microwave structures, for atomic clocks or other atom-based sensors and instrumentation.

Abstract:This paper introduce three main technologies in our coherent population trapping clock. The rubidium vapor cell is fabricated by glass-silicon anodic bonding techniques. We use two different buffer gases (Ar and Ne) that produce opposite shift rates to reduce the dependence of the clock frequency stability on the temperature stability of the atoms. We use the ceramic-filled coaxial resonator as the RF resource.

Abstract:The pursuit of better atomic clocks has advanced many research areas, providing better quantum state control, new insights in quantum science, tighter limits on fundamental constant variation, and improved tests of relativity. The record for the best stability and accuracy is currently held by optical lattice clocks. This work takes an important step towards realizing the full potential of a many-particle clock with a state-of-the-art stable laser. Our 87Sr optical lattice clock now achieves fractional stability of 2.2e-16 at 1 s. With this improved stability, we perform a new accuracy evaluation of our clock, reducing many systematic uncertainties that limited our previous measurements, such as those in the lattice ac Stark shift, the atoms' thermal environment, and the atomic response to room-temperature BBR. Our combined measurements have reduced the total uncertainty of the JILA Sr clock to 2.1e-18 in fractional frequency units.

Abstract:This article proposes a new physics package to enhance the frequency stability of the space cold atom clock with the advantages of a microgravity environment. Clock working processes, including atom cooling, atomic state preparation, microwave interrogation, and transition probability detection, are integrated into the cylindrical microwave cavity to achieve a high-performance and compact physics package for the space cold atom clock. We present the detailed design and ground-test results of the cold atom clock physics package in this article, which demonstrates a frequency stability of 1.2 × 10 -12 τ -1/2 with a Ramsey linewidth of 12.5 Hz, and a better performance is predicted with a 1 Hz or a narrower Ramsey linewidth in microgravity environment. The miniaturized cold atom clock based on intracavity cooling has great potential for achieving space high-precision time-frequency reference in the future.
